LD59 — Signal

cute game, though the controls are a little weird to get used to. normally in games with wall jumping there's some amount of leeway offered to the player in terms of how closely you can press jump and a direction button (and then there's metroid fusion off in the distance with the wild idea that you press the direction button *first*), but here you definitely have to hit jump first which is a bit tricky when there's spikes directly above you. I'm also not convinced that the bounce mechanic is working as intended, I definitely had scenarios where my bounce height ended up being reduced from what I started with for reasons I didn't understand. I think these sorts of things fall under the "forgiveable" category due to the circumstances though, and I did really enjoy the game!

Captured Tides by mechanicallife 2026-04-23T20:57:29Z

probably the best game I've played so far (though there are so many games to rate still). I like the quiet, meditative chillness to it, and I think the game could be taken from good to great if expanded on in the future. I think the two biggest things I noticed are that the sound balance is a little off (the noise of the ship is so loud it drowns out the music and other sound effects) and that there aren't many activities to do on the ship while waiting to arrive at your destination. both of these are totally forgivable given the context, but I do think the game has potential if there was something to fidget with during long sea voyages, perhaps something involving decoding documents or fixing tools you find on the islands. the game has a little bit of jank but I think it all falls into the category of "forgivable jank"

an easy 5 stars for you, friend!

on the subject of rules, I think you could reword the tutorial somewhat to make it feel like less of an info dump, even if it still ultimately is one. if you take a look at the rulebook for pretty much any board game or card game, you'll notice that "the objective of the game" is usually one of the earlier paragraphs, because it gives you a thing to keep in mind to tie everything together.

as an example, the closest board/card game next to me is Rook, so I opened it up and the rulebook *starts with* "the objective of the game is to be the first to reach 300 points". so now while I read the rest of the book any time it mentions points I know those are important and why they are important, it gives me a lens through which to read the rest of the rules that clarifies what sort of game this is.

in your game I noticed that it took quite some time to get around to explaining what the objective was. after a few text boxes I started feeling unfocused because I didn't yet know what all these actions I could take had to do with the objective of the game. since this game is effectively a board game, it might help to open up some board games you have nearby and take a look at how their rules are structured.

absolutely nailed it with the atmosphere, I like the setting and I love the concept. unfortunately the gameplay is quite frustrating, there's a lot to keep track of and missing any of the signal lights means having to wait for the loop to repeat all over for you to get it again. the pattern length is also a bit long, which compounds the problem by making you wait longer and longer for a second chance.

very creative game! I like the community-driven scavenger hunt concept. I think a minimap might be useful, not for finding things but just so I can tell where I've already been since I think I got stuck going in circles at one point.

here's my two images!:

interesting game! I think this game could have been great but it's held back by the number tiles moving so fast I can't actually read them to be able to tell if it's the one I need to progress or if it's going to restart the string. I don't know if there's a fixed number of levels or if it generates them indefinitely but it only took a few levels to escalate to the point where I simply could not progress any further.

as others have mentioned the game would be improved quite a lot if the probes traveled much faster, as it's kind of frustrating to watch it slowly crawl across the screen for each attempt, which then encourages spamming. however, I think another super useful feature would be a trail marker letting you know where the last one went so you can more easily adjust trajectories.

that said, very cool concept! I think there's potential here if expanded on :3

Cosmic Relay by ghettobastler 2026-04-24T22:30:08Z

fantastic game, probably my new favorite entry. on my first playthrough I somehow completely misunderstood what the "main" screen was for and made it to the end having sent 0 packets, but I watched the demo clip and it clicked on my second try (final score was about 700 packets).

honestly I don't think I have any criticisms, the one issue I had with the game was entirely my fault this time. great job!

it's hard for me to rate the gameplay since the game lags massively every time I try to shoot something, it literally freezes on every click. I also think I'm just not the target audience for this type of game, I find the humor style kind of grating even though I can see why many people would enjoy it.

more importantly though, I recognize the song used and know for a fact you did not create it (the song is ダーク - RAVE by drxk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTZgxW_3LIQ), yet this is not disclosed anywhere nor have you opted out of the audio category. it's important to credit your sources, because now all I can think about is what else might have been taken without attribution even if it might just be the bgm.

SILENTIUM by Shram 2026-04-24T20:51:09Z

loved the atmosphere, and all the little touches of needing to perform individual steps of tasks instead of doing the whole task directly makes it feel more engaging for a game that's basically just WASD and mouse. I also enjoyed that you included easter eggs in many of the setpieces which also made the exploration more engaging as well. and of course, the radio is the chef's kiss by providing you something to fiddle with while essentially just driving down a straight path between points of interest. an easy 5 star rating!

Sierra 1-1 by zevwax 2026-04-24T21:30:19Z

I love the art style but it feels like a very simple sort of game. it might have helped if there was something that made the act of locating signals more engaging, like some kind of obstacles or hazards. as it is, it mostly boils down to "here is a message, do you send it?". you have at least made that decision interesting by having it influence the plot, but out of curiosity and I replayed the game and wiped ALL messages and not only was I not punished for being a terrible operator, the story of the good ending still played out normally. could be interesting, but the game feels like it needs more. still, you did finish on time which is commendable, so you should feel good about it

@alaah thank you for your feedback! as for the game over/you win screens, the buttons should read as C and X instead of V and C, during the final stretch we ended up rebinding some of the keys since a ZXCV layout no longer made sense as the game is controlled by 3 buttons and not 4. I thought I fixed all the text but clearly I did not. sorry for the confusion

while playing I noticed 2 things that routinely bothered me: if the shape of the incoming wave doesn't match the current shape of my shield I know I need to scroll to change it, but in which direction I should scroll was never intuitive. the other thing is that it would help if the warning indicators told you what shape the incoming wave was going to have, but it seems it's always a small red triangle. this was especially noticeable when I got deep enough into the game for a very fast moving square wave to come at me from the top of the screen, and there was simply no way I could block it since by the time I realized I was the wrong shape it had already hit the planet. also your debug console is visible, that's probably unintended.

love the graphics though!

Drum`n`Ice by PepeBrante 2026-04-23T20:25:30Z

I've only played a few rhythm games but even still I can tell something feels... off about this one. someone above mentioned a mismatched time signature which could be it, but I think another big thing that's missing from it is an audio cue of some kind to indicate your turn. if there is one, it's too quiet and I didn't notice it. I was routinely thrown off by not realizing when my turn was going to begin until it had already started at which point it was too late to begin a spell. it might have helped if the prep phase appeared before each player turn instead of only appearing in the first one.

TRAFICO by mostlypants 2026-04-27T03:09:39Z

this is a great game all around, the concept is simple but it still has a bit of a learning curve and the art style is very unique. the difficulty spike at level 3 is insane though, it took many retries to be able to pass it. though I did feel motivated to keep making those retries which is something

Lethal Signal by NullMoxy 2026-04-23T21:31:56Z

I think a missed opportunity here is allowing the instructions prompter to display text while not being focused. right now the only way to receive instructions is to actively spend time waiting for them to appear, which feels a little frustrating. I also noticed the radio signal mechanic behaves somewhat strangely, on one attempt I corrected the signal only to have it immediately break again before I could even reach the instruction panel again, which compounds with the previous issue where the radio doesn't work long enough for the full instructions to display.

I like the single player twist on keep talking and nobody explodes though :3
