I liked your take on the theme. The artwork is pretty well done too. Only Issue I had with the game is the smoke effect when moving gave me a bit of motion sickness. I think its the disconnect between the speed of the player and the speed of the smoke. Regardless it is fun to play. Reminded me of some retro games

mrnyarlathotep 2017-08-01 13:26

@hephyrius - its difficult conveying a sense of speed without environmental cues, so I was trying to use some nebula type elements (the smoke) as a foreground element to counterpoint the slow movement of the stars background and make the ships feel like they were moving fast - sorry it didn't work for you

nikrt 2017-08-01 13:55

The controls are a little difficult to get used to. Plus movement of the ship is difficult to spot unless you observe the environment. Also, the bullets get fired in random direction if the ship catches speed. Other than that, the graphics are nice for the kind of theme you went for. Overall, good one.

Mmm, web only? Unity WebGL is hella sluggish, but I could run it.

At first I was confused, because no enemies were spawning. Then I got swarmed, lel.

It's a nice shooter with good gfx and multiple options to spend energy. If I had to complain about something, it would be lack of timer/scoring. And I understand the lack of soundscape, but you should've at least made a shooting sound; it's 5 minutes in bfxr. Good job in overall.

jotson 2017-08-01 15:27

Pretty cool concept (I love spaceship games like this). Controls were a little difficult though and I had no idea what the fuel scoop system was.

mathijs750 2017-08-01 15:34

Interesting mechanic, it adds quite a bit of replay-ability. The flying works with a gamepad but feels a bit more clunky than the keyboard. Getting too ambitious is something I can relate to, so I understand the lack of audio.

blackquiltro 2017-08-01 15:36

Good theme usage. I liked the explosion effects and overall graphics. Ship movement could have been a bit faster (turning speed mostly). And remember: there is no sound in space! :)

Great particle effects! Nice game!

mrnyarlathotep 2017-08-02 11:21

@nikrt & @jotson - I was trying to evoke asteroids drifty, low friction controls. The Fuel Scoop lets you pick up energy (blue cubes) that sometimes enemies drop and that sometimes you can mine from asteroids - if its not turned on you just fly past them.

@starlight-glimmer-is-best-poney - I make all my LD games web only, because realistically a lot of people are going to play them for less time than it takes to download / unzip / install / uninstall / delete, plus I get Mac & Linux dudes for free

*edit*: FWIW, Unity WebGL performance is usually pretty good in Firefox, if you're using Chrome I highly recommend turning WebGL 2.0 on if you haven't already

@mathijs750 - thanks for letting me know about the gamepad! I don't have one handy to test myself, but if its as easy to support as it seems I'll probably support it a bit better in future

I was actually going to complain that I couldn't actually pickup the mysterious blue glowing orbs but then I realized how the fuel scoop worked. I think I prefer it this way. I hate wasting drops because I'm already at full energy. Other than that, I'll just echo what others have said. Sound can really add a lot to a game, a few minutes in bfxr would of made a big difference. Competing in compo makes it especially hard to find the time for everything though, so things getting axed last minute happens. A possible bug I ran into: sometimes my ship would continuously shoot despite my not touching the shoot button. It was a bug a didn't much mind having happen during fights though, saved me some button spamming. Overall it's a nice game that fit the theme quite well and I enjoyed it.

This is a really good entry. I like the way you've incorporated the toggles for the different abilities and how you have to balance power usage carefully. At first I had a hard time finding any enemies, then I turned on the scanner. I found a few right away, but very quickly got swarmed. When the tougher enemies spawned that made it almost impossible to get ahead after that. At one point I think I had 20 or so of the harder enemies on top of me. It might help to adjust the spawn rate a bit. There is no score or timer so it's hard to tell how well I'm doing, and hard to judge improvement from game to game. I really liked the lighting effects when destroying an enemy. It would be nice if the explosion wasn't contained in a square, to make it look more natural. The ship movement was a little bit forced. It's space, remember, so no gravity or friction to slow you down. As you've seen, my entry is very similar. It's amazing how many similar ideas we had independently. I intend to add several similar features to my game that you've done here. They've been on my roadmap for a while though. Great minds think alike! Thanks for the great entry. Add some sound and keep going with the development.

Turning was extremely slow, so shooting at enemies was kinda difficult; didn't survive very long. Not very innovative but otherwise solid game.

novotmike 2017-08-03 10:20

The concept of this game is very similar to what I've done. It is a great take on the theme! For me it was quite fun to play - only thing I miss is music and sound effects. The graphics is really nice, I like the explosion effect particularly. As for the gameplay itself controlls for me were a bit hard to master - the ship was turning slowly and the whole steering did not feel right. But I might just be nitpicking. Overall great work! I really like this game :)

zchen 2017-08-05 05:23

The game looks great! From the menu screen to the assets in game, well done with that. My immediate feeling was that there was a lack of purpose in the game.

I'm not really sure what I should be doing. After playing it for awhile I guess it's to survive as long as possible. I think the game would benefit from a 'score' screen at the end of each play through to give a sense of achievement and also a goal for the next play through, e.g. "I survived for 30 seconds! Maybe I can survive longer if I used a different strategy."

Keep up the good work!

mik3 2017-08-05 08:20

I think the ship should rotate to face the mouse because using arrows to turn was kind of tedious. The movement was also pretty slidy and hard to control, this was maybe on purpose, but I personally don't prefer it in this kind of game. The idea of having ship systems which can be turned on and off to managed energy was pretty nice and I liked the graphics as well.

oparisy 2017-08-05 10:22

It's fun and appropriate you used the classic Asteroids controls. Would have liked a small graphics/animation for the thrusters. Nice graphics.

n-feofentov 2017-08-05 10:56

Nice game. Have to get used to controls. First I tried it on gamepad: without subsystems buttons it's impossible to stay for a long time. I don't quite understand how fuel scoop works.

Good luck!

mrnyarlathotep 2017-08-06 15:04

@n-feofentov - yeah, I wasn't actively trying to support gamepads because I honestly didn't think most people would be playing LD entires with gamepads, but it was easy enough that I might put actual gamepad support in for future entries
