Great game!
Interesting... to say the least.
very interesting concept - loved the style of the graphics and the mechanic of falling through letters. intrigued to see how it could describe the current state of society (idk did i just miss something)
This is an interesting concept. It goes on for a bit long without variation. I do like the décor and Alice's butt is cute.
Hey! I like your game! I wish there was a loose-condition. Maybe if you miss too many letters, that she will fall faster and faster until the game ends or something.
I enjoyed it nevertheless. The graphics are nice and easy on the eyes
Haha, very chill game! I _did_ make it to the end - had to see if you copied the whole book in there! I will say this - after a while audio starts to sound like a modem from the early nineties!
Nice work!
(and dang, Alice got some junk in her trunk!)
This tells us a lot about the society we (gamers) live in
Whooo, this is so much fun.Thank you!.
Interessting idea ! and very nice art
Cool Game and neat concept! As a big fan of Alice in Wonderland I was really excited to see a game about this world! The falling gameplay and using the letters for points is creative!
The audio for getting the letters at the register they were in and the notes chosen for it felt a little harsh after repeated points. If you want to keep the notes in that higher register I would suggest choosing a scale for the notes. if you want to keep the eeriness in the game maybe choose even just a chromatic downward scale. Another interesting idea could be use of the "Shepherd's tone" It is the concept where as one revolution of the scale reaches the bottom a new one begins way up top to make it seem like a neverending fall. It is the same concept used in the Neverending staircase in Super Mario 64 except in an upward motion. That would be a really great way to amp up the eeriness and add a lot of auditory interest with minimal music writing itself!
Overall great game and cool concept!
This in an interesting concept, and I loved the bookshelves and the details on them. BTW, in case you'd like to fix it, I tried to play the game with Firefox first, but hundreds of web audio errors were logged into the console and the audio sounded a bit like a modem from the 90s. I switched to Chrome and I could play the game without issues there.
@sequoiadolce thanks for playing! I'll check out your game asap, later tonight. As for notes, yes you are right. The thing is, audio was among the last things implemented, two hours before the submission (we only started working mid-Sunday), so I was just glad to have managed to make sound generation work at all.
With other high priority things to wrap up, there was no time to think about how to fit letters into scales or anything like that, for frequency I just multiplied ASCII character codes by 12, found that it sounds psychedelic enough, and was done with it. Uppercase letters sound much better though (the part where it reads the label 'ORANGE MARMALADE' sounds wonderful) but I was at my wits end by then, having just finished the struggle with implementing 1d Perlin noise to make the text wiggle (not too happy with those results either), so it didn't even occur to me to try converting chars to uppercase before getting frequency, which might have improved the sound a bit. Just your usual late start LD.
Thank you all who played so far, if I haven't reviewed your game will do it asap.
@ladybenko Thanks, that was useful! I wasn't aware how bad it sounds in Firefox. It never occurred to me that browser disagreements will affect dynamically generated audio as well. All the bookshelf details are @orb 's credit, he has done more graphics but our time and communication was limited so that is all that got into the game.
@saintchristopher777 Thanks for playing, like ladybenko discovered, sound only works well in Chrome (though it still doesn't sound too great, just less like a dial-up modem)
@wouter52 Thanks for playing. With late start we had (mid-Sunday) the first concept was that there shouldn't be any gameplay elements, just an artsy experience. Only in last few hours did I implement scoring for catching letters (as we were failing to achieve much in "artsy experience" department as well), hence the lack of fail condition.
@abigailcorfman thanks for compliment on Alice's butt, though I know it could have been made better (it is hard to do a good butt in 64x64 character). All décor stuff was drawn by @orb , he'll be glad you liked it.
@starling Thanks for playing. Initial idea was that the game should subtly describe the information overload and strong polarities of opinions we have in this age, but I didn't manage to implement any of that in the short time we had. There is a faint, awkwardly implemented shadow of that idea in the very ending, where Lewis Carroll is said to be both a beloved children's fiction writer and a pedophile, to suggest that anyone can pick their own truth, and maybe make us ponder over how one of those two statements may relate to the other, but all in all I'm not happy with how that turned out (those two statements were meant to be shown side by side, rather than one after another, someone may get the wrong impression that the aim was just to slander the guy).
Agree, the butt is a very smart touch. Don't think anyone might be able to finish the whole book this way, but at least the words combine into some minimalistic jingles. Though, ambient music could deepen the mood. Overall, it's a fun-fall-non-reading. Nice thinking, man!)
It was definitely interesting... sadly the time spent on this was definitely not enough.
Even though there was sound, after a while I just find myself avoiding all of the letters and just slowly reading through all of it. It was definitely unpleasant after a while. Also the slow sideways movement did hamper me from collecting them. In fact, I actually thought I was trying to avoid the shelves.
The awkward spacing of the letters actually made it pretty hard to read in the end, though it was an interesting way to read. At least I can read them well based on how you designed the surroundings though.
It's a good take on things though! Except on the readability end of things...
Strange stuff. Gameplay wise there wasn't much besides collecting the letters to hear the creepy music, so I opted to read the story from the browser's web inspector (sorry for cheating xd). Personally I have only seen the movies (Disney and the Tim Burton one) so I am not sure if the text was taken directly from the book, but it surely seemed like Alice in Wonderland. The end paragraph concerning Lewis Carroll was quite shocking if true, didn't know about the author's dark past before.
As far as the ratings go, the concept fit the theme well and the overall mood was very coherent. Afterwards I definitely understand what you meant about the game describing the current state of society, tho the topic would probably be a better fit for something like a school essay than a video game.
That was a strange experience but interesting concept. I didn't know what I was playing but why not! The sound is also interesting, maybe adding a background sound layer your sound design would be better. It's also quite repetitive, it need something to create surprising situation in your gameplay and encourage players to discover your game and what you want to tell through this text. Keep going!
I have to be honest, when I first tried the game, after reading your description, I thought it was just Alice falling and that was it. But after reading the comments I realised there should be more than that, so pressing the arrow keys really "started" the game for me. That is something to watch out for. That first time player experience.
I appreciate how experimental this was. Good job!
Hey thanks for making the game - i found the controls interesting and the mood was very palpable!
Definitely loved the mood and the background to this one. Honestly showing her bum so prominently was strange - but I get that's partially what your going for!
Wasn't a huge fan, the controls were a bit stiff and the jingle for getting the notes was pretty painful after a short while.
Interesting take on the theme. I was very impressed with the procedural audio and how it worked with the overall mood of the game.
It's an interesting concept with good mood and a bit of humor. It get's a bit boring fast though, so I ended up checking the source to see if this was a full book in length, or what. Perhaps some more visual changes or effects or how the letters come would help, even if it was not the goal of the game. Still, it's a nice and very creative entry for a jam, Well done!
Interesting, deep entry about culture, society and about what is true and what is false and that it'd be always be subjective. Probably not a game for everyone but if you're interested in receiving an unique experience then it's worth of checking out. I enjoyed the theme incorporation, sounds and graphics, as well as the usage of Alice in Wonderland text. Beutiful, unique entry. The mood was magnificent, well done!
Ah, a fan of fever dreams, so am I :) Loved the take on the theme, it's different and creative.
Really interesting choice here, with a neat concept, a cool literary tie-in, and ethereal music. I felt like Alice was pretty sexualized for a little girl, but I see that you were trying to do that as commentary on Carroll. Still, felt kind of icky, but that might have been your point. Very artsy entry :-) Nice work.
Very interesting concept and take on the theme. The sound effects might be a little harsh on the ears without a slider but it wasn't anything that turned me off. I think you guys did a great job.
Great sound.
Well this was an ususual game, I give you that :smile_cat: ...I liked the idea of falling and reading the story, it was innovative at least.
I would have maybe wanted to slow down at some point where I missed some words (both didn't have time to read them and didn't reach them in time).
Funny pixelart and fine, although repetitive, background gfx. Sounds were ok, but maybe some additional background tone or tune would have enhanced the mood. I would also liked to have some items to come upwards or anything to give a bit of variety to the fall.
Anyways, the whole thing was kinda cute
This is by far the most interesting game I have seen on here yet. If there was one thing I could comment on is it does get a bit bland after a minute or so, some variation would make it a whole lot better, but still a good game overall!
Enjoyed the graphics and innovation, pretty good even with only 1.5 days! nice job.
Very interesting experience. I liked the touch of music while hitting the letters, but wish the horizontal movement would allow me to fall fast and still keep up with the letters. I eventually tried to reach the end by shooting straight down, but she just fell deeper and deeper.
I didn't read much of the text  I assume it's an excerpt from Alice in Wonderland?
Visually, bruh.... pixel butt-cheeks? lol??? Good one! The animation on the dress is pretty good too!
Some potential here for a type of "art"-game! Good job on your entry!
Well, this one felt unusually weird in a good way. I like the idea in general even though it doesn't offer that much gameplay in terms of diversity. Cool graphics - well fitting backdrops and the butt! Haha, loved that detail. Perhaps it could be broken into smaller levels each with a part of story and with some obstacles to make things more interesting. Considering you only had 1.5 days to invest into this, great job! Keep up good work
Thank you all for taking time to try out our "game", much appreciated.
@dob To our defense, the design document did state that Alice is to be a realistically drawn adult girl, however it turned out neither of us is able to realistically draw an adult girl well enough, let alone animate it, so I turned to pixel art to save the day. And well, the problem with 64x64 pixel characters is you can't really tell the character age (I guess high heels weren't much of a cue), so that turned out to be awkward. It doesn't help either that we ended up with a scaling problem between Alice and shelf items, making her look smaller.
@kr4ft3r I totally understand where you were coming from. Despite the design document, which of course I didn't have access to, she's only seven or so in the books, which is what I was assuming for the art. I'm sorry if my comments caused distress.
Hmm, for some reason I can't play it in chrome (or edge lol). I just get a red to black gradient screen on a purple to black gradient background. Perhaps a downloadable version might help?
Certainly an.... interesting entry. Personally I don't mind the chiming of the letters too much, some people might complain about them but as long as you don't keep the volume too high they won't strain your speakers and it'll sound pretty nice.
Watching the constant stream of score reports in the browser log is pretty fun.
@maple hey, thanks for wanting to try the game out, I think you probably just need to click on the game window to focus and then try pressing either right on left key to start the game.
Nice submission, interesting concept!
@kr4ft3r Oh, you're right. In that case maybe "click to gain focus" or something could help, for future reference. I just thought it wasn't loading.
I just played it. I really dig the atmosphere. The vertical words were pretty awesome too, although they were a bit hard for me to keep my focus for the whole thing (sustained effort for too long). Towards the end I let it fall without paying too much attention, to see what would come at the end. I was a little sad that she just kept falling with no change after the text ended - I wanted more!
Honestly, you set up such a mysterious mood with the girl falling and the graphics and text that the butt just felt out of place. Don't get me wrong, I like a nice butt, but in this case I think it took away from the alluring atmosphere you created.
Probably among the highest points I've awarded for mood this time around.
Keep it up.
Could have been neat if the idea was expanded upon a bit.
Quite funny that we both used the same Alice theme on our game. Nice game, cool artworks
