Great animations!

pixipit 2020-04-21 02:04

Omg i wish i could do this amazing graphics. Well done!

senseless-compass 2020-04-21 02:06

Extremely fluid and cute!

briibot 2020-04-21 06:34

The work on this is positively astounding! The music is smooth and appealing, and the art is a joy to look at - all of the animations are beautiful! who can be mad at bugs destroying your tree when the animation for its death are that nice?

At first I wasnt certain what the watering can was for - I spent a fair bit of time wondering if they gave health back to trees damaged by bugs. This is likely because I'm a hoarder and didn't buy many of the smaller plants from the shop, so that is mostly on me. I also felt like the time before the first wave was quite long, but this could again be because I didn't buy much from the shop. Lastly, I wasn't certain if the side entrances were entrances for bugs, or teleports to the opposite side a la pacman style for the bugs! Some variety of indicator during wave prep time of where bugs are coming from may be nice if they are multiple entrances.

All in all, excellent work! I'm frankly floored that you set this all up in 72 hours, and I'm excited to see the future projects your group makes!!

joh 2020-04-21 07:04

Ok, this is amazing! from graphics, to music, to gameplay, all there working in beautiful balance. Game works well, I'll admit I wasn't too sure what the plant coloring meant, because wattering and color did not collerate perfectly, and watering alone wasn't enough to bloom plant (was it only time?), but the grand lines were clear enough, make plants defend the master plant. Things got progressively harder such that it did not overstay its welcome and yet, I can say I played a lot longer than I expected! Only thing I think could be improved is plant variety, but with the polish on everything; who can complain?!

Plants and actions... plant vs zombie, dark soil, now this... Might be a secret winner formula!! Well done!

huang-sicheng 2020-04-21 08:23

Played 10 waves, still cannot buy the bug nuke :( An excellent with nice graphics, music and gameplay! I enjoyed myself jumping up and down to transport my plants. And I earned much money by selling my plants.

alphazeba 2020-04-21 16:55

@briibot @joh Thanks a lot for your extended reviews! We are working on a bit of a "Gardening Guide" to help with this because it is a bit more complicated than is immediately apparent. Hopefully the gardening guide will be up later today, but the short version is growth, hp, and water are all separate meters, but water is connected to both. High water allows a plant to mature faster, and if they are fully watered, they will heal. Low water plants will begin to take damage and mature slower if not already grown. Plant color is determined by their current health

alphazeba 2020-04-21 17:02

@huang-sicheng Thanks for playing and sending a review! Yeah, the nuke is very expensive. But you will only ever need to buy one. *hint hint*

grossepelle 2020-04-21 18:39

Forsure we dont had the same "72hours" haha.I enjoyed a loott the game and the graphics, but I'm not enough patient to end it and once i stacked all my flowers it became...less fun. But it's still a yesss!

lairinlair 2020-04-21 19:31

First: I cannot stress enough how this soundtrack is AMAZING. The art is super cute and cool and the sound effects were great too. In the end I was kinda tired but hey, I was alive for half an hour, hahah. Really, really, really great job!

royalsoup 2020-04-21 19:44

@lairinlair Thank you!! I'm glad you liked the music. As I've played it a few times, it takes me about 20 mins to get to the nuke. ;P Thanks for spending as much time on it as you did! :D

zesix 2020-04-22 00:22

My goodness, this entry has such great production level. AMAZING job!

zerohbeat 2020-04-22 00:43

Really enjoyed playing the game, though not sure how everything works together. Was there time for sleeping? It feels really high quality! Thank you for the experience, the art, music, everything blends really well together.

rrsmtz 2020-04-22 06:30

This game has a lot of visual appeal and the music and sfx are great. However, it took me a few tries to really 'get' what the core gameplay loop of this game was - a good tutorial would go a long way. Still, great job! I could see this game going as far as you want to take it.

splitpainter 2020-04-22 08:24

Amazing aesthetics, I love specially the plant design and coloring.

sandra-jasionowska 2020-04-22 08:31

This game is really satisfiying. The visuals, the music and the idea were nice! Is there a way to grow new trees? Two of mine died at the beginning before I got what do I actually have to do  Great submission!

tom-stephenson 2020-04-22 08:40

The animations and overall visual style for this game is great! Even the menus have had the same level of detail as the rest of the game! It plays really well and is an overall fun and cute concept which I like a lot! A great submission, well done!

spreadsheetlover 2020-04-22 08:40

Very cute and really polished, I like it! The framerate it quite low on my PC, feels like <20 FPS Once the gameplay is figured out, the difficulty is too easy and ramps up too slowly. It can take a very long time to feel challenging and there are lots of other games to look at... I stopped before I got to the nuke I'm afraid. Would like to play this with a gamepad.

cowa 2020-04-22 08:42

Very good game! My favorite so far!

Good job the team!

lapisraider 2020-04-22 09:01

I really love the animation and graphics of this game! It's really cute! There could be more feedback when attacking a monster though, cause it was not too obvious and I had trouble telling if my attacks actually hit the monster or not sometimes.

Really enjoyed the game though! The movement and controls also felt really smooth and polished. Great work!

peterfiftyfour 2020-04-22 09:25

What how do you get the nuke in 20 mins!??? The later waves are really hard and the towers dont seem to scale their damage. This was awesome btw! Really cute, love the music, animations are slick. One of my faves from the jam! Capture.PNG

peterfiftyfour 2020-04-22 09:58

Revenge!

Capture.PNG

alex-davies 2020-04-22 10:09

The music is incredible! I'm amazed you managed to make this in such a short time.

kanonix 2020-04-22 10:24

Truly impressive ! The music, the art, the gameplay.. There is everything ! Lovely !

unityyyy 2020-04-22 10:46

I liked every part of it! Just all around a really well made, fun and polished game.

epsulon 2020-04-22 10:51

Good ui and animations

wans24 2020-04-22 11:56

The game look very polished. Graphics are mezmerizing, sounds are good and the game is actually fun to play. Good job)

terrykk 2020-04-22 13:54

It's really good game. Good graphics, UI, music, perfect.

sofy35 2020-04-22 14:13

I'm very impressed by this game !! The graphics are cute, the concept is really cool... Congrats !! I had a lot of fun playing this game

demkimos 2020-04-22 15:14

Really great game! I was able to spend so much time on the game. The graphics and animations are so cute. Fleur Defense really lives up to the name and doesn't disappoint. I thought the price for the nuke was pretty steep but looks like someone did get it so I guess I'll need to go for a second time  I thought everything was pretty straightforward but not once did it lose its charm. I don't really know what to complain about so I guess that's a good thing. Well balanced, I think; the hydration timers did not once leave me alone to rest. Thank you so much for the game!

sheinxy 2020-04-22 16:49

Incredible!

The gameplay is funny! (As a fan of "survive the waves" type of games, I can say I had a blast uwu)

The art is just wow, and the music is nice (I reqlly love the music playing during a wave, it feels kind of jazz-like, I really love it!)

Impressive, one of my favorites!

New_Piskel.gif

ponypen 2020-04-22 17:10

Those animations are beautiful <3 :D I had a lot of fun playing this game it's so pretty and lovely to look at, congrats on the amazing job you've done!

alphazeba 2020-04-22 17:47

@peterfiftyfour wow nice, how'd you lose so few plants!? I only beat it the first time myself yesterday lol. I was quicker, but lost so many more plants youwin.png

alphazeba 2020-04-22 17:48

@sandra-jasionowska nope, losing the lemons is permanent lol. Thanks for playing!

royalsoup 2020-04-22 17:52

@peterfiftyfour 😘

alphazeba 2020-04-22 17:53

@spreadsheetlover hm, is it just our game that is giving you frame issues? Controller support is definitely near the top of the priorities if we decide to continue building this. Depends on what people think lol

langotriel 2020-04-22 19:58

Among the best art I have seen so far, and one of the most polished experiences. You should be proud! Good use of the theme, as well; there ain't nothing getting to my plant :sunflower: :sunglasses:

peachtreeoath 2020-04-22 21:40

Really great mashup here. It's both satisfying to build up your towers, and devastating when you lose them. I'm not even talking about the lemon trees, I felt like I failed each plant when they died! I found it rather easy to find a good workflow so I was able to build a strong army and sustainable economy early. Unfortunately I didn't realize there was a set amount of waves, I thought it was endless so I quit early. Regardless, the game loop was fun, especially early on when I wasn't quite sure where to place things and what to build. With more plants and enemies this could surely be a hit.

cileth 2020-04-22 23:01

@peachtreeoath It actually is endless unless you manage to buy a bug nuke...but I don't want to soil any surprises. Thanks for playing!

peachtreeoath 2020-04-22 23:27

Ahh ok thanks, I will revisit this after going through all the other LD entries then!

s-j-palmer 2020-04-22 23:51

This was great - the design, music, the fun take on the tower defense theme. One thing I was confused by for the first 5 minutes was when I could buy plants - I even thought my tab key wasn't working for a bit. I also wish the rounds had been a little quicker. However some of my favourite animations and I particularly loved the design of the hitter with the leaf shield!

sanjana 2020-04-23 01:49

I love the graphics of this game and it was super fun! It might actually be one of my favorites yet in ludum dare 46!

mhykah 2020-04-23 02:33

That was a really fun game! I really liked every aspect of it. The sounds, music, art, and animation all fit in together really well. One small thing is that I was first confused about which platforms I could stand on, I think one of them might be missing at outline. It would also be useful to know how much damage the plants and I do so that I can make better informed decisions. Overall it was really well done and I'd love to come back and play this if it gets updated. Amazing work!

zyllen 2020-04-23 02:57

Great game! realy fun to play

tyler-anders 2020-04-23 02:59

Great Game! My favorite of the jam so far. I made a platformer as well but your controls feel a lot smoother than mine did really great entry.

herniewise 2020-04-23 04:37

Yeah this is a really great game! I think the chill out music is a little out of place but it works anyway, it's strange haha

I want to get that money from lemons IRL

trexxak 2020-04-23 04:39

Mysteriously the game won't load on my machine D: Like, yes, there will be a process, but it won't show up anywhere but in the task manager. Any idea why?

Really looking forward to finally play this and be sure I'll try my best to fix it myself :3

/edit: nvm, fixed by downloading again. weird.

alphazeba 2020-04-23 05:15

@trexxak that is weird, glad it worked out :P

ahistyap 2020-04-23 06:13

Very fun and challenging gameplay, cute graphics, but I don't know about the music, sounds too slow despite the almost non-stop combat and building tower. Regardless, definitely 5 stars!

trexxak 2020-04-23 06:32

I do agree with Lizette. Why worry about Quarantine if you should really question why the mother plant is offering you a weapon of mass destruction winkwinknudgenudge

Great game! Had lots of fun with it. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing. The preparation song especially has that 24/7-Chillhop-Music-to-Study-and-Relax-to vibe to it :DD

The animation work on the trees is a little detail that makes such a world of difference I feel. The animation work in general is phenomenal. Everything feels so slick and sensible.

Really polished up game! I am very thankful to be able to play it. I can't think of a single thing I did not enjoy. Absolutely great work!

thedoctoroftime 2020-04-23 06:53

After Tiny Fragments I didn't there could be a better game. bruh I'm blown away this is amazing wow. I love the music, it actually made me turn off the playlist I had playing in the background.

madebychaz 2020-04-23 09:03

Very nice! High marks on this one for me. Jumping felt responsive and movement was smooth. Sound effetcs worked nicely. Good to see a menu that allowed to quit application, something of a rarity in the other games I've played so far.

Nice colour palette and interesting take on the Super Crate Box formula. Overall a very tidy and polished package with fantastic music. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your entry!

james-kusardi 2020-04-23 09:43

good polish, feels like a complete product - the mechanics aren't necessarily my thing, but still enjoyed it!

pixnpickstudio 2020-04-23 12:28

What more to say! Well Done !

svalinn85 2020-04-23 15:22

On of the best games so far. Awesome art and animations.. awesome music, cool concept :)

ausstein 2020-04-23 16:28

Yeah many 5 stars from me as Well what a good job. When I died on wave 16 it told me I had just spend over half an hour on this and I did't even notice. That basically says everything. Charming art addictive gameplay and good audio. Well done

lars-erik 2020-04-23 21:54

High quality stuff all together. Well done! Got a bit monotone around wave 4, but for jam this was awesome.

jin9310 2020-04-24 20:08

Omg this is so awesome! Love the art and sounds! Well, there is not much I can say I don´t like on your entry or at least I could complaint about. Really great work! Thank you for this, and now, I want some more.

alphazeba 2020-04-24 21:04

@lars-erik thankyou! we had big dreams about all the plants and enemies that would be in the game. most of it got jammed out of the game lol

lars-erik 2020-04-24 21:48

@alphazeba know the feeling. 😁🤷‍♂️

peterfiftyfour 2020-04-25 01:28

@alphazeba I kinda cheesed it by spamming plants near the tree then selling them all, buying more, selling again until I had a booming plant economy going. Didn't even venture up after the first 5 or so mins :D

lungtakumi 2020-04-25 02:44

Really good gameplay, interesting idea. Beautiful graphic and music.

abdurrahman-khallouf 2020-04-25 02:52

this is an epic entry. I really enjoyed it and I think it would make a great game.

I wanted to keep playing but there is no telling how am I progressing or if its even endless. around Wave10 I got bored a little bit.

I also didn't understand the Red planets? the music choice for defending I didn't like.its a good track needs a little bit dangerous beats. even though its a gardening game :)

all in all I wanted more action and to progress faster. probably will get hard later IDK is there a play through for this?

over all this is one of the best entries I've played so far. great job!

cileth 2020-04-25 03:36

@abdurrahman-khallouf thanks for playing! The redness of the plants is basically the health bar of the plant. The more red, the closer the plant is to death. Plants can heal themselves if they are mostly hydrated (will see a green particle effect when they are healing) and will start taking damage if they are less hydrated (smoking particle).

We went for a more chill vibe for the music, but if your mother plant gets below 25% the music changes up to something more menacing. Thanks for the feedback though, I can see it needing to be a bit more intense.

Ideally we would want the difficult to ramp up faster. As it turns out it's very difficult to tune balance and make the game simultaneously!

grandtheftmarmot 2020-04-25 03:46

Wow wow wow. Every part of this stands out. My girlfriend and I keep coming back to watch the animation of the girl's idle dancing and laugh. This was a very very fun and lovable entry.

samstallion 2020-04-25 04:45

@grandtheftmarmot my better half also gets a kick out of that animation! I think it was the second one I did after the hero's run cycle on the very first day. Glad you like it!

amazura 2020-04-25 04:53

Awesome entry! stunning graphic & animation, love the music as well. spend a lot of time on this game, really enjoyed it:thumbsup:

marbles 2020-04-25 04:58

Very polished game. Music fits the game and the art is clean and crisp. I love the attack animation and screen shake feedback.

I found it hard since you need to go back and forth. The enemies come from the top and to be able to get a plant you must get to the bottom and bring it there one by one.

splitpainter 2020-04-25 08:41

Ok, I'm commenting again, just to say that I wanted to play the game again. You should def. move on to publish it commercially.

iamscissors 2020-04-25 20:26

I think the graphics and feel were very nice but I had some issues with the game design.

1. I think the game could benefit from seeing the entire stage, sometimes it was hard to know what I should do because I just didn't have visibility on if a plant needed watering or if I needed to find a bug to kill. 2. Hitting the enemies just felt a little... wrong. I think it would be helpful if they had a little knock back or their speed changed a bit, they just keep steam rolling through you. 3. I struggled a little bit with the jumping, sometimes I would be trying to jump and my character just wouldn't. I am not sure if there is a delay after landing where you cant jump again, or if it was something else. Regardless, I was frustrated when I missed jumps.

Overall I think the idea is amazing, but I really struggled to fully enjoy the game because of the above issues.

cileth 2020-04-25 20:45

@iamscissors thanks for playing, and thanks for the feedback!

It is difficult to manage your plants out of sight, which is part of the fun/challenge. Though, if we continue this project I would like to add some UI elements to notify players that plants are taking damage out of view. Sound queues would also be helpful. We have some sounds for when lemon trees are being attacked and the sound fades based on the distance to the tree. To go along with this I would also add more ways to navigate from top to bottom, like an unlockable teleporter or something.

Initially the melee attack had a knockback on enemies. It was way too strong, you could basically infinitely hold up a wave of enemies by knocking them back slightly (same with the melee plants). We removed the knockback and increased health scaling of enemies to combat it with the thinking that melee attacks are useful early on but lose their effectiveness as the game progresses so you would need to rely on plants to do the dirty work. We had discussed having player abilities being unlocked through the shop, but those ideas got cut midway through the jam due to scope.

I'm always looking for ways to improve the responsiveness of controls. There is a variable jump (which might be what you're experiencing) where you can control your jump height. Hold down jump to get max jump height, let go early to cut it early. In the future I would add things like input buffers and ledge forgiveness to give some leeway to pressing the jump button early/late.

royalsoup 2020-04-25 21:38

@peterfiftyfour That's basically how you beat it right now. That's what I do too. haha, we're thinking of ways to balance the gameplay so that it forces you to have a more diversified strategy. :)

ekilibr 2020-04-25 22:07

A lot of things have already been said. The game is working super smoothly, with a huge feeling of Plant vs Zombies in the mood. Animation and small camera shake on hits are really rewarding, and the loop is working well (I spent more than 15mins on the game without knowing!)

Congrats for your entry!

PS: how do you get that nuke anyway? Special cheat code? :D)

savvu 2020-04-25 22:43

Soooooo cute animations I love them! And the watering effect is awesome as well! I would love to play this one on my phone. Think about a mobile port!

francisco-lucas 2020-04-25 23:10

I played for almost 1 hour! So, the game is pretty cool! It took me a while to understand that plants killed insects. The feeling of the game is great! Everything is fine! You must continue the project and add more updates and new plans! The only thing I didn't like was the music. It's a greats songs, but it doesn't match the game. When the waves happen, the music remains calm, and the genre may not mix very well (lo-fi)

Capturar.PNG

wans24 2020-04-26 08:15

Included your game in my list) https://wans24.itch.io/he-needs-healing/devlog/140983/what-ludum-dare-46-did-to-me

alphazeba 2020-04-27 23:18

@ekilibr nope, no cheat codes. You just have to farm really hard. if you ever have money, invest it in plants, if you have too many full grown plants sell 'em and buy new plants. The fastest I've heard someone getting the nuke ending is around 16 minutes.

Thanks for playing our game!

le-don 2020-04-28 19:22

Great game! But I think the beginning is a little bit overhelming as there's much to learn and figuring out. Also as far as I could tell there's no way to regrow the trees, which is a shame, as you can only hold your position, but not "conquer" back. And I personally thought the reward for selling plants isn't big enough to bother and could be a little higher (but the idea is nice).

cileth 2020-04-28 20:34

@le-don thanks for playing! We intentionally made the first wave intermission longer so so that players could have a bit more time to explore and figure things out. We spawned 2 lemons initially on trees to hint towards that mechanic. We've had mixed feedback that the first intermission is too long and too short simultaneously, so it's pretty difficult to nail down the perfect timing without a lot of playtesting. Ideally we would have a tutorial to go over the mechanics and ramp players up smoothly.

We had discussed ways to regrow the lemon trees but ran out of time to implement it. Something like a lemon tree fertilizer you can carry up to the trees then water.

The plant selling is actually extremely overpowered and should be nerfed significantly. We're looking into other ways of making money if we continue working on this project. I wont spoil the strategy for anyone, but it is op :]

eran-haas 2020-04-29 10:40

Wonderfully fluid animation and great art. Music and sound were great as well. Really just an amazing amount of polish for a jam!

gameovermexico 2020-04-29 21:54

VERY VERY NICE!!!

joekinglake 2020-05-01 22:51

Wow, this is seriously a great entry! Really fantastic job, the movement & character are really nicely polished and the art is beautiful. I found the difficulty a little easy at first, but eventually as more enemies came into the screen i found it tough to keep up on the laptop! Great work!

euler-moises 2020-05-02 15:50

But what a cool game! I love tower defenses and you applied a very interesting mechanic. The art is very cute and well finished and the music very well done. Really enjoyed!

Congratulations!

For a good time, I recommend trying the [worldle game](https://worldlegame.io/). You have a good chance to try it right now. No matter if you are a beginner or a professional player, it will be a challenge for you. The game is very addictive and gives you pleasant emotions. There is no registration on the site, which saves time.
