LD44 — Your life is currency

Developer Story by KonH 2019-04-30T19:51:58Z

Well done. I think at a certain point, I understood what the game wanted me to do and it just became clicking really fast lol. I also didn't really see how the courses I was taking impacted what kind of job offers I was getting. Also, there didn't seem to be any winning. Just like... you have the best job and now you're just doing it. Decently enjoyable game, just would've liked a little more intricacy.

Leaving with Ladders by 100th_Coin 2019-05-01T15:13:07Z

Was looking forward to trying it, but all I've got is a pink screen with the money heart thing in the top left. I'm on Mac. any ideas?

Seed. by AVAVT 2019-05-03T04:05:16Z

I got to 4080, I was a bit unsure exactly what the aim was at first, but I realized at some point that the humans were slowly starting to fight back my growing forest. It was really enjoyable all the way through even at the point where the bulldozers were savagely cutting down the last few planted seeds I had as soon as they sprouted. Well done.

Don't Die, Dumpstercat! by Trifectuh 2019-04-30T16:12:02Z

The main issues I had with this one was that it was fairly short and it was a bit too easy to the point that I didn't need to use items. Like I could beat it with nine lives at the end pretty easily. If the items actually made the game significantly easier and the cost was less, I could see how choosing your item set would basically be like setting the difficulty. But it doesn't really work that way here. Honestly, that's a balancing issue I've seen in several games, including the one I worked on. Other than, it had decent graphics and sound and everything about it made sense, so that's definitely important.

@trifectuh Indeed, that's definitely the nature of the beast. Well done again and thanks for the reply.

Sapling by Treeboater 2019-04-30T17:45:52Z

What a journey. haha I really spent a lot of time with this game. I started with getting the feel for the mechanics. It seemed like I needed to pick the seed placements that had the most return. I was also noticing the art was very nice, simple and easy to look at and the music and audio were relaxing and high quality. I experimented with different methods, trying to branch out tons of different mini-forests, advancing one large wall of trees, etc.. it soon became apparent this game needs a zoom. I suppose you could argue though, that the lack of a zoom feature increases the likelihood that you would forget about a certain group of trees and they would die. The problem with this is that this implies that the game has any form of difficulty.. I realized at some point that you only ever received 5 seeds total in a turn which you begin receiving within a few turns of the start. It made me wonder if it mattered where I placed the seeds. It did not and I received 5 every time because I was always able to put down 5 every turn. I began to wonder if it was even possible to lose. I started trying to choose placements that would block myself off and force the trees to die. I spent a while doing this and realized that it may never happen. All in all, this was a very good attempt and it was mostly enjoyable. However, the absence of either a win or loss condition left something substantial to be desired. I would love to see this worked on more, maybe add in some catastrophic events that you would have to try to avoid and also refine the balance of seed planting/return so that the limit isn't necessary. Also, add a win condition.

@son-of-ja haha thank you. Am currently making music. :)

1929 by stev0o 2019-05-01T15:26:48Z

I liked the concept and design but the game was a bit too punishing and got frustrating. Since the car had one speed, it was basically up to chance whether you could make it to the people falling or not. I did like the mechanic of the line climbing or falling based on how many people you were saving, so that was cool but it was just weighted too much towards losing all of your money very quickly and I only made like a few dollars every round. Honestly, if you made the car just mouse movement, that would probably fix it.

The Aging Soul by bigwhiteshogun 2019-04-30T17:59:00Z

Really solid idea. Art, sound controls and all that was great. I would've liked a somewhat higher difficulty, like maybe more puzzles? Also, just wanted more levels haha. Great submission, well done.

The Messenger Assist by graebor 2020-04-23T03:09:28Z

This took me about 6 tries before I beat it. It's very short, but since it's very difficult it lasts a while since it takes a bit to figure it out. I had a lot of fun with it! Also, the graphics were insane! What the heck? lol

Vinyl Hills by MatthewPoletin 2020-04-21T02:25:29Z

Great entry! It definitely had a good difficulty level. I think if I could give a critique it would be that it was confusing to me for a moment that I just had to click on the text box and not the person who said something negative. I would've liked you to be able to click on the person and then the person would leave.

Are We There Yet by Twistashio 2020-04-23T03:45:02Z

I think the concept is good and creative, but the gameplay is not quite doing it for me. I think if I were to suggest something to improve it, I would want to be able to control my car while looking back at the kid. I also would want there to be obstacles in the middle of the road so I couldn't just go straight in the middle. Good effort though!

Turnip Turmoil by Jonas Michael 2020-04-21T01:43:42Z

Currently 7th lol, I don't know how people are getting 300k points. I wonder if the slow motion is OP? idk, all in all good game. I liked the feel of the controls and it was pretty fun. Not a huge fan of the art, but maybe just preference. I went through the tutorial but started getting bored so I kinda skipped through haha Our games seem like they were pretty similar in the core goal. If you get a chance let me know what you think of mine! Thanks

Nice! It crashes when I use Safari, but Chrome seemed to work. I love the art, the concept was pretty easy to understand, although it did take me a minute. I didn't realize until about halfway through my play that I wasn't allowed to pick up wood when the bad mushrooms were there and that the little red icon meant that they were present. But I got it eventually lol. Good work! Good sound design and everything seemed to work properly.

Fleur Defense by SamStallion 2020-04-21T19:44:33Z

@lairinlair Thank you!! I'm glad you liked the music. As I've played it a few times, it takes me about 20 mins to get to the nuke. ;P Thanks for spending as much time on it as you did! :D

@peterfiftyfour 😘

Fleur Defense by SamStallion 2020-04-25T21:38:21Z

@peterfiftyfour That's basically how you beat it right now. That's what I do too. haha, we're thinking of ways to balance the gameplay so that it forces you to have a more diversified strategy. :)

Dino spin by relixes 2020-04-23T05:28:26Z

Favorite game so far. Hands down. The dinosaur is so cute, the mechanic feels unique and engaging, the addition of coins is really nice for the completionist. I found myself stuck on level 14 because I could not make myself not collect all the coins. I think I spent more time on this game than any other. The puzzles weren't hard but I thought they were clever. I liked the part where you introduce keys and then immediately flip the point of the key to be something you need to avoid. So cool! The only critiques I could give were that dying before the egg falls into the nest seemed to be a coin toss on if it let me continue or not. Also, I liked the music but it got a little repetitive after a while. Very well done! I want more of this game haha OH! I got 36,100 :)

Remember, Apollo by AdamCYounis 2020-04-23T04:38:48Z

So yeah, That was pretty great. Definitely was a complete game. I don't think there's really anything I would change about it. It wasn't immediately apparent to me that I could click and drag from anywhere on screen so I was having a hard time with some of the flings getting enough force, but figured it out eventually. Very engaging story, sounds like it could be a book. Saw one typo somewhere lol but no biggie. Very well done!

Therapy by ZEZEL 2020-04-21T02:01:41Z

Hey there, interesting idea! I liked the concept of being a cell trying to keep someone alive. Lil Osmosis Jones action. Things I would change about it are the audio seemed to be exceptionally loud and it's crazy hard! haha maybe just have the timer be longer. I only got to the third checkpoint :'( If you get a moment, check out my game! I'd love to get some critical feedback. :D

Don't Kill Death (Or Die Trying) by MadeByChaz 2020-04-23T04:21:08Z

Story exposition, art, audio were all awesome. I felt like the main gameplay favored spawning souls in a corner and running into them as they ran toward you, which got a little old. Seems like something needs to be added to force you to have to move around the level. But then the prices for the upgrades would be pretty staggering. Good job on this game! Just needs some tweaking I think.

Scrappalooza TV [LD46] by Coord 2020-04-21T01:29:36Z

Seemed like a cool idea! I think probably the biggest critique I would have are the controls and the fact that you basically stop if you go off the road. I think slowing is a good idea because it forces you to employ some skill, maybe just too intense as it is and it became frustrating. If you're able, I'd love it if you checked out my game and left a comment :D

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

1st / 3rd Last Word by ketura 2018-04-26T02:02:09Z

The concept seemed interesting. But I'm not sure it translated into fun. The exhilarating thing about a shooter is that you're in the action. I just felt like I was watching someone else play a game even though it was me. The graphics were kinda simple but that's to be expected in a game jam. Also, I glitched through a wall and fell out of the map. All in all, I would say a good effort but it didn't really make me want to try more.
