nice work ! those monkeys need to be put down

bingtheping 2022-04-04 15:07

LOVED THIS GAME! The graphics, the ambience, the story, the gameplay, EVERYTHING, this game is perfect, such a simple gameplay mechanic yet the game is so engaging!

andy-beers 2022-04-04 15:11

Theme is great. I wish I would've understood a bit more about how fast my powers would go away before they needed to cooldown, definitely more of an 'experience' than a game which I think is pretty cool, love to see the different projects people can create. I'm personally not a fan of the humor but I imagine it'll be a hit for many others. Well done to get what looks to be a pretty polished game given the time constraints!

lomstfer 2022-04-04 15:14

Hahahah! Such a beautiful game. The monkeys really started to behave like monkeys in the end...

daniel-foutz 2022-04-04 15:17

This looks great! I find it's difficult to tell how my WASD input actually affects the status bars. To me it seemed like they sort of just did their own thing which kind of made me feel like I was watching a cute animation instead of playing a game. Maybe attaching a number to the status symbols or swapping the sprites for bars would make it easier to track. I think this is a great execution on the theme and your art is really cute. Nice job!

rolly 2022-04-04 15:59

That's awesome. As you said, not really challenging as a game, but the story/visual/audio experience that you offer is great! I'm always impressed by the level of polish of your games, and quality of your arts. I could have played it 30 more minutes without feeling bored; the balance between relaxing, entertainment and humor is perfect.

Great entry!

**"YOU DAMN MONKEYS! STOP BEHAVING LIKE... A BUNCH OF DAMN MONKEYS!"**

I love that. 😄

There really isn't anything to criticize in this entire game, from the backing track to the amazing graphics to the hilarious dialogue making fun of how dumb ~~humans~~ monkeys are, this is kind of a masterpiece! Well done @kuro , enjoy some 5-star rankings.

100th-coin 2022-04-05 03:57

Oh man, I love the ending where Gaia intervenes. The story is as accurate as it is pessimistic. Top points for mood. The artwork is really nice! I love how Gaia visibly gets upset. Plus, the gameplay is really well balanced. I never lost, but it was always just on the brink of happening. Nice work!

ollie-d 2022-04-05 07:42

Interesting concept. Charming graphics. I found that I could do nothing and the game seemed to be just doing fine haha

purpledartfrog 2022-04-05 08:05

@kuro I really liked the serene athmosphere of this. I will return an unsolicited advice for you  I felt kind of like the player feedback when using WASD was missing a little bit - maybe a bit more sound to it - or an effect on the flames. Very nice entry :thumbsup_tone1:

kuro 2022-04-05 12:50

@musaspacecadet @bingtheping @lomstfer @ollie-d thank you .)

@andy-beers It seems to be a problem, yes. What @daniel-foutz suggested might have been a solution, but it didn't occur to me at the time.

@daniel-foutz the numbers on the UI would solve a lot. I know what you mean. I'll keep that in mind for the next time. Also, the art thanks you for the compliment .)

@rolly thanks! I'll try to keep it up (and improve)

@peace-of-cake-games thank you very much m8 .)

@100th-coin the mood change was the first thing I implemented. I'm glad I managed to execute the idea I originally had and didn't get sidetracked this time.

@purpledartfrog My favorite kind of advice   The windows version has a bloom glow on the heal so it's more visible. Web build doesn't do blooms for some reason. But yeah, it still could've used some more care. Thanks for the feedback, it's spot on.

purpledartfrog 2022-04-05 12:54

@kuro You're absolutely welcome  It's actually one of the things about the feecback and ratings... I kind of miss.... Right down here below the comment section there should be a mandatory field with the "label" - "My single best advice for improving the entry". (Hope it makes sense..)

kuro 2022-04-05 13:02

@purpledartfrog yes it does, and it's actually a great idea.

boc-dev 2022-04-05 14:08

the music was very ambient, and the art style was consistent. good work!

frogravity 2022-04-05 18:39

Great game! I really loved all the different animations, especially the intro animation and the flame/heal effects. Overall, it was an incredibly polished entry, from start to finish. I really don't have anything to add besides the slight lack of player feedback others have mentioned - it's a very complete experience.

As a side note, I downloaded the source code (mostly to understand how does the animation wizardy work, and to confirm my suspicion that Gaia grows bigger as the game progresses), and it seemed to be stuck in a loop in the middle of the game whn running it? Anyway, just wanted to say that the "Make. The" command looks incredible cool! How did you make it, if I may ask?

pkenney 2022-04-06 02:06

Mother's entrance, with the tweened bubbles forming the cloud for her to sit on was awesome. The music serves as a great example of how it doesn't take very much at all to fill the void and provide some nice background, that's a lesson I need to learn!

I got a bit confused at the start, because I though I had to WASD the planet itself. I was watching to see if I controlled a certain monkey or had to push the direction on the planet... then I realized to watch mother instead and it was gravy from there. I probably could have used some audio reinforcement of the state changes (fire start / fire out, powerup gone / restored) but that's totally minor.

Nice job, especially since you controlled scope to avoid burning yourself out (further)! One can certainly go too far all-in on compos.

honey-pony 2022-04-06 17:14

The best moment, for me, in this game was when I was very close to losing, and the dialog advanced at that point and so refilled my health all the way. Although I imagine this is a very intentional part of the game, *in the moment* it just feels like dumb luck, which is great. In particular, this is saying that, if nature happens to get us through climate change safely, it may well be dumb luck. I don't know, it's just kind of a... fun..? take.

One note on audio, is that it seems pretty quiet for me. Perhaps though I just have my computer audio set too low in the first place.

glayson 2022-04-06 17:54

The planet and monkey art are great but the Gaya art didn't combine well with the others... I really missed some good feedback (a sound pehaps) when i did something. One time, i did not press the space bar and only noticed a couple of minutes later...

It's a nice ideia and i wish you keep working on it! it's very inspirational!

simon-rahnasto 2022-04-06 19:49

I like how you after a little bit realize that we are the monkeys. It's a really interesting take on the theme, and you nailed the execution.

As usual you manage to create a game which looks and feel great, with your own unique style. Even if I did not know that you had made this game, I'd be able to tell immediately. Great length, the game never got stale and I enjoyed reading the dialogue. The difficulty was tuned well, I didn't feel it was too easy, but at the same time it would have been annoying to die and restart. The point of the game is the story, so I was happy to be able to finish it. Finally the audio was nice and helped create a great atmosphere.

I truly hope that we are not just delaying the inevitable.

danield 2022-04-06 22:05

This was a lot of fun, I lost it when the monkeys shot off into space. I played in the web version and it all ran without any bugs that I could see. I liked the music too. Good job!

trexxak 2022-04-07 13:19

__FUCKING MONKEYS__ Yeah, you did make me laugh, quite a lot actually :D Love the back and forth of Gaia and the narrator a lot, and the ending is just excellent! While not overly complex or intricate, this game follows the tradition of your games being very distinct and memorable. Love it, thank you!

langotriel 2022-04-07 14:50

Absolutely freakin hilarious! I loved it. Sure, the gameplay is simple but I'm a sucker for narrative and I laughed out loud multiple times. It's always a good sign when a game makes you think, "I would have loved to work on this". Great game; and not just for a compo entry. Fantastic!

mateusboga 2022-04-07 17:38

Really cute game, I like the graphics and the concept. I enjoyed paying it on stream! Here's the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1449081812

kuro 2022-04-09 00:26

@frogman look for the SetFloat("Blend", ...something...) method call, probably in Gaia.cs, but not sure, don't remember, and am also kind of drunk.

Disable that (Gaia.cs) script in editor, and go to Gaia Animator window. It's the one where you set up animation transitions. There should be a blend tree in a base layer with values between 0 and 1. That's what changes the expression of Gaia in play mode. I'll try to provide some screenshots later since I fear this is not nearly explanatory enough and am on a phone and don't rember exactly what's where.

geckoo1337 2022-04-11 16:00

Whoa. Really cute game. What a really good experience. The main gameplay is simple, ruining my keyboard, but the background story is great. The way the monkey's humanity acts is progressively pathetic, but Gaïa is good. Your project fits perfectly to the theme. The ethereal track is quiet and creates a cool ambient. I liked the lesson. Thank you for your good entry. I wish you the best ++

theblitz 2022-04-14 13:15

Haha loved how you practically summed up human history :)

stasm 2022-04-21 13:49

I played it to the end and enjoyed it. The graphics are cute, and the gameplay and the writing are engaging. I had a few minutes of fun with it :) Have you considered inflicting damage from many more sides than just NSWE, forcing the player to use all 10 fingers to heal Gaia? I imagine it could be pretty fun to have to press twisted "chords" on the keyboard.
