Very fun game, especially once I got the hang of the mechanics! Good stuff matey!
A nice concept and pretty well executed. It would feel so much more enjoyable with some audio, though. The game seemed to be quite repetitive towards the end, and even normal mode felt a little difficult, but that could be me. Shortening the time before reaching the end might help with this, or tweaking the difficulty to work for people who did not actually create the game (you will, of course, find it a lot easier!) Hard to test during a jam though. Good work!
nice concept but this would really shine with some music and sound alerts, sailor grunts when assigned to tasks etc. Great polish in the game mechanics department.
That's a really good idea, I like that kind of management in a game! It's just a little complicated to understand the impact of certain positions. Yo-ho!
Great game, I got to the last port. Different elements are well balanced, I was worried with so many mechanics it was going to be impossible unless you programmed it. But was able to get though narrowly avoided a mutiny. Well done.
Very fun game. Enjoyed the mechanics and the art.
Nice, it gave me good FTL vibes, even if the lack of sound is a bit disappointing overall I had fun. I would love to add some fightings with other ships too, but for a game made in 3 days it still impressive Good job, yaaargh!
The art was amazing and the game was fun. I had a ton of fun moving the sailors around to keep them happy. I undervalued food and the sailors raided my ship. Good job sticking to the them and thanks for the "How to Play" tutorial or I would have never understood the game because of all the stats. The only thing I did not like was that the names of the sailor were not above the heads of the sailors on the ship, but very very minor thing. Overall very very very fun game.
ARRR!!! Really nice game, was quite engaging and I was sad when it was already over but thankfully I could continue. Nicely made game!
The idea is really cool. As a game, I think the weakest parts were the lack of music and the graphics not coming through well. The UI got a little bit confusing as well. And adding to that, some sound design would have gone a long way. I would have also liked some flavor text, especially for the win screen.
That said, the core game-play was fantastically balanced. I loved the simple yet engaging primary loop. The complexity was just right, though it doesn't offer a lot in terms of replay-ability. It made for a thoroughly absorbing experience. Enjoyed it!
@samuel-hollywood-summers @nosfer Thank you for your feedback and i'm glad you liked it! A lot of sounds where planned, snorring when using the cabin, singing when drinking rum, sharpening knives when mutiniy is happening... Sadly the overall player-feedback came up short in the amount of time we had. Keep on sailing maties!
Great management game :)
- missed a few comfort functionality (such as swapping sailors) - more events (in addition to the port and ship boarding) could bring more replayability - more impact from the rhum could be nice to (I almost never used it once I found my routine)
Interesting mechanics! I found having more sailors actually made it a bit harder to manage, next time I'll strategize not to buy new sailors at every port! Graphics were great. I wanted more bunks to recharge my sailors, but that may have made the game too easy. Overall a well balanced game, one of the better and funner ones I have seen so far!
Yeah, pirates !
I knew I won when I engaged the woman, whose name is apparently "John" ? Not judging here, but it helps a lot for the moral of the crew !
msedge_2020-04-21_13-44-23.png
I love the childish graphics and the mechanics work, the game looks balanced. Of course, pirate music and sound effects would have made it 3x better, but not anyone has the time and skills to add sound design to their game. Good job anyway, it was fun !
Nice game!Love the graphics!
@Meedoc Thank you for you feedback! Swapping sailors automatically is a great idea. If we update the version we will take a look into it.
Super interesting concept, great execution. Goofy art 😂 Only issue is I didn't understand the plank circle being red I thought I had to put my dude there because everything else also gets red when you need to do something so I ended up kicking one dude off making it super hard to sail with only two dudes. So at port one I bought another sailor and I got robbed, got no sailor but lost the money from it. Bought drinks but it was only a liter and that got used in like a millisecond so i'd recommend making resources worth a little more. But all in all super fun, now that I totally understand it, i'll give it a second go. Good job bro!
Lmao this was fun, please turn this into a fully fleshed out game. One of the most fun games I've played during this jam, but maybe it's just a genre that particularly appeals to me for some reason
iwon.png
Awesome game! reached 120 in unfair mode! 1.png
@forevertrash At least you motivated the rest of the crew to work harder by letting one walk the plank :see_no_evil: The rum is best used to prevent mutiny from happening last second but your right the sailors chug a lot. Glad you liked it
It's a super fun game, it's not very complicated gameplay but it's super engaging and fun. The graphics are very cool especially the overall design. Music would have been the icing on the cake but i get that time is sparse and other things have proirity.
I enjoyed this game, a nice mostly well balanced little management game with some well designed mechanics. When I read the tutorial I was at first concerned that perhaps you had over complicated it and given too many things to manage at once, but once I started playing I found that actually was not the case. Real shame this didn't have any music or sound effects, I think a good sea shanty and a few "arrrs" would have really livened the game up a lot. Nice effort for a weekend though!
@joamd Arrrsome! Thanks for playing ;)
Fun little management game, works quite well!
Nice game! It's a fun concept. At the end I had 4 angry sailors rlly close to mutineer but arrived to the port just on time!! :D Its a shame that this didn't have sound, but a good experience anyways
arrr i like this, scurvey bilge rat! this should be a mobile game in the playstore! arrr.
Hahahahha - love the plank - however it seemed that it swapped around - so the guy I threw overboard actually had the wrong "face" - so the two remaining was difficult to tell apart
Big :thumbsup_tone1:
:purple_heart: :dart: :frog:
I like how you went innovative. The pirates looks really nice and funny. I like that there's is plank and mutiny. The theme fits well. Sadly, I didn't really get it. I'm sorry. I don't know how to play. It may have just been me. It may also be also because I have a long list of games to play. So I wanted to try the other games. It's about onboarding for me, making new players introduced to mechanics. Show don't tell. I saw the instructions and skipped it (my fault) but it would be better to make the players do what the game instructions are telling them instead.
@keybol I agree, that a full fletched tutorial would be beneficial for the game. Introducing mechanic by mechanic, creating special challenges to solve, start with one sailor... Sadly production time was tight and using a "slideshow" was the only possible solution to create some sort of tutorial. Thank you for your honest feedback, maybe we can improve on that in the future :)
@purpledartfrog @lauramakesgames Thanks for the bug reports! We've released a fixed version.
@magus77 Well, it's not on the Play Store, but we've added a simple Android port to the page!
@cataractar you're absolutely welcome
gamewin.PNG
Really nice game concept! Thanks for sending it over. Pacing is very good, gets quite stressful as the crew fills up and you're trying to cater to everyone. Will keep an eye out for future development!
Fun concept! Reminds me a bit of FTL. I found that the biggest issue I ran into was determining which morale bar went with which pirate. You might consider color coding the pirates or putting each pirate's indicator right next to him as he moves from station to station.
@guardaro Thank you for your feedback :) Making the pirates a little bit more distinguishable would be a good idea as well as highlighting the pirates on the left side when interacting with them. The moral bar should be placed directly on top of the pirate heads. They were not visible when you played?
@pilarius Holy moly... I went back and played it again, and there they are! I think that I was watching the big bars on the left-hand side so closely that I missed them.
Such a cool management game. You can turn out this into a fleshed out game for mobile.
Some comments: I didn't have any need to use the rum room or the food room (in normal mode at least). Maybe put some starving meter as well that will force you to use those rooms? Or that the bedroom doesn't increase morale too much so that you need to give them rum or food every now and then.
Congrats.
This was really fun and I won! However, there was one thing that confused me. Is there a consequence to the pirates morality hitting 0? A lot of times my pirates morality hit 0 but I didn't see anything happen.
@guardaro I am glad you found it :) Light green on top of a light blue sky might not be the smartest choice readability wise ^^
Fun game and really original. Liked the approach to the theme. Took me a while to get the rules as the instructions were partially covered on the browser. Excellent work!
Interesting game. Would like to have some background music and maybe sound effects when moving the sailors. Good job mate!
@kkrac Thank you for playing and the feedback. If we develop this game further we will definitely have a closer look into balancing and making each room count and maybe adding some more. At the moment there is a buff of moral for the whole crew when some one is preparing meals as well as a starving debuff if you run out of food completely. I'm glad you liked it :) Will take a look at your shooter as well
@sanjana When only one pirates moral hit 0 he is still motivated by the rest of the crew. But if the majority of the sailors are unhappy with you leadership they will start the mutiny. At the moment this is the only consequence. I`m glad you had fun
@sanjana The game uses the average morale to calculate the mutiny meter increase, so if e.g. 2 sailors have full morale while 2 others have empty morale, you are still fine.
super fun game. would definitely love some pirate speak.
@pillitoka YARRRRR!
Fun idea! Definitely would benefit from sound, but I totally understand running out of time and not being able to get everything in there. Even without music or sfx, I still had a good time playing! It was pretty satisfying making them walk the plank when I was feeling murdery, haha, and I enjoyed trying to balance who worked where and for how long. If you keep working on it, I'd suggest incorporating the tutorial into the game itself instead of having it be a separate section. I think it would help ease people into the UI and learn how to best manage their pirates. Anyway, I hope you all keep updating it!
@ctrble That's great to hear :) When we update the game we will have a look into Sound and the On boarding section. Keep Sailing Matey !
Solid game. There aren't enough games about pirate ships.
Very nice game. :) As others said, some music and sound effects would have been great. My only concern was about the moving the pirates. Maybe sometimes I wasn't on the right spot, but the pirate went back to his position before I started moving him.
@fredfilo The ship has two areas were multiple sailors can work in. The sails have 3 and the cabin 2 slots (pirates which high charisma influences other pirates in the same area).
At the moment these areas are filled up by order. If you try to move the only a sailor from sail (1/3) to sail (2/3) he will jump back to sail (1/3) which needs to be filled first.
This is not that intuitive so it will probably be fixed in future versions. Thank you for letting us know :)
My sea shanties weren't very good lol. Enjoyed it, also suffered a little from not quite getting the moves I wanted but figured it out.
Really original idea, i love it. Its really fun and you can spend a lot of time playing. A little bit of information might help but overall really nice job.
@convg I'm glad you liked it :) What do you mean with 'a little bit of information' during on boarding, while playing, background stats?
@pilarius Oh yeah sorry about that lol. I meant how to play.
@convg Yeah a full-fledged in game tutorial would be beneficial for the overall game. No worries, just wanted to make sure, that I understood your feedback right, so it can help to improve the game in future versions.
Good job! Really enjoyed it. I liked to put sailors up and down, and the connection between my actions and results are clear. I tried to put sailors near to get them better, but I am not sure I managed to obtain this
Pirates :D ! At first I failed big time, then I realised that always manning the lookout awards you so much gold that you can have food and rum for days once you reach a port, after the first port the ship more or less sailed itself. This was however not on unfair mode, which I'll try next ^^
Much fun, pretty easy to grasp, if a bit repetetive after a while, and sadly no sound or music :( But the characters looked funny and the rest of the graphics was nice (Once I got a pirate whose portrait was just a white square though).
^^ Good game!
I am extremely jealous of the players that manage to reach the end... I couldn't :( This game is quite fun, shame there is so sounds at all. You could have put some sounds an dmusic from opengameart.com or freesound.com ...
Wasn't just me or some spots, sotimes, couldn't work properly. I kept dragging sailors and they wouldn't stay in that position...
And boy do these sailors drink and eat when left alone :D
Juice it up and this is a cool entry ready to sail every port in the country ! Sac 'em Aye aye
Yarr, I did love plying the high seas! And enjoyed sailing beyond th' horizon of 100 progress for a spell. Didn't touch the grog... ne'er did like the stuff when robb'n ships is better whoopie and no hangover. And I ne'er did hire a pirate with a funny face... who needs' em, arr. Only the tip top fer this capn. Har har har
@fpeg Thank you for playing. I'm glad you liked it :) We tried to design the normal mode in a way that most of the players can complete it after a few tries. Putting sailors in the crows nest is indeed a bit powerfull ^^ How was your experience in unfair mode?
@notapixelstudio Thank you for your honest feedback. Happy to hear that you had fun playing :)
The overall player feedback including sound sadly needed to be left behind due to production issues. Improving this would be prioritized in future versions.
As mentioned to @fredfilo the placement issue comes from the ordered placement of sailors on combined areas like sail, crows nest and cabin and should be improved as well.
Thanks for playing, keep on sailing matey! :skull:
@phixnay Had a lot of fun reading that comment  valuable feedback framed like that :ok_hand:
Good looking, nice and relaxing game! Miss the sea fights though :P
@leon-oost Sea fights could definitely be a nice addition to the game, thanks for playing :)
Really good game, surprised how many systems you got working in this in such a short time. It all works really well together and a great resource management game. Loved how Rum was the best way to get crew members back to there best and how cruel and punishing the crow's nest can be. Really well thought out, great job!!!
@yeti-kid I'm glad you liked it and thank you for your feedback, keep sailing matey :)
Solid game, good idea and well implemented. Sounds would defiantly helped but everything else was well done. Good Job
Argh! A pirate theme never goes out of style! It is a shame that I had to sing my own sea shanties, as even the most drunken of sailors run away when I sing. Other than that, the game was fun. And with more variety of events and some shanties it could grow even better :).
The normal mode felt too easy though, didn't even have to send anybody down the plank and mutiny meter stayed at zero the whole time - they were all very well-behaved pirates ;). Would be cool if dragging one pirate on top of another would make them change places.
Great jam work, maties!
@fabula-rasa I appreciate your feedback! What a pity to have no sounds. Maybe I have to 'sing' some by myself and update it
Balancing games is always pretty challenging and even more during a game jam. Some players were struggling hard with the chosen difficulty and some had similar experiences as you did. How did you like the difficulty of unfair mode?
Switching pirates would be a good UX improvement, we'll take a look into that.
Thank you for playing, don't swim with the sharks matey :skull:
@pilarius balancing the game is definitely not easy, I know. I loved the unfair mode. Totally kicked my backside the first time I tried it (I ran out of everything and was mutinied to death before the first port even) :). So I had to learn to do better!
I beat the game in normal mode! It was an interesting resource managing challenge with a lot of systems. The game was a bit confusing at first because the tutorial seemed to give a lot of information, but I got the gist of it after a few tries. It was fun keeping track of multiple bars, although mutiny is still a bit confusing to me. I liked the simple art though I didn't notice the bars on top of the pirates' heads until after a while (might just be me though!). Once I noticed them the game felt a lot easier without having to keep looking at the left side of the screen. Fun take on the theme. Good job!
@pilarius I can elaborate even further, if you want :). You have all those nice mechanics (slower regaining of morale with food, faster regaining with rum, run lowering work efficiency, sailors getting demoralized faster on the crow's nest and so on - by the way, I dunno why they get so demoralized on the crow's net, I always loved it there). And it feels like exactly none of it matters in the normal mode. You can just shuffle your sailors around and, as long as you don't let a morale of a guy fall to the floor, you're golden.
In Unfair mode, it's great. You have to understand and internalize all those mechanics you took the time to create for us. My pirate arse was kicked and I learned that I have to prioritize speed before the first port, or I'm screwed, I cannot afford the luxury of crow-nesting a lot before I can hire more help. And that was fun! It was fun to learn and fun to apply and see it working out for me.
I will try to resist swimming with the sharks. But, you know, after so many weeks at sea - anything can look like a mermaid
@fabula-rasa That is really great to hear and aweome that you took the time to play the game in that extend. We were a bit worried about all the mechanics if they would be undertood and I'm glad it worked for you!
Whatever floats your boat ;)
I'll take a second look on the last guardian, maybe I can give you some valuable feedback in return.
Yarr, got to the third checkpoint and lost! Really fun game. Loved the pirate theme.
Nice job, interesting take on the pirate theme! I would have like a little more feedback when pirates were doing certain things, i.e. a "wind" meter or something like that. As it was, it was a little hard to work out what effect putting sailors in the different places had.
I like the concept and the pirate theme is nice. The normal mode was quite easy but I did enjoy myself. Although to be honest I did not remember ll the different things and what they did , it became clearer during the sailing. I think there should be a more visual way to show what all the functions are, for example when one sailor is regaining morale or all of them , some glowing or a colored outline or something. All in all a pretty solid game that looks nice and feels fun, but the "complicated" mechanics could do with some more visual clues.
@shakedimus Thank you for playing and letting us know. In future updates we plan to improve the overall player feedback by adding more visual and audio clues. Thank you for the ideas we'll have a look into that. Sail on matey :)
Really nice game - the tutorial was a bit TL;DR for me, so I tried going without the details :>
The resources ran pretty low and I found myself just boosting the speed - but got through even though. Reading the tutorial afterwards told me that I missed some keyfeatures, maybe they should be absolutely required and you can't win if not played properly, some interactive tutorial would be awesome for such a complex game behind the scenes :3
Well done!
Awesome game! I played normal mode without paying much attention to morale or productivity. These two things were a bit hard to manage when they were only displayed on small colored icons. I also forgot what exact effect did each of the spots on the ship have. I'd prefer if they were marked somehow, apart from being held distinct thanks to (really nice) art. I also think that leaving crew members eating and drinking should not deplete the resources when they're already full - bad management of the crew is punishing enough for the player. At moments it also took some time to tell the crew apart and find the right guy. Some music and sounds would definitely help the game, the silence made it hard to really immerse into the management thingy.
I didnt really get what to do. The tutorial wasnt explaining me anything. Should there be any audio?
Pirate resource management is a good concept. I enjoyed while playing the game. For normal mode, every mechanic looks quite balanced but overall its easy to abuse one of them. For example, I only buy food with my gold and that is enough for finishing the game. Anyways, it's fun to play. Well done matey!
@fis Thank you for the feedback! The normal mode is designed in a way that most of the player can succeed in it. If you try the unfair mode you really need to understand the mechanics behind. We tried to adjust the difficulties to fit a large base of players :) A full fetched tutorial is planned for upcoming versions. Keep on sailing matey :skull:
Original idea! as many have said it would have been fun to have sounds effects, but the game is nice! I agreed also with @shakedimus about visual clues. Overall, good job!
@thejonu Thank you for playing! The mentioned small icons are only important for charisma and productivity. If a sailor has high charisma (green icon) he will influence other sailors in the same area. Well have a look at stopping food usage when the sailor is full. Im glad you liked it
@kate90 Sadly we were not able to implement sound yet due to short production time
Hello! Your game was played during my stream!
If you want to know the timestamp of when your game was played you can see it in this spreadsheet: https://tinyurl.com/yau8hjzn
And then look in my latest videos and find your game being play (after the current stream ends) https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos
Really fun to play but it was definitely lacking sound and music. Would have been great to have a jaunty sea shanty playing in the background and some piratey sound effects to go along with their mood, and when you board another ship. Otherwise great fun, and I hope you keep working on it.
Could use with a swap mechanic but was definitely a fun jaunty pirate time with some really interesting mechanics to manage.
I won and continued sailing to 300 progress HAHAHA I really enjoyed in it. sounds will make your game better for sure but it was good. Good Job.
I really like this game. With music it would be better but it's very cool! I found the treasure and continued
this game is really fun.. fresh and nice concept. the lack of sound have a huge impact on the game but hey, no one finishes everything in a jam.
I like how you have to balance resources. over all the run was too easy I think.. it needs more deep decisions and stuff. tell me if you want to continue developing this and you need ideas.
also I am creating a list with decision-based games. yours is added to my list. :) I will share it with you later!
edit : you might want to try my game. since it is decision-based as well
Those thirsty mongrels go through the rum like it's air. Proved to be quite tricky, but overall a really fun management game. As others have said, some audio would really go a long way towards making it feel more complete, but that's the nature of a JAM game, there's never enough time for all the things we want to implement. Nicely done!
They really like their rum more than life itself. Poetic
Nice game! Really enjoyed it. But the lack of sound (I know, you wrote there was no time) pulls down the overall experience. And the game (in normal mode) could have been a little bit more difficult. If you don't mind going on slowly then you can simply put one sailor into the crows nest and one steering the ship and the other one into bed and then replace when someones happiness is nearly down. After getting a fourth sailor it is even easier to simply operate the ship in two shifts. I never used rum and only bought food (and the fourth sailor) at the ports and had no problem winning the game.
I would suggest making the speed of the ship depending on one sailor on the helm and at least one sailor operating a sail. The guy in the crows nest shouldn't be generating speed. When no one is steering or operating the sail then ship isn't moving at all. Then for a fully operational ship you need at least three active sailors. I think it would be more challenging this way.
This is a pretty neat resource management game. It's a little easy, but I like how all the systems work together and how you constantly have to juggle crew-members. It would have been pretty cool if you could upgrade crew members, or choose ones with specific stats to hire.
Some audio would have made this great, I'm a sucker for pirate music and sea shanties. Good job!
A very nice game that reminded me of FTL a bit. I didn't quite understand what to do, but maybe that's because I don't know ships. Also the how to play menu wasn't very helpful. Unless my game was buggy out it just showed the game screen with red boxes over several elements.
Shame about the lack of shanties! I like me some pirates though, yaaaargh.
I like how it plays, though I had some issues getting the pirates to sometimes click on the middle sail.
Really funny game, quite addictive! it's a bit sad that there is no music.
Very good concept and fun to play. Hard to master too, haha. Pity it lacks in sounds, would contribute a lot to the humorous funny vibe that this game have. Other than that, very great job! Congrats!
I was so close to the treasure 'at the end of the progress bar' (there should be a big X there ;)) Very addictive! I really liked the style of the graphics, but thought the pirate faces somehow were out of style a little bit? I'm just being picky here though, the style was really very good and I'm just listing things that came to mind. Of course, as many suggested before, sound would make the mood much better. Great concept with a *lot* of potential, I think! Thanks!
Nice idea! Love the mechanic. Very simple and very efficient. The energy bars and resources are working very well. It's funny to see the compromise between let the people taking rest and put them as long as they can on work. It's cool to let new sailors coming on the boat on the trip. And manage the rhum and food ^^ A very pleasant little game well in the theme. And the tutorial is very well explained. It would be perfect with more feedback to understand that the boat is moving and better graphics and sounds. Congratulation, you three LudumDare sailors! :)
Love pirate games! And this one is quite good! I think if you add a bit of pirate music it could be really great. The game feels already well balanced, any player can win but must be focused all the time. The visual style looks funny and polished, although some additional animation would be nice.
Small UX suggestion, I sent a sailor over the plank by accident once, so in my opinion some sort of confirmation action would be nice to prevent this.
Congrats for such a great pirate entry!!
Pretty nice game! I like it has deep complexity. It's not what you usually see during jams. Good job!
Nice game ! The gameplay is quite addictive haha I had to play until I win
wt4.png
Nice use of the theme. Good job on balancing the game. The more you take sailors, the faster you can go but wow that's also a great way to have a mutiny haha :P I got lucky enough to loot enough gold to be able to keep them well hydrated ;) ;)
Hey! Played your game and loved it! want to know if you plan on expanding here's the feedback, sorry for the late post, I got sick and had to take a break https://youtu.be/lRO6eo6fBbM
