Nice entry! I really like the mood, the graphics and the music in this game. It's really addictive to explore the caves and mine the ores on the beat. The customisation is a really fun addition! Especially for a game that's made within 72 hours.

A few cons; It wasn't really clear to me why you have to choose how many ores I had to sell. Did I need these ores later in the game? Did I miss something? Also the delay between hitting the WASD-keys and moving the player was a bit too much. Especially for a rhythm-game.

Overall; Nice entry!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 09:21

@the-martijn Thank you so much for the kind words it really means a lot! We were quite proud of the customisation hehe! Feel free to share your dwarfy creation with us on Twitter!

That's fair point and could've been explained more for sure, basically you miss nothing by not selling/selling, though the prices may differ on the floor you are  We did have some plans to enhance the shop but the 72 hours wasn't enough time for it! Maybe in a post jam update! Yeah we realised that needed some work! Thanks again! :sparkles:

head-tilt-games 2021-04-27 10:19

This was a really awesome and so glad to see customisation as a feature! I would have liked the movement delay to be a little less because it was slightly off putting. Other than that, well done. The music, art, mood and enjoyment are all extremely good. Well done, keep it up!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 11:05

@head-tilt-games Thank you for the kind words, customisation just felt so right to add! - Yeah we did notice some movement issues so hopefully on a future release that can be fixed! :D

Thanks so much for the kind words!

jaoel 2021-04-27 13:18

Really cool Crypt-of-the-necrodancer-like (is that a real genre?) I love how you put in the effort to add character customization as well!

As others have commented, the movement feel a little unresponsive. I think responsive controls is one of the most important things to get right in a rhythm game like this. The GDC session "The Best Animation Tricks of the Trade" from 2016 has a great section about responsive animation and anticipation that I highly recommend you checking out!

Other than that I think this is a solid entry. Cute graphics and amazing music (I ran around in a circle for a while just listening to the soundtrack :P)

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 14:19

@jaoel Thank you so much for the kind words! Funnily enough that was a game we were inspired by (and if it's not it should be for sure!)

Hopefully movement is something we can fix post jam! - We will check that out! :D Thank you for the recommendation!

I was doing that the entire testing process! :D

moski 2021-04-27 15:52

This game oozes style. One of my favourites of the jam so far. Give a pat in the back to @tkimuse, 'cause the music really ramps up the experience.

But there's pretty much nothing not to like about this game. Great graphics, a bunch of style, attention to detail and so much polish. *Of course* there's character editing. *Of course* the music ramps up with the combo multiplier. *Of course* there are short puns and comments between levels. That's polish, that's style, that's heart.

The one thing that could have made this super addictive would have been sound effects. These going along with the beats and the music would have been a dopamine induced headbanging time. I hope there's an opportunity to add them at some point in the future, or to have that in mind for future projects. But rest assured that this doesn't affect my opinion on the audio of the game. Superb music!

LD website kept me from commenting here for over half an hour. I'd say that refreshing every now and then was well worth it just to tell you your game is a blast! :whale:

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 15:58

@moski Thank you honestly for such a lovely and heartwarming comment (and for sharing a picture! Your Dwarf is styling :sunglasses: )

It really feels great to see all the lovely comments you had, and we are glad you liked the puns between levels!

Sound effects would be a really nice addition, maybe post jam! Thanks for the suggestion!

:sparkling_heart:

casual-dutchman 2021-04-27 15:59

@moski Such a nice comment, thank you!

Good ... Someone found the puns!

klaus-peter 2021-04-27 16:23

Didn't really understand what the sell options were for since I was selling all ore anyway but I be vibing :notes::musical_note: xD

eugenik 2021-04-27 16:51

Congratulations, creative idea. A crazy game.

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 17:48

@klaus-peter Vibing is all that matters 😌 (we did plan on adding upgrades 😅)

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 17:48

@eugenik Thank you so much!

evil-villain-games 2021-04-27 18:04

Good job on the presentation! I played till I was quite wealthy but I wasn't sure how much health I had before I died.

ryder-studios 2021-04-27 18:11

I really like that more instruments are there, the better you are. Next time maybe try avoiding mixels when working with pixel art. Overall great game

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 18:25

@evil-villain-games Thank you so much! Hope you enjoyed the beats! The health is equal to your combo streak when it gets too low you die! We do have plans to make it clearer post jam!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-27 18:26

@ryder-studios Yes! I'm glad you noticed that! Yeah I tried but I guess I got sloppy in some instances 😅 Thank you for the kind words!

gamesplusjames 2021-04-27 22:32

This was really fun! A rhythm game like this really thrives on the music and thankfully it was fantastic. I love how the different instruments came in as your combo built up. The level design was fun too! I was a little confused about how low I was able to go on my meter before dying but then I died so mystery solved! :D Great work on this!

tauheed-game-dev 2021-04-28 01:52

There's nothing I don't love about this game, Epic music, Awesome Art and solid game play. maybe there is one thing I don't love, those Pink slimes are a nightmare. great job

cammin 2021-04-28 05:51

I'm a massive fan of crypt of the necrodancer with 50+ hours into that game, So I think it's amazing that some inspiration was taken here! :)

I can appreciate the dwarf puns that show up between floors. The art is also very nice. I like the particle effect that appears every beat.

Exploring the caves is fun. Giving me some stardew valley vibes.

The character customization is interesting, especially for the social media potential. I can also respect the amount of time put into making this screen.

I think that my only inconvenience is the animations being too delayed between each beat. I expected more snappy instantaneous movement so that the game feels more responsive. However, The actual animations themselves for both the player and enemies feel polished, so I think it's just the timing part that needs some attention.

It may also be interesting to increase the speed of the song as you do deeper down to increase difficulty as well to make it more exciting.

All in all, a well put together game that has a decent length to it, and a nice rhythm system set up here. Great job!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 07:49

@gamesplusjames Thank you so much for the kind words! :D You are right, luckily we had a fantastic composer working with us who sorted out our music needs! :D - Yeah I think it does take a little getting used!

Thanks for the kind words!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 07:49

@tauheed-game-dev That's just being too kind! But thank you, those Pink slimes were a menace!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 07:51

@cammin One of the early/less serious name ideas was "Crypt of The Necrominer" sooo

Thank you so much for the kind words (and for appreciating our puns, glad they weren't b'ore-ing!) and for liking the customisation! A mechanic which I am so glad we added!

I think many people would agree with you, and this is something we will look into post jam, and it getting faster as its get harder is a great idea!

Thank you so much again! :D

zyger 2021-04-28 08:46

Awesome game dude. Love the graphics and the customization factor is really cool and must of taken a long time. Really neat and great submission

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 09:41

@zyger Thank you very much! That's really great to hear (and not just because I did the graphics :joy: ) !

judgezedd 2021-04-28 10:02

Had a *lot* of fun with that! The way the music progresses along with your performance, and the very *forgiving* way that your combo meter doesn't just immediately plummet made this an incredibly satisfying game to play. Excellent job.

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 10:07

@judgezedd Thanks for playing! :D I am glad you enjoyed it!

bogurodzica 2021-04-28 14:04

Gosh. I have 200h in Necrodancer and to be honest I have enjoyed it at the same level. Dwarf puns are amazin, I wish they occur more frequently! Also it was hard for me to understand sell option.

saussol 2021-04-28 14:10

Overall great game Good job

m11 2021-04-28 14:18

Lots of fun - and brilliant artwork!

korfi 2021-04-28 14:21

Super cute character, it felt very much like necrodancer! I didn't fully understand the sell feature and thus I just sold everything on every floor. Nice audio and nice visuals, overall a really solid game! :D

midnightmist 2021-04-28 14:49

What an awesome concept! Great job all around, I had a lot of fun :D Loved the song!

casual-dutchman 2021-04-28 15:07

@bogurodzica Glad you enjoyed it! The pun were a must!

We had an idea for you to buy things like a better pickaxe or health and such. But we decided to prioritize polish over content.

@korfi I guess this reply is also a repsonse to your comment

valeth2124 2021-04-28 16:38

Awesome concept, an ingenious mix between dungeon crawler and rhythm game! Good job man, I'd want to see you expand the rhythm bar tho, it gets easy to follow and repetitive after a while, maybe vary the distance between each bar as the level progresses would be quite fun xD Still I'm surprised by the amount of the content you got there, from the character creator to the selling options of the ores you have mined. A solid jam entry overall.

alaah 2021-04-28 17:19

This game is way too easy, [idk why](https://i.imgur.com/x5WVjjD.png).

The huge input delay makes it honestly difficult to enjoy. It feels out of sync by half a phase, all the time. It's really a shame because the audio&visuals are top notch.

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 19:37

Lots of people! Let's go! @bogurodzica Glad you enjoyed it! :D More puns will be coming in future updates/update I will make sure of it!

@saussol Thank you very much!

@m11 Thank you!

@korfi Really glad you enjoyed it! I thought the character was pretty cute too!

@midnightmist Thank you so much! It's really heartwarming to see that people enjoyed it!

@valeth2124 That would be a great idea, maybe faster songs will equal faster beats in the future ;) - And thank yo u so much

@alaah It's a mystery, we will never know  - Yeah we did notice that as an issue, will hopefully get fixed in the future!

gramozilho 2021-04-28 20:02

Hell yes! Lost track of time playing that jut now. Music was great, visuals are cute, not to unforgiving at the start which is so good. A couple more tunes, a few upgrades and more things to discover and I'd be stuck here for hours. Congratulations to the team!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 20:10

@gramozilho Ahh! That's so lovely to hear  Thank you so much for the kind words! Adding more content could definitely be arranged!

msipp27 2021-04-28 21:01

music didn't seem to be working

briibot 2021-04-28 21:13

Such a fun game to play, you did an excellent job with it! The art style was charming, the music was on point for a beat game, and I really enjoyed the character customization - it's something you see in so few ludum dare games, but it's so nice to have! The character design was charming, and the entire game had a great, cohesive style - it really meshed well together!

I had a little bit of a difficult time following my HP, and there were times I couldn't really tell if it was going up or down, or why - perhaps an HP bar, or some variety of guide for damage would be really helpful in that regard!

With regards to money and selling things, I also wasn't certain in the game what the point of only selling some of the ores you collected was - was there some kind of benefit to keeping ores on you that I just completely missed? I always ended up clicking 'sell all and continue' for them.

I could hear the music ramping up sometimes, which I assume is when you get a better combo, but I was never able to ramp it up very much - I'm not excellent at rhythm games, so that very easily could have been the cause. Still, it felt very satisfying whenever I *did* start hearing the claps, so kudos for that.

Overall a great and well put together experience! Your team did well, and I can't wait to see what other games you make for future jams!! ☆☆☆☆☆

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 22:41

@msipp27 Oh really? Like no music at all?

gamesbysaul 2021-04-28 22:42

@briibot Thank you so much for the kind words!

For the HP, it is equal to your combo/streak at the side but we agree that could be made clearer and same with keeping ores, certain ores sell better on different floors but we didn't have enough time to make that clearer.

Thank you so much for playing!

plaskijakdeska 2021-04-28 22:53

Stellar work! I'm a huge fan of the Crypt of The Necrodancer, loved your take on that gameplay loop! The music is also genuinely pleasant to listen to, which in my opinion in a rythm game is one of the most important challenges. Overall really nice entry in this years jam.

doctortm 2021-04-28 23:21

Wow, great rhythm game! loved the graphics and the sounds. Great jam!!

msipp27 2021-04-29 00:03

@gamesbysaul yeah, it might be a webgl problem tbh

gamesbysaul 2021-04-29 07:11

@plaskijakdeska Thank you so much! We had a great composer who made sure that everyone would be enjoying the music whilst playing!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-29 07:12

@doctortm Thank you so much!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-29 07:13

@msipp27 How weird 🤔 no one else has had the issue, we'll look into it!

one-seed-fruit 2021-04-29 18:04

Crypt of the Necrodancer!! I only hear music in the main menu though. And wow character customization!!

gamesbysaul 2021-04-29 19:44

@one-seed-fruit Yes! :D That's so weird, it works fine for me but I've seen a few of those issues now hmm, I am glad you liked that!

bungalow 2021-04-30 08:57

This game was so sick!! the art was adorable, the gameplay was intuitive and the controls were responsive! Very impressive for a jam game! You should be proud!

casual-dutchman 2021-04-30 11:58

@bungalow Thank you so much, that is so nice to hear :D We are very proud

nature-studioz 2021-04-30 19:09

Great game. For some reason. You can't hear the music if the volume range is less than 60. Otherwise. Fun and simple game. I would be very happy if you would play my game.

casual-dutchman 2021-05-01 11:05

@nature-studioz Thanks! The audio slider implementation was really quick, we should probably make the range a little better

andidebob 2021-05-03 12:05

What a truly fun game! Loved being able to make my metal dwarf with red eyes and beard, black clothes and pink headphones. I wish that some styles had some impact on the music that was playing during the game. And honestly that's the only thing that bugs me a bit, the music while being easy to listen to kind of fell short for a rythm game. It restated on every level with it's slow intro, I think it should just jump right into the action. And I also with the little count at the start of the level had some more feedback to get you right in the mood. Otherwise the gameplay is really good. The visual feedback for the beat works nicely and the mechanics work nicely. If you ramp up the music this is an awesome game!

timo-gass 2021-05-03 19:05

Ohh, that's a great game! :D Really had a lot of fun playing this. Graphic is nice and the beat is motivating! The cusomization felt a bit "unnecessary"?

The one time I died was at the beginning of the level where my dwarf just didnt move :/

Anyways a really great game. One of the best I've played.

gamesbysaul 2021-05-03 19:50

@andidebob Thank you for the feedback, I love the sound of your dwarf! :D It would be cool to have different styles of dwarf = different styles of music!

And that's a good bit of feedback, I think we also wanted to prepare for all skill levels, I for one am awful at rhythm games, but we can look into that!

Thanks again for playing!

gamesbysaul 2021-05-03 19:51

@timo-gass I am glad you liked it! - And maybe uncessary but I wouldn't say unwelcome, it's just a small extra feature to add some personality to your playthrough! :D

How odd, may have been a bug, we can look into that!

Aww that's too kind thank you so much! :sparkles:

lichead-studio 2021-05-07 12:00

Well done! Music and customisation are great.

laurari 2021-05-16 11:33

Great job! I really like the customizations, those hairs... xD :haircut:

I'm not the best at follow-the-rythm kind of games, but the part I tried, I really enjoyed it  Great entry for this LD!!

casual-dutchman 2021-05-17 09:21

Thanks @lichead-studio

@laurari Thanks! Even though the game might be harden than you're used to, I'm glad you enjoyed :D
