LD46 — Keep it alive

Keep It Undead by pcmaster 2020-04-28T05:45:06Z

lol cute, I liked the art style I like the twist on keeping it alive being about the virus It took me a long time to figure out level 1, I know it said spread the virus outside but i didnt realize there was a trigger box near the exit. Also, I kinda got distracted trying to infect everyone because that was fun xDDD

Great job

Battery Savior by Cliff Lee CL 2020-04-26T09:14:53Z

Full points. This is incredibly amazing. I could go on forever about how amazing this is.

I was attracted just by the photo, it looked fun just from the photo because it was a handphone and I could already tell I had to charge my phone somehow LOL. And when I found out it wasn't a puzzle game (as it looked like from the level design) but a skill based game, even better.

Controls: Not only that, but i love the way the controls work with the acceleration based on mouse distance. It's so simple to implement but it provides such deep gameplay and mastery curves omg. I've started trying to "brake" by switching my mouse positions from front to back.

Also, it's genius adding the green and brown blocks.

Love all the attention to polish, detail, affordance and feedback design. The bounce was a nice touch, that i'm guessing was also simple to implement if it took advanatage of Unity's physics engine and material. Ingenius.

Everything in this game came together and synergized very well, from visual design, gameplay design, sound, mood.

What acceleration or formulas were used for the movement of the plug? Omg i'm so curious.

One difficulty i face is the controls for restarting. When i click "play again" because my mouse is hovering over the button, the plug immediately starts going retarded for the center. So i feel like I get punished unfairly, since i sometimes lose time. And i have to wait till the entire level times out before I can try again. Some levels are so tight for me, even miliseconds count (which shows the game is amazingballs). I have to time my reaction really well after clicking the button. It's a minor detail, this game is so polished that I can start giving feedback on the tiniest details.

Humours, relatable and get use of existing schematics in a person's brain.

Dude i can go on forever about how amazing this is so I'm just going to stop. xD

Battery Savior by Cliff Lee CL 2020-05-09T14:45:09Z

@cliff-lee-cl omigawd, its so beautiful and simple. The way you executed the use of this simple add force is so good. I tend to overcomplicate the physics in my games with crazy functions, and so far most of the games which feel good use really simple equations like yours :')

Thanks so much for sharing! <3 *adds to self-study notes* xD

Raising the bar by SpaceMonkey 2020-04-26T08:51:08Z

Damn, loved the title screen and the sound effect that went with it. Generally great idea and themematic execution :D The weeks went by too fast for me xD It was week 4 and I still hadn't figured out some of the stuff but i was overloaded with ingredients. the tool tips helped

Lololol Copy-and-pasting @virimine 's hashtags, Muahuahua! Thank you too guys, I read everything xD The feedback is really valuable, especially since playtests are harded to conduct during #stayhome T_T The whole team discusses and loves all the attention and feedback :DDD

I never imagined so many people would replay it multiple times, and I'm impressed with how many of you reached the final ending.... We were trying make it really hard xD

@tom-stephenson - thanks again for reading, and your kind words xD As i was telling my group, even my hiring managers don't usually. It's been a life long dream of mine to be able to pull off economy design :') thanks again for noticing!

Perish alive by Lyrcaxis 2020-04-29T09:22:08Z

@jofish Woah, that you've kept playing multiple times is a huge compliment! Haha yes, extra humans would be cool! The team is in discussion on a baby-making room :x Ohhhhh, thank you for pointing out that reinforcing loop. a mid-game downward spiral where one mistake would plummet you into nothingness is indeed bad xD Thanks for all the detail, suggestions and most importantly - explaining so clearly your reasons why :) It really helps

Perish alive by Lyrcaxis 2020-04-30T04:49:08Z

@max-louis You caught me there :X @khud0 noticed it too hahah I did the humans last and ran out of time for style-experimentation, so I drew it in my normal style. I skipped the whole research phase for them xDDD

Ideally I'd have liked to blend bits of the dark whale elements into them, while still matching Virimiine's style for the reef. The idea was to show cute "innocent" humans building a machine of doom, and the contrast would create a subconcious discomfort in the mind xD

Thanks for playing it on stream, just watched the whole thing. That's the most priceless form of playtesting feedback, voicing thoughts as you play ^^

@kelsyrup oh no, sorry about that D: thanks for letting us know about the bug too. Ooh thats interesting, how/when did the current waves feel inbalanced or unfair currently?

Perish alive by Lyrcaxis 2020-05-09T14:52:59Z

@room606 You entered flow? My life as a designer is complete

Thank you for noticing and all the great suggestions! Ahahahah congrats detective, you found a placeholder asset ;D The threadmill is totally out of place. LOL :beers:

Yup, i've wrote some DevLogs for the economy design & the Cogwhale art: - [A Designer's Tricks: Why those Numbers?](https://lyrcaxis.itch.io/perish-alive/devlog/140464/a-designers-tricks-why-those-numbers) - [An Artist's Hack: Two ideas, one style?](https://lyrcaxis.itch.io/perish-alive/devlog/139529/an-artists-hack-two-ideas-one-style)

I believe Lyr wrote one on programming too!

@mika-la-grand - Hello~ Thanks for the great suggestions! I'm curious about the reason why you'd like heal and shoot to be automated (if you still remember, my bad. I shouldve followed up earlier xD) I think it's an interesting idea.

@cliff-lee-cl - THANK YOU. :') /system designer

@ithildin - lololol, you found the initial inspiration. I refrained from playing FTL on purpose to prevent it from becoming a perfect copy xD

@benjamin-san-souci - Child Labour >:') #sweatshop Lol I like dark and twisted stuff xD

@ausstein - Thanks!!! With @virimine there to handle half the art assets, we had time to draw more polished art hee hee

@mlkvr @puszkee - Thank you both kindly :D

@nyunesu - THANK YOU. Feedback like this is the best for improving  I'm particularly interested in the part about the chill vs. rush disconnect in visual and gameplay. Could you be more specific, or give an example about what part of the aesthetic felt disconnected? The color palette, the animation, the drawing style of a specific object? etc. xD

@ondrasej - I'm flattered you're willing to replay it multiple times >///< if you're up for it, could you do a recording of your playthrough :'D /wants to study it

@mika-la-grand ahhh got it, appreciate the clarification!

Blazerunner by Raivk 2020-04-28T06:33:50Z

What. The. Actual. Flying. Fish.

Are you guys professionals with a bunch of triple AAA experience under your belts or successful indie titles?

Everything about this game is incredible, being done in 3 days is even more insane. Even if it weren't 3 days but 2 weeks, it'll still be insane.

I loved the level design and the secrets. Adding a leaderboard linked to a server too omg, and seeing the other's timings made us realize there must be something hidden. Really smart design to showcase the leaderboard to get players to find these easter eggs.

The controls are amazing too, at first we only thought of using the control of throwing the flame to get to the olympic ending sooner. But man, after we found the easter eggs. i'm sure there's some deeper strategy to do with throwing that we havent figured out yet too, maybe some combination of the different controls to open access to more areas or different ways to overcome wind and rain. wouldn't be surprised if it existed.

And the level design was very mindful of the camera, I didn't get any of the motion-sickness i usually get from 3D games with a rotational camera made in such a short time. Usually the camera slams into the wall, or gets blocked by level design pieces, or field of view wasn't considered in level design layout and entrances... but man.

The jump doesn't feel floaty at all either, it feels great and responsive and heavy. Really suitable for such a high-paced speedrun focused game.

I. Love. The. Lerping. UI. And how the sound is synced with everything. What.

The fx is beautiful too, simple but cool.

Affordance and feedback design is incredibly polished. When you die, you know exactly why and you're aware that you died because the pacing and timing of the transitions let you realize your torch is out, and notice details in the level which might have killed it. The flavour text at the end is cute and funny to read too.

The only thing I had to read instructions for were the controls, but even then that was mapped from popular shooter game controls so there wasn't much confusion there.

Freaking. Awesome.

Flippy Fish by Doot 2020-05-09T15:16:47Z

I laughed so much. I love this! So simple and fun! :DDDD it's hilarous, got me super excited.

I AM A GENIUS :D Felt great finishing this amazing!

Hot Day by sypdev 2020-04-28T05:56:29Z

i love the ice cube's face, and how it changes and lerps away when you jump and the mechanic of being in and out of the shade is great,, adds an interesting depth to level design

camera could be improved, but its great for a 48h game

cant believe you even had a youtube video, nice job

Survivalgo by despdair2 2020-04-26T08:57:44Z

Innovative!!! It was a little abstract with the diagonal arrows, cause my brain was stil thinking in left right down up relative to the person.

Super easy to pick up and understand, very clear, not confusing at all. Great feedback. I didn't even read the instructions to figure out how to play

If it's aimed at children, the jump in difficulty from level 1 to 2 might be too abrupt. Maybe some levels in between for a more gradual increase?

I love how you used "scary" to describe the red tiles, it shows you're thinking of your audience.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Deepahead by KOHCEPBA 2021-05-07T07:13:07Z

Interesting implementation of human psychology. Love the 3D puzzle mechanic. The game was intuitive and i did not need to read instructions or have a tutorial to figure out how to play the game. However, i was unsure if i collected all the item but a suggestion would be to list the total amount of items needed for the level e.g a quest counter "3/3 found"

depthscraper by lexi 2021-04-27T09:08:24Z

Crazy amazing, i would download this if it were an app. Not kidding. I had no idea what i was doing for a whhile but once i got it... muahua Also, the lerps rock.

The case of the door in the woods by jonah 2021-04-27T08:24:04Z

Totally clicked in because i liked the art style, did not dissapoint :) I opened the door!

I really love what you did here I'm not normally one for music or text-heavy games but this was rather fun! I really liked how the 3-frame animations matched up with the music beats. Everything matched very well, including the choice of simple walking animation and transitions! Nicely done :D

Abysmal by Pulni 2021-04-27T09:14:35Z

This is so amazingly beautiful! Loving the color palettes and abstractness! Also loving how procedural and systemic this base is! Can really see the potential here. Very clean UI, very intuitive resource display.

I'm tempted to leave it on overnight to let the number roll higher haha!

I may have spammed too many ants, hahah it's a little laggy!

Archeomoleist by aniur 2021-05-07T05:05:58Z

comepleted it :) Very innovative, combining tetriz puzzle mechanic with the typical dig-for-treasure game for a fresh spin! Great job! In my playthrough it was really easy, I always had >8 moves. I had worms everywhere, so i just went down.
