SLIMES!

A really nice take on the theme!

The game controls well, like really well (I didn't feel frustrated while controling the missile, but there still was a small challenge to controlling it! :3)! It looks nice, and the music (it really fits the "saving the world by shooting missiles into space" theme lol uwu and sound effects are great!

The animation when you click on the play button is really smooth (I'm saying that because it kind of caught me off guard, I love it a lot :3c)

I would recommand maybe making so that you can speed up the text (by pressing space for example), as I found it pretty slow (I'm a fast reader I guess)

(Also, smart way taking the word slimes and making it into a Super Long-range Interception Meteor Elimination Systems ;3)

I like it!

pastelgames 2020-04-21 06:29

itch link is broken :(

sver 2020-04-21 06:30

Really nice graphic! Took me a bit to get used to the controls. Was real fun to play ;)

vawer 2020-04-21 06:31

Wow!

This was really polished and super fun. I died at around 7 minutes on my first go when it was already super hectic and I was wondering if it was even possible to survive 10, but the super satisfying missile control system just kept me trying until I did it. Really good job on this one, I loved it!

sarok 2020-04-21 06:33

Congrats for your first jam! You did great!

yoshify 2020-04-21 06:37

@pastelgames It should be working now, I forgot to make the draft public!

welby 2020-04-21 06:38

I really love this one. Really simple missile game that's well executed and has cute slimes! When that SMART Missile kicks in it feels so good. 5's across the board.

timetravelhamster 2020-04-21 06:39

This game is very good, nice graphics and sound good animations and feedback on player. Only one think i got problem is that the cursor is to dark and can't see it sometimes and crash my rockets on planet. Otherwise very nice game thank you.

mypalmike 2020-04-21 06:42

Love the idea. Great job! Not sure if it was just me but the cursor was really hard to see on the web version, making it hard to play.

yoshify 2020-04-21 06:44

@mypalmike It's not just you, it does appear to be significantly darker on the Web version. I'm going to rebuild it with the reticle brightened in hopes it alleviates the issue. Thank you!

pro 2020-04-21 06:45

This is a great game! Combines strategy with actually playing the game it took me a while to find the strategy to beat the game i like it

hastro 2020-04-21 06:48

That was heaps of fun! Got to about 6 mins then it just got insane. Super satisfying missile control mechanic nice job. My main issue was that I kept losing track of my cursor - when things got hectic it made me difficult to buy new items since I couldn't find my mouse. Other than that a great little game!

pagetb 2020-04-21 06:52

I think its very very good for first try

theozonebe 2020-04-21 06:57

Wow, great game for a first try. Clean art, interesting mechanics, great fun!

greenfly 2020-04-21 06:57

I like the idea of keeping a slime world alive. The controls are satisfying - flying those missles around. Though, the "missle incoe" overlay was irridating and I couldn't see the meteor under it some times. It gets really hard, especially if you lose slimes early in game. I loved it and enjoyed the colorful slimes and their souls flying away after dying.

zebraatomica 2020-04-21 07:02

I really liked the game but my problem was that most of the time i couldn't see the aim and just played on feel... I'm Colorblind.

finn-tr 2020-04-21 07:04

Really cool game! I think this have a lot of potential. I would suggest making the mouse cursor more visible because it quite hard to detect in the dark background but overall great job!!

yoshify 2020-04-21 07:04

Thank you very much for the incredible feedback everyone - It's really satisfying seeing 3 days hard work pay off!

I've uploaded a new WebGL build that has a far more visible reticle, I'm unsure as to why it was nearly invisible compared to the Windows standalone version, but this fix should do the trick.

luddegodofpain 2020-04-21 07:06

At this point im just watching the fireworks Absolutely stunning graphics, fun too! slimes.png

slotha 2020-04-21 07:07

Nice Game! Really fun! I played it for longer than I am willing to admit, (I know it wasn't tested) but it started to really slow down after 15 mins and the sound I turned off at about 5 mins because it got out of control! I might come back and play it later though!

2020-04-21 07:22

The game was super fun and after going at it for a few runs I managed to beat the game! At a certain point I was able to build a ring of supression satelites around the planet to block out all asteroids.

yoshify 2020-04-21 07:34

@hivenation Yeah, the suppression satellites may be a little imbalanced in comparison to the others. I’ll balance them when I add more to the game outside of LD 😅

poboy 2020-04-21 07:35

Fun game :) I reached the same conclusion as the other commenters, that the ring of suppression satellites ultimately makes the game play itself. screen1.png

It did take me a few tries to figure out the strategy so it's got some depth for a 72 hour game. Nice work, I'm a fan.

travis-hermant 2020-04-21 07:36

This is really great. The first few minutes feel like it'll be a slow paced game of picking off individual meteors, but eventually all hell breaks loose. If this was expanded I could see myself sinking a good number of hours into it, I'm really quite surprised how polished this is. It did take me a minute to realize what the "smart missile radius" was about as I was thinking it was an explosive radius and was wondering why my missile would stop listening to me. Oh also I read that warning about the after 10 minutes being very hard, so I let it run for 46 minutes now and it doesn't really seem to have scaled up much more (if you wanted to know), but I do have a cool 1.5 million.

yoshify 2020-04-21 07:45

@travis-hermant that would likely be the safety net I added that makes it so meteor’s cannot be spawned any less than 0.1 seconds apart. I added this towards the end as large spawns would very quickly crash your game lol.

If you want a challenge, hit ctrl+shift+D and modify the “safety net” values from 0.1 and 0.5 to something more like 0.0 and 0.2 😅

jrd 2020-04-21 07:56

Really interesting take on a tower defense game. A lot of strategy is needed at the start. While I feel like the difficulty spikes pretty fast around 5 minutes in or so, that is what makes this addicting. I found most success in spamming auto missile launchers until the game plays itself 15 minutes in. Great game!

tsugumi 2020-04-21 08:01

It's great! I thought it was a simple shooting game until I found an upgrade button. which is great so the game turns out to have some sort of strategy in it. Well done!

william-nomikos 2020-04-21 09:18

I had a bunch of fun with this. The missile flying felt real fun. It was very satisfying to watch the line be drawn between the missile and the meteor. Blowing up meteors also felt quite fun. The screen shake and effects really built this mechanic. I also loved how the upgrades felt powerful. With each upgrade, the benefits of the upgrade were clear.

The player conveyance of this was also spectacular. I could clearly see when I did something good, or when I screwed up. I was also able to learn the game very quickly. The core mechanic easy to understand yet fun. Once I got the game down, it was simply a matter of mastering it.

The one thing I wish was expanded upon was meteor selection. There were big and small meteors, but I wish meteors had more effects. The game did successfully get harder over time, which kept me playing. I believe that with more obstacle selection, the game could be more captivating than it already is.

This is impressive for a few days of work. I had fun with this, great job! :)

olafstromberg 2020-04-21 12:16

Very good fun and simple premise. I enjoyed how it seemed to escalate very quickly.

2020-04-21 16:38

I might be a little biased about this game because i watched you make it from scratch. But I just wanted to make a comment on how proud I am of you! Not only did you nail this game it's addicting as heck. The amount of work you put into this game amazed me and how many ideas you put out there and came up with was just crazy given you made this game off the top of your head in 3 days. I'm so heckin proud of you for pulling this off and the execution of the game is amazing. I enjoyed playing this game and it's addicting and pretty much the style of game I play:'). 3 sleepless days it took to you to create this game and watching you pull it off has made me the proudest girlfriend ever. I'm so proud of you and your game and everything is amazing. I love you !

2020-04-22 06:46

I'm a youtuber, your game is very nice! I want to make a video with the best games of LDJam46. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdTsWE7iIk . Can I find your game also on indiexpo website? The channel is linked with them.

yoshify 2020-04-22 06:52

@torh my game isn't available on there sorry! For simplicity's sake I'm just going to maintain a single link at itch.io :)

2020-04-22 06:58

:( ok.

keybol 2020-04-22 11:52

I enjoyed the missile control mechanic. It's something that tests players skill in planning, hand to eye coordination and estimation. The upgrades are fun too, it's just that I sometimes forget it as I got to focused on the missile mechanic haha. I'd like to see a bigger game where you can have scientists unlock the upgrade that detects incoming meteors, unlocks new defenses and more. Also slimes that reproducde. I also feel I get punished for having less slimes as I don't get to earn as much? I like the risk-reward mechanic of controlling missiles and trying to hit meteors near the planet, it makes such an emotional moment where you not only failed recovering from the meteor hit but getting also hit by your own missiles. Funny. I like the polish you put in the game, it really is well made. Hope to see more of the game!

lazzydev72 2020-04-23 08:30

I enjoyed playing the game Well done

evert 2020-04-23 08:38

One of my favorites so far! Very satisfying controls and sound effects, and nice visual and audio effects too! (perhaps a funny slime-scream when they are involved in an impact? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) Am recommending this to my friends too, well done!

yoshify 2020-04-23 08:40

@evert Thank you so much! The slimes had a faint, high-pitched scream when they got blasted off the planet at first but early playtesters said it was more annoying than entertaining - though I quite enjoyed it. I'll have to make it a toggleable option ;)

mircea123 2020-04-23 08:50

Poor Slimes... they are going trough the worst meteor storm in the history of the WHOLE GALAXY .

Neat game.

pierre-cilluffo 2020-04-23 09:30

Wow, I really like your game! I just had a problem with the browser, when I restart the game, it doesn't work and the game freeze at the first second :/

yoshify 2020-04-23 09:32

@pierre-cilluffo Ah this was a bug I thought I fixed - I believe it's caused by the game holding the "paused" state upon restarting. A quick fix is to open and close a menu. I'll have to look into it again :)

captandrey 2020-04-23 09:42

wow, really cool art and gameplay. My first rocket hit the planet XD, but after some time i became a brave defender. Special thanks for "meteor incoming" feature, game tryed to compencate my slow reacion time)))

jason-woerner 2020-04-23 09:46

Well... that escalated quickly O.o

Graphics, presentation, and just straight fun-factor are all top-notch on this game! I felt like I was playing something I'd purchased on Steam. The difficulty ramped up really quickly, but I suspect I just wasn't purchasing the right upgrades, and will have to give it a few more tries to see how I do. Really, really great entry. I've mostly been playing Compo games, so take this for what it's worth, but even among the Jam games I've played, this is by *far* the most polished. Great work!

The one critique I'd like to offer is that I felt like I needed a way to zoom my camera out just a little. The widescreen gave me plenty of vision to the sides, but meteors coming from the top (and especially the bottom, where the extra UI was) were very hard to catch; by the time I could see them, they were already on top of me.

yoshify 2020-04-23 10:18

@jason-woerner Thank you! Yeah I need to give a clearer view of meteors coming from the top and bottom of the screen, I really appreciate the kind and detailed feedback!

khud0 2020-04-23 10:43

So far this is one of my favorite games! Sound effects are juicy, impact feels great, fire particles are awesome, the rocket controls just as I'd expect it to. I love that what you do is dangerous and you can feel it, you can kill your own population. Instructions are very clear and you always know where the danger is coming from. I have just one tiny remark: I'd suggest waiting for fire particles to fade before destroying the particle system, because they just disappear into nowhere. Great job, fantastic game!

yoshify 2020-04-23 10:48

@khud0 this is something I've actually fixed! I'm unsure as to whether it'd be within the rules to share a post-jam build or not, might wait until everything's wrapped up :)

Thank you for the awesome feedback!

convg 2020-04-23 14:42

I didn't realise i played this for HALF AN HOUR. It was so fun, and the graphics and polish were extraordinary. Really good game, nice job.

mathieu-semin 2020-04-23 14:59

Really nice and fun game ! The polish is good and the graphics too. I think you nailed the controls of the missile. Great job overall !

hugimugi7 2020-04-23 15:30

The tutorial text would have been better as a non-text tutorial and the text speed was slower than expected.

yoshify 2020-04-23 15:32

@hugimugi7 apologies, the text is a bit slow. Originally I wanted it to be an interactive tutorial but time constraints got to me! Thanks for playing.

aj-jones 2020-04-23 17:22

Really well done! I like the concept and gameplay, only small suggestion would be to look into the missile not moving if the aimer is 180 degrees away from it.

yoshify 2020-04-23 17:23

@aj-jones thank you so much! This is a bug I’ve already fixed and will include in a post-jam build soon :)

wans24 2020-04-23 17:37

The game is actually fun to play and it's well balanced. Good visuals, music which does not kill you ears, nice polished look overall. Well done)

notapixelstudio 2020-04-23 18:03

Yoshify ? So you transform in Yoshi ? Cuute ! Let's start that tower defense-ish game are not my thing. So I did 5.50 !!! YEAH, this is the best score you will ever see :D ! (don't think so since up here there are comments that really made 3times my score :D

So the gravity and power of attraction of meteorite is extremely high in this planet... Poor slimes. It was an extremely enjoyable experience, I have just a few suggestions/issues.

- The screen is not simmetrical so all the comets coming from the side are easily predictable instead the one coming from above (and especially from below - since the rocket needs to do the round) is extremely unfair. I get the difficulty of comets from below, but the design doesn't help on this.

- I presume the more you go with less slimes the less you earn from destroying comets (or is it just a matter of time? ) but I would expect that the further away you destroyed them the more you earn so you can ramp up with gears and upgrade easily. At the end if things go bad, you will be more and more doomed, you should try to make the player recover from their situation.

. SFX are really nice, also the graphics pretty on point. Simple and within the scope of the jam.

Nice entry :)

gullyngames 2020-04-23 18:29

Good game! The music really fits the game. The game started out easy, then I died when there was like 10 meteors at a time. I really like how you have the ability to create additional buildings. I had a really fun time playing the game! Good job.

williamcarter 2020-04-23 18:59

This game was super addicting. The mechanics felt solid and well thought out, the graphics felt very polished, and I ended up playing this game for far longer than I thought I would. My only critique would be that occasionally when building an auto missile or laser cannon, the building would spawn inside the planet. Also, I'd be interested to see how the game would feel if the slime population regenerated over time. Great entry!

invader 2020-04-23 23:40

It is a super-cool game! Gameplay is really addictive and the game looks very polished. Missile mechanic feels great!

The only complaint I have is about the font in dialogs... It isn't very readable. I feel it can be improved in many ways by adjusting font family/size and text color/background.

Keep the great work! You are a wizard!

jonrei 2020-04-25 02:07

Very impressive for a first gamejam! Very fun gameplay, I love the upgrades, it gets really intense and the graphics are nice! One thing I would add tho are either a pause button or a hotkey for the upgrade panels as you eventually get to the point where you dont have time to click the button manually. Anyway, good job, this was great!

yoshify 2020-04-25 06:00

@jonrei There are hotkeys for the panels! This is mentionted during the gameplay introduction, the hotkey's are U and B, escape will close all active windows. Escape doesn't pause the game in this build but it's something I've already fixed for the post-ld build. Thanks for playing :)

sujoybyte 2020-04-25 06:50

Really engaging it was I was able to live for 18 minutes just though but really loved it.

emperor-eagle 2020-04-25 07:11

Amazing game! I really enjoyed it! It was engaging, addictive, and had great depth with the upgrades and buildings. The upgrades were still concise in that, you knew what they all did and didn't get bogged down; they were intuitive. Beautiful graphics and nice, matching audio. The pace is perfect except for at the end where it gets a bit fast to quickly (but still fine). I would also increase the volume of the music slightly. The mood was great and the itch.io page really aided the game with that background. Abosulutely incredible game!

sndr 2020-04-25 07:31

Brilliant mechanics! This was a well polished all rounded experience that I really enjoyed! The upgrades add depth and strategy, in addition to the raw survival mode, and it was super intuitive and easy to understand. No tutorial needed, no guidance. Could jump right into it and start playing with it. Awesome work overall!

gamer-fates 2020-04-25 07:44

Nice game!!

paul-giovannini 2020-04-25 07:50

What a cool game ! Very polished with great graphism ! Congrats !

jonrei 2020-04-25 13:05

@Yoshify aaaah! Sorry, my bad I see that now! Anyway, it didnt take away anything from the ratings I gave, because the game is so good!

rextgun 2020-04-25 17:00

One of the better games ive played so far, while it was a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitle difficult i felt like my decisions matter and was interesting trying different play styles to see if i could even get past 5 minutes, its hard for a game to be interesting when winning is so difficult but somehow you made that fun. heres my favorite strategy i tried out ohno.png

yoshify 2020-04-25 17:27

@rextgun thank you so much for the feedback! Yeah, satellites are a bit OP in this build 😅 thankfully 1.1 will be coming with a plethora of bug fixes and balancing changes, one of which being that satellites slow effects have diminishing returns.

Thanks for playing!

rextgun 2020-04-25 17:31

@yoshify im going to miss building my huge shields :< you could make it work by giving them health forcing reconstruction/management and adjust that to where its either sustainable or not sustainable for the long term. since asteriods increase exponentially whatever health they have they will become non-viable eventually

yoshify 2020-04-25 17:35

@rextgun Building health was a feature I toyed with but wasn't sure how satisfying it felt, I wasn't able to get extensive playtesting done. It opened up new strategies, like deployable shelters for the slimes that would protect them from a single meteor, etc.

More extensive building and upgrade systems are something I'm putting the finishing touches on before releasing a post-jam build - such as being able to remove or relocate buildings, more descriptive upgrades, much better UI - just have to finish up the UI part!

rextgun 2020-04-25 17:49

@yoshify will be looking forward to your post ld release (:

yoshify 2020-04-25 17:50

@rextgun I will be sure to @ you once it's live!

curleysam 2020-04-25 17:56

Great game! Honestly loved the art and all the particle effects were perfect! The missles were very satisfying to control so good job! It got really hard towards the end haha! Not sure if I just bought bad upgrades tho. Really well done!

herniewise 2020-04-25 18:37

Well this is really addicting and everything is on point and well thought. I love this kind of games!

Let's get to 70 ratings

drums 2020-04-25 21:50

Very beautiful game! Love the particles and detail in everything. It would be great if another threat appeared after a while, but all in all it looks and feels great! The audio as well! Nice job.

wans24 2020-04-26 08:14

Included your game in my list) https://wans24.itch.io/he-needs-healing/devlog/140983/what-ludum-dare-46-did-to-me

max-louis 2020-04-26 12:06

This is one of my favourite entries so far! I played this for a good 15 minutes on stream and could easily go on for much longer! I think I'm even going to play again, something I haven't done yet with any LD46 games. Really impressed with it. I think it would be awesome to have some more progression in some way like not just meteors coming in.

yoshify 2020-04-26 12:19

@max-louis Thank you so much! I would love to get a link to your stream!

I've many ideas for this game - there'll be plenty more to come. Update 1.1 with quite a few new features, balancing fixes and bug fixes should be out by the end of the week.

max-louis 2020-04-26 12:42

@yoshify Of course! It's https://www.twitch.tv/maxlouiscreative/ (haven't recorded - forgot to hit the button - but recording future ones). We're streaming most nights with different Ludum Dare games. If you join in on stream, let us know and we'll give your game another play for everyone to see again, genuinely really enjoyed it! Maybe you should join when you've dealt with those bug fixes at the end of the week? :)

yoshify 2020-04-26 12:54

@max-louis Sure thing! I'll be sure to @ you once it's ready, following you. :)

peterbuo 2020-04-26 17:24

Crazy that this is your first jam. This is very impressive, I'd love to try unity out this is a great inspiration!

oddtimes 2020-04-26 17:34

This is a great entry, I enjoyed it! Really cool particle effects and liked the intuitive controls.

reece-geofroy 2020-04-26 18:47

Amazing Game man! Keeps you entertained with the progressive difficulty and the upgradable planet!

gurkenlabs 2020-04-28 17:27

I especially loved the particle effects turning this game into an absolute juice fest. Apart from balancing issues, I feel like at a certain point the game didn't really require me to play it any longer as the auto turrets and satellites handled all the meteorites by themselves. All in all, great entry - congratulations!

eran-haas 2020-04-29 08:35

Fun! The targeting controls felt nice, the difficulty curve was good, and the music did I good job of making the mood tense.

From the other comments it looks like I should have invested more in satellites!

basileios 2020-04-29 08:51

This game is one (if not the) best games of the jam. I love the idea and gameplay is fun and satisfying. With savegames, a few more things to do / build and the removal of that weird space at the top I could see this being something I'd pay for!

yoshify 2020-04-29 13:14

@basileios thank you so very much! I’ve got a big update in the works, should have it done by the end of the week. Things like building upgrades, relocatable/removable buildings, enhanced lighting, a settings menu (ft. Colourblind filters!), a plethora of bug and balance fixes are all included. I can’t wait to share it with you all. Comments like this motivate me!

bloodyaugust 2020-04-30 08:18

Excellent entry, definitely in my top 5! It came together beautifully: the mechanic was solid and well-executed, the music although not yours was an excellent choice, the sfx were nice and crunchy, the juice was on point, and it was _extremely_ satisfying to set up a network of missile launchers and watch the fireworks. As you noted, the balance is... questionable, but you did admirably considering how much work was obviously poured into the more mechanical aspects of the game. Great player feedback, too! I never felt like I lost population because I didn't have the information I needed. I hope that in your updates you address the balance to re-focus on the core player interaction, as the automated missiles automated the fun straight out of interacting. Perhaps some variation in threats to the player aside from rate of spawn and size/speed of asteroids would help to diversify the interaction necessary and help offset the crazy efficiency of the missile turrets. I've followed you on itch, I'm excited to see where you take this one!

yoshify 2020-04-30 09:44

@bloodyaugust thank you so much! Yeah the balance was something I wasn’t happy with but unfortunately time was of the essence.

The (almost ready) new update features a fully fledged individual building upgrade system, with a global rebalancing (with things such as cool downs on automatic buildings!), and more.

In the near future I aim to implement an elemental system to vary gameplay and strategies - e.g, an ice planet will slow meteors but also slow physical buildings (such as missile launchers), thus requiring you to invest in buildings such as the laser cannon (or the new Arc Cannon or Grav Cannon!)

Thank you so much for the positive feedback, it really does motivate me to give this project my all. I often develop this live if you’d like to tune in - on http://www.twitch.tv/ImYoshify

Thank you so much for the positive feedback, it really does motivate me to give this project my all. I often develop this live if you’d like to tune in - on http://www.twitch.tv/ImYoshify

@bloodyaugust also, my apologies if that spammed you - I pressed publish once and it appears to have posted the comment 5 times? I think the site's having issues.

@yoshify No worries, the comments system definitely has its bugs.

Beautiful and polished Game. I liked the Music, sounds and Graphic. I like your interpretation of the theme. It would have been nice to see the field auto-missile-launcher or laser covers. If shot a missile can´t be selfdestroyed and hast to be used. Great Work. Thanks! :)
