Interesting box pushing puzzle game, I can't see the theme too much in it because you are just pushing boxes and grabbing lightbulbs. Where does the name "Start with nothing, End with Nothing" come from? Its fun, but might have been better with a different theme.

fredfilo 2019-10-07 07:43

@musicblox Thank you for playing! I'll try yours as well

I think I gave up on the "theme". At first the character would start with nothing at each level, acquiring the energy required to reach the next level. And then, going through the portal, that energy was lost... next level, same thing. That leads to the title "start with nothing, end with nothing", which I don't like, but I was way too tired to find something original in the last minutes of the submission hour.

I learned so much during those 2 days, and even though the game is very short and not very interesting, I'm quite proud I could publish as it is.

Yay sokoban! This one was pretty well made, although the puzzles could be a little more elegant imo. Cute animations and character design!

romes 2019-10-07 10:17

the graphics are very smooth! i thought the puzzles to be pretty interesting despite what you say about them not being so...! i liked it!

nestral 2019-10-07 10:22

I like the puzzles you made, they were pretty fun and enjoyable to complete. But moving was to fast I think, maybe you should have made it a bit slower. Very good puzzle overall!

fredfilo 2019-10-07 10:54

@congusbongus Thanks for the feedback !

I knew that kind of game existed but during the 48h I didn't take any reference from other games. Maybe I should have ^_^; Now that you mention Sokoban and that I saw some screenshot of it, I remember playing the one from 1984, with only EGA graphics (pink and cyan).

fredfilo 2019-10-07 10:58

@romes Thank you :) Yes, the puzzles... I wish I could make more of them, but I only had a few hours before the submission when I began working on the puzzles. I know I should have started with that first, but I really wanted to make a complete game .

By the way, creating puzzles at 5am... 2 hours before submission... while being totally new at designing puzzle, and mentally tired... was a bad idea :)

fredfilo 2019-10-07 11:02

@nestral Thank you for the feedback ! :)

At first, the movement was not repeating (you had to press several times to keep moving). But then I allowed faster movements. I agree, slower movements could have been better. Especially for a very short game like this, there is no need to hurry.

This is a nice little puzzle game! The most novel mechanic was having blocks that could only be pushed from certain sides. It was easy to see some linked blocks had a specific colors on them, though that can be hard to notice. It was over before it got really interesting, but the 48 hour time limit does have that effect! Very nice and polished visually, the linked blocks could have an animation on them when they are pushed. Nice job!

skemp 2019-10-08 10:19

Nice game for 48 hour jam. Linked blocks are a nice touch. Puzzles are also well paced. Sounds could be improved, but a overall this is a nice game.

yeti-kid 2019-10-08 21:04

I really liked the game. I loved the different type of blocks that added a lot to the game and made you think. Wish there were more levels and would love to see how it would've grown with more time. I am definitely look at more of the games you have made and look forward to see what comes in the future.

@toppervideogames , @skemp , @yeti-kid

Thank you all for playing and your feedback ! That encourages me to not give up on puzzle games completely. Actually, I might continue development on this one for a little while.

If not already, I'll also play your games soon :)

belug23 2019-10-10 14:11

Finished it! it's the first of this jam that I can get an ending! great work I really liked it!

fredfilo 2019-10-11 05:14

@belug23 Thank you for playing ! I'm glad you liked it. :)

theinkskeleton 2019-10-11 05:38

It's a nice short game! I really liked it! The art style was cute and smooth, the few sounds that it has sound great, and the puzzles were really interesting, at first I thought this would be incredibly easy, but at the end I had to think quite something! So congrats!

goldenglade 2019-10-11 06:51

Its a very enjoyable game, and a nice difficulty for a set of eight initial levels, teaching the player the mechanics of the game at an adequate pace. The graphics are pleasing to the eye, and the audio present is pleasing to the ear, though perhaps audio could be added for the menu buttons. Overall, very nice work.

alchemic 2019-10-11 07:03

This is super cool and has a lot of potential. I love puzzle games like this!

hajden 2019-10-11 07:09

Cute game, a bit on the short and easy side

fredfilo 2019-10-12 05:27

@theinkskeleton Thank you for playing ! I wish I had more time to really create some challenging levels. Maybe next time.

@goldenglade Thank you ! I'm glad you enjoyed it. This time I wanted to create a complete game with proper home screen and ending screen. I spent too much time on the tutorial... 5 levels out of 8 are tutorial levels ^^; Next time I'll manage my time better.

@alchemic Thank you for playing :) I'll try to make more puzzle games in the future (even if I'm not really good at it), instead of my usual platformers.

@hajden Thank you for trying my game :) Yes, It's very short... There's even one level that I thought was challenging, but after submission my wife tried it, and she solved it in a way I never thought about, more quickly than my solution ^^;

Cute game. I much liked how the character got happy as it filled itself up. My main issue was that half of the time when I pressed a direction I moved two tiles rather than one. I think this might be because you track if the button is down, not if the button was pressed. The former is OK and can be nice if there's a limit on the speed that it registers to about a half second or so, but now I almost destroyed my chances to solve the puzzles several times because of this.

fredfilo 2019-10-12 14:41

@local-minimum Thank you for playing and your feedback :)

I tried the 2 methods (button pressed and button down). Obviously "Button pressed" didn't have any problem with speed, but that was a lot of keys to press. In order to navigate the levels more quickly I decided to go with "button down". I adjusted the speed so that it's not too fast but I think I made a mistake just before making the final builds. The speed is indeed too fast.

It's not something that prevent the player from completing the game, so I won't change it until the rating period is over.

Thanks again :)

This is a really well put together puzzle game! The controls feel great, the graphics are cute and good looking, and the puzzles had a nice progression to them. Love it!
