This was fun. I'm not usually a fan of platform games, but the fire mechanic made this enjoyable. The graphics is a good fit but the game really suffers from the lack of sound/music. The gameplay is top notch. Good job.
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD48 → Nuclear blaze

Hey Sebastien, is it just me missing the tilemap? deepnight_net___Nuclear_Blaze.png
It looks like this issue with the missing textures is only happening on Safari. On Chrome it works fine. Back to the game, the gameplay is super nice, the water flow and the fire is so looking good :) Too bad there is no music (is it really missing or is it my browser hiccuping?). Anyway as usual it's super polished for such a short time-frame.
wow. impressive amount of polish, love the fire mechanic and shadow system. amazing work!
No problem with missing texture on Edge. As always with your entry a good game. Great looking fire/water. PS4 gamepad didn't work for me (could only jump/shoot water).
Really nice gameplay and flow as usual. The fire spreading mechanic feels nice and natural and adda a lot of pressure toward the end.
The game feel is just amazing. I feel like I can always tell when it's a deepnight game just based on the character movement alone. The artwork and level is extremely polished and looks great. The fire and water mechanics is very nice and impressive as well. As other people have said, too bad for no audio. That would have really "put me" inside of a raging inferno. Overall awesome job! I enjoyed it.
The effects and particle are extremely cool. I love the dithering shadows but I think that it should be light further more, it hard to see ahead. Totally love the game. Great job. I think no audio would be great, remind me of some good old games.
your game always have that level of polish. Really enjoy the the water "physics". Thanks for the game ! (and the source code)
Central, I processed to play the game. It's daaamn hot, Central.
As always, stunnings visuals, this fire really scares me! The backdraft really are impressive! And it make extinguishing this even more satisfying, if only there were a "psssht" sound =D
As for the ending, it's so frustrating, I wanted to know more, learn why were those nuclear symbols here...
Gameplay-wise, I thinks some balancing could be done to the level length, and to the fire visibility. It's a bit harsh dying to the smallest almost-invisible leftover ember, and having to start again from the beginning the levels (that gets loooong by the end). Maybe the opened doors could stay open and fire re-spread only a bit?
Central? Why aren't you responding?
the usual deepnight qualtiy: polished, feels great to play, visually pleasing and creative. Amazing game, the fire + water implementation is insane.
I always look forward to seeing what you come up with! Loved the fire effect. Putting out the flames with the fire hose was extremely satisfying.
I would definitely love to see a post-jam version! A suggestion: having some movement while the hose is going, even just a slow walk, would have been a good addition. Spraying the hose around felt so nice, but having to stop walking to do so didn't feel so great.
For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to get past the room with the blue keycard. I tried several times, but kept getting a :fire: at the door.
Great work!
The graphics are truly awesome! The appearances of fire, water and smoke are just right. With the lack of checkpoints, some later levels are a bit tedious, but overall the game is just amazing, even in its current silent state. Great work as expected from the legendary deepnight!
The graphics in this are absolutely outstanding. The gameplay is a lot of fun too, I liked the simplified platforming controls and firing the hose was a lot of fun. It'd be great to see it fleshed out into a full game. It desperately needs some sound, though, the animation, particularly the explosions have so much weight to them, it's crying out for some thuds, whooshes and the like. Awesome game. :)
This was really polished! I feel like not having any sound definitely hurt the experience though. I also wish there were more varied encounters, but for a 48 hour jam this is fantastic work.
Amazing game, I really like how there are 3 different styles of shooting to choose from. It makes it simple to play, yet lots of depth. Really fun to explore
Amazing visuals, I was excited to play just by screenshots. Would really be interested to see how you can develop this further. It would be fun to see how many uses the water mechanic can provide.
The graphical polish here is amazing! I stopped at the room right of the first (assuming there are more) keycard door, as I couldn't figure out how to put out the fire on the platform up above without climbing onto it and getting burned.
I couldn't think of an easier 5 on this jam. Very well polished, great fire and water simulation, pixel art on point. Altogether great.
Very nice pixel graphics and controls. Would have loved to play it with some sound effects...but overall a great entry.
Well polished with great artwork. I've never played a firefighter Metroidvania. I could definitely see this being a full game!
This is delightful! I just wish it had sound :P That might be something to add after the Jam is over ;)
Wow, great job! Can't believe you did all this in the short time that you did! Everything felt smooth, the graphics were great, and it was just overall a very satisfying game to play.
This was amazing and I can only imagine how much better it would have been with sound! You have such an amazing talent for making games. I am in awe every time I play one of your Ludum Dare entries!
The game rules, fun gameplay, excellent pixel art.
The particle effects really sell the fire and water elements.
Would be very cool to see this game in a full version!
Youve somehow turned what would normally be boring as heck into an enjoyable and visually stunning game. I'd love to see a full version of this, with sound and everything. Props!
This IS AMAZING AS HELLFIRE
The graphics are amazingly good. The mood was nailed, I felt apprehension before opening a door I knew would burst flame everywhere.
The water and fire effects were great and the I liked the innovative mechanic. Also, seeing how the fire spreads back was surprising. Congrats!
This is why you never release your fire mixtape in a nuclear power plant ! The game is really nice the gameplay is on point, i'm really digging the art the fire and water effects are really cool, like the character say at the start of the game : "Noice !"
Wow. Excellent!! Art style beautiful. Fire and water effects beautiful too. The lack of sound/music didn't detract.
I would say it's a little repetitive after a while - I stopped feeling like I was finding new challenges.
Don't forget to remove the swearing from the kid friendly version!
Very good game! I love the art and the mood!
I cannot even describe how much I enjoyed the game. Everything - from the art style to how great the tutorial looks like. Atmosphere, mechanics, everything is just out of the world. Amazing job!
This game is so perfectly made! Art, control, theme are just perfectly combined! And I love the gameplay design too!
Wish to see this game fully-released on steam or other e-shops.
I just couldn't describe how shocked I am.
Feels very polished and the graphics are gorgeous, can't believe this was made in 48 hours. I found putting out the fires really satisfying espiecially when they were just in a straight line. I would like to see an ending in the future!
cool game, i got stuck at quite an early part but still enjoyed it alot! love the art.
Realy fun game! My only complaints is that it's a bit too long and the lack of audio. With the latter, the game could've been a 5 star for me.
Ahhhh I saw this one on twitter too, this is a great one. Really had fun spraying all over the place, and the graphics for the water/fire were really impressive. I'm particularly impressed with the system you rigged up for the fire spread too, and all this in compo!? Wow!
The game feel is incredible, there is a lot to learn here! It is a very impressive as the previous ones. Great job again!
Funny little game !! can u rate mee too on my game bro ?
Very well done game ! It's always a pleasure to play your game, I love water mechanics ! Congrats !
That was surprisingly fun. The particle system for the water fire and smoke was particularly impressive to behold. Makes me wish I'd made something similar in my game it's so good.
That is seriously impressive work for such a short time! I guess audio would have been nice but it's also too much to ask! Good job!
The fire and water graphics are incredibly impressive, the art design in general is fantastic. Loved the way the areas reveal themselves and snake through the background as you progress. The backdraft mechanic was cool but the controls felt a little sluggish overall, especially jumping.
This is very impressive, very professional. Loved the weight your character has. The graphics are stellar especially fire and water. Love this, the animation is great but would love to have a way to sprint with the character. This is great! can't wait for the full version! So tight.
It's incredible! Very addictive gameplay and catchy visual style. I like it!
The graphics are top notch as usual. I wish there were sound effects to go with the great graphics and story, but that I'm sure would have been added if time had allowed. One of the things that I had a lot of trouble with was the dual function of the move/jump controls functioning as the water direction when you were spraying stuff. Many times I pressed up to spray above me only to forget to hit the spacebar first. Regardless, it is an excellent entry I would play more of.
Nice game! The particle effects are just superb. Controls are also responsive expert for jumping wich feels somewhat weird. But not being able to spray water while on a ladder was annoying sometimes.
The particules and the animations are just godlike, the gameplay is fun, the pixel art is super clean, realy great job dude. I'm hopping than the sounds will come one day.
Graphicly stunning, dying to a small amount of fire is a little harsh at times (especially with the long animation), also would be nice to have a warning about bad language or a way to change it,
Ok, this is bloody amazing. I would love to see a full game of this, with some coop, water physics/corrosion. 5 stars across the board.
Best game I've seen so far, extremely polished. Would love to play this with audio. The particle effects and the fog of war are amazing!
this is very polished and fun to play, good work
Amazing, it looks really polished for 48 hours, and the story is really compelling! I like the (spoiler warning), first time you see a door explode it really takes you by suprise, the game has a very nice overall atmosphere. Incredible work my friend, good job!
It's just a 5/5 just for the fire visual haha but apart from that is a really really long and fun game for a 48h game!
This is insanely good. Extremely polished and beautiful. The fire mechanic(s) are very pleasant. The game feel is amazing. The way you put out fire and the steam comes after it is just satisfying. I loved every second of it.
Good job, this is a great game.
Very cool!
this is incredible!
OK, this is awesome. I hope some day I'll be able to deliver a game that good on a jam
Wow, the mood is great, even without the music/sfx! The lighting, the particle effects and your spritework do miracles here!
Great game, the particle effects are awesome and it's nice to see a little story in a 48 hour game.
Holy shit, this looks amazing!
The central mechanic is really polished and feels satisfying. the art is really well done as well.
What a great job. I struggled a lot to clean some rooms, but it was pretty cool. The physics of water works really well. I really like the atmosphere that emerges from your game. Long enough life for 48 hours of work.
Thank you for a great time, and congratulations
Nice game, I liked the artstyle and gameplay.
Just brilliant, I love how it felt more like the interpretation of the theme was "deeper and deeper into trouble" rather than just physically "deeper"
I didn't know it was allowed to make this good of a game in jams. Damnnn, what a amazing job. Level design is super solid, core mech is creative and the visuals 5/5. Just amazing.
Beautiful game, super impressed with how well you got the water and fire to look. I didn't think a firefighting game could be this good, I loved the feeling of spraying down those big fires, it felt super satisfying.
The fire and water effects are worth every minute you spent on them!! I'm blown away. I think the only feedback I can give (besides sound) is the communication here could've been a little clearer - it took me longer than I'm willing to admit to figure out what to do. :) Excellent entry!!
Untitled.png
Amazing game and fantastic animations. I would love to know how you did the water. And what engine are you using?
Really cool graphics.
Wow. Such a great visual aesthetic here! I can only imagine how much audio would have added to this experience (as it was already quite fun in the silence). The fire and water effects are very cool. It was hard to understand how the fire spread (it seemed to show up far away from where existing fire was). I'd love to see this project go further. Amazing entry.
Really Cool gameplay, and awesome vfx)
Central, a masterpiece here
Really well done. This one is definitely not a common type. Played it till the end and enjoyed immensely.
Excellent production for a 48h jam. Looks incredible, with a strong amount of visual polish and that good *gamefeel* that's so elusive. Shame to not have any music, but I think you've done *enough*, tbh.
Loved it! I like your interpretation of the theme! visually it is awesome!
I liked the water and fire. Also the game has moderate amount of difficulty.
Fantastic game! The only thing really missing is sounds. Would pay for full version.
Nice Game! The graphics are very beautiful, and menage to convey the mood even without sound. I would definitely play a post-compo version
Psst, you should go rate some games when you get the time! You have 160 ratings already and haven't rated anyone else. Bit counter to the spirit of the jam!
@kroltan You're absolutely right :) I only didn't have time to play anything yet, but it's on my plans ;)
@larsdu Haxe language, with HeapsIO engine, and my "GameBase" code base (available on my website: https://deepnight.net)
So good. It just feels so satisfying. Too bad for the missing endind :( but so many levels!!!
wow this is amazing! I love the fire spreading mechanics, it really felt like I was fighting a raging blaze. with a little more time this could be an incredible game
Incredible! It's so satisfying to extinguish the flames. Loved the feeling of getting overwhelmed when the flames spread faster than you can extinguish them, and then the feeling of relief when you slowly claw back ground and manage to get things under control. Loved the backdraft slow-motion effect as well. The only drawback is the lack of audio. But overall, amazing work. Really well done!
Awesome as usual
I'm in love with those animations and effects, it was so worth polishing those water and fire effects! Also really love the theme of going deeper into the trouble zone.
I felt like the fire was spreading rather quickly which made is almost impossible to go back in case you missed something but on the other hand that's very realistic :D it wasn't really an issue tho imo, but more like something that came to mind :)
Overall an absolutely stunning submission, congrats!!
I never knew I wanted a fire fighter sim until now :D
Really nice look and cool fire and water effects. Audio would have elevated this even further above and beyond. Good job!
Very well polished, the lack of sound isn't an issue, I loved it!
I completed it, and my only (small) issue is that the game can be unforgiving, a small mistake late in a large level will reset it which I have to redo from the start.
Super polished experience! Loved the art and the effects were beautiful. Checkpoints would be nice because of the one-hit death, but overall great work!
Awesome graphics and smooth gameplay. The theme holds in the scenario, which is fine, but is quite discrete. I agree with the previous comment, sometimes frustrating to restart a big level while you were close to the end, but it's a small issue compared to the general quality of the game. Thanks!
Alot of great polish on this. Looks good and plays well. Neat little game!
Really love the particle effects for water and fire. Would just need music!
Even without music, this game is absolutely amazing. It looks awesome and it plays awesome. Great job!
Very cool entry, but checkpoint are a bit too rare sometimes. One time i lost so much progress that I didn't want to go back and do it all again...
Fire and water work and look awesome, very intiutive introduction into all mechanics
Very satisfying gameplay! Hope to see a full game in the future!
This compo is stellar. The mechanic is cool, the art style is amazing, even the lil buildup with Central is worthwile, incredibly good!
loved it! amazing art, gameplay, the introduction part. it would be so awesome with audio but I certainly can't blame you, you did an amazing job with such a short time
Really interesting mechanics. I love the look of the game, and the way the world is uncovered as the player moves deeper into the level, and the little speech bubbles making me want to go deeper. Would have been awesome to be able to have checkpoints without restarting the whole level though (or a way to rollback death)! Also, great integration of the credits in the level. Overall incredibly well done for a compo!
Great game and super stylish. The pixel art and animations look fantastic. The fire and water look particularly good. I can imagine it with some awesome chiptunes. Really enjoyed it.
Really awesome graphics and execution and great game overall but there aren't enough checkpoints. This makes some levels very frustrating when you have to restart 3 times in row.
It's an interesting idea for platformer. I like it
Cool art work, i really like it, but no sounds, no music. Good work!
Amazing Art and Concept! Great job! Suggestions: Would be nice to have audio but obviously this is a jam, also movement feels a bit sluggish.
Very cool, reminds me visually of Noita
Great ambience and an impressive amount of content for a compo game. The levels were well designed and fun to play. I did trip up on the control scheme a couple of time though, as I tried to aim the water up but accidentally jumped into the fire instead.
Excellent game feel! It's super satisfying to spray water around :D
Stellar work! - Would've loooooved audio, but I understand the time constraints :( - Sometimes walking or shooting felt a bit clunky controls-wise. It seems like you have a rather long downtime for starting to shoot and starting to move after shooting. I suppose this is part of the game challenge and mechanics decisions, but I would've preferred a tighter response.
Excellent work dude! See it through and make an arcade game :D
Really fun and emerssive. I liked the text comunication. Water fire mechanic was cool. wish there was music. Solid work.
This game is so great and looks amazing! I would love the know how you did the fire and water because it looks phenomenal and adds so much to the game. Favourite game of Ludum Dare!
Put on some audio and you can release this as a full game. I liked it a lot. Good job!
Great submission, amazing art! The player control is pretty fun. Also it feels really polished, congrats! I would just check for the checkpoints (it's really frustrating to do big chunks if you died a few times), or maybe adding some kind of health system.
This is a phenomenal game! Would love to be able to play this on the Switch or Xbox.
O.o This game is so good! I love everything about it! The art style, the animations, gameplay, the map... Everything! Even just how the character uses the hose just by pressing different key's is cool! I love it!
One of the most polished games I’ve ever played in all of the ludum dares! The particles with trails and the smoke effects are so beautiful, congratulations!! The tutorial is very good and the graphics in general are also very beautiful. I found it very impressive that you managed to do all these things plus the dialogue system, the narrative, the items and doors, all in 48 hours!
But the lack of sound and especially the extremely punitive system of distant checkpoints makes the game very frustrating. I was not able to pass the key stage, even trying several times. A post-jam version with closer checkpoints and audio has great potential to be a game released on steam or something. Well done!
Absolutely gorgeous game and an amazing showcase of what heaps can do! My only complaint is the lack of checkpoints and sound. Though, I mean, this is compo... Holy shit dude. How did you do this in compo?
One of the most aesthetically pleasing games I've seen in this jam, and what a design! Would love to make some sounds for that!
Really very cool game. Cool graphics, water and idea.
AMAZING!
Wow great particle effects, also the map reveal looks really crip!
Very good as usual. Beautiful graphics, interesting unusual gameplay. A little bit poor mechanics.
Beautiful game! One of the best I've played yet! Polished graphics, gameplay and mechanics. Normally I am not a huge fan of platformers, but this entry is really engaging! Controls could perhaps use a bit of tweaking, although one gets used to them after a while. Perhaps mouse control for the water could be an option? Well done!
Super nice game! Love the low low pixel style, and the puzzle/ time attack of putting fires out. Great stuff <3
I liked the graphics and the fire system, sometimes it was a bit terrifying. Great music and sounds too /jk Nice work :)
wow, this game is amazing, the graphics are insane. i loved the water and fire sprite. I just miss a bit of sound. Is so beautiful to see hahahaha great game for 2 days. Congrats
Absolutely amazing work with the graphics and particle effects done in time for the compo. I'm sad you couldn't get audio in it, but I can 100% relate to that. I couldn't get it in time for the Jam  . Best of luck with your ranking! I wouldn't be surprised to see you in the top of the pack!!!
The game is an interesting romp where you're a platformer but need to keep your obstacles from spreading. My initial impression of the game was that the game was interesting but potentially the fire clearing could get a bit tedious. The saving grace was that it was actually rather fun to clean up a whole room. A bit like Visceral Cleanup.
But the end of the game really showed off what it was made of. I saw you wanted to give off the feel of a tense situation where the room is getting flooded with fire. You sorta achieved that here, though of course clearing out the room was doable. It was a bit like a puzzle game at that point, where time matters. How do you clear the room when the fire keeps spreading? What route should I take? How fast do I need to clear it?
These are not questions I often get to ask myself in a platformer. This ended up being a very unique experience in terms of gameplay and I was very surprised with what I saw. Great innovation here!
Wow, what a masterpiece for a LD submission! An absolutely polished and enjoyable experience from start to end - if only there were sound, but it's clear you spent that valuable time polishing up everything else. Great job!
The effects are really well done. It's very polished and the level design is very good. Awesome!
Awesome visuals, cool mechanic, nice level design. Just a shame it doesn't have any audio.
It desperately needs a checkpoint system though, I died in one of the longer levels after about 3 minutes and had to do it all over, which was a very frustrating.
Still an amazing game, congrats!
Incredible visuals and great mechanic. It was fun but some of the checkpoints felt too far away, at least for a jam game. The general pace is a little slow so going back over areas is somewhat tedious. I wish I could spray water while moving for example, maybe even use it to propel around a little. The largest gap was no audio. I could feel my brain deperately trying to hear the water sizzling the fire lol.
If there is such a thing as a gamejam AAA game, this is it! Near perfection in every category.
And then i see it entered COMPO ? WTF ?
Impressive visuals and top notch quality in general, as always. Fire and water effects looked and felt terrific. The fire explosions in particular added SO MUCH to the tension, the first time I experienced it I was genuinely holding my breath.
It's a pity there wasn't a proper ending because the level design offered a very natural and immersive progression towards a dramatic conclusion of sorts. Same goes for the lack of sound, but it is usually expected given the time constraints, especially for a compo game and more especially given the amount of work put in the level design and VFX areas.
As for the mechanics, controls were smooth. Perhaps I was more comfortable with them once I switched to a gamepad, but with a keyboard it was ok too.
I read you have plans to finish it? That would be great! :D
Congrats!
Excellent game! Visually impressive, especially given the time constraint. The firefighting mechanic is very well done. The fact that the fire actual spreads is very cool. Some sound would have really made this entry shine. There were a couple of times where I was stuck - I couldn't put out the fire below me because the platform blocked the water, and I couldn't climb down the ladder without touching the fire and dying. Unfortunately because of this I wasn't able to get to the end.
I love how you took a simple concept like firefighting and managed to make an interesting concept out of it with a mysterious story. I just wish we could have gotten some resolution to the narrative! I can tell you spent a long time on the particle effects because they look amazing; I especially liked the explosions of fire when you opened doors (shooting water up to save yourself in these situtations was also a very cool mechanic). Personally, I felt the difficulty was a little slow to progress at first. I really liked how the last level had a purple fire source that started faster, so you had to figure out how to put out the fire in a way that you ended with that. For a post-compo version, I would like to see more levels that make use of this mechanic in order to create more interesting puzzles with multiple of these purple fire sources.
Very interesting one, one of the most original in this jam. I love the fire and water physics! I also liked how the fog worked. Would love to read a devlog on this game. Very enjoyable, not much to improve (maybe perhaps add audio later if you have some time :D). Very fun game, would not be surprised if this game won the jam!
Here's my playthrough: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1007430228?t=4h39m55s
nb.png
This game is very interesting and fun to play! I love the water animations and the fire particle effects. You did a fantastic job for such a short time! Congrats on the awesome game. I had a bit of a difficult time jumping vs shooting water up since they were both the same button, maybe it would be more convenient to use a different button or some other solution. Otherwise fantastic game <3
Very very cool... (well, _hot_, to be fair). Loved the graphics. Fun gameplay. Became a little repetative after a while, but then I was probably taking too long to get through the levels. I'm afriad I couldn't make it to the end - I became stuck at a point where the fire kept regenerating from what looked like sparks on the floor - it meant I couldn't leave. I'm not sure if I was supposed to simply do it fast enough, or if there was some level element I could have used to stop the fire respawning. Still, it was loads of fun. The only complaint, other than sound, is that the collision on the platforms felt a bit off when jumping. Solid entry, well done.
- Really cool graphics - Fun story - Love the mechanics. The water is very satisfying - quite challenging ! Awesome job on this one especially for one person holy crap
Excellent game. great graphics and nice mechanics
incredible! only complaint is that the distance between checkpoints can be a little too long
Beautiful game. You can expand this into a full fledged release. The pixel particle effects and graphics are amazing. I would tweak the jumps (they're kind of floaty, they don't make much difference but they will feel better) and improve the controls (I did not like the keyboard mapping you have, I did not try the controller but I guess it's better - you should let them be remapped). This is impressive for a compo game. Congratulations!
Вот они, настоящие герои - пожарники! Бесстрашно они бросаются в горящие дома, на атомные станции, рискуя своей жизнью ради того, чтобы спасти жизни других! Слава пожарникам!
Очень интересная игра, жду продолжения ^_^
At the end of this game I felt like I'm actually qualified to be a firefighter. Jeez, this was an intense experience. People might complain that when you die the checkpoint is far behind, but man did that add to the experience. You were really afraid of the fire because of that punishment. I though it was an amazing game, especially knowing you've done this for 48 hours. Great job man!
I wish this had audio in it. I think it would really flesh out the experience and bring it all together. The water physics got me good. I enjoyed the experience so much I wish I could just have a game using this character to fill up a giant hole with water. The graphics were beautiful and the progression felt satisfying. It was a little hard to understand how the fire spread at first though it made sense I just wasn't expecting it and ended up feeling like Mr. Incredible a couple times. Getting a hold of the mechanic where you have to shoot water on yourself was a bit of a challenge at first as well. Once you have gone through the learning curve though this game becomes a little monotonous. Adding in some more unique puzzles would bring this game to the next level.
Really amazing, graphics are superb and look like a finished commercial game. Really impressed that you managed to make this in such short time!
I really like the idea of firefighting as a game mechanic. I agree with the other comments, and it definitely can be expanded into a full release.
wow! fantastic story and game! The graphics are on fire and the particle system for the water, fire and smoke top notch. I'm totally impressed of how much stuff you've managed to implement in two days just one man! Great entry, well done, my respect :)
The slowdown when opening an explosive door as you hold your breath to see if you started the self spray fast enough.... *chef's kiss*
I liked the game. But it would be better if the doors were more visible. I had trouble finding them.
Awesome entry! The visuals were fantastic. Really nice job with the water and fire interactions. I really wished it had sound, but the juicy visuals created some synesthesia for me that filled in the gaps. My only grips is with the controls, I felt like I kept jumping upward into fire when I wanted to aim upward and then start shooting water. I eventually learned to press space first and beat the game though.
Awesome game overall! Fantastic art style
I feel like there has been said so much about the game already that i want to add something else:
I really love that LD attracts so many different people and people with different professions, lifestyles and skillsets. Us amateur game enthusiasts as well as professional devs like you - and we all do it for fun. I also really like it to compare the stuff i manage to create to the gems that are possible with experience and know how.
Finished! Very fun but iritating sometimes - especially during magic fire appearing on last level :) Also as probably many people already suggested - add different button for jump - very often I jumped instead of spraying water. Also the platforming could use some tweaking (jump only on keydown). This is fullgame material here! I would also love to see some water particle physics maybe? Powerups like water pump jetpack - similar to Super Mario Sunshine. Good job overall!
It's amazing how even without any sound this game managed to amuse me so much. It looks extremely well polished, the graphics are AMAZING. I felt a little bit confused by the control inputs, but I guess that's just a matter of getting used to them. Great job!
Wow, impresive game, everything is perfect, too bad you couldn't add sound because it would have improved the mood tenfold
This is awesome ! I'm in love with the visual effects and how the fire behaves ! To bad there isn't sound though. Amazing work here ! Congratulations
Super cool game, the art is amazing, the platforming feels really good, the fire and water effects are great, the dialogue is cool, I hope you get some time to add sound to this in the future, you have a really solid project here!
This is nothing short of stunning. Brilliant work, perfect scores from me!
Lots of really great aspects to this! I love so many things about the art and animations. The explosion doors are soooo intense every time, even though it's reliable to survive them. The mood was really, really excellent. It felt like it was building to something grim. It's too bad there isn't a "real" ending, because I was really looking forward to the climax. Still, amazing job! It's so impressive how much mood you were able to create without sound!
This is great! The only thing I could though that was missing was a jump-spray and thats only to make the player fell even cooler :D Amazing visuals with the particles/shaders!
Fantastic game all around! using UP to jump and also to trigger an alt fire caused me to jump into a blazing hell by mistake many times
Ha! I played and commented on this on Itchio before realizing it was a game for this jam! Awesome entry, I loved the controls and it was really refreshing to be putting out fires in a game. Really dug this, awesome entry.
Really charming pixel graphics and general atmosphere! And the little text over the player was great. The physics for the water and the fire is pretty great and makes it fun to get further.
Obviously adding sound would do a lot to help the already great mood, and I know some people like the mix of old and new but I wish the smoke felt a bit more pixel-y like the amazing smoke and water - it feels a bit too HD at the moment and stands out against the rest of the graphics.
Really fun game. I liked how the doors would burst open and you have to quickly spray water on yourself. One thing I got a bit frustrated with was that I would accidentally release the spacebar and jump into fire. Music and sound effects would definitely help. Great work on the particles.
Very cool entry. Love the visuals. Sorry to say I got a little frustrated by some mechanics and the spread-out checkpoints.
Putting out every fire can get tedious, then one wrong move sends you back to do it all over, needing stop-n-go to put out the fires along the way. If I wasn't trying provide good feedback I would have quit after the first couple deaths. (I'm not a very patient gamer )
The UP key, also being used to jump, *and* aim while spraying, got me killed a few times, and I guess I rushed to aim before starting my spray, so that's my fault, but the punishment of being sent back so far is painful. In my defense, there aren't many games that play this way. I think most people would have just used a twin-stick setup with mouse-look.
There's one room, where you work your way up to a room with the keycard, and if you :face_palm: forget to put out the fire before going up the ladder, you end up trapped. (or was it the door bursting open and spreading to the floor below that trapped me?) "oh well, ya dun goofed, Back to the beginning of the room to meticulously make your way through the fire".
The distant checkpoints DO create a sense of high-stakes tension. Which can be a good thing, it's just a tricky balancing act, and easy to lose people like me with short patience.
*Anyway* Visually the game is AMAZING! I love the fog-of-war effect. All the particle effects and overall atmosphere was great. Even without music. I love the use of dialog in a way that doesn't obstruct gameplay. The presentation, and feeling like we're a bad-ass on a mission. (Although I'm not sure why 1 fire-fighter would be sent into a Nuclear Blaze all alone )
The lack of an ending is disappointing but understandable. ( I worked so hard to get there  )
Definitely a great LD game! Even if it frustrated me a bit!
Great work!
PS. Where the heck is the sprinkler system lol
Very innovative gameplay idea. Don't think I've played a firefighter in another game before. Also very impressive visuals for a game jam and good polishing. The interpretation of the theme felt a bit lazy, equalling progression with deep, but that's the way most games went. Also the lack of audio really hurts the overall feel. Overall still very impressive.
Nice as always, deepnight. Good to see you still at it!
Funny enough, the impressive particle effects and fire spreading mechanisms are going to steal the show here, leaving tons of important minor details underappreciated. A visibility + unexplored fog system? Multiple types of doors? Ladders?? Auto ledge hop??? Any of these things alone would stifle inexperienced devs to implement cleanly, but here they're just taken for granted because of COURSE everything works properly, lol.
I do wonder like some others, what this sort of game would feel like as a more fast-paced "run and gun" sort of game, with mouse to aim+shoot and keyboard to move. But that's altogether a different game which would feature different mechanics I'm sure.
Hope your kid enjoys the game :)
Really good game! The graphics are great, and the concept and gameplay are even more so. I like how you had a story going the deeper and deeper you went. It really had me interested in what was going on as I went. Shame you ran out of time to complete the story! The strategy that was involved in putting out a fire that keeps growing back was really fun as well. The only issue I had with the game was it would have been nice with some sound, though I get the problem of running out of time. I had the same thing happen in LD46. Overall I really liked this game, and I would totally play a post-compo version. Well done!
Very good. Very dungeon. Just little bit sad that no secret ending. chrome_NSmXSyfD8B.png
Great game, as always. Maybe it would be a good idea to spray water with LMB? It might be more clear and simple to control. Current controls forced me to play with one hand and its no so fun..
I really loved the visuals, that’s an eye candy.
I thought this was great. My only 2 issues are that I wish I could move and shoot at the same time and the first time you enter the door and it exploded didn't feel too fair. Granted you can respawn immediately, but it took me more times than I'm willing to admit to be able to read the text on what to do.
fun game! i liked the fact that if you left even a bit of fire around, it would spread! kept me on my toed :) Really beautiful graphics as well.
One thing that I found slightly frustrating was the movement + aiming controls being on the same keys. Eg when I tried to shoot up, I would sometimes jump up instead.
Incredible game. Loved the visuals. The blow back effect was particularly impressive. When I saw this was a 48h game I was impressed with what you were able to get done. Had it been a Jam game I would have a few suggestions for creative commons sound files from free sound project that would have a gone way to adding to the atmosphere.
I appreciated that the fire spread if you didn't attend to it. I thought it was the appopriate amount of challening too.
My only critical feedback is that pressing up to aim up and also to jump lead to a few accidental deaths. Had the key mapping been something like "arrows to move/aim, z to jump, and x to use water" it might have been a tiny bit better.
Otherwise incredible job. I'm jealous of your talent (particularly your artistic ability/design, incredible)
This was a really interesting entry! I thought the graphics were top notch -- I'm not usually a fan of excessive alpha blending, but it worked really well with your crisp sprite work. Love how you did the "fog of war" too.
The design of the gameplay was adventurous! It's fun, but I think its weak point is that it starts to feel repetitive pretty quick, because you're basically always shooting at a static enemy, a scenario which often plays out pretty similarly. It starts to get more interesting when the order of operations needs to be a certain way (have to clear a room from the other side, rather than just dropping down into the fire... etc.). So, working in more puzzles like that would be one way to make it more interesting... another easy way would be to find an excuse to work in more traditional enemies (back-and-forth moving fireballs, etc.) but that might be a cop-out from exploring your main mechanic.
Great work! Very nice pixel art, polish and controls. Would have loved to hear some music or sound design but understandable with the time constraints. Please keep me in mind if you ever in need of audio! Gonna go check out some of your other games as well, they look awesome :)
I had an absolute blast playing this game !
It's only lacking some nice sound effect and a little music to be perfect
Woah, the game is so cool. The graphic and the visual effect make the game very polished. Unexpected to see such great work finished under 48 hours.
Looks more polished that many games I've played that have been done in much much longer time. Amazing entry, maybe the best I've played so far. Congratulations!
Impressive work especially on the pixeart aesthetic. You deserve my respect creating such a game so cool in less than 48 hours. Controls work fine as expected and water/fire FX are gorgeous. I have fun playing. As others said, it could be really better with sounds and background track for ambient. Overall, it's one of the best entries that I saw for this 48th LudumDare session. Well done ++
The art is incredible. I often died due to troubles with the controls. The movement and the directional watergun should be detached from each other - since the order of up and space meant progess or death. Probably some kind of "move with WASD - shoot with arrow-keys" would be perfect for this game.
Congratulations I liked your game, I found the particle system very beautiful, and the characters very charismatic, what bothered me a bit was the speed of the fall after the jump, the player seems to be very light different from the speed of the stairs, I hope you continue this project and includes missions and scattered items, maybe rescuing people might be a good suggestion, other than using other objects to release passages like an ax, I really like your work, if you can give me feedback on my game I will be very happy, a great hug.
Wow, very cool! I love the graphics. The dialog and theme is great. The gameplay is good. Very fun, all around.
This is a pretty cool jam game. I love how it looks, and I love how the water and fire interact with eachother.
It's a great looking game, and the mechanics are fun, but how the HELL am i supposed to finish that level with the regenerating pink flames?!
Where's the music and sounds? All the time while playing I had the theme from Backdraft playing in my head;) This game is sooo awesome! Nice gameplay! I love the animations of the water and fire/smoke, really nice!! I also liked those dialogues texts. The only thing I would consider to change are the checkpoints, they should happen be more often. Besides this, I had a lot of fun!! Congrats!!!
The pixel art is great and the fire, water and smoke effects work really nicely. Some audio would have been great of course particularly because the setting really lends itself to being atmospheric and sfx/music would have really helped bring that out. The fire spreading is really nice and adds a fun strategic element to making sure you keep it all under control before it blocks your path, The core mechanic is fun but by the end is starting to feel a touch repetitive. Still made it to the end.
[Played compo edition] Jumping was a bit off - it seemed like I would jump up, fall down and at the last 20% of my fall snap to the floor. I don't hate it - it has it's own flair, but I've seen a lot of the other comments mention a similar thing.
I wanted to commend a small detail I noticed by accident which is how holding space on a ladder made you slide down :)
It wasn't immedielty clear to me that those pipe things could be jumped up onto and on the 'fireball' section I got stuck for a few minutes as the game never told me about how the down arrow would protect me from such things (I figured some would still get through anyway?) I couldn't tell when the door would open or why it wasn't opening at some points and would have loved a specific key to press to do that and at some points it seemed like I could jump up on places that weren't intuitive and would have allowed for me to 'bypass' a puzzle. Also the text hint for the spacebar+down key was always partially obscured by the fireball, in a random place and did nothing to pull my attention away from the giant fireball towards it compounding the issues.
A final thing, I too am sad there was no big ending but I did like the story that was there it was intruiging and interactive!
But don't let that discourage you (Not hat it seems like you could ever be discouraged!) This game looks absolutely gorgeous and it feels amazing. I would expect nothing less from deepnight :) And here's a little 'thanks' for creating LDTK!
Wonderful pixel art fire and water. And the gameplay gets more and more interesting (when collecting the key cards) and complex. Maybe there could be more checkpoints, especially during the bigger rooms. Really cool game, can't wait to see how it feels with chiptune music and sound effects. Great entry!
This is incredibly well done! I got a little frustrated by the long time between checkpoints, but the game just looks and plays so well. Great job!
The graphics are outstanding, it is incredible to make a pixel game with such wonderful graphics
As always fantastic game! Too bad you didn't had time to add sound effects, I'm sure you would have pulled of some great ones. Some parts are a bit hard, therefore I would have wished the kid friendly mode is already there, but I somehow managed to get through anyways
This was a great game! I really liked the fire graphics. Also I definitely felt the stress of needing to triple check that each fire was put out before moving on which was nice. Thanks for the fun game!
What a great look! Would have loved the ability to spray water in midair, felt like a big disconnect for me between that and the overall platformy feel. That plus more checkpoints, having different button for jumping and aiming upwards... a few other improvements to be made, but I appreciated how it really did feel like battling through a building, fighting a fire.
Bonjour! C'est tellement beau et ça bouge tellement bien j'y croyais pas pour une compo... Puis j'ai vu la page itch et les projets... C'est un honneur de voir le jeu d'un grand maître !
Translation for non-Bordeaux lovers : Hello! It's so beautiful and it moves so well, I couldn't believe it for a compo... Then I saw the itch page and the projects... It's an honor to see the game of a great master!
The fire, water, and smoke pixel animations were beautiful! The built-in tutorial was well done, and the discussion with mission control had a lot of potential for adding a cool storyline. I think the movement speed of the player felt a little slow at times, but otherwise the controls felt good, especially for controlling the water direction. The feeling of putting out one fire only for another to spread somewhere else was infuriating, which I assume was exactly your intent. Nice work!
The art and effects in this are fantastic, loved the water, smoke and fire effects. Made it fun to just play with the hose and shoot the water around. Impressed at what you were able to do and nice to see you try something different for another game jam. Always enjoy seeing what you make for these. Would have been nice to have sound and music but it being a jam game it's always understandable you don't get enough time to do everything you want.
Very nice! The graphics look great, and the mix of pixel art and the water/fire being in a different style was an interesting take.
I loved the character: all helmet, and with controls that made me feel their bulk. Nice that I had to stop to use water and couldn't just spam it.
I made it to the point with the purple sparkles that re-create new fire, and after having to restart the 5th time I gave up. The problem was that the restart sends me several minutes backward, which is a lot of repetition for a jam and this in turn made me impatient which made me careless which made me die. Once I entered this downward spiral I lost heart.
I think with sound even this would have not mattered because the vibe and environment are really great, so with that extra sense in play I bet it would be amazing.
Really nice job on the art and the core mechanics. I also enjoyed the mystery of the story, and was sorry I didn't have heart to make it to the end.
This was epic for a compo game, amazing job with story, graphics and the theme. Good luck with adapting it for a 3 yo haha, I also have 3 yo who I adapted the last LD for and he still has the most fun on the options screen messing with the sound fx ahah.
So cooooool !
Nice twist, why is there so few firefighter games ?!
Fire spread work very well and create the right tension. Graphic are simple and efficient, character is very cute !
I love how the narration is distilled, simple and elegant :ok_hand:
I wish doors stay unlocked between deaths, it can be a little frustrating to redo all the level sometimes.
But very well done ! Thank you !
I thought it was cool but I was very impatient with the time it took to do things, I would've preferred if it was a quicker experience. But cool nonetheless
