LD46 — Keep it alive

Autoexec by reheated 2020-05-10T08:12:00Z

This game is very cool. I like the main idea, never thought about the level-up system this way. Controlls are smooth, shooting is fun. However, I would make enemies' projectiles brighter to make them more distinct from the background. Overall, enjoyed your game very much, cool for a Compo submission. I'll add yours to my list https://wans24.itch.io/he-needs-healing/devlog/140983/what-ludum-dare-46-did-to-me

Keep it Afloat by janmarcano 2020-04-21T21:56:47Z

Nice aestetics, but some assets don't really match each other. The game is very similar to Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and I think it's good. We need more cooperative games of this type when you controll some ship together.

Waste of Space by souperstrawer 2020-04-26T10:24:02Z

Copperoute by sunnray 2020-04-21T21:28:49Z

Sorry, but I don't understand what to do. I connect two monsters and enter does not start food transportation. Can't get why it is so. However, graphics are nice and music is atmospheric.

Interesting and cute game. Liked the graphics a lot, idea is very funny.

Dr. Glebin's Electric Brain by Daniel Alhadeff 2020-05-11T20:36:10Z

Awesome game. Can't say anything bad about this. I enjoyed it a lot, especially because I once had a similar idea of managing many devices to keep running, but never made a complete game out of this. Good job)

Untitled Sport Game by fancypants 2020-05-10T07:57:33Z

Very fun game and nice visuals. Simple, but enjoyable. Also, reminds me of my current project.

Keep Space Alive by R2D48 2020-04-21T13:44:42Z

Nice concept, I guess a good simple game can be made out of it. Also, paralax effect when flying is cool. However, for some reason when I press W or A my cursor appears and the ship doesn't move. Also, settings button is for some reason is not functional. I don't know if it is only my problem. I tried using Google Chrome and Opera browsers. P.S. Saw your controlls hint and I guess you are using AZERTY layout. I thing you should make an option to change controlls for QWERTY or AZERTY layouts. People are a bit confused by ZQSD movement.

Hunting a Cure by jellycopter 2020-04-21T22:00:49Z

The game looks good, like that kind of artstyle. Sounds feel nice, but shooting gets repetative. Theme interpetation is interesting.

Leap Of Faith by ryan123rudder 2020-04-27T09:16:42Z

Interesting theme interpretation, very funny. However, I think the game lacks some slingshot polishing. To feel the speed and acceleration. Also, fish is flying with more or less the same speed and stops slowly. This particular slingshot mechanic is very well executed in this game https://uppon-hill.itch.io/remember-apollo I guess you can look for ideas there. Overall, good game, I enjoyed it.

Wandering Star by twigames 2020-04-21T13:55:22Z

Very cool artstyle, I like it and dynamic gameplay that makes you engaged. Music is nice. By the way agree with posts above about "doot" sound going too loud and repetative. I would make the sound softer.

Interesting runner. Nice idea with life-shots tradeoff. Good UI and look. I guess with some cool music and effects you can make some fun mobile game.

Mammoth Expedition by Abdurrahman Khallouf 2020-04-25T15:02:46Z

The game is good and well balanced. Love the arts and situations, though yes-no buttons are a bit small for mobile.

Pong-Pong by Geri 2020-04-27T09:10:56Z

Game is pretty good. Good looking, sounds well and has fun shooting mechanic with nice impact. However, protecting the car is not very interesting for me, because there's no special mechanics connected with it. Also room transitions are too slow.

Remember, Apollo by AdamCYounis 2020-04-22T18:44:48Z

Keep the Plants alive! by Bohrmaschine2000 2020-04-21T14:04:50Z

Looks nice, feels good and responsive. Good decision to mark where enemies spawn before they do it. Wonder if you finish it in future.

The King's Gun Guy by Leonardo Fraga 2020-04-21T21:41:18Z

Cute artstyle, upgrade system is good as it adds new fire modes rather than just bigger numbers of splash or damage. Visual effects feel good. Sounds get a little annoying after some time. Would be nice to improve impact when shooting enemies, add animations, make controlls more familiar like shop to Tab button.

A minute and a half by brokenVectors 2020-04-24T21:22:50Z

@martin183 Wonder why I see your comment right after watching "Leon" movie. Huh. Actually, never thought about that, but this jam is 99% Leon-proof with all those plant saving simulators

A minute and a half by brokenVectors 2020-04-24T21:29:24Z

The game is very impressive for your age. Appreciate that) Maybe you can add wells to refill water to make the game a bit more diverse. Probably, some more particles that emit from plants when you water them for some impact.

Protect The Artifact by WillyPa 2020-04-27T09:32:19Z

Concept is nice, if you add more impact and some gameplay mechanics to improve combat it would be really good. Visuals are good, though they lack some little details and better sprites overall, love the glow. The character runs very fast even without boost, so it's hard to control him. Maybe it's how it was intended, but I think that controlls should be more precise. All in all, good job for 48 hours.

ÁED - The Spark of Life by itsatony 2020-04-25T13:08:51Z

Great game, good visuals. However running and jumping felt a bit off on slopes, checkpoints would be nice, step's sounds in my opinion are strange, they are too loud and sharp. Apart from that, good game, hope you will complete it.

Keep Him Alive by Convg 2020-04-24T21:50:39Z

Fun game. The game was very intence when playing with Lunatic track by Static-X with all that screen shake and rythmic clicking experience. Talking without joking this is a nice roguelike-like. Screenshake makes combat satisfying, but maybe it's too hard like there's an earthquake. Some particles and sounds would make it significantly better. Now I'll go and check out the post LD version.

Keep Him Alive by Convg 2020-04-24T22:26:47Z

I've just finished upgraded version. This time with It's not too late - A killer's confession in the background. Post LD update is good. That two-sided sword strike animation is really funny when you swing it all around you. Knockback is a nice idea, makes the game a little more fair and...smart I guess. Actually, I finished your game, for some reason it got me and I was engaged. By the way, when the character runs diagonally he is a lot faster, is that a Quake reference?

Keep Him Alive by Convg 2020-04-25T08:02:34Z

Hey there! I thought like, what if I speedrun your game. And I tried to do this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agxc8TF4DCY

Keep Him Alive by Convg 2020-04-25T13:34:31Z

@convg As you can see I really enjoyed killing enemies all around and knocking them back. For that reason, if you would like to, you could make some combat mechanics for big numbers of enemies with some crowd control abilities. Guess that it would be really fun to mess around with tons of enemies slashing them.

Keep Him Alive by Convg 2020-04-25T21:00:20Z

@convg Don't understand the thing with the second point of the update, but I want to say that circle attack makes the game too easy and I think, that if I make another speedrun I will improve my result by another 30 seconds.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-21T14:27:52Z

@pvg Choice of keys is not for difficulty, but for comfort. Like if you put your fingers of left arm on a keyboard they can be pretty nicely be laid on D,F,G keys with index finger lying on F. I thought it's better. @jojo-the-clown And yeah, guess "slain" is correct). Thanks for all the feedback.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-21T14:29:48Z

Aaand I guess my Source crashes Godot editor because I am using 3.1.1 for it, not 3.2. It can be the case. Not really sure.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-21T14:47:57Z

@matt-lewis @sunnray I guess I can make some update later. Actually, a good idea to call spells, not buttons. And they get faster over time, as well as enemies' spawning.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-24T05:26:31Z

@morriekken The idea with breaks is good, the game can get really intense at some point, at which you get tired. The thing that you felt overwhelmed means that my purpose to make player feel busy all the time is accomplished. I wanted to make a feeling that you always can't keep up with the pace.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-24T05:33:39Z

By the way, personally I didn't feel like the game was too tough. Maybe it's because I had a lot of practice while developing) It gets a lot easier if you play several runs in a row.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-24T22:21:29Z

@room606 It's endless, because you never do what that warrior did. He went on a fight with high-level boss, luckily he had a high-level cleric friend who heals him, so this battle will basically never end. I guess that I will make start a bit easier. Thanks for feedback)

@douwe-ravers Good idea, never thought about that

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-27T14:27:09Z

@rodrigo-denubila Actually, this is what the game does, so if you consider beginning difficult, you don't even know how it is after about 2K points. Maybe I will lower the curve a bit in the beginning, no problem

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-27T20:16:22Z

@sokette There are a lot of suggestions from good people of the commentaries. I'll add them after LD is finished. Readability is one of them. Thanks for playing!

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-28T05:17:10Z

@emperor-eagle @alaah Thanks for quality feedback. Yeah, I thought a lot about DFG decision after finishing the development. I decided that I am smarter than traditions and made a different layout. It's like AZERTY keyboards, maybe they suit typing better, but they are not familiar for 99% of people, so their advantages are washed away by traditions. I'll change the controls later.

He Needs Healing by WanS24 2020-04-28T05:19:46Z

@alaah And thanks for playing my game till 30K. You seem to really like it, if you got to this score.

What a horrible night... by chertkov 2020-04-22T08:49:02Z

Visuals are neat, but I think there's too much red color and objects become a mess on a screen. Not very readable when playing and it's what you want your game to be readable when developing a dynamic shoot'em'up. Also, gameplay is not well balanced, because you actually can't properly bite people because you stuck in them and there are too many of them. Your minions die very fast and you can't last very long which is not particularly fun experience. However, concept is good and just needs balance, polishing, better and more UI elements and then I guess it's going to be a really nice fast paced game. Dodge people, bite them, make your army to fight another incoming army, sounds fun if made properly)

KIA by Marlo 2020-04-21T13:39:35Z

Cute game. Sounds are nice, screen shake makes a bit of an impact, particles do the same. However, controlls are not really intuitive, it would be nice to mark what bar is for HP and XP and experience orbs in my case spawned very rarely. I think you can make a neat mobile game out of this.

KIA by Marlo 2020-04-21T13:43:40Z

Yeah, and I actually like the interface.

S.L.I.M.E.S. Division by Yoshify 2020-04-23T17:37:21Z

Keep It Charged by LaZZyDev72 2020-04-21T13:49:45Z

Nice puzzle game. Simple, but fancy graphics and good levels. However, I still don't get how movement actually works. Maybe it's buggy or I just didn't understand.

Keep It Charged by LaZZyDev72 2020-04-21T20:59:24Z

@lazzydev72 I mean I didn't get how the direction is chosen. I can't understand why it slides in a particular direction. The camera is not that intuitive

Keep It Charged by LaZZyDev72 2020-04-22T08:38:57Z

@lazzydev72 I guess I can describe in details. It's a bit of a problem because level restarts really slowly, transitions are too long and you don't want to experiment a lot. Also, the robot uses a battery when running in a wall, that's not good. Controlls for some reason sometimes don't work from first key press. Like when I press W and the robot stands still. It leads to situations in which you press a key multiple times and the robot runs twice and uses batteries when you don't want. And about movement direction. It's hard to understand at first where the robot goes when I press the keys. Maybe you can make some kind of marks on the robot or a little hint in the corner that shows which key does top-right, top-left and so on movement. Because of isometric view it's not obvious. And menus don't response to button pressing from first try.

Keep It Charged by LaZZyDev72 2020-04-22T10:16:36Z

@lazzydev72 Actually, I run the game in Ultra settings, so there can be an issue of other type. About transitions, I think you can make an update with loading bar to make it clear that the game has not loaded completely yet. By the way, I looked at your source and maybe input problem is behind if-else system. There's a lot of stuff going on in the movement code, so it can be laggy or miss some true-false condition. It does not set a variable to True properly and movement doesn't happen. Maybe it's the case. I make that assumption, because in my currently developed game I had a problem with movement for this particular reason. If-else can have those problems, I would check it.

Keep It Charged by LaZZyDev72 2020-04-22T10:39:05Z

Purple Thing! by 3LSTMsInATrenchcoat 2020-04-26T10:04:29Z

This game is very fun and I laughed for some reason which I cannot explain. Good take on the theme, pretty smart level design and it's actually interesing that your game is very similar to https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/dino-spin Which I consider nice, because Dino Spin is my favourite game of the jam for now. I have a few suggestions. Maybe make hitbox of purple thing! a few pixels smaller than the actual sprite for invisible comfort improvement and feelings like "NOOOOO...okay it's fine, I caught it". Also some coyote time for better jumping. You can make some dynamic action levels where you need to run without stops. Overall, enjoyed the game a lot. Wisp by Squeg Inc. 2020-05-10T07:26:14Z

The idea is nice and visuals are pretty, however the balance is not that great. Health is never a problem in this game and you dodge 90% of projectiles by simply running around the arena and if you need to take a pickup, you just tank all damage while shooting enemies and that's it. Also, I think the game need more impact and particles to feel great.

Genki by GOD COLO 2020-04-26T14:44:04Z
