Wow the things you can now do with AI is Insane. A lovely weird but hauntingly beautiful setting with a nice implementation of the theme. Jumping around the levels was a lot of fun although the character felt a bit floaty and unresponsive at times. But very well done!

brandon1037 2022-10-04 08:33

nice scene, every 10s switch to next scene, but what's the player's goal? it puzzled me

erukolindo 2022-10-04 08:41

@brandon1037 The main goal, as with most platformers, is to reach the end of the level by going to the right. There are also 10 optional pickups hidden across the map for those who prefer exploration.

A beautiful world setting and intriguing mechanic to keep switching up the terrain! I struggle to understand the behaviours of the different enemies and the significance of each world type. The bullets of the turrets are also way too small! In general, the immersion of the world is great, but as a player I would like to have clearer goals and a better understanding of what is happening around me! For example, I realise my jumps are kind of different when the world changes, but they aren't super intuitive mechanics to me, so I'd appreciate more information about what's going on!

very beautiful, it must have been really tough to generate all these AI art assets, we tried and had very little success in creating usable stuff, it is so unpredictable.

ausstein 2022-10-04 15:06

@velvetlobster I used Stable Diffusion instead of Dall-E or Midjourney. It gives a lot more creative control, making it a lot more predictable. On the downside you have to spend time fiddling with all the different settings every time you want to generate something. But once you have found some good settings for a certain asset you can quickly generate a lot of stuff in similar style.

velvetlobster 2022-10-04 15:08

how long was the process of generating those assets? I will definitely try SD on a next one, your assets are crazy good.

ausstein 2022-10-04 21:05

@velvetlobster that varied a lot. Some assets went rather quick like the platforms for normal type. I first asked text to image to generate platforms. that did not work well then I drew a big brown blob into one of the backgrounds and asked it to generate platforms from that. then it took like 3-4 more iterations of choosing the best output image and it was spitting out one great platform after the other. The Ice platforms were trickier. It did not want to turn a white blob into an ice platform and just kept erasing it. eventually I slapped a glacier from google images onto one of the generated backgrounds and, from that, after a few more iterations it was again spitting out one great platform after the other. Then every asset took like a minute of cleanup on photoshop. In total I would say it took ~ 5-30 minutes (it varied a lot) to get a good setup for a new asset and then it would take 1-2 minutes for each variation of that asset.

I had practiced a lot with stable diffusion the last two weeks before LD started. You really need to get a feel for what all the different settings do.

I also plan on making a blogpost about my process when I find the time :)

velvetlobster 2022-10-04 21:26

thanks for the explanation @ausstein I would very much like to see more about this, we have done a lot of stuff with midjourney and recently trying DALE. Did not manage to make them work to generate good game assets though.

Very interesting concept :)

Cool game, the fact that AI can generate stuff like this is awesome. For some reason did not launch on my main monitor. I would probably focused more on getting the movement right and add less monsters as a trade-off. Still was a very impressive game!

simon-rahnasto 2022-10-06 16:06

I just have to say that I love the title "AI whisperer", cool to see the AI art that a lot of people are talking about in action.

I like the mechanic of swapping worlds every 10 seconds, I feel like you used the power of the AI to your advantage in a good way here, since making so many varied worlds would be difficult in the time constraint. Always nice to see advancements in technology lead to interesting innovations

erlioniel 2022-10-06 20:51

It's curious that not many games on LD are utilizing AI generated assets and I guess mostly because it doesn't makes things easier, right? :smirk:

savolae 2022-10-06 20:54

I liked that some parts required a certain world to be active in order to proceed. The enemies felt a bit tanky, though. Pretty cool that you created the assets with AI.

paul-avallone 2022-10-07 04:22

I like the feel of the gun with it's two bullet types. I think the controls for the player are a little too floaty. I thought it was neat touch that in the winter version that you slide and can swim up high in the underwater one. I wish there was more visual feedback when you hit enemies like a white flash similar to the red flash when the player character is hurt. Cool little platformer. Good job.

I accidentally checked "Do not rate on Theme" in the beginning. If you guys could quickly leave a Vote on Theme, that would be much appreciated! Thank you!

keenan-woodall 2022-10-07 15:17

I like the idea behind the world (season?) changing every 10 seconds. I would have liked if the controls were less floaty and I didn't feel super incentivized to shoot the monsters since they had so much health and don't feel rewarding to kill. It's interesting to see a game with art generated by AI!

simon-rahnasto 2022-10-07 17:26

@ausstein That happened to me once, it's very easy due to how the checkbox basically has a huge width: https://gyazo.com/c7f229db1da95070e11f731818cb75d3

Thank you for the ping, I have now voted in theme as well

ping78 2022-10-07 19:46

Cool little platformer. Aside from player movement, bullets feel way to slow. Props for not using Greg or Artstation in the prompts. Well done.

ausstein 2022-10-07 19:51

@ping78 actually with the artstyle I was going for, many of the common style words in the prompts made them worse. Instead of High detail, Sharp, 4k, Trending on artstarion etc. I often even used low detail and blur :)

paul-nadan 2022-10-08 19:03

I really liked the concept of slightly changing the physics and switching around a few platforms every 10s, so you need to wait for the right world to make progress. I think the player felt a little slow and floaty, which could be fixed by just scaling up the speed and gravity a bit. The combat could also be sped up a bit, e.g. making the gun fire much faster, making the player's bullets travel faster, having more enemies but with less health, etc, so that you don't have to spend more than a couple seconds standing still shooting at any one target. The AI art was beautiful and and really made each world feel super immersive. It would be nice to change the text color for higher contrast, depending on the world. Great work!

jirrev 2022-10-08 23:17

Nice usage of the theme to change seasons and a good usage of the seasons to change the gameplay of the level. The only issue I had was that if I was being chased by enemies it became basically impossible to stop them if they got too close, especially with two of them.

mandy858 2022-10-08 23:25

It's really a nice game. You nailed the theme. The maps were so nice. The monsters were kind of stupid and I would have like a gun upgrade, because damn, this gun is so bad xD. But really nice game. I was always waiting for underwater, it was my favorite. Great job :D

alaah 2022-10-09 12:44

Randomized dimension order is a bad idea that results in too much downtime. The underwater dimension is overpowered

madlen 2022-10-09 12:45

well done, i thisnk it was a little hard to play beacuse of the floaty character, but everything else was very nice done! Great job!

epicgamefan 2022-10-09 12:47

Really cool take on the theme. I really enjoyed the art and the challenge to it.

lbrande 2022-10-09 13:55

Cool litle 2d platformer. Enemies have a bit too many hit points for it to feel really satisfying.

tero-pulkkinen 2022-10-09 14:06

the graphics was nice. Took some time to figure out the controls, but they worked fine afterwards. And the 10 second scene change was awesome.

amarokczukay 2022-10-09 16:00

seing the graphics in each phase was a super nice and relaxing experience. such a great thing you've been playing with AI!

how physics change depending on your phase was also a nice addition!
