LD45 — Start with nothing

Little Robot Run by KunoNoOni 2019-10-11T02:32:59Z

Nice platformer game, well done ! :)

I particularly liked the different musics and sound effects. I completed the game without using the duck or the weapon (now that I wrote about it, I realized that the grey box was probably the weapon... I was wondering what it was ^^;).

The character was not responsive enough (for my taste). When I do a platformer in Unity, I generally set a "gravityScale" to 5 or so and increase the jump force. For this game, staying in the air for a while helped to pass the floating sentries though :)

Little Robot Run by KunoNoOni 2019-10-11T05:10:07Z

@kunonooni __> How did you get by the portal guardian without killing it?__

If you mean the one that stands in front of the blue door, I was just walking on the floor top-right of it (basically the roof of the room with the portal). I just jumped above it, and passed between the guardian and the blue door. There was enough space to go without hitting any collider. That was my first attempt, never really thought about it, and since I never fired the weapon in the game (I totally forgot there was a weapon), it seemed very natural to me :)

Yes, I realized that you can jump when touching the sides of the platforms, that helped going through the levels more quickly. Also, once you touched a ground, you can fall and jump later mid-air. I figured out that the jump was not based on whether or not the player is on the ground, but instead that the player was able to jump once, if it collided with a platform in any way.

Mastafoon! by Local Minimum 2019-10-12T15:03:02Z

Nice game :)

The first time I tried I was very confused. I didn't understand the pickup/drop mechanic. So, when I moved, the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 turned red. I just pressed the corresponding button and they turned green again. That's probably a bug, resetting the inventory slot even if there's nothing in it. That way, all I had to do was: move, 1, move, 1, move, 1, etc.. and I could go directly to the teleporter. I completed the game very quickly without any challenge, except for one level where I had to just end my turn many times until the enemies where in no position to block me until the teleporter.

Then I played a second time, trying to understand how it worked. Could figure out the maximum number of actions (5), and the pickup/drop mechanic. The water sound was a bit repetitive but, it was a nice puzzle game overall :)

Relationship Calculator by Gao Ming 2019-10-10T08:59:06Z

Nice little game. However, I wasn't very good at math ^^; I tried to input "50" in the middle of an operation but, only the 5 was taken, then the 0 did nothing :/

Grow quickly by congusbongus 2019-10-08T06:31:41Z

Great game ! Nice art and music. :)

It was bit difficult sometimes to face the direction I wanted. Also, I think that the watering and harvest cycles were too fast. There is almost no downtime. And all those crows were stressful ^^;

Train Transporters by Crazy046 2019-10-08T03:42:51Z

Hi! Good job on your game :)

Some feeback:

* Trains keep crashing when they are inside a station. * I tried the signal, but couldn't understand how they work. * A "Game Pause" or "Build Mode" option would have been nice, so that we can organize the traffic without having the trains moving around. * I don't know what makes a "Game Over, you moved 55 passengers". Is it when a station is full? It would have been nice to have a better indication of that (maybe a color code like green, yellow, orange, then red when a station is almost full).

Overall, that was fun to play but would benefit from more information on how to prevent the trains from being destroyed.

By the way, the macOs version works fine.

Zen Fish by Alchemic 2019-10-12T08:01:57Z

Nice and relaxing game. :) One problem I had is when there are too many fishes. They all stay at the top of the screen, waiting for food.

Thanks for Nothing by PhilStrahl 2019-10-09T05:00:57Z

Nice adventure game. Humor, narrative and music were great, so naturally the game felt too short... but for 48h that's understandable. I could find the 3 endings though. Good job on finding the time to make different endings.

A few notes:

* Some picked up items display a message (like the GameBoy), but that message disappear after a few seconds. Sometimes, the message disappeared before I could read it entirely. For better consistency, all messages should be discarded * I don' know if that's intentional but the character was always facing left. * Graphics could have been better, but that's definitely a style that I enjoyed.

Lastly, a big Thank You for making your videos. Thanks to you, I started participating in Ludum Dare (#40 was the first) and other game jams. I always re-watch your post-mortems before a game jam :) Keep up the very good work!

PS: MacOS version works fine.

Turtle's Quest by Yeti Kid 2019-10-08T02:13:26Z

Nice adventure game.

I think I'm stuck. I gave the sword to the hidden frog. I gave the water to the thirsty frog. I gave the teddy to the liar frog (it keeps promising me a coin, but I only received one! :P). I cannot pass the trees to see the frog with the ballon. I picked up a key, but can't enter the house. All I have is a jewel. I tried to interact with the fire but nothing happened.

Overall, a cute little experience :)

Flap to Survive by Bill Wheatley 2019-10-12T09:03:51Z

Well done :) I finished the game (reached the exit with 1,362 coins).

A few notes:

* The music volume is bit low. * The beginning of the game should be safer. I didn't know what to expect so the character fall, hit the ground and I was welcomed with a "Game Over", less than 2 seconds after starting the game. That's not a great experience :/ * I played on a Mac using a PS4 controller. There is no "A" or "B", which I assume are XBox controller buttons. I figured out which buttons are A and B, but that still confusing. Especially since the "B" button is used to start the game, and also to quit. I guess you didn't have a PS4 controller to test, and even if you had one, I'm not sure if there is a good way to display the correct button label on screen. (I haven't tried the new Input system in Unity... Is there something that indicates the type of controller?)

Overall, nice little game :)

PixelGod by SvartTand 2019-10-07T10:44:52Z

Good game :)

At first I tried to understand, but quickly the screen became a mess of pixels. I had a lot of fun trying the newly acquired possibilities and then applying lightning or lava on top of it.

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-07T07:43:42Z

@musicblox Thank you for playing! I'll try yours as well

I think I gave up on the "theme". At first the character would start with nothing at each level, acquiring the energy required to reach the next level. And then, going through the portal, that energy was lost... next level, same thing. That leads to the title "start with nothing, end with nothing", which I don't like, but I was way too tired to find something original in the last minutes of the submission hour.

I learned so much during those 2 days, and even though the game is very short and not very interesting, I'm quite proud I could publish as it is.

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-07T10:54:25Z

@congusbongus Thanks for the feedback !

I knew that kind of game existed but during the 48h I didn't take any reference from other games. Maybe I should have ^_^; Now that you mention Sokoban and that I saw some screenshot of it, I remember playing the one from 1984, with only EGA graphics (pink and cyan).

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-07T10:58:06Z

@romes Thank you :) Yes, the puzzles... I wish I could make more of them, but I only had a few hours before the submission when I began working on the puzzles. I know I should have started with that first, but I really wanted to make a complete game .

By the way, creating puzzles at 5am... 2 hours before submission... while being totally new at designing puzzle, and mentally tired... was a bad idea :)

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-07T11:02:48Z

@nestral Thank you for the feedback ! :)

At first, the movement was not repeating (you had to press several times to keep moving). But then I allowed faster movements. I agree, slower movements could have been better. Especially for a very short game like this, there is no need to hurry.

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-09T03:42:33Z

@toppervideogames , @skemp , @yeti-kid

Thank you all for playing and your feedback ! That encourages me to not give up on puzzle games completely. Actually, I might continue development on this one for a little while.

If not already, I'll also play your games soon :)

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-11T05:14:46Z

@belug23 Thank you for playing ! I'm glad you liked it. :)

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-12T05:27:51Z

@theinkskeleton Thank you for playing ! I wish I had more time to really create some challenging levels. Maybe next time.

@goldenglade Thank you ! I'm glad you enjoyed it. This time I wanted to create a complete game with proper home screen and ending screen. I spent too much time on the tutorial... 5 levels out of 8 are tutorial levels ^^; Next time I'll manage my time better.

@alchemic Thank you for playing :) I'll try to make more puzzle games in the future (even if I'm not really good at it), instead of my usual platformers.

@hajden Thank you for trying my game :) Yes, It's very short... There's even one level that I thought was challenging, but after submission my wife tried it, and she solved it in a way I never thought about, more quickly than my solution ^^;

SNEN - Start with Nothing, End with Nothing by FredFilo 2019-10-12T14:41:39Z

@local-minimum Thank you for playing and your feedback :)

I tried the 2 methods (button pressed and button down). Obviously "Button pressed" didn't have any problem with speed, but that was a lot of keys to press. In order to navigate the levels more quickly I decided to go with "button down". I adjusted the speed so that it's not too fast but I think I made a mistake just before making the final builds. The speed is indeed too fast.

It's not something that prevent the player from completing the game, so I won't change it until the rating period is over.

Thanks again :)

Naked Platformer by Jhoffis 2019-10-07T10:11:17Z

Good job :)

At first I didn't realize that you can run with Shift, so I died 20 times at the first spikes. After that I was holding shift constantly.

A few advices:

* If Run (Shift) is required most of the time, just remove it and increase the normal speed. * Flip you character sprite when he's going left. * Add checkpoints. * Make the beginning of the level very easy so that the player can familiarize with the controls. * The game freezes when you reach "You Won".

the universe, i think by TheInkSkeleton 2019-10-12T05:41:04Z

@theinkskeleton Once again, thank you for playing my game. I came here to try yours but unfortunately I'm on MacOS and I don't have a Windows machine. For your future games, please consider making an HTML5 version as well :)

Light your way out by Suchista 2019-10-12T08:36:14Z

Great music and sound effects, I enjoyed that puzzle game a lot :)

From Nothing by arkinrev 2019-10-11T02:53:12Z

Nice game :) I'm a fan of the Diablo games, so it was easy for me to enjoy it. However, it was quite dark and I think can easily be confused at the start of the game without the torch.

A few notes:

* Because it's dark, it's difficult to understand the terrain. Sometimes there's what looks like a cliff ahead of you, and the collision system prevents you from falling. But it's difficult to see that on screen, so you just wonder why you can't move forward. * The enemies are not attacking, so I didn't felt any pressure. * I stopped playing after gathering 12 skulls. I don't know if it's endless or if the goal is to kill all enemies, or if there's an exit we have to find. :/

Overall I enjoyed the mood of it, but it just lacks some challenge to become interesting. But well done for a 48h game! :)

Zero Equals Zero by TopperVideoGames 2019-10-08T04:51:33Z

Cool game :)

I had almost the exact same concept for my game... for the first 24h. But I couldn't find a way to make it fun (you did by including platformer elements), so I changed for a more classic puzzle game.

There is one level with many 1 and -1 and you need to reach 2.... when I have `1`, I get the `-` operation, then I run into a `-1` from the side... the result `-2` ?!?. Shouldn't that be `1 - (-1) = 2` ?

Note: to avoid being stuck when the character collides with vertical surfaces, you can add to its collider a PhysicsMaterial that has 0 friction.

Mighty Mighty Bot by JustusPan 2019-10-07T09:24:32Z

Hi!, nice and cute game. The music is great. :)

For a platformer, controls are the most important. I found that the jump was frustrating as it didn't allow me to move while in the air. It's sometimes difficult to see the dangers (spikes). Try to clearly show what is safe and what is not.

The bot with the gun was funny... instant death on sight !

Good job !

Empty Level by shevek 2019-10-08T01:11:14Z

Well done ! :) That was quite challenging sometimes, but after learning some tactics I went to the "Victory".

I like the fact that you can place anything anywhere and experiment with different possible solutions.

Now, some feedback:

* The sound effects volume was a bit low. At first I thought there was no sound. * It's sometimes difficult to click on the items in the menu. * I wonder if making the items aligned on a grid would make the game better (easy to align items) or worse (the game becomes too easy?).

The Unknown Nude by romes 2019-10-10T08:25:07Z

Well done :) I like the music and atmosphere of this game.

I don't know if that's a bug: When I'm strong enough and the merchant asks me to fight: I win and the merchant gives me 2 food rations. But since the merchant stays for a while, I can click on him, enter another fight right away, win and receive 2 more rations ! :D I did that several times so food was no longer an issue.

I also got the "answer to life is nothing, thank you unknown nude" ending :)

Meager Genesis by Hajden 2019-10-12T08:14:12Z

Beautiful. There is not much gameplay but it was a nice experience overall :)

Orb Override by MusicBlox 2019-10-07T08:20:57Z

The command line at the start is interesting, but it needs more instructions. I figured out the following:

* LocateEnemy() * ClaimOrbNearEnemy() --> it gives you the orb number (ex: 3) * SelectOrb(3) --> the one that you own * ListTargetOrbs() --> gives you the number of orbs nearby * Foreach near orb number: InspectOrb(number) --> gives you the number of peeps. Choose one (with low number of peeps?). * TargetOrb(the number you chose) * SelectOrb(the number you chose) * ListTargetOrbs() * etc...

After a few turns you have enough to GUIUprade(), and see the visual representation. At that point I was completely lost. I didn't know if I was blue or red... left click turns an orb to green, right click turns an orb to red. But I could only do that on blue orbs, so I guess I was blue.

Overall, the concept is interesting, good job  It just needs more instructions about how to play. And also, as others said: Having the command line auto-select itself after each command so that you can type again right away.

You start/end with nothing by Skemp 2019-10-08T01:49:53Z

Nice game ! The music and art are cute :)

The first time I finished, I was disqualified for having some pants :'( After many retries I finally finished naked and was... 712th ??? ^^

Some feedback:

* I think you should be able to throw your items even if there's no danger in front of you. I try to get rid of my pants before the finish line but without any bear, that's was not possible. * The first big bear, when you try to throw your hat, the character says "no way dude!" and you have to click a second time.

At The Beginning by Flokami 2019-10-10T11:27:40Z

Weird but funny. :) I haven't played much that kind of games, but it reminded me of the guy in the blue book in Myst.

Beauty of Creation by RiggleRigged 2019-10-10T08:50:49Z

Nice little game. Good job on your first LD entry :) I stopped after reaching level 4, I don't know if there is an ending.

Circle Fight by Nestral 2019-10-10T08:31:12Z

Hi, I would have liked to try and rate your game but I'm on macOS and I don't have any Windows PC. Since you're using Unity, please consider making a macOS build or an HTML5 build for your next game. :)

Nothing by motormousegames 2019-10-08T01:57:23Z

Hi! The Itch.io link leads to a 404 page. I tried to check if you have a game for LD45 on itch, but there's only one for MiniGameJam. :/

Blob of nothing by Zanthous 2019-10-10T09:42:02Z

Nice game :) The music was very relaxing.

At first, I didn't understand the difference between the grey and yellow spikes. Then I remember we could shoot needles. There was not much explanation about how to play the game, or what we have to do... but, after a few minutes, I could understand the gameplay and the "x/6" score was clearly for the starts to reach. So I think you did a good job at making a game that people can understand and enjoy. Well done ! :)

Nothing to Lose! (except your deposit) by monsterjail 2019-10-10T11:43:51Z

Well done ! :) It would have been better with some sound effects when nothing hits the walls :)

Note: When you finish the game, if you restart it right away, when you get to the first level, there's the "Move mouse to the Nothing" message but nothing happens when I do it. Animations are still running, but I just can't get the Nothing.

Cascade by Goldenglade 2019-10-12T06:06:58Z

Very good game. Well done ! :) I wish there was a music and some sound effects in the menus.

As others said, graphics are beautiful and gameplay is quite smooth. I also was a bit confused by the sound effect played when someone takes damage. It's difficult to know if you hit the enemy, or if you were hit.

LD46 — Keep it alive

Mutiny by Cataractar 2020-04-23T11:26:12Z

Very nice game. :) As others said, some music and sound effects would have been great. My only concern was about the moving the pirates. Maybe sometimes I wasn't on the right spot, but the pirate went back to his position before I started moving him.

The Fire by FredFilo 2020-04-23T09:48:54Z

@duncan-3 Thanks for playing and your feedback! :) Yes, the fire status (how much combustible left) was on the roadmap, but 30 minutes before the end of submission hour I was still coding the win/lose conditions... so, that important information didn't make it. ^-^; It should have been there from the beginning though... I'll keep that in mind for the next one.

@pilarius Thanks for your feedback! :) After the jam, I didn't upload the thumbnails and cover image... and work got in the way. I just uploaded them.

@barrier Thank you playing! :) Yes, if you don't do anything the fire will die. Every second it loses combustible, and the monkeys reduce it even more. As I wrote above, I didn't make an indicator showing how much combustible is left in the fire, and that was a big mistake. As for how to play, that's another mistake because the game doesn't really start until you read the third note. From the beginning I had tooltips appearing above pickup/actionable objects when you approach them... but in the end I didn't show them because I didn't like the font and I wanted people to figure out by themselves. Instead of text, I should make them glow to be noticed.

-----

Note to myself: Don't let the lose condition possible after you won the game... If you get rescued and let the game as is, the fire will die eventually and the "game over" screen will appear. ^o^;
