LD45 — Start with nothing

Nobody's Journey by Phyro 2019-10-11T15:30:45Z

Very nice deckbuilder, I love the idea of starting with nothing and building the deck in-game. I also like the level up mechanic, very nicely done!

World Collector by Joe Williamson 2019-10-11T18:04:32Z

I often tried to make a cool tool for a good level design prospective for room dispositions. And.. you make a game out of it. With a cool mechanic? This is just great!

The Legacy of a Loser by citsua 2019-10-11T17:42:56Z

I did play it for a while. And I found myself intrigued by it even if this is not my genre. You made me play it so kudos to you. I didn't get why I couldn't got to the club :( but then I saw the description here. You should put some warning in game. Well a nice game. Life goes by and you don't even notice. That's what I got from this game.

The Firebrand by selkkie 2019-10-15T08:56:17Z

Criminal UK, videogame edition :) Bit slow of a game, but interrogation are :) Nice experience

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-11T12:15:31Z

Thank you @akusan. What do you mean "weird how you have the beats"? Didn't they feel smooth and synchronized? Or..?

Graphics are actually rough not really polished :) chess pieces are maybe easy to do it :) Thank you for finding the time to try it :)

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-11T12:29:50Z

@iak thanks for your thoughtful feedback. We did struggle a lot with the alignment with visual and sound feedback. It was hard . Needs improvement for sure and maybe some calibration as you mentioned. Thank you for playing :)

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-11T12:31:07Z

@nickzangus thank you. With the short time and the block of creativity in come up with an idea to start. We keep the scope super small and simple. Not without difficulty in a sec and design prospective :) Thanks for playing

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-11T13:00:26Z

@derek-volker thank you very much. A song from you? that would be great!! If you have the time, it would be amazing and very much appreciated. The only requirements are: 120bpm a simple loop (not too short since it might get used immediately and result boring). Then you can do whatever you want :) chess-like, rhythmic. Whatever :)

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-12T17:10:45Z

@empty-set Thank you! Yes, making the game go faster would be an option. We believe that another solution could also be spawning patterns of pieces that cover each other or block movement, forcing you to choose the right direction to move to in addition to stay on the beat.

Thank you for your feedback! :)

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-13T09:04:12Z

@coldsanwdich189 Thank you. Yes we will work on improving the lag. In the last update v0.2.2 The lag has been reduced. Give it another try :)

@nordicebear : Godot Rulez! We went for simple rules and rhythm that pushes to make immediate moves, pushing you into making mistakes :) Thank you man.

@nordicebear: Thanks to @Derek we put the music on. And improved the sync with audio/visual feedback. Thank you for your kind words :)

@lunardust: Thank you! :)

@konomizure: We made an update in which we put the music made by @derek-volker. Give it another go. Audio/visual feedback is improved as well.

@jolett: Thank you !

@ausstein: These are really good advice. We were thinking on level design to make the black pieces appear in a always more difficult way. The movement of the queen is what made us realize the actual rhythm movement, and it gives us some headache. It might be a good thing the fact that you CANNOT take the queen in the *hard-mode* :) Thank you very much for your advice.

@kazatan: Exactly what we wanted to achieve in this small game! :)

@purrseus: Thank you, too kind :)

@kuviman: Thank you. Give it another try. We updated with a better feeling. :) we will keep improving a little by little.

@susumu-asaga: THank you man!

@ancient-pixel: Yeah, there was a bit of lag with the audio/visual feedback. Now with the v.0.2.2 we added mobile support and better audio/visual feedback handling. Give it another go and let us know if you can :)

@humphreysmedia: There is some feedback when you hit the movement at the right time. Isn't enough? Maybe something like: "Great!" "Bravo" "Amazing" ? Well since you tried it, it is my pleasure to tell you that "YOU ARE AMAZING!" - true story :)

Thank you guys. A big shout out to @derek-volker that provided a song for this short silly game we made for this jam. And Thank you guys for trying

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-13T10:39:42Z

@baturinsky i NEED to play yours now :) I guess you're a fun of classic chess puzzle :) we want to put some novelty into this classic genre. We could make more complicated the spawning of new pieces maybe with pattern. The rhythm-base pushes you to act quickly. Of course the king moves diagonally. The beat might be too unforgiven, but you need to get used to the beat. Thank you very much :)

@nick-parry which system is that? Web? What browser? Try chrome. Or download the build. Or try Android build. Let me know. And thanks for trying it out :)

@mccarlp thank you. Yeah it's hard to find the right tuning for the beat. Not an easy task. It might need a calibration step, but this goes too far out of the scope of the jam. We keep trying to improve gameplay feeling though. Stay tuned :) and thank you so much :)

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-13T10:40:51Z

@baturinsky can you link the game you're referring to (the other chess-based game)

King of Nothing by notapixelstudio 2019-10-14T13:53:34Z

@simon-rahnasto There is a mobile version, you can download it from the link in itch.io give it a try and let us know (it seems a bit harder in mobile).

Thank you all guys for your kind words.

Start With Nothing On by Lagman9000 2019-10-13T09:07:45Z

During brainstorming, we had the same idea. A little bit of more stealthy action, while you needed from other houses the clothes :) But it is fun. :) Why he keeps dying though ? "Ouch" :) Super nice graphics and funny idea

Slippery Slope by Adamkauth 2019-10-12T09:12:20Z

It definitely is a start from nothing feel since you have to create your level from scratch :) why the character is not a ball though? Nice improvement the multi player feature

From Rags to Riches by ToC 2019-10-14T10:03:00Z

a sort of clicking game and RPG. Well, way better than clicking game. But if it wasn't all automatic as it is, it wouldn't be that fun ! And yet, I found myself watching playing for half a day :) @belug23 Yoru rulez, and you're crazy :D thank you for the laugh

From Rags to Riches by ToC 2019-10-14T10:03:30Z

I couldn't make the map scroll. How can I do that?

From Rags to Riches by ToC 2019-10-15T08:45:20Z

i came back at this game. I ascended! :) Awesome I did like it . Bit long gameplay but definitely enjoyable

Spooky: The one who lost everything by Susumu Asaga 2019-10-28T15:29:18Z

I can't play the macOS version :/

til0x by nordicebear 2019-10-11T22:07:13Z

Highscore of 60!! I like this kind of game. Even if it is minimal it gives the idea of what you wanted to achieve. It's a bit unforgiven when you are at 0 possible moves. Even if you have extralives you are stuck in that column and that is only luck based. I enjoyed my gameplay :)

LD46 — Keep it alive

Abandoned by GRaAL 2020-04-23T08:27:29Z

A godoter! <3 and it is a compo. Respect. This puzzle game is lovely. The creature is the moon ? Nice stuff you had the time to do different levels. And pretty challenging too. I didn't really like the two endings in which he has to die :( .. And he is too powerful with the laser beam. There is a bug in the last level, if you open the switch and immediately go into the door, you get stuck :( So couldn't see the last ending. Gameplay: I like the fact everyone around moves if you moved. But since you're the only player, it's a bit annoying that for every step you make you have to wait. I would like that everyone would move accordingly and immediately :D Thank you for your work <3

Come Meet My Friend Who Lives in the Attic by fishbrain 2020-04-23T16:49:31Z

a thrilling experience! SFX are really good, except for the collect key sounds- really annoying. Thunder and other sound effects are really good. The graphics and the athmosphere is cool.... The question here though is ... Why? Why do you need to collect the key ? and feed yourself into the Kraken monster ? the gameplay is too dark and a sort of hide and seek that gives you no suspance at all, since then you need to give yourself up to the Kraken. Not really an exciting way to go :)

I like the simplicity though, one screen, a house, few objectives. The issue is that they don't really glue up together, given also the theme of this LDJAM.

But enjoying experience nonetheless :) So thank you for your entry.

FlameOver by fancy89 2020-04-23T08:25:54Z

Is the main character a monkey? where did he find an umbrella? why is it alone? where does the thing on the top right bring? I guess these are questions we will never know ... But I have some feedback for you:

The idea is simple and this is really good in a jam, The main theme is within the scope of the Keep it alive. So top mark on this, then the endless mode really fits the scope of the game.

- Gameplay: I don't think the mouse is the right device to be playing with. I would have felt more comfortable with keys (or a gamepad), so I could have more control on directions. The mouse ruined a bit my experience. - Design: Feed the fire with wood, defend from water and wind :D I like when the desin is linear, coherent and effective! Good job. It's weird actually that wood just spawn, randomly on the island, wouldn't be better to get the guy make some wood from the palms? And talking about difficulties in keep the fire alive Sometimes is really unfair though when wind and water attack together, also because Fantozzi's rainy cloud is really slow so you need to stay there and defend the fire ( I think the rain is stronger than the wind in shutting the fire down). - Sounds: A chill music would have been a really good fit :( . I had to turn the sound down because the chill, cozy sound of the fire mixed up in an the high volume of wind, and annoying chirping of the birds. You should try to adjust the volume and blend them better together. - Graphics: The pixel art is nice, on point and it does the job :)

I did 98.4 on the first try. And 129 in the second.. Is it... good ? It would be nice to have a leaderboard :)

I even found out you are Italians, bravi ragazzi! Complimenti.

edit: better formatting

... it's just a windows build :( sad now

The Keep! It's Alive! by minibobbo 2020-04-30T13:32:07Z

Apart from the annoying screenshake when the Keep awakes (it's more subtle and fine when you smash you fists on the floor) this game is TOP notch. Funny and entartaining, a bit too difficult for my skills. But it's a nice small mobile game :D good job

Gaia by Rodrigo Denúbila 2020-04-23T16:57:44Z

Nice little touch with our beloved planet Earth - Gaia for the ancients. <3 Cool resource management idea. Unfortunately the gameplay is not really enjoyable since the earth is too small in respect of the cursor and it spin too fast. It's hard to see what's going on on the earth and humans are really the worst. SFX are a bit too loud but the music is chilling and relaxing.

I just would imagine a more relaxing experience while playing and I found myself trying to save my planet in a big screen but with confusing commands :( Thank you for your entry. There is a potential here.

HAL 2020 by OveRMolo 2020-04-24T21:59:26Z

Is the HTML5 version working? I couldn't understand what to do besides opening the console.

Red Vs Blue by Ayced 2020-04-23T08:29:49Z

So it's a sort of tower defense in 3D. not really my thing but I'll give you that graphics (I mean your programmer art) is impressive and 3D. but I don't understand a few things in term of design or choices: - you could have make a sort of path the Red team could have attacked you. it's a boring if they just spawn and attack you. - weird choice to make the player decide when the waves will appear. - there is no way to see how is your base/tower/field/men health bar. - why do the projectiles pass throught the base? - why do the projectiles bounce on your rifle men? - why 3D? I think you could have been more fit with 2D - but I guess this is just a personal opinion, so not really important :D

Thank you for your entry! And keep up game dev.

Keep It Alive top-down shooter by kkrac 2020-04-24T22:15:42Z

Cool :) Maybe a little time between waves could help with the pacing!

Oak Defenders by Hugimugi7 2020-04-23T17:42:40Z

The graphics is really enchanting. Cool stuff for real... So is that baby Yoda? it is right?

Soo... let's just start that tower defense are not really my thing (but I enjoyed a few), but platformers are, so it's cool to see a platformer, and I like the resource management part. So .. let's start.

I played a run that lasted 11 waves. I scored poorly also because I didn't really get how to use the commands for the first 60 seconds.

The movements of Baby yoda are pretty cool, I don't understand what's the use of TRIPLE jump, but anyway. The space is too huge, while every single enemy just crawl and shooting with the mouse is a complication you could avoid since it's hard (and pretty useless, I say) to aim any other direction than straight ahead (if you really want 45degrees up), it was frustrating.

The game is pretty NOT rewarding since you need to wait 5 waves of collectable resources in order to see some growth of what should be the real protagonist here: the Oak (extremely cute btw). I wanted to leave the game in the first 3 waves .. this means you should have lured me in and reward in the FIRST succedeed wave.

the turrets are pretty weak, and they seem to shoot randomly not helping you at all. This is frustrating, mixed up with the fact that if the enemy touches you, you can't shoot anymore.

The huge space unused unfortunately make the platformer part wasted :(

It would have been cool if Yoda could jump on the Oak branches and the Oak could have helped in defending himself being a symbolism of the nature that endure on the attack of men!

Yoda and the force will always win, though. Thanks for the entry and good luck!

Mutiny by Cataractar 2020-04-23T19:59:18Z

I am extremely jealous of the players that manage to reach the end... I couldn't :( This game is quite fun, shame there is so sounds at all. You could have put some sounds an dmusic from opengameart.com or freesound.com ...

Wasn't just me or some spots, sotimes, couldn't work properly. I kept dragging sailors and they wouldn't stay in that position...

And boy do these sailors drink and eat when left alone :D

Juice it up and this is a cool entry ready to sail every port in the country ! Sac 'em Aye aye

LIFE:anti-viral by whydoidoit 2020-04-25T11:10:00Z

nice idea, a bit confusing though. Here UI and UX is crucial. I guess the scope was a bit bigger than a jam game. But nice try. thanks for the entry :)

Penguin March by ilPrinny 2020-04-25T11:15:41Z

Reminded me of Reigns .. kind of ... there is a similar entry like this one (@abdurrahman-khallouf, should try that out. Nice little penguins going around. Animations of idle is really similar to the walking cycle animation. so confusing when stopping or going ahead. Sound effects are seriously annoying though.

RNGesus was kind to my penguins :)

Thank you for your entry

Keep the Party Alive! by TouchMe 2020-04-22T23:36:19Z

Maybe I would prefer it as a 2D game, since I sometimes find it very confusing to look for objects and people in all that mess... nice idea though! I really like your take on the theme :)

Keep the Love Alive by notapixelstudio 2020-04-23T18:58:17Z

@apandso thanks for playing :) Yeah, this is why we kept you stuck in the tutorial screen, and make you move the character there, so you get more familiar with the controls :D We choose M since it's mainly a local-multiplayer game, and space might get pressed by whoever controls the WASD side of the keyboard :D

@ulcius yeah... imagine: PATHFINDING A* in a platformer where you can go down on the platform... in a jam... of 72 hours :D We just put it there, to help whose in quarantine that couldn't play with noone :D thanks for playing

@anahandley you're amazing!

@hare-software thanks so much ! Yeah, the game is fast so you kind of have the impression to the unfairness of the bar, but actually it's clock-based, everysecond checks if you two lovebirds are together or not :)

Thank you @dreamer , I am glad you shared a cute moment together with a stupid game like this... Don't let her see your comment though :D <3 hearts everywhere

Keep the Love Alive by notapixelstudio 2020-04-25T21:51:45Z

@alexander-wayne , are you related, in any form, to.... Batman? :)

Thanks for the comment and for trying out the game. I can understand the confusion on the controls' scheme. But it is a local co-op game, mainly. We added CPU the last three hours to allow the chance to a single player... Implementing a pathfinding algorithm for platformer was too much :)

Great observation for the up and down arrows, but that, I think, is our bias. We personally prefer using another hand for jumping, so we needed a button in the 1st player's half keyboard. And that was the begining of the 'M' kingdom for jumping in this game

Arex: Contain And Keep by Hare Software 2020-04-23T08:26:46Z

Chewbacca? You captured Chewbacca ? Ohh, pooor thing... So since you've been naughty and mean to him... here is some feedback. So at the start you are thrown out in a room where basically everything is interactable, and this is a nice thing, but to know what you have to do you need to go to the Computer that is 3 interactive things away from you. I think you should give the player an immediate way to know what is up, and what you need to do. The graphics reminds me Monkey Island for some reason. Once I got the grab of it, I enjoyed the various reaction of the Chewbacca guy. But the way assignment works are not really straightforward. The inconsistency on the keys to press (E for interact, SPACE for activate, ENTER to enable) is a bit confusing. Good try, thanks for your entry. And I feel bad for the two guys I just killed for the experiment :(

"attempt to apply the following stimuli with losing control of the subject ..." what ? don't understand

I needed to come back to the game and try to provoke him to see what happens... And ... wasn't disappointed!! I got killed Chewbacca and the researcher together <3 Coool stuff :D

Together by Ulcius 2020-04-23T18:29:48Z

Blossom Blaster by skitzogamer 2020-04-22T23:19:58Z

Can't say I am a fan of the art style mixing photos and cartoon characters, as well as using way too many colors and particle effects... but the gameplay, its core loop, and its progression are very interesting IMO. A good balance of resource management and action. Well done :)

Silicon Soldiers by Hueson 2020-04-24T17:05:30Z

Silicon Soldiers by Hueson 2020-04-24T22:29:48Z

Defending with your body is a very interesting mechanic, but I found both the gameplay and the different weapons a bit plain. Graphics and audio are top notch though!

Stoke It ! - V1.3 by WegPast 2020-04-22T23:05:11Z

Nice idea, keeping an eye on the gauges and controls while also piloting can be very challenging and rewarding. I would love being introduced to the many different aspect of the game in a more gentle curve though. There's a lot to process right from the start. Someone already mentioned a tutorial, but also levels with an incremental complexity would be very interesting IMHO.

Mammoth Expedition by Abdurrahman Khallouf 2020-04-23T16:32:26Z

A nice take on Reigns. I always liked that genre of game, managing resources and try to keep everyone happy. I like the setting.... but a few things to notice:

- the game is really slow-paced. It almost feel like any choice isn't really punishing. I would have feel more engaging if I got punished more for sconsiderate actions. - the font and the color you used is confusing with the background and it's hard to read (the screen is big, and the space taken from objects and element is huge). There was room for bigger fonts, but for some reason you decided not to :D - the buttons are too small, it's the only interactive thing of the game. Make it bigger :) - the dialogues are confusing, when choosing an action is it you the one talking ? or whoever talked to you first? if it is the first one, the dialogue seems incoherent. - I stayed without food for 4 days.... Pretty good maintaing 14 workers alive and happiness moderate for 4 days without food :D I am a good leader :P

Anyway, cool take... But I would have stayed with the simplicity of the cards like in Reigns - or just bigger buttons for decisions. Lots of space, but poorly occupied.

I know the review seems overly critique, but I did like the game. And I am trying to give you honest feedback. I know it's a jam, but we're here to learn right :D

Thank you for your entry

Mammoth Expedition by Abdurrahman Khallouf 2020-04-23T21:00:51Z

Cool response @abdurrahman-khallouf :)Screenshot_20200423_224859_com.DefaultCompany.MammothExpedition.jpg

I did try on the android build as well and still same beliefs :)

- The button yes and no, since they are the interactive things ... Should be bigger. This was cool in Reigns. The card was there and you had to choose left or right. Simple, clean on point. - the text is okay, but some keyword like 'frozen mammoth' gets confused with the background - i get confused with the dialogue system because when someone talks, there is a dialogue box, then the box is different. So I thought you were the only one answering. But as I said it didn't add up - The story is a good touch indeed, but it's hard to keep it coherent, obviously. E.g.: I wanted to NOT kill the dog, it keeps coming back and stealing food, but I've never killed it. No one gets hurt :) that is a decision, you should punish or reward for the decision

Yes people trying game on the jam will not lose, approximately more than 5-10 minutes. But ... It's gamedev job make a demo in which you demonstrate what you want to do in those 5 minutes

Eveleen by isayneigh 2020-04-22T21:31:42Z

I want to vote, I want to find out more about this game. But the only build available is for Windows, and I don't have a Windows. I wish you could give the chance to play. Or at least a video I can watch. A web version? Did you use a game engine ? sad :(

Thanks for the entry, though.

Cats In Flats by Black Flag 2020-04-23T16:59:42Z

Unfortunately the game is just for Windows. I would have like this one to try it out. Even a video gameplay would suffice :) thanks

Cats In Flats by Black Flag 2020-04-23T17:08:29Z

macOS or web version is cool-io @black-flag

Cats In Flats by Black Flag 2020-04-23T18:19:43Z

Cat sanctuary are cool <3 ahah the voice is cool, and a cat would never kill you. But cool stuff that you care about your goldfish. <3

Soo.. let's start... Movements are really annoying since they gain momentum and you start to slide really fast from one direction to another, The need of click for shooting is a bit weird, since you can just shoot just in front of you. I personally would have preferred to use the arrow keys to direct the shooting and WASD for moving - might be a personal preference though.

A sort of tower defense I see, not really my thing but the sound design were cute. You could have make more in level design and try to make the obstacles a bit more solid, since they were moving really fast out of the way.

The "shop" wasn't really intuitive either. but this is a cute entry. Thank you for letting me play your game <3

Chasse Gardée by FrancescoPanini 2020-04-25T11:43:01Z

LOL, lots of killing in this game. It's really hard, and love the sfx in this one...

Feels a bit ironic saving a turkey for then get it killed at last :(

- The raycast is visible only when you aim at the turkey, and that feels pretty useless :) but I know it's a jam so that might have slipped. - You could have left open a time-window where if the fox or the bird caught the turkey you could have saved it nonetheless. - Plus it's really hard catch the fox :(

Thanks for the entry, sir

Keep the Fire Alive FINAL by Krebzor 2020-04-22T21:20:03Z

Cold Front by chrismcco 2020-04-23T08:28:50Z

It's Triple triad with no different creatures and a cell already taken by the snowman ? Well, not really fit into the theme... but ... but .. The transition between turn, the sfx for the passing of turns and the snapping of the card is really good! And this is cool for a gamedev to know how to do it.

S.L.I.M.E.S. Division by Yoshify 2020-04-23T18:03:40Z

Yoshify ? So you transform in Yoshi ? Cuute ! Let's start that tower defense-ish game are not my thing. So I did 5.50 !!! YEAH, this is the best score you will ever see :D ! (don't think so since up here there are comments that really made 3times my score :D

So the gravity and power of attraction of meteorite is extremely high in this planet... Poor slimes. It was an extremely enjoyable experience, I have just a few suggestions/issues.

- The screen is not simmetrical so all the comets coming from the side are easily predictable instead the one coming from above (and especially from below - since the rocket needs to do the round) is extremely unfair. I get the difficulty of comets from below, but the design doesn't help on this.

- I presume the more you go with less slimes the less you earn from destroying comets (or is it just a matter of time? ) but I would expect that the further away you destroyed them the more you earn so you can ramp up with gears and upgrade easily. At the end if things go bad, you will be more and more doomed, you should try to make the player recover from their situation.

. SFX are really nice, also the graphics pretty on point. Simple and within the scope of the jam.

Nice entry :)

Feed The Fire by Nuanda79 2020-04-25T11:30:28Z

it reminded me of that Simpson's episode where Bart and Homer are in the woods looking for the alien, and the alien was mr Burns :D

It's a good choice to not put the alien in the fire. But I wish there was more to do. Just grabbing stuff and put on the fire, once you drain out all the possible objects is not a engaging core-loop mechanic.

SFX are a bit annoying overall (the only two I liked were "Oh noo" and the fire sounds)... Graphics is nice and cute.

You should tell somewhere how to recharge the battery of the light torch. but the way you recharge, feels a bit ... off. I would prefer as collecting batteries around and... don't know, mount them in the torchlight ? As I distractor/minigame inside the game.

Well, it was a jam, so the scope was small enough, and I actually had fun playing it :) Thanks for the entry

It looks like a dream. With a game within a game. Lack of consistency in coherence in design. Wouldn't it make more sense trying to keep alive the patient inside the ambulance, ramming through the traffic to reach the hospital ? And maybe give it "minigame" inside where you could have saved and keep the plant that one of the patient (or patients' parents) gave you to thanks for your work ? Just a thought.

The graphics looks really good, the playability of the ambulance is really hard though. Maybe it's a feature :D
