Build and upload for webGL on itch.io please !

itsatony 2020-04-21 14:53

Hey @lucascampos - we will try. Will install the compiler and see if it works. Will update you! really sorry, but i can't get the web think to work well enough so far.. :(

mira 2020-04-21 18:38

I've been looking forward to the game since the publication of the screenshots and I still can't help it, but I like the graphics, especially the Flame animation (but sometimes the walking animation doesn't start). Maybe it would like to fine-tune the control, often the Flame jumps out differently than I press a spacebar. Finally, I enjoyed the game and I believe that after fine-tuning a few details, the game would be suitable for evening relaxing gaming.

Loved the character, and the overall color pallet was wonderfull!

I would have liked to see a little more visual representation of the change in burn rate. Even just a little shift in the hue or some post processing glow.

The speed difference also did not feel quite as meaningful as I would have liked.

Wonderful concept though, would love to see this one developed a little further!

nice game. good music and flame animation. it not obvious what surface is solid and what just a background you. mb it might be tricky. it need time to adapt. when you run to left on start u fall but don't get "you died" appear

god-colo 2020-04-24 18:46

This game is dope! I really love the art ! Reminds me of blackthornprod! Even after dying I kept playing because of how smooth the controls are. The animations is also mesmerizing! Greato Jobu!

drewstillwell 2020-04-24 18:47

cool little game! Loved the little fire dude. Had trouble telling what was background and what was platform sometimes, would have liked a little more contrast there.

Your "Don't" note didn't stop me :)

lukebenkart 2020-04-24 18:53

Very nice game! The graphics are really nice! Maybe make it so that there is a bigger change for each burn phase.

wallyfoo 2020-04-24 18:54

The look is absolutely top-notch. Great concept. I was a little unclear on the mechanic of the burn intensity. It seemed to control the speed of the character and jump height at the expense of the life of the character? I would love to see the game refined and developed.

owl-and-jackalope 2020-04-24 18:56

Really great game! Fun mechanic where you have throw out your spark. The jumping was a touch too extreme in some cases that made it difficult for you to move between platforms. Overall, I enjoyed the game and I thought the little narrations were a nice touch.

ukirain 2020-04-24 18:59

Nice game!

baubau 2020-04-24 19:09

Great job on your first project! Keep it up! I enjoyed the game and it's a nice entry. I think the controls feel a bit off and when asked to use the mouse, it was strange for me.

itsatony 2020-04-24 19:33

thanks for all the nice feedback folks! we will update the game after the judging period and take your great constructive criticism to heart and improve!

itsatony 2020-04-25 09:17

@lucascampos (and all) . finally got the unity webGL build done. You can find it here: https://aed.itsatony.com/ Performance is not ideal, but hey, better than nothing! Hope you enjoy!

karenin-dmitry 2020-04-25 10:21

Looks nice, i like sounds of running. But every time (~10 attempts) i fell into the abyss at the beginning, so i can't say a lot :( And i don't get how to use mouse right click. P.s. If you creating pause menu, add please "Main menu" or "Exit" button to give the player the possibility to exit game

wans24 2020-04-25 13:08

Great game, good visuals. However running and jumping felt a bit off on slopes, checkpoints would be nice, step's sounds in my opinion are strange, they are too loud and sharp. Apart from that, good game, hope you will complete it.

itsatony 2020-04-25 13:23

@karenin-dmitry thanks for the feedback! the mouse action is a "last resort" for otherwise almost impossible chasms. you can only "survive" sending your spark out (left mouse) when you target a tree.

abyss at the beginning: left is death (hence the "Don't" storypoint ;) .. was meant as a joke.. not working well i guess ehehe). to the right, you go down a lot, but that's the "right" way ..

it's a huge level and - as @wans24 pointed out correctly (thanks for that idea, will add it), we should have added checkpoints. it's just that with the limited time, we wanted to see if anybody was able to complete the whole level without that feature.

and .. YES, the pause menu was a very under-time-pressure thing we added and it's very much lacking. will be fixed after LD judging is over.

great feedback from everyone btw - we love this event and the community! it's been a blast taking part for the first time and making our first game!

itsatony 2020-04-25 13:30

oh, and the jumping from steep slopes: yeah, that's actually been quite a nightmare to code to be honest. with all the velocity and angular momentum that comes from basic running and jumping (especially with varying burn-rates) slopes have a pretty dramatic effect (especially downward) and lead to almost constant "falling" which, in our case, prevents jumping (double-jumps and wall-jumps were not planned for the early game). Hence, we added additional forces to bring down Áed (the character) when moving along slopes, basically glueing it to the ground and releasing the "glue" whenever Jump is pressed. That kinda works, but i would have needed another few hours to make it feel better and work dynamically based on current velocity. Certainly something we will improve on for the full game to be released. (and.. as novices in game development, we learned the hard way why basically all platformers use STRAIGHT ground and platforms for most of the game ;) ... it's really easy to overlook the added complexity from what our gfx and game-designers wanted here :D ... [and .. i have not been able to find a good tutorial on that topic .. how about one @brackeys?]

linus 2020-04-25 15:43

Cool atmosphere and fun gameplay with a lot of twists to the mechanics. I think that the game was fun and the different elements kept me engaged.

I understand the jumping was hard to implement because of the terrain but since this was such a core element to the game it was unfortunate it didn't work that well. The delay after you press spacebar makes it so much harder to time the jumps, it really should be instantaneous in platformer games. I hope you don't give up the idea and try to make it work for future games or maybe revisit this one.

Solid entry overall

itsatony 2020-04-25 15:45

thanks @linus - fully agree with you on the jump! will improve it and it's really hard not to submit a "fixed" version now :)

despdair 2020-04-25 20:46

nice game, it lagged on html5 version, I don't know if it is about me or a general problem but it was unplayable at some points

fabian-g 2020-04-25 21:23

Neat game, very nice atmosphere  Bit laggy for me too on chrome, but overall GJ :-)

natasza 2020-04-25 22:43

Cool game, consistent visuals and great atmosphere! As mentioned above legged on html5 version.

itsatony 2020-04-26 07:03

@despdair @fabian-g @natasza thanks for the feedback! The html/webGL version is laggy. The PC version is fine as far as we can judge. The level is probably just too big for the browser - sorry about that.

wans24 2020-04-26 08:16

Included your game in my list) https://wans24.itch.io/he-needs-healing/devlog/140983/what-ludum-dare-46-did-to-me

itsatony 2020-04-26 10:05

much appreciated @wans24 - nice idea to collect personal favorites too!

fatpenguin 2020-04-26 15:15

What a charming little game! I can't believe you got into game development mere 6 weeks ago! First of all, the obvious - this is beautiful, atmospheric, and the UI Style (Font, Tutorial in HUD etc.) really really complement the whole mood :) the gameplay is exiting and sweet what a good idea! You should continue to work on this with controller support I feel like this can push your game to the next level and become even more smooth (for example, I'd use the arrow buttons to tune the flame up and down), and if you tweak the graphics more (add more assets etc, I know I know gamejams, ain't nobody got time for that haha) this could become a sweet little game with more cool mechanics :) Btw: I didn't manage the first spark jump thing and got frustrated :( but I will continue to try later on :) Good work overall!

itsatony 2020-04-26 15:19

@fatpenguin thanks so much for your kind AND constructive feedback, much appreciated! 6 weeks is true and all, but of course I am an experienced overall developer (no c# before though) and the artist is also really experienced. But Unity and the great community around game-dev overall make learning super easy and events like LD make it all worth the invested spare time. A dream to build something others enjoy :)

generictoast 2020-04-26 15:35

A really fun game with a really beautiful art style! Optimizing the web version of the game might be a good idea though, since most people play the web version. Still, great job!

itsatony 2020-04-26 16:32

thanks @generictoast ! yeah, you are right but i think we would need to significantly change game content to optimize the web version and that kinda feels like cheating before ld-scoring ends. The level is just HUGE and it seems that's a no-go for the web version (many many gameobjects, colliders, animations, particles, ...).
