Video gaming, the final frontier. These are the Games of the programmer Quill18, Its undefined years mission: To explore strange new games, To seek out new concepts, And fun mechanics

polywolf 2017-07-30 23:00

Great concept, and very well executed! Good job on making a good game.

jekstrom 2017-07-31 04:45

This is really fun. Got up to Admiral on medium difficulty. Immediately died as an Ensign on Blorg difficulty. Life support failed. That's really a failing on the crew, not engineering. I had phasers up the whole time!

2demigods 2017-07-31 13:10

Good game for 24h but could use a better instructions (consider writing what each port does not near them but in the instructions).

gistnoesis 2017-07-31 13:29

Quite confusing graphically even with the instructions (I didn't watch your stream). The "exit" button doesn't seem to work (web version). Once I grasped the concept it seemed interesting but the combat mechanics, as far as I understood, just resume to have all your lights green and fix the torpedo shuffling problems as fast as possible without mis-clicking (played on a trackpad) (it screws you a lot). The audio is very repetitive and adds to the ambient tension installed by the stressful beginning where all lights are off. I enjoyed the star-trek references. Overall OK, but far from your best games.

hephyrius 2017-07-31 14:00

Took me a while to figure out how to play, although once I grasped the concept it was pretty fun! I tuned into the stream for a while and it was pretty good ! One criticism if anything would be to make the enemy ship/attacks more obvious. They are clear, but blind bats like me won't notice them :3

invixel 2017-07-31 15:43

I agree with what @gistnoesis said, there wasen't much strategy involved except just trying to get all the lights grene, and then waiting for a while. But still, considering you only had 14 hours it was quite fun :)

sergey-nelga 2017-07-31 15:53

Awesome reimagining of Pipe Mania. I would've loved to see this given even more time to develop. Difficulty level increase is brutal at the moment.

raogs 2017-07-31 18:24

Nice game, very hard later on and easy to pick up in the beginning.

aterlamia 2017-07-31 18:31

Star trek is always a win for me. The gameplay was amusing enough for some while, i liked when i finally had all systems hooked up so i could see the text. Music was getting on my nerves very quickly though. When i muted all other sounds got muted as wel (of course), so a separate button for music and sound effects would have been great.

sivael 2017-07-31 19:10

*Very* nice! Love how the pipe game has been merged with another layer of gameplay.

hhsaez 2017-07-31 19:10

Great idea and funny to play. There isn't much depth on the gameplay, but it has a lot of potential Nice work!

cynical-monkey 2017-07-31 21:04

i died in about 30 seconds my first go and made it to admiral on the second, just like in the real space navy

jchaplin 2017-07-31 21:07

Very nice & fun game! Great job!

sputnik3d 2017-07-31 21:25

Neat concept, pretty original idea, tying in an established game type and giving it a new twist.

spetsdod 2017-07-31 21:44

Watched the beginning of the stream and had to force myself to turn it off to focus on my own game. Great blending of the theme and a classic game and genre. Really my only issue was the 3 second long repetitive audio loop playing the whole time. I would have liked an option to disable the music. I think it might be helpful to have the various power connections a little more prominently labeled as I had a hard time finding which one was which, resulting in me just randomly trying to reconnect whichever one my mouse was closest too when we got hit. I really enjoyed the LCARS interface and how it ties into the theme. Overall a great submission, although I think I liked Tub of War a bit more. =) Thanks for all the inspiration, and encouragement on your channels.

cambryx 2017-07-31 22:06

Nice game, had a lot of fun playing this!

shaolin-dave 2017-07-31 22:27

Probably the best game I've played for this jam ( other than my own, of course ;-P ). I like it. Fits the theme well, reminds me a lot of "pipe dreams" as far as connection goes, but mechanically is much more unique. I suggest adding an easy way to quit out of the game, ESC button possibly.

holdmeimscared 2017-07-31 22:29

Fun, frantically paced puzzle game. Full points for mood, really well presented. I liked having the text to read while waiting for the next hit to scramble the board again :)

ganbaregameskyle 2017-07-31 22:56

I get that you're supposed to memorize all the different status bars in order to prioritize what you want to fix, but in the heat of the moment I don't have the time to strategize on that level. I end up fixing what's easiest first.

james-dunlap 2017-07-31 23:20

Interesting take on an old classic. I hated how often the hits came and how much it messed up, but I wanted to keep playing!

The music was a bit repetitive as it was a very short loop, but the effects were well done and balanced. I loved the LCARS interface, though! You did an excellent job on creating that. Glad to see that our games are quite different this time as they were quite similar last time...

adroitconceptions 2017-07-31 23:23

Building secondary paths after you have everything powered seems to be a good use of time. Makes repairs faster as there as sometimes the break doesn't break both paths or only breaks one tile of a path.

kunonooni 2017-07-31 23:35

Not a bad game. The difficulty ramps up nicely and the gameplay is smooth. I peeked in on the stream every now and then to see how it was coming along. For not having a lot of time you did a really good job!

jasperarmstrong 2017-08-01 00:35

Very cool game, especially taking the 24 hours you took to make it. I watched you make a lot of it during your stream and had a great time. Very tough to keep up with everything towards the later levels.

swifttech 2017-08-01 01:28

Great Game! Reminds me of when i was younger playing all these pip connecting games, while start trek were on the TV

vija02 2017-08-01 05:39

Nice game! The early part is a bit slow but it gets there

thorneto 2017-08-01 07:29

There is obviously a lot of polish here. The star trek aesthetic was well done despite not being entirely original. One of the better takes on this puzzle that I've seen.

ryzy27 2017-08-01 09:01

Got to admiral XIII with 17 kills on easy. Game got difficult suddenly at end and I couldn't keep up. Nice concept and mechanics. I didn't encounter any bugs.

Also I checked your source code and it looks 100 times better than mine :)

zelos 2017-08-01 17:12

I'm not much into the gameplay nor Star Trek to be honest, but I appreciate the creativity you bring to the 'pipe minigame' genre, if that's a thing.

The graphics are great obviously, except for the text that's rotated by 90%. I had a really hard time remembering what bar stands for what, because you can't see everything at one glance without turning your head.

The sound is serviceable. Not much to say here.

I found the game to be pretty challenging, but still fun to play. I lost pretty quickly every time I played, but as I said - I really don't care much for this genre and I probably suck at it.

Overall great game though. Awesome job.

jake-hyman 2017-08-01 22:17

Quill! I love this game!

The game was a bit confusing to start off with. That was because I skipped the instructions page. (Always do, Nothing personal.)

After I died the first time, I figured out what to do. I Always enjoy your work!

I just submitted my first entry ever.It is called "The Misadventures of Mick and Rorty" I always enjoy watching your videos!(Link Below)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/the-misadventures-of-mick-and-rorty

Thank you!

udo 2017-08-02 00:12

Damn, 14 hours, that's impressive! I enjoyed playing this, although I didn't like the music loop. I loved how the power routing gives the game depth by letting you choose interesting strategies (such as trying to build redundancy). Good job!

lino 2017-08-02 03:05

I think the audio could have easily been made far more interesting. Aside from that the gameplay is solid and I like the aesthetic.

peachtreeoath 2017-08-02 05:25

Thought it was a pretty standard game until I got hit by a torpedo. Creates interesting strategies with planning ahead for being hit.

impbox 2017-08-02 11:50

Pretty fun! I really like Netwalk so I quite liked this. I'm not sure about the moving tiles mechanic. Feels a little OP, but also very awkward. It'd be nice if you could plan more for being attacked. (Can you?) It was fun for a little bit, but got tired quickly. I love the use of the TNG theme on the outer area, but felt it didn't mesh nicely with the style of the tiles in the main play area. Making them all TNG styled would look a lot nicer.

flatgub 2017-08-02 12:36

Incredibly unique take on the theme, I loved it! The gameplay was hard, but fun! My only gripe is that the music being ~5 second loop after a while I wanted to turn it off, but was unable to keep the sound effects which I found crucial. Otherwise a great game though! Well done~

jesper-fyhr-knudsen 2017-08-02 13:42

Life support is overrated! Fun little game you made, I was concentrating too much on the puzzle to read the messages on the right though.

xedithdev 2017-08-02 13:53

Love the game quill! I enjoyed watching you make this! I tuned in every now and then. The game was pretty fun to play and I enjoyed the game!

saucygames 2017-08-02 15:16

Got to rank Captain and 4 kills starting at easy and promoted a difficulty level which was cool. Game initially is fun and challenging. It is also stressful, wish there was a higher reward for keeping the resources connected.

good-enough 2017-08-02 17:12

Agh, I got to admiral V on easy, then it suddenly got very hard, and I was being hit every couple of seconds till my hull was breached. I agree that the puzzle was involving enough that there was no time to look at the log. If, instead of the log, or in addition to it, you had crew members' voices coming over the intercom, it would be a lot more immersive imo.

antiwrapper 2017-08-02 17:26

Very nice idea and pretty good execution. It was a little rough around the edges but still fun to play. Awesome work!

neweichgames 2017-08-02 19:25

Great game mechanics, especially in only 24 hours. Enjoyed playing it.

johngun 2017-08-02 21:36

Like the gameplay a lot, but the music gets a bit monotone after a while. Very nice work, especially in such a short time.

quadtree 2017-08-03 03:56

Good work, very polished and well executed. The only thing I would add would be some new mechanics as the game progresses.

ultrarat 2017-08-03 06:05

How can I redirect power without going to/from/through the deflector dish. The primary start of all technobabble.

novotmike 2017-08-03 12:52

Great little game - for 14 hours it is amazing. I really like the idea and the mechanics of the game. Graphics for me is simple but effective! Nice work!

gimbalock 2017-08-03 14:10

Cool game. Well done in just 14 hours. Nice simple grahpics, great gameplay, funny sounds. The music could be a little more interesting. But in the time spent on this, it's a masterpiece!

recursor 2017-08-03 14:13

I would have liked a way to mute the music as it got quite annoying after the first few seconds. I really like the LCARS look of the game. I think it would have been even better had you created the actual "pipes" to be in the same LCARS style.

jusw85 2017-08-03 15:17

It's a fun entry, and impressive considering it was done in 48hrs. I only got up to Admiral rank with 5 kills on easy. As mentioned, audio becomes repetitive after awhile.

coomzy 2017-08-03 19:22

I think it's good but I personally just found it really frustrating, like I was trying to finish a puzzle and a bully get wiping half of it off the table every min lol

d-studios 2017-08-03 22:10

This game is good. I like the graphical style and how the game looked from UI to the sprites. I also liked the mood of the game and how some sound effects create urgency for the player to hurry and try to finish the puzzles as fast as they can. However, I am not sure how this game really relates to the theme, as the theme was running out of power, but in this game, you are just rerouting power. In conclusion, this game is pretty decent in terms of graphics and mood, but I just wish it was related more to the theme.

andreu 2017-08-04 16:50

I'm not a fan of this kind of game but the StarTrek style got to me :) so full mood points for u sir!

superpokeunicorn 2017-08-05 02:35

This game has an interesting premise of combining a frantic, Pipe Dream style mini game with a strategic management game. Unfortunately, however, those two halves clash with each other more than they work together. I do enjoy the Pipe Dream style mini game and the frantic feeling of having to put everything back together as quickly as possible every time the ship gets hit. This manic, improvisational feeling is the game's strong point. Ironically, it is that frantic pacing that gets in the way of the management aspect. I feel that this game wants me to pay attention to the various systems and prioritize based on the situation. The thing is that I'm having to act so frantically that I don't have time to pay attention to the situation or strategize outside of "get life support connected first and get them all connected as fast as possible." The game has a whole lot of text and bar graphs it expects me to read, but I don't have time because I'm focused solely on repairing all of the systems, even on easy mode. That being said, as a simple Pipe Dream mini game, this is pretty fun. moreover, it's an accomplishment that you were able to put together something as competent as this in 48 hours. Nice work!

ogma 2017-08-05 04:27

\\\//,

I'm just Wow'ed by what you managed to do in so little time.

I love your use of the LCARS visual style, I think it "mixes" well with your game. The others assets are correct. The UI is pretty clean & understandable.

The Pipe Game style is a classic I tend to like and using it as a way to manage the "grid power" of a starship is a nice / fun idea. Interesting take on the theme. Fun concept & good realization. The light scrambling of the pieces is well balanced for the most part. Maybe torpedoes come a little too fast on the Tribble tier, but that may just be me.

The controls are correct but the Drag & Drop felt a bit weird, the first time I tried to move a tile, I thought there was a bug. Other than that, everything responds well.

The music and sounds effects are correct, it goes well with the game.

Implementing three difficulties is a nice move. I barely managed to earn my Admiral rank as a Tribble on my second try, so thanks to think about people as no-skilled as me.^^

Great Job! :)

gelisam 2017-08-05 14:22

Nice twist on the pipedream formula! Getting power to the engine quickly before the enemies fire at us is a much better motivation than having liquid mysteriously start to pour in before the pipe installation is complete.

Mechanically, being able to swap pieces around instead of having to place a predefined sequence of pieces in order is also a big improvement, I feel much more in control of my toolbox, and yet the time pressure means I'm likely to pick a piece from the random ones surrounding my destination, so I'm not over-powered either.

I wish the effects of "shield strength" and "engine trust" was as clear as that of "life support", "hull integrity" and "phaser charge". Putting the shields up didn't seem to protect me against torpedoes, and activating the engines didn't seem to allow me to dodge them.

A suggestion: maybe shooting the enemies should cause them to back off for a bit? This way there would be a risk/reward tradeoff in trying to complete the phasers before the rest, because it would give us more time to fix the rest. As is, the incentive is to always complete phasers last.

My only complaint is that the music was quite repetitive.

sidesplitter 2017-08-05 15:15

Jesus this game is hard. That being said, I am a sucker for Sci-Fi themed games, so I still played it for some time anyway. I think the graphics fit the mood you're going for very well. The music does as well, but does get repetitive after a while. It was a bit hard to figure out where every component of your ship was, and what the exact function was, so there might be some room for improvement in that aspect. But I love how you turned such a simple formula into an interesting game!

ethan-kennerly 2017-08-05 17:42

When I connected power to a couple of stations I felt excited! When I re-read the instructions and saw I could drag, I felt a bit of hope. If you continue to develop this, I would keep playing if I could complete the easy difficulty. I lost in under a minute.

tmpxyz 2017-08-05 18:04

A real professional's work

simonhutchinson 2017-08-05 18:55

Sweet. I love these TNG graphics and how you were able to connect the gameplay to a Star Trek Theme overall. Very smart work.

May the force be with you.

mike-cullingham 2017-08-07 02:44

Great game. Graphics were bang on in making me remember TNG. Really like the way the tiles get jumbled when a torpedo comes in. One of the top games I've played this LD. Excellent work!

elemental-zeal-game-studios 2017-08-07 13:50

Really liked the combination of an older idea, like the tiles with power flowing through them that you can rotate and such, with something new. Well done. :)

feips 2017-08-07 19:54

Beautiful concept and excecution!

jimbly 2017-08-08 03:57

Neat mechanic, and great LCARS! On Hard, I made it to rank Captain, 4 kills.

unit684 2017-08-08 21:17

Nice job, I tried on easy and got bored but the hard mode was a lot more fun. Very nice graphical style and an interesting twist on an old mechanic. The music was decent but got a bit annoying after a while. Overall I really like it :)

martyxgames 2017-08-12 08:17

pipe pipe pipe!!!

simplepotential 2017-08-13 14:33

Really good entry! Maybe it did this and I didn't notice it, but would have been cool if maybe as you get higher in level and take more and more damage you lose pieces of your circuits or they get broken or something like that. Then you have less options. That said it was already pretty challenging so maybe that's not necessary. Really liked it and the LCARS graphics are AWESOME

tayopi 2017-08-18 19:35

Fantastic game! The idea is really well polished and easy to understand.
