LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Tiefenrausch: Raptures of the Deep by mde 2021-04-28T16:58:30Z

The audio and visuals are simple but very effective, creating a strong atmosphere, which is helped by the lighting.

The theme is serviceable but nothing out of the ordinary.

From the innovation point of view I enjoyed the newspaper framing but didn't find anything particularly innovative within the gameplay.

The weakest point for me was the actual gameplay. It's still not bad but very basic and lacks any diversity. So when I reached the bottom I was ready to be done with the game only to find out I had to go back up. Also the balancing seems a bit off. I couldn't figure out how to avoid the octopus but easily avoided the sharks by just swimming near the floor and the punishment for getting hit is barely noticeable.

Areas to improve: Make the enemies more threatening (more aggressive and/or harder punishment for being hit) Add some variety to the gameplay (e.g. an enemy that slowly chases you to increase urgency; a means to defend yourself; a short dash to escape enemies; ...)

Overall it is a good entry with a strong atmosphere and serviceable gameplay. The criticism is on a high level and considering the time restraints a lot of it might simply be out of the scope for a game jam game. Good job and sorry for the novel.

Nuclear blaze by deepnight 2021-05-06T11:37:42Z

Very innovative gameplay idea. Don't think I've played a firefighter in another game before. Also very impressive visuals for a game jam and good polishing. The interpretation of the theme felt a bit lazy, equalling progression with deep, but that's the way most games went. Also the lack of audio really hurts the overall feel. Overall still very impressive.

Overall a great entry and really well polished for a game-jam game. My biggest criticism would be that the controls felt a tad sluggish, which might just be personal preference.

Deep Love for Chocolate by TwistedHawk 2021-05-04T14:18:16Z

Cute visuals and soundtrack and also a nice interpretation of the theme. My major problem with the game was that I didn't feel like I had any agency on whether I got hit or not.

HELL deep is your love? by Villanelle 2021-05-05T13:04:10Z

Really nice entry. Especially liked the art and audio. From the gameplay point of view I see some minor issues but those have already been mentioned. Great work.

Dungeon Painter by IanTheBee 2021-05-04T16:37:33Z

Nice simplistic visuals and meaty sound effects combined with a cool idea make this a very nice entry. The one thing I'm personally missing is urgency. You can (or have to) take it very slow thus giving the entire game a slow pacing. I personally would've enjoyed it more if the pacing was faster, which certainly would cause more deaths, but your paint stays when respawning. Might just be personal preference though.
