very good :)

radgegames 2020-10-06 02:57

I liked this! I spent about 10 minutes just moonwalking on the sidewalk like a boss

jordanfb 2020-10-06 03:39

It's a shame there isn't all that much there story wise, I like the graphics a lot and the mood is quite good! Some lighting and it would look fantastic! Solid music, interesting seeming story, could be interesting to finish it! At some points things got a little disjointed since I talked to people in the wrong order, but it seems like it's a work in progress so I'm sure you guys are aware. I've had some good luck with using Yarn Spinner to deal with story stuff like this and to manage story state and it works with Unity, you guys should check it out. Nice work.

zepimppotatoe 2020-10-06 08:48

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Indeed we did not have enough time to fully end the story like we wanted and we know about the order of interactions but we hope to fix all of these in a future update. We will try the Yarn Spinner once the jam is over. Hope you will check back the game when we will release a full version of it. Follow us on itch.io to get notified. Cheers!

I really loved the music and the general atmosphere of the game. Street lights are very cool!

Story ends on a cliffhanger, which is a shame - I hate cliffhangers  It also feels somewhat disjointed, for example: If I go to examine the poisoned guy first, I should not know about the glass with powder (as I didn't examine it yet), but my character acts like I know about it and already examined it. Seems like the story has an established sequence of events and doesn't react to you doing things in a different order at all. I'm also a bit dubious about the powder. How can you place poison in ice cubes, and yet have some powder left around the glass? If the poison is powdered, wouldn't it dissolve when placed in water and then made into ice cubes? Or is there some other way of poisoning ice cubes that I'm missing ?

Found a bug, I think - maybe it's intentional. When the game makes you leave the bar and resets the loop, the transition happens so fast that all you see of text is "As you leave the b". There is also some text strangeness that could use corrections (e.g. "Describe me the criminal", "Where are trying to get at?").

Overall, it's not a bad jam game but could use some story polishing. Good work!

redrising 2020-10-06 10:36

@fabula-rasa The story was meant to be played in a particular order as you guessed. We didn't get to set certain conditions for that to happen because we unfortunately ran out of time. We tried to connect certain pieces of evidence in order for the detective to figure out what happened. It came out really sloppy story-wise. As for the powder in the glass, we assumed that the person consumed his beverage as the powder was dissolving, so there was a bit left(just enough for the detective to mention it). I know it's a bit of a stretch. Thank you for your feedback and for playing the game!

2020-10-06 11:11

I like the atmosphere of the game and the music is very nice. Small bugs here and there, but overall is a nice game.

zepimppotatoe 2020-10-06 11:18

@mihaiiii Thanks a lot for the feedback. We hope to continue the story further and fix all the bugs but after LD is over. You can always follow us and check the game again when it s fully fledge.

fraxle 2020-10-06 14:03

Very nice atmosphere, looking forward to the future of this game. Art and music are fantastic.

zepimppotatoe 2020-10-06 14:21

@fraxle thanks a lot for the input and that you chose to play our game. It means a lot for some starters like us. Thanks.

toasteater 2020-10-06 16:18

The visuals are really nice! Even though the story is unfinished, having a working build by the end is already an achievement. Hope you all will go on to create greater works in the future!

melon-spirit 2020-10-07 00:05

Wow, the dialogue system was really developed and I liked the art you made, the fog really adds to the atmosphere! I notice some people said they like the music but on my computer there was no music so not sure why that is. Only thing I might suggest is in the title screen the (rain?) was kind of weird because you could only see it in front of the buttons and maybe a slightly lighter background could help it look better.

theseusinabottle 2020-10-07 01:53

I enjoyed playing this quite a bit. Your music was good and I enjoyed where the story was going. Cliffhangers always leave mixed feelings but it a game jam so I can't really expect War and Peace or somthing. The whole team should give themselves a nice pat on the back for making a good game.

nailuj29-gaming 2020-10-07 18:14

I liked the story a lot. The music was also very good.

100th-coin 2020-10-07 18:22

Woah, i love the artwork! The rainy cityscape is such a cool setting! Great work on the writing too! Marvelously done.

rizekcajk 2020-10-07 18:31

Really nice quick game that ends on a cliffhanger. For some reason the time loop didn't play correctly and the text got cut, so I didn't even notice I was at the start again. Very helpful would be the ability to skip text for when you accidentaly click the same NPC again or when you are playing scenes you already saw.

zepimppotatoe 2020-10-08 18:38

@toasteater Thanks a lot for trying our game and yes, we want to continue the story and maybe have a fully playable game after ld is over. Thanks.

@melon-spirit We didn t have enough time so the title screen was something we did as fast as we could so we compromised between the looks and time spend on it. About the fog, we first wanted to make some pixelated fog generator or something dynamic but after a few tries we just accepted the fact that we had not enough time so we went with just static sprites of smoke overlapped.

@theseusinabottle Nobody likes cliffhangers. We had the whole story planned out on our whiteboard but sadly the time was too short for our team to be able to make the whole game. We are happy that we managed to get a working build up and running with the first scene completed.

@nailuj29-gaming Thanks for the feedback dude. You rock!

@blobo We appreciate every input we get. We really wanted to make a dark rainy mood detective style game and we glad that we got that across. We got inspired by games like " The last door " and " Darkside Detective "

@rizekcajk Yeah, we had kinda a lot of bugs and quirks that we had not enough time to repair so we just said live it as it is and see what the public says. Thanks for trying our game.

kharath 2020-10-08 21:18

Nice game! It was ambitious for a 72hr jam but you got a lot done! I wouldn't beat yourself up about not finishing the story.

Positive: * Nice mood * Good pixel art * Good music * Interesting story * Dialog system

Negatives: * Some rough edges with the dialog mentioning things I hadn't done * Obviously not much to it yet

shubart 2020-10-08 21:35

Nice job. Nice mood. Thank you for your game

indieronin 2020-10-09 03:12

Hey guys any way you can throw a web build up I would like to give it a try?

kaafirookie 2020-10-09 11:00

That was a really good playable demo! I like how we gather information in a loop and then solve the problem in the next one based on out knowledge acquired in the first one. A lot of potential and left me wanting for more! It's a bit rough around the edge, the dialog system is good for a jam, but need a bit of improvement - Blacking-out already said stuff, not disable just visual cue - Disabling player locomotion animation when in dialogue - I was able to trigger the dialogue multiple times if pressed E, and the dialogue restarts, so maybe allow player to choose using the movement keys and select with E when in dialogue would be nice, since the mouse interaction felt useless.

That being said I love the mood you set and a nice little setup for a story, I'm really excited to see where you guys take this because I saw a to be continued in the end!

I wish the whole team best of luck and don't feel down, you guys made a good base demo with a lot of potential for interesting storytelling with perhaps multiple outcomes.

fachscahfttf 2020-10-09 11:10

This was a cool game. The art and music was pretty fitting. Also liked the rainy mood!

However the gameplay is not finished, is it, i talked to the bartender after the Drinking Guy, and clicked walk away after i got his drink. It then revealed that he tried to poison me with the icecubes. Seems like the dependencies of the events are not bugfree.

But i like the way this is going! Keep it up

gonzalol 2020-10-09 11:36

It's a promising game. I like the art design. Hope you'll able to finish it!

zepimppotatoe 2020-10-09 19:41

@kharath Thanks a lot for pointing out the good and the bad things about it. Yeah, we didn t have enough time to complete it, and it was our first game we did as a team so we had to learn a lot from eachothers and how to cooperate. Thanks a lot anyway for the input and we hope to make somoething even better after and maybe release it somewhere.

@shubart No, thank you for playing the game and giving us a chance! You rock dude!

@indieronin Sorry, we are quite new to this and do not quite know how, i think it something to do with unity build?

@kaafirookie Thanks a lot for the input and indeed, we know some things can be improved, some things fixed and other such tasks but we did not manage to do it in the remaining time. Thanks for trying our game and hope you check our game when we will release a full version not just a demo like this. And about the story, i will say a sneak peak, when you enter the bar, the detective should have said "Hey, batman?", then batman would appear and the detective be like "Ah sorry, typo, i meant barman" and the batman would transform in a barman. Thanks dude and be sure to follow us!

@fachscahfttf Yes, the game is quite far from calling it finished. We did what we could to prove the ideas we had and the main mechanic of the game. Happy to see that you liked it anyway and try to follow us if you want more. We will upload a full version when all it s done. Thanks.

@gonzalol Yup, we hope we can finish it too! Be sure to check it out when you see it! Thanks for the feedback dude! Cheers!

somogy 2020-10-09 20:21

What an incredible game! I loved it, great job

vivien-fargette 2020-10-09 21:09

I don4t usually do that but I am gonna go into a pro/cons list as I have a lot to say

Pros * Really nice art * Dialogue system is quite advanced for a jam result * Story based game: I love story based games and it had a good start * Nice music and really good mood * I loved the animation in the street, it make the city alive

Cons: * Pressing 'e' during a dialogue restarted the dialogue, in my opinion, having 'e' make you go at the end of the current line and then start next line would be the best option * Dialogues that were talking about things I had not done yet ("he is lying" while I didn't talk to the "he") * The last text that I had difficulties reading before going back at the start (and the phrase seems to not finish) * If you accord importance to the theme, I don't think it really fits into it: it feels more like"start a new game" than "stuck in a loop". Having a small intro or final phrase explaining why you come back at the start would do the trick tho and it goes into having a more in depth story (which is hard in jams)

Overall, it's not a bad game but clearly needs a lot of polishing and more development and has a lot of potential. For a first jam, it is quite a good result and you just learned the most important rule of jams: don't aim too high ;) Congrats on your results anyway and I hope you will continue to develop this game, I am pretty sure it will be fun to play once finished :D

mackandrius 2020-10-11 19:05

Looks amazing, great music, atmosphere and mood. I would suggest tho, that it'd be great if it would be possible to click on a dialog box to load instantly rather than having it load up every time. Congrats tho, amazing job especially with this little time!

kr4ft3r 2020-10-14 00:47

It's always nice to see an attempt at a living city with this graphics style, takes me back to good old times when we were imagining how far will video games go in that regard.

Excellent art. The story is ok, I managed to not get myself killed, I'm happy enough with that. No point in listing shortcomings as you clearly didn't had time to make the game you wanted. Make it less ambitious next time. I made that mistake this LD, didn't even manage to publish it in time, the game's link is on my profile text.

totteri 2020-10-14 21:33

This game is pretty good! I'm not sure how I feel about the music, I thought it was pretty mixed. But the graphics are nice, and I like the atmosphere.

vesk 2020-10-17 14:10

Help, I couldn't finish the game. I talked to the bartender, then went into the bathrooms, and then talked to the drunk guy, but after that, there doesn't seem to be anything else I can do. Also on first try I talked to the drunk guy first and couldn't then talk to the bartender. I really want to play the game, because it has an amazing aesthetic. It has a really cool Darkside Detective vibe. Could you make a walkthrough video or at least a short guide?
