Okay I am a bit confused I think you planned more gameplay but still. What I really loved: graphics real PS1 vibe and great mood. Can't say much about gameplay unfortunately but you delivered, good job.

splitpainter 2020-04-21 11:02

@maksym you are right. Planned a lot of gameplay, but I spent most of the time scripting and animating the intro and outro. In the end it is a short movie, more than a game. Thanks for playing and rating :)

randomhuman 2020-04-21 13:18

Nice and moody, but I wasn't really sure what was going on to be honest! As you said, more of a movie than a game, and maybe a bit too much lore to explore in a jam. I struggle with that a lot myself in the ideas I have for jams.

splitpainter 2020-04-21 13:50

@randomhuman I think every time I participate in Ludum Dare I come up with very long lores and stories and no gameplay. I have another account which I lost access too and the games are also all movies/narratives haha. Thanks for playing, btw!

megamasterx 2020-04-21 14:53

I am thoroughly blown away with how well this looks and how this turned out! I do agree that this lacks a little in the gameplay department but this entry honestly left me wanting to see what this would look like with some more work, polish, and solid core gameplay around it. Kudos!!

splitpainter 2020-04-21 14:57

@megamasterx thank you! I plan to keep working on it to do a post-jam version and implement all ideas I had.

chocolat-endive 2020-04-21 15:12

Really enjoyed this ~~game~~ interactive movie! There's a real mood here, and the old school graphics+music works really well.

I think I would enjoy a kind of contemplative and narrative game with this style. I won't rate it on the "fun" part but everything else is fine for me! Good job.

thebeka 2020-04-21 15:34

Oh great now I miss my ps1 :D love the stype and mood. well done!

splitpainter 2020-04-21 16:37

@chocolat-endive thanks :) My idea was to provide some atmosphere in that way, glad that you felt it :)

@thebeka thank you!

luke-perkin 2020-04-21 17:05

That was something... I was certainly gripped while watching it so I think you get full points for mood haha. Also that synth sound was *chefs kiss*.

kevin-meissner 2020-04-21 18:11

I was just confused and also feelt a bit fooled XD.

eyesoflamia 2020-04-21 18:13

Very interesting entry! Definitely getting the HL vibes, but with different and more philosophical themes. Really cool!

toxichouse 2020-04-21 18:14

I never had a PS1, but i really enjoy the style.

The kaiju's design is my favorite.

How did you guys painted and maped such a pixelated texture? In Blender?

splitpainter 2020-04-21 18:16

@luke-perkin thank you! I loved that you considered the sounds chefs kiss hahah!

@kevin-meissner thanks for the feedback. Love seeing the different reactions. May I ask why did you feel fooled?

@eyesoflamia I wrote a big poem for the lore, but unfortunately couldn't fit into the game. Thank you!

@toxichouse thank you! Glad you enjoyed. The Kaiju texture was tricky for me. It is basically 6 different textures of rocks, grounds, grass, etc, scaled down to 128px then strecthed to 512px, creating that mood and look of something organic.

splitpainter 2020-04-21 18:29

@toxichouse and of course, I forgot to mention, that then I UV mapped the texture individually to each body segment. Probably 2h doing that.

gamechoy 2020-04-21 19:08

I really dug the PS1 style graphics and music! Seems like the original idea was very ambitious, it might be a good idea to create the gameplay first and then move on to making the more cinematic aspects. Remember you can always add story and lore after the jam (since there are no categories for these haha). I'd be interested to see you work on this more and get closer to your original vision, nice job!

max-louis 2020-04-21 19:09

Wow that was unique - I love it :D I really like the camera movement, I can see that would have taken lots of work. Great work on the little touches like the warp camera effect :)

splitpainter 2020-04-21 19:12

@gamechoy good points about lore and story not counting for the jam. I really want to do a gameplay focused game next time. But I always end up making narratives, lol! Thanks for the feedback and for playing!

@max-louis Glad that you liked it :) Thank you!

daidiimon 2020-04-21 19:13

What a sick aesthetic! Mood was soooooo good! Like others said, might have dropped the ball a little on the game side of things, but this is such a cool thing! Would love to see a more developed version of it :)

devastus 2020-04-21 19:13

An atmospheric interactive movie! I like the retro graphics style and the sound design make the overall tone very eerie. It's a shame that it's kinda missing all gameplay though (you could basically leave out all the space-presses as it is), a narrative-driven game in this style would be interesting indeed.

Well done!

splitpainter 2020-04-21 19:34

@daidiimon thank you! I was too optimistic about the scope and ended up hit by the time limit, so no time for the gameplay :(

@devastus thank you! I plan to develop it further and maybe even turn it into a completely diferent game, specially the Kaiju model, which I loved so much. Btw, your game was very very chill!

nazorus 2020-04-21 19:46

Very intriguing game, I love the mood and graphical style. I can feel there has been a lot of effort in the cinematic aspect and atmosphere of the game. Thanks for sharing!

rakowu 2020-04-21 20:07

Dude that was stunning. For a second i totally forgot that it was just a jam game. And the first thing i thoungt was "uh ps1 game" after that a read your description xD. Really impressive but i wished there would been more. Also really intense mood.

I am a sucker for more contemplative games / visual experiences, and this one is definitely one of the best I have seen in a Ludum Dare. Some of the shots / camerawork had a quality I was definitely not expecting in a gamejam. You totally nailed that otherworldly aesthetic. I look forward to seeing more experiences like this from you. One of my favourites, awesome work !

redhermit 2020-04-21 22:14

Great camera work! Model and the rigging was fantastic too, and you nailed the PS1 & HL vibe you were going for! It was an enjoyable experience!

730 2020-04-22 00:36

Not gonna talk about gameplay since obviously you didn't get to do that, but great graphics and the cinematic stuff and camera changes are very cool too. I would definitely like to know the full story for this, especially since I'm a turbo weeb, though my knowledge of buddhism is very thin. I'd say to really get to the PSX aesthetic it needed some more stuff, but understandably that must be very hard to do in 3 days, especially in Godot where there aren't any pre-existent fancy PSX graphics plugins and such. I think it could've used some more models and stuff lying around (maybe more floating islands?), it was quite empty, though enough to be presentable.

splitpainter 2020-04-22 04:39

@nazorus thank you! Oh yeah, that camera took me hours and hours, eating the time that I would invest in the gameplay.

@rakowu awesome that you felt it :D Thank you!

@jlv KAOA [intense pause] MARU! Thank you! So it seems it was worth it investing 6 to 8h scripting the camera movements :)

@redhermit Thank you!

@730 thank you! I had the PSX shaders ready, but there wasn't time to make sure they would look good all connected. Also, I modeled 6 islands designs (factory, war, city, etc) which would make more sense for that intro (I.e. "Over-populated... Exhausted...") and human models with animations, but no time left to put in game too xD

m3mz 2020-04-22 05:44

ABSOLUTELY. AMAZING. One of the best i've played yet! The ambience was amazing and I loved the PS1 style graphics. I have no idea how you managed to do this much in such a short time. Great job!

morel-8 2020-04-22 05:50

What an efforts! it was amazing to see such motion art. You have great potential) Thank you for game experience)

aj-jones 2020-04-22 06:09

I like that you made something different than many of the submissions, whole aesthetic was really cool!

virtuaworlds 2020-04-22 06:14

Really great looking game, although I'm not sure what I was supposed to do or what the gameplay would be. Quite psychedelic and abstract and artistic so I enjoyed it for those aspects. Love the vibe and mood you set, would love more information about the world and story.

pomo 2020-04-22 06:16

And here I was thinking my game was weird, yet you beated me by a landslide on that aspect! Good job.

splitpainter 2020-04-22 06:29

@m3mz @morel-8 @aj-jones thank you!

@virtuaworlds thank you! Planned a lot of gameplay, you would have to basically energize the mountain with smaller Kaijus (see the crystal at the top of the mountain). But working alone is tough to do all of this stuff from scratch, so I focused on the lore and movie aspect of it.

@arthurds I think you still won on the weirdness aspect xD (which is a good thing, IMO).

amerigo-gazaway 2020-04-22 06:35

Wow super impressive, love the PS1 oldschool aesthetic and feel. Great work here!

bluecalx 2020-04-22 09:57

Reminded me of LSD on PS1! Loved the atmosphere it really feels like some weird nightmare. Mood is on point and world's emptiness really fits the short storyline. Looking forward the total annihilation planned by the Planet Keeper. Some camera movements in the intro feels a bit awkward because of its speed though.

axkarth 2020-04-22 11:43

The mood is great and it reminds me of Nintendo DS graphics.

azagaya 2020-04-22 12:28

Great Narrative Game! With a very drastic message, i liked it! PS1 style is always great. Nice job! I'm going to read the postmortem now.

splitpainter 2020-04-22 12:32

@amerigo-gazaway @bluecalx @axkarth thank you!

@bluecalx if you remember which one, can you tell me which one was fast? So I can adjust.

@azagaya thank you! There is no post-jam version yet. Probably will take me some additional days :) What I have done, is published the Post Mortem (which includes some notes about Godot and Blender): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/kaoamaru-kaiju/kaoamaru-a-dark-atmospheric-narrative-ps1-like-post-mortem-1

kevin-meissner 2020-04-22 12:36

@splitpainter I felt a bit fooled because I expected some kind of interaction or choise and then It endet with the sentence game ending 1 of 1. ^^ But I guess you just did not have the time for more.

jbdev 2020-04-22 12:42

The aesthetic is awesome!! It reminded me of my Sega Saturn games!

kamekai 2020-04-22 12:42

Right from the bat I love the surreal cinematography and world building. Barren floating landscapes with a strange symmetry... very ominous and I immediately wanted to know more. Nice job easing your shots and playing with the depth of field, too. It has an exaggerated, spacey quality to it.

The creature model is really cool, has a bit of a creepy legendary Pokemon vibe to it. All in all, despite the short narrative it had an attractive cohesion and the sparseness of the design left much to be desired in the best way possible; the short glimpse into the universe you crafted raises so many questions I'd like to see answered.

animaster 2020-04-22 13:01

Looks really cool, i want to learn godot even more now

curleysam 2020-04-22 15:38

Wow very moody! LOVE the art style, really interesting to look at  Would be interested to see where you would expand upon this next but hey ho it's a game jam  The design of the kaiju was cool! Very Final Fantasy esque and the environment reminded me a lot of Skies of Arcadia. Very well done making something so moody and pretty in such a short time  👍👍👍

kiririn51 2020-04-22 15:57

Love the mood of this one. Pretty neat and tight narrative experience, the mood is very zen and made me interested in this world. The graphics remind me a bit of panzer dragoon saga!

duke 2020-04-22 17:30

Interesting... but a bit overwhelming and confusing. Was there any gameplay or was it basically just a cinematic? I liked the idea of the aesthetics and the Lovecraftian mood.

robotsandmuffins 2020-04-22 17:35

Completly agree with others. Graphics impact you some how...Love them. I feel cinematics a little bit long. But may be it's becouse you couldn't finish it. Impacted is the word...Nice!

laserpanzerwal 2020-04-22 18:49

I am not really sure what happened there, but it was interesting. As you seem to have planned multiple endings and all I did was press space twice, I assume you wanted the game to have multiple choices the player could make by pressing certain keys. Maybe you want to release a post-jam version with the missing features included, I would certainly check it out. I like the PS1 style (and its a great graphics style to go for if you're working alone because it saves time while it pleases everyone who is old enough to value it  ), I'm not sure if you implemented a shader for the "wobbly" polygons, if yes it was very subtle and could have been more obvious just to add to the PSX feel. **Also: thumbs up for providing a linux version**, most people here unfortunately don't even if they use engines that can export those with minimum effort.

annie-owl 2020-04-22 21:31

I really hope you make more endings, because you grabbed my attention with this world and monster design

kamekai 2020-04-22 23:44

@laserpanzerwal the wobbliness in textures and polygons present in the PS1 was due to a lack of floating point precision. It seems like Kaoamaru Kaiju is using floating point and not fixed, just guessing based on the smoothness of everything. Perhaps something else is going on there!

flomino 2020-04-23 01:37

this is awesome. there isnt really any gameplay though which really disappointed me. the graphics are awesome, im a sucker for the ps1 look. the story is intriguing and the creature's design is cool. i would be really excited to see more from this game, perhaps with a bit more interactivity.

alphazeba 2020-04-23 03:21

dang ,this is heckin pretty. no gameplay, but i'd say 'worth it'

royalsoup 2020-04-23 03:21

I want the full game haha

jake-marks 2020-04-23 05:41

I wish this was a real game. The art and concept are SO intriguing. I don't know if any of my questions would be answered in the gameplay though, haha!

i like that visual style! )

crazyrems 2020-04-23 08:39

The MacOS version doesn’t want to launch. The same happened to me, it looks like it’s an issue with Catalina. You have to find a way to export a .dmg file. I’ll take time to test it later today on my PC.

szkocka 2020-04-23 12:53

Expected little more of a game in the game  but otherwise cool idea with the narration, nice stylized graphics and animations. I believe there were more planned, but timelimit made you cut stuff out :C

death-is-cold 2020-04-23 16:35

looks relly cool, but as you've heard already not much gameplay. good job!

deathstorm 2020-04-23 17:45

What an interesting experiment.

It really had the vibes of PlayStation 1. After that what I saw.

Please tell us what are teh other mechanics and the endings you planned. Iam really interesting in it and totally curious.

Well Done. An Awesome piece of Art, I would call it :)

mrchippy 2020-04-23 20:25

Loved the floating island.

Xen in half-life was the first thing to come to mind when I saw this. The song also had a very unsettling mood which worked well.

Of course there isn't much going on but what is is all really good.

chambre19 2020-04-24 03:30

I really liked this, it was a nice little game with some nostalgic graphics. Honestly the PS1 graphics were the first thing that brought me here.

See you next Ludum Dare! Keep up the good work.

ursagames 2020-04-24 04:49

marcusnystrand 2020-04-24 08:46

Well this sure brings me back to the good old PS1 times. Really nice aesthetics, very memorable. Great job!

dextreon 2020-04-24 11:21

This is a very interesting and intriguing game! It reminds me of psx games and I love that! The gameplay and the visuals were cool, congrats for this awesome entry!!

drevilbrain 2020-04-25 05:40

Always wanted to make something in the PS1 aesthetic. I read through your post-mortem (really cool stuff btw). Is there any further insights in how someone would go about trying to make something like the PS1? I don't have much experience in 3D modelling, rigging, or animating though.

splitpainter 2020-04-25 08:45

@kevin-meissner Fair enough :) I'm sorry for the "ending 1 of 1", that was a placeholder for multiple endings and I did not remove it when building the game.

@jbdev thank you! That was the idea :) Even although I didn't have time to plug the distortion shader.

@kamekai wow, that's a very detailed feedback - thank you! - _the short glimpse into the universe you crafted raises so many questions I’d like to see answers_: I'll try to answer those in a post-jam version, if I ever finish it. - _The creature model is really cool, has a bit of a creepy legendary Pokemon vibe to it._: what a cool perspective. I never thought about that, it makes total sense. My main inspiration is Final Fantasy VII, japanese movies and Silent Hill.

You are also right about the wobbly texture, @kamekai: I didn't implement the PSX Shader for that, but mostly for lack of time.

@animaster do it :) Godot is quite straightforward and very lightweight.

@curleysam thank you! _Very Final Fantasy esque and the environment reminded me a lot of Skies of Arcadia_: You got it :) It's inspired from FF7 Ruby and Diamond weapons (+ Castle of The Sky Laputa). I'll check Skies of Arcadia. Edited: I checked Skies of Arcadia and wow, my game feels like it in terms of the floating islands indeed. I feel like playing that game now.

@kiririn51 Whoa thanks for bringing up Panzer Dragoon, quite an honour that it reminded you of that! I was inspired by FF7, Silent Hill and Studio Ghibli, but it great to hear it bringing other sources.

@duke Sorry that you felt that way. I planned adding gameplay, but then I spent all my jam time doing the 3D stuff, making music and scripting the cinematics (bulk of the work was in the intro and outro). So you can see it is quite not a good idea to work on lore and cutscenes in jam games :dog: I think maybe if I had a team, this game would still be out of scope for the jam.

@laserpanzerwal thank for the detailed feedback. - _ I assume you wanted the game to have multiple choices the player could make by pressing certain keys._: I actually planned "real" gameplay, with 3rd person controllers, etc. But doing everything alone in a game with such a big scope and production value is really hard, plus doing all from scratch - it was a dumb choice from my side.

I actually finished the Kaiju, including rigging and animations Saturday, so I could have used it to go straight to implement gameplay. But then I decided to play around with the intro and ending and when I saw it was late Monday

- _ great graphics style to go for if you’re working alone because it saves time while it pleases everyone who is old enough to value it_: yes, it seems to be working :) Also it is the style that I know how to do the best, specially due to UV Unwrapping. - _ I’m not sure if you implemented a shader for the “wobbly” polygons_, unfortunately I didn't, because Godot would require me to changing EVERY material in the models. I have to find a way to add wobbly PSX shader to the screen itself. - _Also: thumbs up for providing a linux version_: cheers! I use Linux at work, so I know the feeling.

@flomino thank you and glad that you dig the visuals :) In next Ludum Dares I plan to keep the same visual style, it is what I do best regarding game art. I still plan to do a post-jam version with gameplay, 3rd person controller, etc. But even a post-jam still feels out of scope. The idea is too big.

@alphazeba thank you!

@royalsoup I'm planning the post-jam version :) Still a lot of work left, tho!

@jake-marks thanks for playing on your stream! As for full game, lots of stuff planned, little to no time left in the game, and for a post-jam version, still a lot of work hehe.

splitpainter 2020-04-25 08:57

@xart2012 thank you :)

@crazyrems I re-exported for OS X, maybe it will work now. Please let me know :)

@death-is-cold @szkocka thank you. It was tough enough to do everything from scratch and all those cinematics, and then no time left for the gameplay, ironically. I'm planning a post-jam version where I implement the planned gameplay, but still a lot of work to do. Too big of qscope for a jam game, by 1 person, all done from scratch

@deathstorm thank you! Gameplay would be as follows: 1. A hidden statue in each island, with different sizes. The size of the statue reflects the size of the Kaiju in that island (tho they are 1/50th of the size of the main Kaiju which is 540 meters tall). 1. A meditation command sequence would raise a statue in an island. 1. The smaller Kaiju of that island would be controllable. With that Kaiju, you would kill humans and explode buildings, charging up. 1. After charging up, you would shoot a ray at Mount Kaoamaru, to keep charging the Maount red gem. 1. After 3 smaller Kaijus, you could play the sequence to raise the main Kaiju and finish the game, even although not being the _true ending_. 1. But you could charge 6 Kaijus (all islands) to fully charge Mount Kaoamaru and give full power to the main Kaiju, effectively destroying everything in the world, to clean it up. 1. The secret ending would be protecting the monk temple with a different medidation sequence, but that would still not be the true ending. The true ending is the monks dying as well. Nothing can be alive to keep the planet alive.

splitpainter 2020-04-25 09:11

@mrchippy thank you! You captured the idea well :)

@ursagames thank you for playing it on the stream!

@marcusnystrand @chambre19 @dextreon thank you! I plan to keep making games with this kind of aesthetic in the upcoming Ludum Dares and Game Jams in general. Follow me here or https://twitter.com/SplitPainter if you want to see more!

fabula-rasa 2020-04-25 11:23

As it is now, it doesn't feel like a game. It feels more like a short-form movie and as such it has an Aronofsky vibe to it, but is much too short to convey its message well. Visuals and the music are suitably disturbing for the general theme you are going for (as I understand it, at least). Now you just need some game in your game

splitpainter 2020-04-25 11:29

@fabula-rasa thanks! I had to Google "Aronofsky" and I realized I have watched none of his movies. Which one do you recommend me that has similar vibe to this? I'm curious now, would love to watch it.

I updated the game page with detailed planned gameplay elements - as you can see, quite huge scope for one person. By Saturday I had the art done, if I focused the remaining days doing those mechanics instead of the cinematic, I would have done the game in the game - without the cinematics.

splitpainter 2020-04-25 11:35

HTML 5 / Web version added! With full screen support as well (Chrome and Firefox support).

james-7777 2020-04-25 11:39

Really great atmosphere and love the PS1 aesthetic. Unfortunately it doesn't really have gameplay but a fun experience nonetheless! Nice work!

fabula-rasa 2020-04-25 11:42

@splitpainter I recommend both Pi and Requiem for a Dream, Fountain in a lesser extent. Don't get me wrong, this is not the same theme, just vibe :). I think Pi is the one that especially came to my mind when I was watching yours.

splitpainter 2020-04-25 11:55

@fabula-rasa I just watched two Pi trailers and I can definitely see what you mean now - the first seconds I already felt the vibe, due to the sound effects and music. I'll try to find those movies and watch them. It's my kind of stuff. Thanks for recommending!

fabula-rasa 2020-04-25 12:58

@splitpainter You're welcome! Enjoy :). I'm always happy to spread good cinema around.

gamer-fates 2020-04-25 15:30

Thanks for the entry. Enjoyed the "experience". Wish there was some actual gameplay. Love the PS1 inspired graphics!

legavroche 2020-04-25 17:56

Loved the ps1 style graphics, really brought me back to my childhood. Gameplay left a lot more to be desired, but I know you have a lot planned for the post-jam version, so I eagerly await that. I liked the route that you went with, and would love to revisit it in the future!

francisco-lucas 2020-04-25 19:03

I liked the graphics and the beauty of the camera animations! It is even scary. It's a good visual experience

madalaski 2020-04-25 20:28

Definitely reminded me of the Weapons from the original Final Fantasy VII. Gave me a sense of awe while playing but obviously there's no much in the way of gameplay. Still what's there is still impressive with a lot of great graphic design and sound work. I'm glad I went through this "visual experience"

fabian-g 2020-04-25 21:06

Very interesting, nice style

eran-haas 2020-04-25 21:21

Looks fantastic! I really love the ps1 look! Are you doing anything special with shaders/post, or is it all in the textures?

tom-robson 2020-04-25 23:03

I absolutely adore the PS1 style of graphics, it's one of my all time favorites (both to look at and work with!) - so seeing an entry with that style was great!

I had read a comment or two going in about the lack of gameplay, so with my expectations set accordingly, I really enjoyed this little scene! I'll keep an eye out for any future update you might do, since reading over your plans and such I think it could make for something really quite unique!

kamekai 2020-04-26 02:38

@splitpainter regarding a post-jam being too big given the scope of potential for worldbuilding, perhaps this world would be best explored in segmented, one-off glimpses into the universe, so that you don't have to commit to a single game for a long time. You can experiment with style, gameplay, anything really, slowly building on this seed you've planted. One small story at a time. You might eventually cobble together a vision for something larger.

francisco-lucas 2020-04-26 02:58

bereg 2020-04-26 09:58

The retro look and sound made me think of cutscenes from old games. The first time you play, it's a little bit confusing, but when you realize that you can't (and more importantly you don't have to) decide anything, it's becoming a great experience. What I like is that you didn't try to follow any tropes, you just created something new and atmospheric.

gimblll 2020-04-26 12:24

I feel like I'm in a 90's cyberpunk dream. What a trip!

scott-steffes 2020-04-26 13:09

Makes me think of the original N64 Evangelion game.

I absolutely love the graphics and atmosphere. Would look cool on an old CRT TV

renrok 2020-04-26 15:29

An interesting approach!

The graphics look cool. It is visible that you put a lot of work and passion in them. I really like the colors, especially the contrast between the red of the sky and the blue of the mountain.

The camerawork was dizzying at times. When you don't have to convey extreme action, I feel like it's better to keep the camera speeds slow and stable.

Not a lot of gameplay, but I think it has potential. Could be a cool trippy narrative experience.

Keep it up!

munmungames 2020-04-27 09:20

Cool experience, love the psx graphics, the character design and the audio ! Congrats

trigueiro 2020-04-27 10:24

Very different from what is normally seen here on LD. I enjoyed very much the innovation and the fresh "new breath" and actually got curious to see more, ie, the other endings  Nice Job!

moritz-jaeger 2020-04-28 13:07

Really interesting concept! Love the ps1-esque graphics and the audio. Was less of a game and more of a experience. I'm looking forward to play it again when you added some more gameplay to it :)

Other than the lack of gameplay, my only criticism would be that the camera was moving a bit too fast in the cutscenes for my taste.

PS: Thanks for rating our kaiju game as well, sorry for the bad controls, we also had a hard time finishing it in time, so had to compromise on wonky autoaim :P

sibi 2020-04-30 19:34

Brilliant PS1 era graphics! This definitely hit the nostalgia spot! Unfortunate that you didn't manage to finish the mechanics in time for the jam but it's still a nice experience and proof of concept. Would love to see more of these types of experimental games on here :)

splitpainter 2020-04-30 20:45

@james-7777 @gamer-fates thank you!

@legavroche thank you :) You can follow me here or Twitter https://twitter.com/SplitPainter to keep an eye for the upcoming progress :)

@francisco-lucas valeu! Interessante que você achou assustador em algum aspecto também :) Em termos de atmosfera, acho que nada bate o seu jogo - ele ficou animal!!!

@madalaski you are totally right about the FFVII inspirations, specially Ruby and Diamond Weapons. Glad that the game could awe you :)

frank-gevaerts 2020-05-02 15:52

Graphics and audio are really nice, even though I didn't play any of the systems or games you were referring to :)

2020-05-04 16:54

Interesting game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/NFvpzo131Hc

kjscott 2020-05-06 07:36

The audio was really good and brought a great amount of mood to the whole thing, it was short and would have definitely have been improved by your planned additional endings. I read through and seems like it would have provided some interesting variations to see.

splitpainter 2020-05-06 13:16

@eran-haas It is all in the textures, stretched down to 256 or 512px, no filtering. I didn't have time to place the wobble PSX shader. And thank you!

@kjscott @sibi @trigueiro @munmungames @tom-robson @fabian-g thank you!

@bereg thanks! You are completely right on that :) My first step when making it was coming with something from scratch, something that has never been done before.

@gimblll haha cool! That's an interesting take "90’s cyberpunk dream"

@scott-steffes > Makes me think of the original N64 Evangelion game Interesting comparison. I didn't play Evangelion back then, but I just watched a video and I can def. see similarities.

@guyunger thank you! A CRT shader was planned, but yet, no time :(

@moritz-jaeger @wavewava thank you! To be honest the camera in some places still annoys me a lot, but I spent basically 1 day doing the cinematics and there was no time left to fine tune it.

@frank-gevaerts thank you! The systems are not in place in this version, they were planned, but will come probably IF I finish the post-jam version hehe :)

@jupiter-hadley thanks a lot for playing it and publishing on your channel!

convg 2020-05-06 16:40

Nice! I love the PS1 style graphics and would love to see the planned features implemented.

vernalbehemoth 2020-05-06 18:36

To come up with something truly unique like this is an absolutely immense skill! It is hugely rare to find something so intriguing to play not just in these jams but also generally.

If you did all this on your own then that is huge! Well done, I would love to see what you could do with a few developers supporting your art.

Thanks for a unique experience and a story that I would love to see more of!

I salute your massive ambitions within the time frame of this jam, you gotta push the boundaries sometimes :)

matootsy 2020-05-08 02:23

I love the idea of many different endings. The introduction is well made (Camera movement a bit rigid, but it give a nice presentation of the space). This interactive story is very well in the theme and I love the mood and the purpose. I didn't understand what else to do than pressing spacebar when it was asked for it. But it's a nice atmosphere, and that's enough.

akitl 2020-05-08 13:40

unique

joaog 2020-05-08 18:45

I don't know how it would look if you had managed to do everything you planned but as far as I could see it is great! The quiet background music is very good, the art is simple and beautiful. Good job! Thank you for not giving up and sending the game, although not everything goes as planned, it happens.

clipper 2020-05-10 11:25

For a fan of ps1 and silent hill, this one was a blast. Though more interactive film than a game, still was pretty neat experience. Very well thought and made! I hope to see you continue the project.

philstrahl 2020-05-11 01:33

Instant PS1 nostalgia from seeing those huge unfiltered texels! <3 Sadly it wasn't much of a game, but I definitely got a lot of Silent Hill vibes from the presentation, and a little Final Fantasy from the huge cannon. As you said, you ran out of time of making a game out of it, but what's there is icryptic and yet intriguing :) Here's my stream from last week featuring the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUmP-nl1pVw

splitpainter 2020-05-11 09:20

@convg thank you!

@vernalbehemoth thank you for the kind words and for the awesome feedback! Yes, I did all by myself. I expect to release a mini-documentary next week! I captured every moment.

> with a few developers supporting your art.

I agree with you :) For the next Ludum Dare, I'd love to focus on art + music and have someone else developing.

splitpainter 2020-05-11 09:35

@matootsy thank you! I spent a whole day doing the camera, and then there wasn't time to make it smoother. Also, the 2 times space bar is the only "gameplay" implemented :)

@akitl thank you!

@joaog thank you for the nice feedback :) I agree with you, submitting something is already a victory! For this one I went totally nuts on the scope, but I'm happy with the narrative result.

@clipper thank you!

@philstrahl thank for the feedback for playing it live!

> and a little Final Fantasy from the huge cannon

You got it :) FFVII Ruby + Diamond weapons + Junon cannon scene were the biggest inspirations!

jf-composer 2020-05-12 16:34

Very interesting! Felt like a weird dream! And definitely got the FFVII references. Started with "Monks can hear the cry of the planet" and when I saw the Weapon like character I was like "I see what you did here" with a big smile! Really loved the PSX graphics also! GG!

mircea123 2020-05-12 17:09

Kind of no game at all, but ok.
