I would love to play it, but I keep getting errors when I try to download it. Looks pretty cool though!

lukethecoder64 2017-07-31 20:24

Well done! Figuring out how to place the buildings in the best way was really fun. One thing to improve upon would be the graphics. Great job!

vizitas 2017-07-31 20:32

Awesome gameplay, reminds me of factorio. Just wish there was some sort of resource that would prevent me from spamming solar panels like this rev.PNG

michael-feldman 2017-07-31 20:32

The color palette is nice, and even though most of the graphics are comprised of basic shapes, what I really like is the look of a productive island. Something about having everything wired up and powered is very satisfying. Makes me feel like I built something, like a well oiled machine that is working on its own. Anyway cheers and best of luck!

pixelgriffin 2017-07-31 20:34

Interesting concept, I was really excited by the screenshots to see how this would play!

Unfortunately I didn't really get what I was doing.. I knew I had to research something so I built a ton of research labs and slapped solar panels everywhere. This worked fine and since the game said to beware of coal I figured screw it I'll not use it at all.

At about 50% solar efficiency I guess I won the game some how? I thought I was trying to hit 100% solar efficiency but apparently not?

The game seems really cool, but I would recommend making a clearer end goal, and adding more limitations to the player, such as a cost to build and a currency generator (perhaps factories that draw a lot of power necessitating the use of coal?).

The conveyor belts were cool, had a very Factorio feel to it which I loved. I suspect this is what you were going for? :)

I would love to see this further developed in the future though, I love these kinds of building/resource games!

I like the idea of this, but I'm not sure if it's quite done here. Unless something bugged out (possible, see below), I didn't see any kind of budget to control building thing. As such, coal turned out to be less efficient (due to waiting on conveyor belt deliver) than just building massive solar farms. I was able to power through is a short time with, seemingly, no pushback from the systems.

Also, the game told me I had researched everything when I was still @ 40%, so might be a bit of a bug there.

Kudos on actually having a functional tutorial in a LD game

antti-haavikko 2017-07-31 20:45

Pretty cool little sim. And it said that I even won and unlocked all the things (even though it is still researching better panels). Okay, I think it now reached 40% efficient panels and stopped researching.

Not much to do in it really. Just plot down few buildings in the beginning and then just watch the numbers go up. Well I guess one could go the other way around, abuse coal mining which then would result in more greenhouse gasses and sea level rising? Some people just want to see the world burn...

jbasinger 2017-07-31 20:58

Having trouble running this from my mac. Error: Could not find or load main class ld39-island-trouble.jar

antti-haavikko 2017-07-31 21:06

@jbasinger The html5 version worked fine for me.

piotrj 2017-07-31 21:09

Thanks for the comments! Sadly due to time constraints stuff is fairly barebones. Ive planed to use energy as currency for building stuff, didnt quite make it. Buildings have placeholder prices in code.

40% is indeed the final research, which is roughly best research panels that exist today.

Ive tested the jars only on windows, your best bet is to run the web version. It should work on a mac, i think

roka-josh 2017-07-31 22:08

Like some others, had trouble running it, but eventually it just worked, very nice game and a really good concept. Sticks to the theme and is really fun to play. Well done, good job and best of luck!

quantumpotato 2017-07-31 22:09

Looks Factorio inspired, cool. Interesting concepts and some potential here. Confirms it does work on mac.

spetsdod 2017-07-31 22:48

Interesting concept, I liked the art and graphic style, but ultimately, I didn't understand the point of the game. I just made a bunch of research facilities, a ton of solar panels, and poles to connect everything and let it run until it told me I won. I would like to see more details about the objective, and some way to limit the amount of spamming of solar panels so there is some reason to use coal. Thank you for the entry, and good luck with the game.

lazzor 2017-07-31 23:08

Nice game, I liked it and I won, haha! For some reason I couldn't demolish buildings or conveyor belts but the rest worked fine without that!

doug-graham 2017-08-01 03:57

I like the idea. Sort of Factorio meets CreeperWorld. Always nice to see other LibGDX games in LD. Most people have already commented on what I would say, mostly no economy so I just had a base of solar panels and research.

kthulhu1947 2017-08-01 13:44

I like this kind of game. Half Civilization, half simCity, half... I don't know too much half. Very good though. Keep moving forward.

taffaz 2017-08-01 18:21

Good effort, really liked the graphics for the terrain. Checked out your source code since I also used LibGDX and yours was much cleaner than mine. My code was an absolute mess :)

thecodefactory 2017-08-01 23:28

Nice graphics. I like the idea too! Did you use Phaser?

sogomn 2017-08-02 10:02

I agree with the others, the lack of a resource makes it kinda easy. But it's a great idea!

theflyingkeyboard 2017-08-02 10:45

Really nice idea, but needs more polishing: no resources makes this game super easy(just spam solar panels). Graphics are simple, but fun(reminds me some of the retro games) and actually fit the game perfectly. Sound effects, even the most basic ones would definitelly make this game more enjoyable and create better mood.

thuvareyn 2017-08-02 11:43

It make me think about factorio but just with energy. Some mecanism needs to be fixed, you can use only solar panel

mrnyarlathotep 2017-08-02 11:47

I love LD entries that are a bit meatier than a 2d platform game, but as others have said optimal strategy being to ignore coal entirely from the very start removed most of the challenge, which reading your comments is just a side effect of Compo entries being really tight on time, so thats pretty unfortunate.

daanvanyperen 2017-08-02 12:42

Love builder games like this! The design for coal is really nifty. Sucks that you lacked the time to get the cost mechanic in, are you considering making a post compo version?

gonutz 2017-08-02 20:35

I have to say, this is not my type of game, maybe if the UI was a little nicer, the text everywhere and the pixelly graphics do not really look all that great. Then I am sure you spent your time on programming the game play which is good, don't get me wrong, I know the compromises for a 48 hour game. In fact, this time I made the opposite decision and went all in with the graphics but have only little gameplay.

Still at least a little nicer graphics and some sound effects would have been nice.

Other than that I cannot really say much about the gameplay because I quit very fast because I find it too complicated. I will not rate you bad for this, I think that would not be fair, so I will leave it at this comment and not rate your game.

Anyways, keep up the good work, see you around the next time :-)

piotrj 2017-08-07 13:32

Thanks for the feedback! Seems that overall balance is the main sticking point, besides the obvious... Hopefully ill budget my time a little better next time!

vkmicro 2017-08-07 21:34

**First of all:** Thank you for your feedback and for checking out my game. Appreciate it!

**Overall game impression:** This is basically "Factorio" simplified! hahahah xD Factorio Lite. It's an incredibly complicated game for a LD entry game. 2nd resource management strategy game I played and definitely enjoyed it. It's really nice and unique, very cool and fun to play. I really love resource management building strategy games. Conveyor belts are a cool touch :D. Incredible entry, incredible gameplay, incredible complexity! Love it!!! Good job!!!!

**Suggestions and comments on improvement:** I would love some mechanical factory sound effects when you place down conveyor belts and the coal mining, power plants and research facilities.
