Game itself is really fun and has a huge potential. I still can not understand how to you get different types of shooters. I can only buy ground shooter. However, I really liked it. good job :)

@nightjolt each stage the tree grows you will get a new tower available. you press the down key to swap between the towers
I've had so much fun playing this game! I would definitely play this more and I never hated so much a turtle in my life ): This was a really fun experience good job! I wasn't aware about the other types of shooters before commenting here, but I got to wave 8 only with ground shooter. The progression of the game is really good too, I feel like things are getting harder and I want to protect that Oak with all my life!
@stell thanks for playing. I'm realzing I should of done a better job on indicating how to switch towers. But that's what is great about gamejams, you get great feedback.
This game is very enjoyable, but it isn't good at explaining what to do. I figured it out, but pretty late into my playthrough when you unlock blowers (nice PVZ reference by the way). I also loved the tree's face, it was really charming, and the enemies sprites were great, with the frog being my favorite.
the game looks super cute! Especially the frogs and yoda
This game was really fun and charming. I think it might benefit from having faster waves of enemies, and it might be better to see more consistent sprite work (some have lines around their sprite, others don't). Great job!
I had a lot of fun! Platforming was tight, music was awesome, sprites were cute, gameplay loop felt good. I only have a couple criticisms: some sprites have outlines, and some don't, and the inconsistency is a little jarring for me. However, I do really like the sprites :) Also, it seems like the waves are slightly too long. Finally, the map seemed kind of unnecessarily spread out, and I kind of wish I could see it on one screen. Great work!
@camden-obertop and @picross
Yeah I think our thinking in that was making the main character and enemies pop out mar, but I can see what you mean how them being different could be distracting that's good feedback.
Yeah the implementation of waves actually changing was one of the last things added so it wasn't tested as much as I liked. I actually never even beat the game until after submission haha. I was worried it might not be beatable, mostly b/c I kept fixing things so I never made it to the end lol
Great game! one of my favorites so far. we absolutely loved the art and gameplay. would totally love to play a full version of this game
this game is so fun. it is very good. good job.
Needless to say, the pixel art is amazing!!! And the music fits for the game too :D Now there is one problem. That is that the cursor is really hard to see. Since it is white on a white bg, it blends in very well. Try changing the color or something. Also, the first 5 waves were too slow in my opinion. Maybe they are supposed to be like gathering rounds, but the 6th wave was 3 times harder than the last one. But REALLY fun game. Nice job
That's a nice platformer tower defense, was fun to play, protected the oak successfully!
What about the higher islands though? Is there a way to get the resources from the ones floating above?
Really enjoyed playing this. It was good fun and a decent level of challenge. Probably the longest I've spent playing a jam game so far. It took a bit too log for the tree to start growing but once it did I stuck with it until the end. It was sometimes hard to see the cursor depending on what you're hovering over, and finally I didn't realise you could use towers until I read these comments. Though that may have added ti the challenge :)
@firellon Yes, actually the player can fly with extra '*jumps*'.
Cute little game, I really dig the character design on both the player and the enemies. Especially the bomb slugs. Really cool! The pixelart was really good the sounds sounded good. Congrats on finishing
Such a good game, we can feel how every team member participated, good job ! (Making the ressources around the map repop and the flower a little more tanky could be great, and please make the cursor more visible, I lost because I couldn't shoot precisely x)
Pretty fun overall. You have some nice mechanics in there. I feel the sight should be a different color. It blends in too much w/ the background
Nice game. The material collection mixed with defending the tree is fun, if a bit on the easy end. It has a very effective satisfying gameplay loop.
Really nice game, feels brilliantly polished for such a small development time. It's a nice 2d, sidescrolling twist to typical tower defence games. My only gripe is the crosshair is quite difficult to see against the background, but thanks for making this game I had great fun playing it:)
I didn't know about the extra flower types before reading the comments so I ended up beating the game with just the starter ones. Also, the cursor is too hard to see against the background.
This is a very good game! The balance between the distinct factors of the game is very good. The types of enemies are well designed and times and compositions of the waves as well. The only complaint I've is that the cursor is very hard to see, I don't know where I'm aiming at. It took me a while for me to realize how I could get the flowers and dirt of the top part. Otherwise, solid entry!
Hello! Your game was played during my stream!
If you happened to miss me playing the game, you can go to this spreadsheet to find what timestamp I played your game https://tinyurl.com/yau8hjzn
And then look in my latest videos and find your game being play (after the current stream ends) https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos
Cute graphics, fun game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/POu9WBNgI08
One of my favourites I've played so far. Charming graphics, awesome music fits the mood perfectly. I finished this in 8 rounds using only basic shooter. I didn't know there was more of those. :D I agree with others that I lost my cursor more than once.
I had a good time playing it! My only critic is that the mouse is not contrasted to the background, so seeing it was hard. Anyways great job!
love the game, great job!
Great game! I love the triple jump, solid mechanics, sound and graphics.
Great game. The soundtrack was especially good. The only annoyance was the mouse got lost in the background easily.
@xbcw thank you so much. The cursor unfortunately was due to having a different color background then changing it but not changing the cursor color to fit in better.
if you want to listen to the soundtrack you can listen to it here https://disomikron.bandcamp.com/album/oak-defenders-ld46-jam
The graphics is really enchanting. Cool stuff for real... So is that baby Yoda? it is right?
Soo... let's just start that tower defense are not really my thing (but I enjoyed a few), but platformers are, so it's cool to see a platformer, and I like the resource management part. So .. let's start.
I played a run that lasted 11 waves. I scored poorly also because I didn't really get how to use the commands for the first 60 seconds.
The movements of Baby yoda are pretty cool, I don't understand what's the use of TRIPLE jump, but anyway. The space is too huge, while every single enemy just crawl and shooting with the mouse is a complication you could avoid since it's hard (and pretty useless, I say) to aim any other direction than straight ahead (if you really want 45degrees up), it was frustrating.
The game is pretty NOT rewarding since you need to wait 5 waves of collectable resources in order to see some growth of what should be the real protagonist here: the Oak (extremely cute btw). I wanted to leave the game in the first 3 waves .. this means you should have lured me in and reward in the FIRST succedeed wave.
the turrets are pretty weak, and they seem to shoot randomly not helping you at all. This is frustrating, mixed up with the fact that if the enemy touches you, you can't shoot anymore.
The huge space unused unfortunately make the platformer part wasted :(
It would have been cool if Yoda could jump on the Oak branches and the Oak could have helped in defending himself being a symbolism of the nature that endure on the attack of men!
Yoda and the force will always win, though. Thanks for the entry and good luck!
@notapixelstudio thank you for the feedback and sorry for the frustrations.
The triple jump is used to reach the higher up platforms to gather the resources up there. so every wave those resources fill up. you also get resources from killing enemies.
You can see it in action in this video
https://youtu.be/umm7m9KA4n8
Yeah the stages of the tree based on growth which 100 growth wins, and each stage of 25 the tree grows, but the first stage should of been sooner maybe like 15 or 20 growth. And in the early waves there are less enemies so you don't get resources as quickly as the later waves.
You can actually jump on the leaves once the tree grows bigger Screen Shot 2020-04-23 at 2.22.50 PM.png
Top 5 jam entries so far! Loved playing it, the only two improvements i could think of is 1. Add a tooltip to tell me that i can triple jump since i had no idea until the Dev mentioned it in Twitch Chat. 2. Make the items that air units drop, fall to the ground. Overall, excellent execution and game :D
Nice job! Looks and sounds awesome. Impressive.
Loved this game, played it live on stream and gave most feedback there. But i loved tha graphics and the dynamic music. The whole thing made for a good experience!
Some small details can be improved a little bit as already said in the comments, like the cursor's contrast with the background, the amount of unused spaces, and the lack of information given to the player. But the graphics and sounds are really nice and it's a cool implementation of Tower Defense and Platform genres. It's very fun to play and very enjoyable overall!
Really nice game, liked the many different towers to defend the tree. The animations work great and music does well in signifying when the next wave is. Found a few areas hard too reach but other than that great game!! Well done!!
Very polished, very good music, sound and graphics.
Nothing to say special that hasn't been said in the previous comments I've read. I just want to say that the controls did really feel weird to me, jumping with W while you use the Space key to interact is just sooo strange, you could just use E to interact and Space to jump. But overall, this was fun to play, pretty long to get into since waves are coming very slowly and it takes time to have the first rewards, but well executed and pretty !
@saering that's good feedback about the jumping. I watched someone stream the game and they made the same feedback, so that's something to definitely consider if we ever do more with this or for future updates.
yeah the waves could of used a bit more work, that was pretty much one of the last things to get tweaked. originally they just spewed enemies out the same rate all the time and had no difference in waves or when the tree grows.
And I realized b/c of how we are limiting the number of enemies we spawn in the earlier waves, you get less resources so it takes longer to grow your tree. but in the later waves when the tree is bigger we have more enemies and more resources so we can grow the tree bigger faster.
Well that was a load of fun! The game play loop is simple and fun, controls handle well, and the music was good! I had fun. Great job! ldjampic7.png
Awesome game !!!! I-LOVE-IT ! Very fun to play Very dynamic, very clean, the tree is really cool :)
Very cute sprite art. The music is really original and fitting, I especially love how seamless the dynamic transitions are. Cool take on a tower defense game, it definitely feels more frantic than most. I think having a way to replace/replant turrets once purchased would be good though.
One of my favorite so far. I gotta say I had basically the identical idea for my game (although I didn't have time to implement the actual planting mechanics), right down to the little green guy! Ya'll should check it out!
Very cute graphics and sounds. I enjoyed playing this game, quite addictive!
Pretty fun! I played it longer than expected!
Pretty fun, but it was confusing that the tree didn't grow automatically. I first had to hold down S, and then it worked fine every time after that (without me holding down S). So, the unlocking of new slots and new tower types is confusing until you try to grow the main tree. Also the 'towers' are purchased with dollars, but the dollar amount the player has isn't displayed, and I wonder why this isn't done with the resources you collect already for the main tree. I did manage to complete the game, but it was quite difficult since I only started growing the main tree from round 3.
I saw this game played on some streams before i played it myself. It is a rather simple idea, but very well implemented, especially for a jam. The game looks really cool, moving around feels very nice and the music is the cherry on top. Really well done!
Good game, it was a nice mix of platforming and tower defense, though it often boiled down to me just running back and forth. I would've like to have the aiming circle a little bolder, because there were a couple times when I lost track of it. I always had too many resources, so you could've had the waves start sooner. Other than those little niggles, I definitely enjoyed it.
Wonderful game! The graphics and the music are amazing, and the concept fit the theme very well. I really enjoyed playing it! :)
@mika-la-grand yeah some of the mechanics I realized aren't fully explain that well unfortunately.
The resources you collect are on the top left and during the calm phase it tells you what each resource does. The one to buy plants is the fertilizer/poo
Neat little tower defence game. I really like the silly music, it's particularly good in the main menu. Moving around feels pretty good, though it wasn't immediately obvious that the player could jump multiple times. Also, disabling shooting after the player gets hit is a bit frustrating, I'd make sure that doesn't happen. Otherwise great little game, I'd love to see it expanded with more enemy types.
FYI: Your web version appears to cut off the sides of the game, not sure if you can fix that or not but I figure you'd like to know.
@ryannielson thank you for playing. Originally nothing happened to the player from enemies so you were invincible. It was kind of a last minute thing to add in some kind of negative effect for being hit. So not a ton of thought was put into it.
I think if we had done a proper stun effect with an animation where the player got knocked down on the ground and couldn't move or if they had stars around your head or something to indicate it better to the player. I only managed to implement some flashing and made the player slightly jump to indicate you were stunned.
another idea we had was that you would lose resources when hit, but since we had 3 resources, I wasn't sure how we'd choose what resources you lost, possibly you lose a few of each or something of that effect.
I know the main menu specifically was done last minute so it unfortunately had a different aspect than the main game which does cut the sides off. but I didn't realize it was in the main game.
Thank you for the feedback.
Just reading your comment about stunning and I think it might have been too much of a last minute decision, as getting hit stuns you also from rebuilding plants and in general making it way harder to recover when you're being overun once.
But besided that I enjoyed your game a lot! There are quite a few games with protecting/building trees themes (so not a high score in that regard), but this one might be my favorite of these games. Maybe I wouldn't start the waves with a timer, as it makes collecting resources and building trees (and reading the descriptions for first time players) more stressfull and I don't see how that supports the game, but still, this game is so far in my Top 5.
EDIT: Oh, I forgot, there seems to be something funky going on when you restart the game. The cursor doesn't seem to react anymore.
Like for a big fan of tower defence games :) Thanks for fun!
@le-don thanks again, I will have to check out the cursor bug.
Also was curious about the theme rating, would you say you vote based on adherence to the theme, and uniqueness of how the theme is applied. I actually hadn't thought about the uniqueness of theme when voting but that's an interesting metric to apply, b/c I was only thinking about adherence and execution of the theme but I have noticed there are several ideas which seem to be in many games so that I might try to use that in my voting as well, thanks for giving your reasoning
I think my wording might have been a little misplaced, as I think you nailed the theme very well. It's in the Innovation category that I only gave 3.5 stars (while the rest is a clear 4 or even 4.5), as there are quite a few games with trees. I hope that clears it up :).
Love this game. The graphics are amazing. The controls are really smooth(I love the triple jump ), and the gameplay in general is really fun. Nice work. In my top 3 at the moment
Amazing lookingh game, engaging gameplay, really cool. Great job!
A nice little tower defence game! Great job limiting the number of art assets you needed so you could focus on quality (though there are still quite a few assets, well done!)
Very nice game. I enjoyed it a lot. The art was amazing and the tree was very cute. The controls felt really smooth and satisfying. I would really enjoy more of the platformer things in the game so the mix of the tower defense and platformer would be more bold.
Nice game! Very well polished. Only thing to add is a mouse pointer bigger and easier to see!
I really liked the gameplay of this game! I like how because your main goal is protecting your sapling, instead of also having to protect yourself the player doesn't have a health bar, but in fact can get stunned! Really good design! The graphics were also very aesthetically pleasing!
The polish of your game is also very good, one minor suggestion would be to add some more screen shake. The different enemies were also very good, however sometimes it appeared as though the healthbar wasn't there but they still had one hit left, this was probably only a visual bug and it didn't take away from my experience overall!
Also, maybe earlier on some more verticality could be added in, as the jump didn't feel too important which was a shame as it felt very well polished and fun to use!
Overall, I had a very fun time playing this game, and its an amazing jam entry!
This is awesome, I played to the end to see the huge tree! I'm really impressed by the artwork, enemy variety, and character designs. Also a huge fan of how the game music fades between the wave version and the calm version.
I felt that the game was lacking some form of upgrade to the main character's attack - there's a lot possible there like fire rate, bullet size, and so on, that would be super interesting to see and keep me playing!
Great job overall!
@dvdfu Super glad you enjoyed the game.
We actually had this idea that we had to cut due to the time constraints of the jam. We wanted to have option where you could grow fruit on the tree that would give you random perks/upgrades.
like we might of not of started out with a triple jump from the beginning and that would be a fruit you could grow, or things like you said faster fire-rate, more damage, possible cheaper cost of planting the plants and such.
maybe even modifiers like explosive enemies where when you destroy an enemy it has a chance to explode and damage nearby enemies. Or lower gravity so you could be more floaty and glide across the map with ease.
This was great! Loved seeing all the different growth phases of the tree, it really made one invested in its continued survival. Though I didn't realise you could swap the towers out (managed to do one by accident in the game but thought they were randomly spawning like that) until I read some of the comments here. Might have made things easier in the long run, but I made it to the end all the same. It was really fun. Stellar work.
The game was really fun and it looked good. Also the music was well fitting with the change of music during the building and wave phases. I would've liked a possibility to remove towers/plants to replace them by other towers. I had a good time while defending and watching the tree growing.
So pretty! Love the graphics. One of my favorite games I've played this jam -- I love seeing the progress through the growth of the tree.
Thanks for submitting your game for me to play on my livestream!
