I believe movement works per turn (one move = one turn), I think a little delay between moves would help a lot, as well as a counter to know when night is coming.

With that being said, the game is amazing, the night effects, the art is simple and delicate, and the menu navigation is fully functional.

Congratulations!

Very nice looking art! Interaction with objects was easy thanks to the menu. I also liked how the little thoughts that came up acted as an in game tutorial. Very cool game!

I played this way more than I thought I would. At first it was really frustrating but once I understood the controls and that it was actually turn based it became quite fun. I died many times at like 7 wood and stone before I finally managed to build a shelter (the trick was to place your campfires easily accessible to pick up the wood and stone when it burnt out).

Unfortunately I accidentally pressed Escape after building it which froze the game in the HTML5 version. However, I don't know if there is any more content after the shelter.

Good game anyway!

Good art! It really set up the mood.

But the game is really hard, I couldn't find enough material for a shelter before I die.

Nice work!

Oh cool, a survival game! An unforgiving one, too! Perhaps even a bit too unforgiving? I wasn't able to even once collect enough wood and stone to build a shelter without dying of thirst first. I'm going to give another try in case I missed something. Overall I had fun playing and there are many details in this game which I find adorable, for example: * Waves washing the shores of the islands. * Rain that puts out the fire. * Health, temperature, thirst and hunger icons instead of numerical stats.

Very cool entry, everything works well together - the only thing I wish for would be a more precise UI for everything you have to keep track of. There seems to be only 4 UI-Images for every indicator (water, food, day/night, temperature) while the actual value has like 20 Turns until it kills you. Sometimes I would run past a puddle and two steps later I am already 1/2 dehydrated and then have to go back to drink. Also I didn't quite understand when puddles fill up at rain.

Overall I had quite some fun with this entry, really digging the artstyle and mood. ^^

Really cool game. I haven't seen many survival games so far, but it fits the theme very well. I think the difficulty was good and made the player's inevitable death all the more frequent. Definitely enjoyed my time playing it. Also want to add that its crazy you made your own game engine, Great job!

wogabi 2022-04-04 21:07

Really cool game, good job! I wasn't able to find enough wood and rocks so I died in the rain. Very difficult but maybe there was a strategy I missed. I liked it though.

Good survival game and too hard for me. The UI is pretty unintuitive and, since I can't read, I didn't realize the game was turn based at first, because movement speed didn't hint at it. It would be better if the make action was bound to e.g. X instead of using Z for everything.

glaikunt 2022-04-06 14:20

Great little game! I ran out of drinking water & food. I couldn't figure out how to build a shelter, was trying to figure out how to chop down the tree's but sadly failed. The art & gameplay fit together really well. Good job!

lisyarus 2022-04-06 16:19

Very nice game! Movement is probably a bit too fast, a small delay between moves would be perfect. I tried several times and still couldn't survive, I ran out of puddles and died from thirst. Not sure if this is intended (after all, this is inevitable?) or bad game balance or I just wasn't performing that good :) Anyways, lovely game, enjoyed it, would definitely play something like this for a long time if it had more content!

roryh 2022-04-06 20:50

@lisyarus @glaikunt @alaah @wogabi thanks for the feedback on that! Yeah, I had rigged the math so that the player could only reasonably survive about 6-12 days before inevitably dying of thirst. I messed up on the presentation of that though. There's really nothing to make that clear to the player, so it just ended up feeling unfair or like something the player was missing. There isn't anything ye missed, death from dehydration is inevitable in this game! (if I did it right)

The shelter was there as a bonus challenge to strive for, plus it gave the illusion of more content than there really was :p

Interesting idea for a survival game! The pixel art is nice.

bastienre4 2022-04-06 21:13

Nice entry, I loved the graphics!

yetanother 2022-04-06 23:52

Nice pixel art and compelling gameplay, I really tried to make the shelter but died too soon :-/

daniel-username 2022-04-07 00:22

Really solid! Love the art and vibe.

jovialknoll 2022-04-07 04:19

Lovely art style, I like the restrictions you imposed. Sound effects felt fitting. Gameplay felt a bit sparse, but the main components are there.

ubershmekel 2022-04-07 04:41

I made a shelter! Woohoo! There was something really satisfying about this game. Fetching the wood, finding water, making a fire. It all just played out well. The controls were strange but so responsive that it felt effortless. I wish I had something to show for it, like a score or something. I wish I could make a boat and explore the world. That's compo, make just enough to make me curious. And I'm curious. Thank you for the game.

ayosetrujillo 2022-04-07 14:08

Great game!! feels and vibes like real-retro games similar to I ran in my Amstrad CPC. The pixel art is very nice.

Congrats!!

thetatautau 2022-04-09 20:24

Turn based old school RPGs are a rare sight in jams. And this one is very nice, especially the interactions with the environment (rain/cold/heat etc.).

Althought the game stopped working before I was able to build the shelter (HTML5). At least that way I didn't die

Good job!

lesinvisible 2022-04-15 17:38

Very nice and solid game, I liked the gameplay mechanics and overal visual style. Also, it was so nice to see these old school menues operated with comfortable hotkeys.

josh-bothun 2022-04-20 16:19

I loved this game! The graphics are nice and consistent, its well designed and balanced. Its really challenging but not too frustrating.

My only point of small feedback is that the fruit on the trees was a bit too hard to see at first, you might want to make it stand out more either color or size wise.

Really nice job!
