LD39 — Running out of Power

eDrive by TimBeaudet 2017-07-31T20:19:53Z

Nice job. Clean graphics, no glitches. There was no instruction on how to play, but it ended up being very intuitive, so bonus for that. The music was a nice touch if just a bit repetitive. The sounds were appropriate and made me feel like it was charging up the car. Simple concept with a good execution. Thanks for the entry!

Betty Botz by recursor 2017-08-01T01:53:40Z

This is an amazing effort. Really quite fun. Very creative and innovative approach. I suck at it but I had fun driving the bots around bumping things around. I really like the concept of score based off of how much power is left at each level. I did have a few issues getting cargo back upright once it falls over, so maybe there is a restart level option I missed or something. Anyway, very very fun game. I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for sharing.

Betty Botz by recursor 2017-08-01T06:44:30Z

@recursor Make sure you play and rate other games, mate. That is what will get people to find and rate your game. This game is way too cool to leave un-rated. I would hate to see you go through all the effort of building this great game and then not get any feedback on it. Cheers.

Pipe Trek by quill18 2017-07-31T21:44:19Z

Watched the beginning of the stream and had to force myself to turn it off to focus on my own game. Great blending of the theme and a classic game and genre. Really my only issue was the 3 second long repetitive audio loop playing the whole time. I would have liked an option to disable the music. I think it might be helpful to have the various power connections a little more prominently labeled as I had a hard time finding which one was which, resulting in me just randomly trying to reconnect whichever one my mouse was closest too when we got hit. I really enjoyed the LCARS interface and how it ties into the theme. Overall a great submission, although I think I liked Tub of War a bit more. =) Thanks for all the inspiration, and encouragement on your channels.

Galvanica by icxon 2017-08-04T22:39:50Z

This is a fun game. The graphics are perfect for this kind of game. I enjoyed the humor and the style. Thanks for the submission. I hope you keep working on this and make some additional content for the game. Cheers.

Flip The Switch by madalaski 2017-07-31T16:51:53Z

Interesting concept. As others have said already, the font is very hard to read. The instructions weren't very clear and there was either an error or I misunderstood the humor (it says that it has been collecting power for "{Error Data Unknown} years") and the instructions say you need 10,000 power but the game interface only shows 3,000 max. Placing blocks was confusing. I would click a block and try to place it, and sometimes it jsut won't register and I had to click on the block type again to get it to go. Trying to make connections was very confusing. Rather than having all the pathing lines, it might be better to just make them direct lines from the edge of one block to the edge of the other. I felt like the cockroaches came out too fast, and they were too quick to destroy your components. I suppose with practice that might improve. Overall, not a bad entry. Has some good potential, just needs more time to tweak it.

VoltRush by Reiv 2017-08-07T16:25:42Z

Nice little jumper. Just hard enough to be a challenge, but not so hard as to make it frustrating. Took about half a dozen attempts to make it to the end. I hope you continue to make content for the game and add more levels. It is a good game and deserves more content. Thanks very much for the entry.

Recapitate by superpokeunicorn 2017-08-03T23:40:20Z

I enjoyed playing this game. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it but it worked out pretty good. The blood drains away at a pretty fast rate, even on the default difficulty at least in my opinion. The graphics were solid and maintained a consistent theme. The music was a nice touch, just a bit loud in comparison to the other sounds. I feel that background music should be more subtle; again, just my opinion. All in all a solid entry and a fun game. I'm less of a fan of the java games because of the extra work necessary to launch them. I would like to see a web client if that becomes possible moving forward. Thank you for sharing!

Robo Power by jahndis 2017-08-02T07:54:56Z

Very innovative approach to the theme. Fun puzzle game, and humor to boot. Took a second to figure out that I had to drag the commands to the queue, but then it made sense. On my screen, the commands overlapped the "Available Commands" text, but I still got the idea. I like the puzzle idea that didn't seem like it was a clone of most other puzzle games. Thank you for the game and entry. Well done, and congratulations!

Gastric Hell by dwemthy 2017-08-04T09:34:00Z

Very good music, and a completely different theme/feeling to the game. The power mechanic didn't seem to be too important. I ended up with way more power (candle?) than I started with. I did have several tooth monsters following me around though. Unlike any other games I've seen this LD. Well done, entertaining, and unique, if not just a little short. I agree with what others have said about the speed of the initial screens. I had to play it two or three times to read the whole thing. When I finally reached the end, I wasn't sure if that was the end or if it was loading another level or waiting for me to do something. Anyway, thanks very much for the game. It was cool.

Island trouble by PiotrJ 2017-07-31T22:48:56Z

Interesting concept, I liked the art and graphic style, but ultimately, I didn't understand the point of the game. I just made a bunch of research facilities, a ton of solar panels, and poles to connect everything and let it run until it told me I won. I would like to see more details about the objective, and some way to limit the amount of spamming of solar panels so there is some reason to use coal. Thank you for the entry, and good luck with the game.

Robo Runner by mrwillowb 2017-07-31T21:13:04Z

Good graphics, sound is appropriate, but the game doesn't actually work right for me. Downloaded and ran the game, click start, the robot starts walking and picks up a battery or two, but it doesn't recharge him. Eventually I run out of power and the game ends. When I click start again though, I've still got the money I accumulated from the previous run. I end up with enough money to buy a few upgrades and I bought 7 speed upgrades without paying attention. Now the robot runs out of power in about 3/4 of a second. I can't get anywhere, restarting the game didn't help, so I deleted the game directory and unzipped it again. I have to assume the settings are stored in the registry somewhere because the game still has all of the settings from the old install. (Sure enough, there is an entry in my registry for the game - that's a little disturbing). Graphics are nice, but ultimately the game doesn't work. Maybe you can fix it later. Thanks for the game.

Gem Diver by Yirggzmb 2017-08-18T07:13:44Z

As promised, I have played and rated Gem Diver. I can't think of much to say that hasn't already been pointed out. M-1 made a really great review that accurately captures almost all of my comments for the game. I did manage to finish the game (played story mode) though so it's nice to see that your game has an intro, instructions, and a functional win condition. Well done. Thank you very much for the opportunity to play your game.

Slinger - Last jump to infinity. by roycocup 2017-07-31T16:27:25Z

Good concept. A step away from the common crop of ideas. Suggestions: add the option to press a button (space bar or something) to cancel the current attempt and restart the round. There are several times where you shoot and clearly aren't going to make it but you end up having to wait for the ship to slow down and stop before you can restart. Thanks for the entry.

Truckfighter by pingFromHeaven 2017-08-01T01:17:45Z

I really enjoyed what I could play of the game. I am a reverse Y-axis player though so the lack of option to swap the y-axis makes the game largely unplayable for me. I get a headache very quickly when trying to play games without it. What I saw though was very nice. The graphics were really creative, the game concept was good. I agree with @sgt3v that the fire rate needs a SLIGHT boost, although that might not matter if I could toggle the y-axis, since I missed several key shots. Nice game, nice submission.

Out of Power by Piotrek 2017-07-31T18:02:19Z

Great graphics, very crisp, nice style. The static noise while running out of power is very loud and annoying, could be toned down just a bit. Movement is a little disjointed, feels off, like the momentum value is too high. There were several times when I couldn't get jumping to work smoothly and other times when I could jump 6 or 7 times in a row launching me into orbit.

Defend Home: Mars by sgt3v 2017-08-02T03:10:02Z

Nice job for a quick development game. I have a hard time playing games without inverted y-axis so I couldn't play for very long. Smooth gameplay though, although there was some lag during loading and when more ants spawned. Thanks for the game!

Spacy adventure by egordorichev 2017-08-06T19:27:33Z

Great game. I wanted to make my game in pico-8 this compo, but I didn't feel like I had enough skill yet to pull it off. It's really nice to see how well you've done with this. The feedback I would provide is that the overall pace of the game is just a little fast. Enemy ships seem to move too fast, and the player ship is just a touch too slow to avoid the enemy shots. Which leads me to the second point. The streaking stars, intended to give a sense of movement, are far too distracting. I end up spending too much time trying to dodge them because my brain senses the movement and tries to escape it.

The graphics are awesome. The sound is good, considering the pico-8 sound editor isn't the grandest thing. The game is quite fun, but could be tweaked to make it even more fun.

Thank you for the awesome entry.

Rocket Rescue by automatonvx 2017-08-17T00:55:08Z

Music was a great touch. (I ran out of time and didn't get music into my game.) I only played the LD version, since that is the one I wanted to rate. I'll play the Post Jam version in a while. In the meantime, this was a good entry. I like the use of power, sticking to the theme. The jet pack felt just a little slow to kick in, but I'm sure I'd get used to it over time. Overall, a pretty good entry. Thank you for the submission.

Leonardo Montes' DUNKIRK by Repusv 2017-08-01T01:39:13Z

Nicely made game. A few things. First of all, the enemy planes all weave back and forth constantly which isn't very realistic and it makes it really hard to shoot them down. Just the fighters though, not the bombers. Secondly, Trend Micro flagged it and deleted it as a threat, although it seems like that is a well known issue with something related to the core file. (flags the threat as HEU_AEGISCS219 - google that for more info). The keyboard controls are all but useless, so pretty much requires a controller. Graphics are basic but well done. Flight controls are a bit wonky but not too terrible. Not sure what it has to do with the theme, however. All in all, a good effort. Thank you for the game.

PowrConnectr by JOrbits 2017-08-03T23:28:42Z

This is very well done. Integrating the tutorial into game play was great. I just kept playing and didn't realize I wasn't being guided any more. The puzzles are fun and more challenging as the game progresses. I enjoyed this one quite a lot. The music was a little monotonous as time wen on, but having music is better than many. Thank you for the game.

Pathjumper by mrnyarlathotep 2017-08-02T14:32:28Z

This is a really good entry. I like the way you've incorporated the toggles for the different abilities and how you have to balance power usage carefully. At first I had a hard time finding any enemies, then I turned on the scanner. I found a few right away, but very quickly got swarmed. When the tougher enemies spawned that made it almost impossible to get ahead after that. At one point I think I had 20 or so of the harder enemies on top of me. It might help to adjust the spawn rate a bit. There is no score or timer so it's hard to tell how well I'm doing, and hard to judge improvement from game to game. I really liked the lighting effects when destroying an enemy. It would be nice if the explosion wasn't contained in a square, to make it look more natural. The ship movement was a little bit forced. It's space, remember, so no gravity or friction to slow you down. As you've seen, my entry is very similar. It's amazing how many similar ideas we had independently. I intend to add several similar features to my game that you've done here. They've been on my roadmap for a while though. Great minds think alike! Thanks for the great entry. Add some sound and keep going with the development.

ABANDON SHIP by attrition 2017-08-05T23:32:31Z

This is a well done game. The music had a very thematic feeling to it, and the sounds were all acceptable for the game. Finding your way around to pick up the crew was interesting and added some tension. On more than one occasion I made the wrong choice and paid for it. Subsequent attempts at the level proved more successful. I agree with a lot of what has been said about the collisions. There were several times where I was getting stuck on walls when my brain said I should be. I think this is related to the player hit box being a square due to the top down projection, but all of the models imply an iso projection. I bonked my head on walls more often than I felt like I should have. This is something you'd eventually learn after playing for a longer period of time, and isn't a deal breaker. One thing I didn't like was the "space" to pick up a crew member. I feel like it would be a better mechanic to automatically pick up any crew member you walk over, but give the player the ability to hit space to drop them. As has been said above, that would give a more strategic feeling to the game, by staging crew members as you see fit before rescuing them. You could compound that mechanic by having each crew member also have some level of injury to make prioritizing them important. I enjoyed the game though, and you did a great job on the "complete" game experience. Thanks for the submission!

Power Plant Assault by Demonac 2017-08-08T05:30:23Z

Watched your game video on YouTube. This turned out to be a really nifty game idea. I'm not willing to run unsigned random VBA script on my computer, but I enjoyed watching you play. This is something you could (and should) spend the time to convert into a game using a more standard framework (Unity, Godot, Clickteam Fusion, etc). I am very impressed with how well it turned out. I voted on the game for you, although I can't actually play it. My game is https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/roop-running-out-of-power/, if you were so inclined to check it out. Thanks for the game (video). =)

POWER BEAT RACER by Hels 2017-08-02T05:21:10Z

Nice entry. As others have mentioned, having to memorize the colors was a little frustrating (made harder by the fact that I couldn't see the colors/buttons the first few times because the instructions were scrolled off the screen), and the timing on a few of the notes was pretty tough. A solid offering though, and I liked it. Thank you for the game.

Thermal Power Plant K-13 by Finlal 2017-08-04T20:53:13Z

This is a very amazing game, but I've found a problem early in where you can run out of the resources necessary to explore the outlying posts preventing you from obtaining the resources necessary to continue. What I was able to play though was fantastic. The music was perfect. The graphics are beautiful. The gameplay seems complex enough to be challenging, but easy enough to pick up quickly. I appreciate that you made a WebGL version, saving me the hassle of having to install the game. Thank you for the game, and congratulations on a well done game.

Micro Mayhem by Doccrazy 2017-07-31T20:48:00Z

Fun racing game, appropriately "race game" themed audio track. Controls were a bit sensitive, and the camera felt a bit slow to track the car, but ultimately a great entry. Graphics were acceptable for a 48 hour quick build. Would like to see more detail in the cars, additional tracks, different power ups, etc, in the future. I hope you keep going with it. Thanks for the game.

Power Earth Saver by wwwhizz 2017-08-14T16:21:56Z

This is a really well done entry. The tip to play the game full screen made a big difference in how easy it was to distinguish the background stars and the enemy shots. Music was really well done, sound effects were perfect, controls are great (once you get used to them). This is one of my favorite entries this LD. Thank you for the excellent submission.

Moon Landing by Nick Salesky 2017-07-31T20:28:35Z

Thanks for the game submission. A fun little game. The big yellow dots (stars I assume?) are a bit misleading. It took me a while to realize they weren't obstacles. Maybe if they were just a bit smaller it would be more obvious? I appreciate that it plays in a browser rather than having to download and run an executable, so points for that. All in all, a good entry, especially for being a first time with the new dev tool. I looked at Godot myself, but stuck with something I was a little more comfortable with. Have a great day!

Night of the Living Toaster by WhatFruit 2017-07-31T17:25:41Z

Nice theme overall. The controls are not very useful, having to constantly mash the buttons to move. Given the suspension of logic already because this is an animated toaster, I would have like to be able to move in any direction, not just on certain faces. The rats are a problem. Once they lock on to you, it doesn't seem possible to get away. I had a hard time with it. It seems like the first level should be more of an introduction to the game rather than a huge challenge. Good entry though. Has a very nice feeling.

Powerwatch by Gurbx 2017-08-05T02:21:48Z

Really well done game, lots of polish, good sound effects and game play. The only issue I had was when the mouse ends up outside the game window, it loses focus and you end up bringing other windows to the front. If there was a way to trap the mouse pointer while the game was in play that would be perfect. Very good entry. Professional feel. Thanks for the game.

Constellation Exploration by matfernandestt 2017-08-16T23:44:46Z

Overall a pretty neat game. I agree with many of the other reviewers here that it was a bit challenging in the later levels since you don't get a chance to study the star layout before the round starts. I don't mind the actual difficulty of navigating around to reach the stars, but maybe if you had it hold at the extent of the constellation for a few seconds at the beginning to give the player a chance to figure out where to go. After level 4, it really ended up being pure luck that I found enough stars to keep going. And losing at that point meant going back through the first four levels again. Maybe restart at each level after you've completed the previous one would be good too.

Simple yet effective graphics, easy to learn yet hard to master controls, audio included, this is a great entry. Thanks for the game.

Battery Booster by Garett Cooper 2017-07-31T22:06:12Z

Good game. I agree with @drtizzle that the controls are just right. Not too responsive, not too sluggish. The music was a little repetitive but added a nice touch. I managed to improve my time three games in a row, which means I was getting better at the game. Gives the player something good to try to improve on. Bonus points for a nice menu screen, and all features seem to work right. Got stuck against the wall once and had to shuffle back and forth several times to get out, so maybe an option to recenter on the road at the cost of a time penalty might be a way to go. Overall, nice job, thanks for the game!

ROOP (Running Out Of Power) by Spetsdod 2017-07-31T23:11:51Z

@gistnoesis Can you clarify what problems you were having with the control? The issue I mentioned in the known issues relates (I think) to how thrust is translated from the physics control object to the ship in the HTML5 exporter. At the default setting of 25, which plays perfectly fine in the game dev tool, the ship goes from stopped to "light speed" in the web client. Basically you are going so fast you have no hope of controlling the ship. I had to drop the thrust impulse down to 2.5 for the web build just to get a similar feeling from the controls. Now, in the web client, there is some skill required to maneuver the ship, so maybe it would just take a little practice, but if there is an actual issue, I'd like to know about it. As for the edge warping, I left that in as part of the mechanic to give the player a bit of an edge over the ships. It can play against you though if you're not careful. Ultimately, one of the things I want to address moving forward is make the ships have some momentum and force them to have to turn normally instead of just instantly popping to face the player. That will change the edge warp dynamic a bit. I'm already working on the evolution of the game, and will post it up somewhere when I start tweaking things to my liking. Thank you for the feedback.

ROOP (Running Out Of Power) by Spetsdod 2017-08-06T19:12:07Z

@antaresvaldemar Thank you for the comments. As you see from the demo I recorded, the key to surviving longer is to use small controlled thrusts to move around. Part of the dynamic intended is weighing the risk vs reward of chasing down energy pods. Sometimes it's not worth it to chase after them because you end up using more energy than you can recoup. As for the post-jam version of the game, the addition of the blue pods which return 200 energy makes it much easier to survive for longer periods of time. To offset that, the enemy ships increase speed slowly over time. You did witness one of the known bugs of the game, specifically the bad enemy spawns that sometimes happen right on top of you that you can't avoid. That has been fixed in the post-jam version, finally. One of the next "fixes" I am hoping to make is to change the enemy ships so they have to turn to chase the player, not just instantly snap to face you. That will make it much more realistic, I think. Also, I may try to add in a feature that allows you to press a button to "tractor beam" all pods with in a certain distance straight too you. This would be another risk/reward mechanic, as using the tractor beam would cost energy, but could potentially capture several pods at once that you might have otherwise missed.

Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the game.

ROOP (Running Out Of Power) by Spetsdod 2017-08-08T17:53:48Z

@cttfow What part of the controls was difficult for you? Could you elaborate? I know that being the developer makes a lot of difference when playing the game, but I feel like the controls are pretty simple and comparable to a game like Asteroids, which this game takes some of it's inspiration from. Thrust takes time to build up, and inertia allows you to move around without using power. I've heard from a few folks about the control issues, but no one has yet elaborated on those issues. Thank you very much for the review.

ROOP (Running Out Of Power) by Spetsdod 2017-08-18T14:56:57Z

@tim-eriksen That is an acceptable strategy, but by no means is it the best strategy. If you stay in the center of the screen, you miss out on the energy pods which limits the total length of your game. Also, in the LD version of the game there is a bug where the enemy ships can spawn anywhere, including right on top of you, resulting in unavoidable collisions. I fixed that in the Post LD version of the game, plus I added in larger energy pods, giving the player an incentive to move around. Glad you enjoyed the game though. =)

Project Sunspot by AntaresValdemar 2017-08-04T02:23:12Z

Thank you for making this game playable in the browser. My patience was low for games that had to be downloaded, unrar'd, unzip, unpacked, then run from command line (java vm, etc). I really enjoyed the quality of the game. With so many games, mine included, being retro-style pixel graphics, the crisp lines and high resolution of your game was welcome. I enjoyed figuring out some of the puzzles, although I admit I didn't make it very far. The concept was very nice, and the theme fit very well. I hope you keep going with the game and finish it up, as it seems clear there is more story to be had. Thank you for the very good game.

Jeff Long Run by Matoux42 2017-08-02T05:47:13Z

Nice game, although the speed is quite off making it very hard to complete the levels. Several of the jumps are so narrowly spaced that completing the level is very challenging. Still a good game, with a very high skill level required. Thank you for the offering.

PLUG ME ! by Ramou 2017-08-04T00:08:27Z

Nice job. Took a few tries to figure it out, but made it eventually. Would be nice to see some randomization of the map so it isn't the same thing over and over. Music was appropriate and added flavor to the game. Graphics are decent and it played very smoothly. The loading time though... MAN... Game should have a restart button too so you don't have to quit and launch it again to play. All in all, pretty fun. Thanks for the game.

Fat Jack's Fun Run by kippllo 2017-08-04T19:35:09Z

Thanks for the submission. I managed to finish the game. It was a bit short, but still enjoyable and finished. I agree that the controls get locked out in some cases where you end up stuck on one edge of the map without the ability to get more food to fix it. I wouldn't mind if the camera angle was just a bit higher so you could see over the player model. Cheers!

Oh no! Democracy! by Tim Eriksen 2017-08-16T23:11:16Z

Thank you for the game. This was an interesting take on the theme. I think it was more of a running out of time rather than power but the game was fun none-the-less. It took a little while to understand the cards (number on the card is how much that area of research increases, number in corner is how much unrest it generates). I succeeded on my second try through, which is a testament to how intuitive the game is. Graphics were very well done, although it was a little hard to read the research areas on the rocket. It would be interesting to have some benefit for having a higher score in certain research areas, since you can (and do) end up with more than 10 points in some of them. Maybe you can get your rocket working but then it may or may not get you into space, depending on how much research you have. Anyway, thanks for the game. It was fun and well done.

Mine is up if you want to check it out, just be sure to rate the game based on the LD link THEN go play the evolution version. I've made quite a few improvements.

Cheers!

Deus Lightning Force by Mengane 2017-08-02T20:07:19Z

That was really cool. The graphics are great. I liked the CRT filter; made the game feel like an old school arcade game. My brain kept wanting to use the down arrow key to make Zeus fly downward to stop his hovering, but that just wasted power. If the shoot lightning ability was bound to space bar or a different key, that would fix that, or reduce the hovering up and down just a tad. I agree with @anglain that Zeus moves around just a little to fast but I suppose you'd get used to that. Overall a really good entry. Simple, fun, well done. Thanks for the game.

The Truth by Jolix 2017-07-31T23:01:25Z

Great graphics, very true secret. Would play again. You could leverage this into a fun game pretty easily if you were wiling to spend the time. Thank you for the fun and laughs.

Scale of Life by ilya_kozlov 2017-08-11T15:48:30Z

Pretty graphics, the sounds are cute and fit the game very well. Game doesn't seem to match the LD39 theme in any way, though. There is a lot of crackling and clicking in the sound though. Same bugs others have mentioned. I was confused with the expansion, as there doesn't seem to be a clear indication of the edge of the planet as it grows. It would be useful to have a defined edge. Overall, nice game, good sound, not sure on the theme. Thanks for the submission.

Super Power Frenzy by AlexanderTeaH 2017-08-04T00:39:31Z

Pretty neat game. Hard to play, as you pointed out. Helpful that you offered more than one way to play (mouse/keyboard, and controller). Sound is good, graphics are very thematic (retro!). Overall a pretty decent game. Similar to mine, although nothing alike. Thanks for the game, I enjoyed it.

Power! by Martyxgames 2017-08-04T23:04:49Z

Basic game, but complete. Needs a bit more mechanic to make it entertaining after a while. Thanks for the effort.

There's No Place Like Home by Remzo 2017-08-05T23:46:56Z

Visually a very interesting game. I liked the graphic style. I felt like it was a bit hard to get the plug into the sockets from time to time, and for me, trying to switch the plug between the ship and the shield was not an option. The power cell drained too fast so trying to switch it from one to the other would have been tough. Overall, a good submission for LD. I would be interested to see where you take it from here. I never managed to get the ship charged, so I don't know if there are more levels later, or if this marks the whole game. Thank you for the game, all the same.

Soul Gun by EX3 2017-08-06T04:35:28Z

Thank you for the very interesting game, guys. I played through for quite a while, but much like @wan above, I gave up at the point he posted because the purple guy shoots too often, making it really hard to time switching gravity to fall, the get up to the right spot to try to shoot him then toggle back and forth in order to make it into the next hall way. Still, an interesting concept and a nifty game. I would have preferred to see the shooting and the gravity flipping on separate buttons, but this is your game not mine. I liked the music and the way you reversed it to make a more eerie sound. Hopefully you don't stop and keep improving the game. Thanks again!
