Really neat idea! The game has a nice atmosphere to it!

lukebenkart 2020-04-21 15:31

This game has a really nice mood to it. It was cool to see how you could capture depression in that way.

phoenix-fireflower 2020-04-21 15:46

A charming little game.

It felt like the idea came from your own personal experiences.

isayneigh 2020-04-21 18:06

@phoenix-fireflower you're correct. The hardest part is really trying to write it in a way that makes the player feel it, especially in 3 days :joy:

warabii 2020-04-21 18:40

Wow. That was... Quite an experience. Thank you for sharing even if you couldn't finish it. I wish I could go play after Day 13

jajo 2020-04-22 14:07

I really think you might be on to something with the format of this. Hope you keep at it :)

exainz 2020-04-22 15:27

the animation of this game are too good to play.... with the silly font style and the art of music are also good... overall the game and the use of theme was fantastic...

sunnray 2020-04-22 19:49

I enjoyed playing it. At first playthrough I managed to get her sad, but on the second she stayed hopeful, and cooked a cake (I noticed that the result of the activity changed too!). Font was a bit hard to read through, but overall art and feel is amazing, I hope you will keep working on it.

pillitoka 2020-04-22 20:22

Love the hand drawn art style and the change in colours to represent mood. simple and effective.

john-snyder 2020-04-22 21:13

I absolutely love the art style and I love that the overall atmosphere and story made me feel like there was weight to the choices presented for me. I also like what you were going for with the theme of the jam. I guess the only issue I had was that the game just stopped and din't give you a way to restart the game without exiting and booting it back up. Overall though very good job!

isayneigh 2020-04-22 21:17

@john-snyder yes that pains me I couldn't get that in. I tried to explain it in the game description. I spent too much time on some of the decision logic and I never got to add a proper ending. It's something I'm working on now. Thanks for playing and the feedback!

notapixelstudio 2020-04-22 21:31

I want to vote, I want to find out more about this game. But the only build available is for Windows, and I don't have a Windows. I wish you could give the chance to play. Or at least a video I can watch. A web version? Did you use a game engine ? sad :(

Thanks for the entry, though.

isayneigh 2020-04-22 22:09

@notapixelstudio oh no, sorry! I will try to get a web version. That's what I wanted to do initially but there was some issues with resource management that I didn't have time to work out. Thanks for trying, hopefully I can get a web version that's playable.

izokia 2020-04-23 08:32

The weird art style has quite a bit of charm to it! Funny yet interesting game play. Had a lot of fun pal\ying

darkemerald 2020-04-23 13:43

Quite interesting idea. I like the idea and the realization of this.

x-c 2020-04-23 13:58

Great atmosphere, great music, and a good game experience. Faced with bug, restarted the game several times, then I realized that the “Continue” icon just disappears) Otherwise, everything is great. Could it be worth placing the Continue icon elsewhere? Once I accidentally clicked on it and then immediately on the inscription behind it, when there was a choice of what to do.

isayneigh 2020-04-23 14:09

@x-c  that's a good idea. I can see how having the continue in the same spot as the actions would cause issues. I'll see if I can improve on that.

Regarding the "Continue" button disappearing, that was intentional so that users *have* to read the story. But actually...it might be better to just not hide it and trust that the user will read it through (at least the first time).

pilarius 2020-04-23 23:36

The game looks very interesting could you add an WebGl version of it? It would probably attract more players to try it out :)

isayneigh 2020-04-24 05:42

@pilarius Initially I avoided it because there was a memory management issue, possibly because of the scripts being packaged with the game. I moved those to a hosted location and now they're getting pulled via request. But for some reason the calls fail *only* in itch.io. Still going to work on it some, but appreciate the feedback. Sorry you're unable to play!

trexxak 2020-04-24 07:21

Charming art! Is that font your own handwriting? It's so fitting to the whole ensemble and really ties everything together.

Also, please don't be mad, but your game really invokes some deep emotions, so I will have to play the second time through another time D:

pilarius 2020-04-24 08:14

@isayneigh No worries, thanks for the effort :)

morandigame 2020-04-24 10:19

Really like this art style and simple design of gameplay. They fit together so well. One suggestion, maybe try to make the feedback of player's choice more instant, or try displaying some metrics that elaborates the influences.Sometimes it feels that even the character struggled to do something, it's in vain. Look forward to more content and hand-writings of this style.Great work~ p.s. Love to know what you think of my entry

isayneigh 2020-04-24 12:52

@trexxak it's not my own handwriting. I would've liked that, but making your own typeface is tough so I just opted for a free one. Also i'm happy the game invoked emotion (though I hope it wasn't a negative trigger :worried: ). I really wanted to convey feelings of helplessness and depression in the game, and I knew it'd be tough since i'm not a writer.

@morandigame Thanks for the feedback, i'll look into that. I technically had that to begin with but decided to take it out so it was more immersive. You can see one of the screenshots on the game listing above still has the bars :joy:. Also, i'm otw to play your entry right now

linluk 2020-04-24 15:00

really enjoyed the game, sad and happy/uplifting at the same time. the sound and the visuals are great too and fit perfectly.

a technical note: i played on linux using wine and it worked perfectly! @notapixelstudio try wine if you are on linux.

whitefox 2020-04-24 22:11

I liked this game, really speaks to me. The graphics were beautiful and the background drone music was fitting to the theme. The first time I played, Eveleen quit. However, the second time she managed to fight back depression and get out of the dark place. One weird thing on the second run, was that even though the story revealed she was getting better, the graphics showed her becoming more sad. Anyways, it was awesome that you managed to create a story with decision making and different endings, in such a small time frame. Good game !

rexagon 2020-04-24 22:20

It really makes you think . Nice art and idea)

P.S. if you click "continue" too fast text will dissapear

juliaanna 2020-04-24 22:21

wow, what an experience! your game makes me a bit sad, because no matter what I try, Evelyn gets sad at the end :( what a mood! Some constructive feedback: I think you didn't loop the music, because in the middle of the game it stops. but I really liked your art and the simple animation at the top. All in all a really good game and it fits perfectly to the theme. Keep going!

isayneigh 2020-04-25 02:40

@juliaanna thanks for pointing that out. Whoops :face_palm:

isayneigh 2020-04-25 02:50

@rexagon :face_palm: thanks for testing it's limits, i'm sad I didn't catch that to begin with.

juhani-koskinen 2020-04-25 16:02

Wow, that was deep! There sure was some MOOD in the game. I think the graphics and the audio, even though simple, complimented the atmosphere of the game greatly! Great entry!

teto 2020-04-25 16:05

I really liked this game. It struck a chord with me and I think you've managed to capture depression well and the fact that it takes constant effort to get better and it's not a smooth journey but there is hope if you keep trying. I feel like it's difficult to explain to people that happiness is a choice you have to actively make to want to get better as a lot of people don't understand that it's not exactly choosing to be happy but choosing to continue putting the effort in to making things better and do the things you know you enjoy. Thank you for this experience. Anyway, about the actual game, the combinanation of the graphics, music and the style of the text really created a beautiful atmosphere in a great interpretation of the theme. The continuous walk really highlighted the monotony of life that you describe at the start and I like that she keeps walking like she's doing the same thing she was at the start but her outlook has changed and she's happier now. The only constructive criticism I could possibly give would be that maybe the first click on text skips to the end of the line rather than to the next sentence since I read quite fast and I found it a bit of a pain to have to wait for it to be typed out since I didn't want to skip ahead. Also, I think there is a small bug somewhere as it repeated every line twice in one section of the story. Overall, a beautifully told narrative and definitely something you should be very proud of. Well done!

marxy-37 2020-04-25 17:49

I played the game 3 times already now and got the same ending, even when my choises weren't the, ahem, "healtiest ones"... Is that supposed to happen??? (Maybe i'm just bad at making choises... 🤣)

The game is great, great art syle, excellent mood and story writing (altough the same finale really made the whole experience a little bit more flat in the secondary runs if you ask me...) and overall a great little gem... Good job!!! (And please, be happy. Here's a big smily face: 😀)

trexxak 2020-04-26 16:07

@isayneigh oh, but everyone can be a poet and writer if they only have the courage to be!

Let's just say for now I'm very empathetic, which made the "write only"-route immensely heartbreaking for me, while at the same time giving me strong cognitive dissonance - very weird to explain.

That being said, I found the time to play it a second time and third time through and I wasn't as affected anymore. Taking off the emotional lenses, the writing seems to repeat a lot, which is not really an issue for a jamgame, but took me out of the story.

In consequence, I think the game really shines with the first playthrough. You invest so much thought in Evelyns life and are moved when things don't turn out to be as positive as you thought they'd be, very much delivering a unique, unforgettable experience.

And yes, at least for me, you achieved invoking the feeling of helplessness.

isayneigh 2020-04-26 19:28

@marxy-37 there's a threshold for when her mood changes. It takes at least 2 bad choices to bring your mood down and a total of 4 to get the "worst" ending, for lack of a better word. I think the mistake I made is improving her mood when you make a good choice. So it's possible for you to keep the balance through all 5 chapters. Which, really, reflects reality a little more but does make for a confusing experience. It's probably worth it for me to put an indicator in there so people know how their choices are affecting her.

emperor-eagle 2020-04-28 01:09

Wow! Amazing writing and an amazing game! Not necessarily my type but it was great nonetheless. It was structured well and the graphics all tied in well with the font. Brilliantly innovative and unique, and the mood is 5 stars! I would make the pathway to success clearer however. You have definitely "create[d] the feeling of depression and frustration in the player" and you have achieved this to a very high level! Overall, spectacularly well done!

fabighindaru 2020-04-30 17:02

Ah such a moody game! The story about overcoming depression was very neat and the overall feel was fantastic! Congratulations! ^^

papaver 2020-05-01 22:45

Interesting and moody game! I liked the art style. It was a pity the music suddenly stopped after a while. I found that the big font was a bit hard to read, and on some occasions it appeared a bit too slow for my taste. I enjoyed playing it, and it reminds me to turn off the autopilot and think about what is important for me. Thank you for the game!
