*Of course* I suck at this game.

bosco 2022-10-03 03:59

It took a hot second to figure out what the fuck was going on but we got there in the end! Super cool concept, awesome art and mood even with no audio

chitoyuu 2022-10-03 05:39

@indigo @bosco Thanks for playing! I agree that there's a lot to be desired with how the mechanics are introduced. As it is there is indeed a serious lack of audio / visual indication. For the usual LD reasons, but still. Everything is always taking longer than I think they should! I need to get better at estimations.

It does seem like only one of you got your ratings recorded though. Mind taking a few seconds to submit it again?

robowarrior1982 2022-10-03 05:55

Waouh i'm not sure to understand what i can do, it seems like a card game. Clearly that need a detailled tutorial on the page or in game. Graphics are cool and i like your idea on the theme.

deniz-aras 2022-10-03 06:04

Little confused at the beginning but I cracked it at my second play. Got a high score of 26, and I am Giant Otter of conversation from now on.

It is a quite lovely game. Hope to see a better tutorial at first but you can get the gist after first play trough.

After I played the card I just waited there. Love to have new conversation lines as we play the cards.

Hope to see this game in the future with cards art and more tech cards. Great work.

dnivie 2022-10-03 06:05

Cute game! I got the "Snow Goose" rank, but I don't really get it. If I spent some more time I might figure it out, but personally I'd enjoy some instructions for the game mechanics.

chitoyuu 2022-10-03 06:22

@robowarrior1982 @dnivie Thanks for the feedback! The introduction certainly is a weak point. I'll try to do an update to the game page later today. Hopefully that would help future players understand the game better.

@deniz-aras Congratulations! Yes a Giant Otter of conversation you are. The game was coded to be able to respond to matches and clashes with conversation lines, even with variations and probability and all that, but alas, I just didn't have enough time to write the actual text. A classic case of LD fail. I wish I could have gotten around to drawing the card art too. Perhaps the extra format is for me then! Thanks for playing!

naemis 2022-10-03 07:41

Honestly, this game is such an awesome concept. I'm a big fan of the cute anime-esque character designs so that's a big plus for me :D

The game was hard to understand, but it became simpler after the second/third time... especially when I understood the intro was a semi-tutorial. To be honest, I still really didn't understand what the hell I was doing... but it was fun either way haha. I think the game would benefit a lot more if you have to play cards to react to the dialogue instead of physical cards they played as that would make the game stand out even more and make it a lot more unique.

One thing for me that bothered me was that there was so much information on the screen that taking in what I need to do within 10 seconds was challenging for me, especially in the beginning with no clear idea of what I was doing.

Good job on the game! I like it a lot :D

m11 2022-10-03 08:15

Slightly confusing at the start, but once you understand, a really fun concept :)

indigo 2022-10-03 09:01

Now, with the explanations, I made it to black-tufted Marmoset. Nice!

I will also submit ratings now. I couldn't earlier, because they weren't open yet.

chitoyuu 2022-10-03 09:58

@naemis I'm glad you liked it! You're right that telegraphing card selection with dialogue would be a more interesting design. I thought about it as well, but ultimately decided (correctly) that I wouldn't have the time to implement it. The cards being revealed at start of turn was in fact a last-minute kludge.

The amount of information certainly seems to be a problem here. I guess though it's just an uphill battle trying to mix a card game and the theme together, and at some point I'll have to admit defeat and say I'm not that good a designer (yet). Gotta do better next time!

Thanks for playing and I really appreciate the detailed feedback!

destiny2028 2022-10-03 19:56

i'm not so sure about how do u play the game, but making communication in cards actions and having two ppl talking is quite entertaining. feel free to check out our team too! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/cat-wave-run

incd021 2022-10-04 06:53

Nice idea, and nice job for a combo entry. And as everyone else I found it confused at the beginning. Great job. :D

daandruff 2022-10-04 08:27

You took a risk with needing a lot of manual content apart from the game mechanics themselves, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The idea is great and the card art and style that's there is really good. I think you should keep developing this! Thanks for a great entry!

rob6566 2022-10-04 08:31

Nice work - I liked the idea and the art. I found it pretty confusing. I think a tutorial mode which shows the outcomes of each conversation would be good to help people understand how the cards interact.

bruyere-alice 2022-10-04 08:32

I was pretty confused on the onboarding but still it was pleasant and pretty clever ! Nicely done !

ghuyajil 2022-10-04 08:34

Nice job, but indeed confusing; I didn't really get what I was doing and how the conversation related to the cards played most of the time... Maybe I should try again? Anyway, decent for Compo!

chitoyuu 2022-10-04 08:47

@destiny2028 @incd021 @rob6566 @bruyere-alice @ghuyajil Thanks for playing everyone! I agree that the UI is lacking a lot of audiovisual hints on how the score calculation works, how effects resolve, etc. Shows how much better I still need to get. I appreciate your feedback.

@daandruff Yes, in retrospect I did take a lot of risk with this concept, and in the end it didn't work out as well as I'd like it to. Then again, I wouldn’t have it any other way either! A game jam is a place where you're supposed to take risks, at least in my mind. Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for playing!

linus-lindberg 2022-10-04 13:37

Really impressive how much you managed to get done for compo, with b dothialog and card system! I agree with other comments about it being a lot to take in and hard to understand at first. In-game tutorial would have been nice!

austin-sierra 2022-10-04 16:17

I really like the theme and the idea of a conversation card game but my chatbox glitched out after a few hands

eugenik 2022-10-04 16:26

Amazing game! Good job, guys!.

chitoyuu 2022-10-04 16:32

@austin-sierra Thanks for trying my game. If by "glitching out" you mean that new dialogue stopped appearing after the tutorial, that's just because I didn't have the time to actually write any lines for the game proper. It's "normal", and it is the state you should rate based upon. After a few turns in that state you'll get an ending according to your score, shown in the middle-right of the screen.

kory 2022-10-04 19:16

I can't say I really understood what was happening, but I really liked the background art good job!

serxiolas 2022-10-04 20:21

I didn´t get it, but if I would, I would love it! Nice visuals and gamefeel. Lovely concept!

vykri 2022-10-04 20:29

Like others it took me a while to understand what was going on. Had to read the long description on the itch page to get it. I like how you colored the text in the description though. Once I understood, I felt pretty limited on my ability to influence the game. Seems like if Red played a yellow card, I'd play my highest score blue one, if Red played a blue card, I'd play my highest score yellow one, and if she played a grey card, I'd just play my highest score card. Not sure if there's more strategy beyond that or I'm misunderstanding. The character art is very nice and I enjoyed the conversations on the side panel. Well done.

alaah 2022-10-04 20:35

The introduction is fine, but I didn't realize it was an introduction. Either way it's unreasonable to expect this kind of game to have a full-fledged tutorial in LD, so it's fine.

The idea of a co-operative duel card game is something I haven't seen before. I like the tradeoff of the draw3 card, but otherwise it's largely about responding yellow to blue and vice-versa, so it could use more strategic depth, maybe with more colors or tradeoff cards. I'm interested in a postcompo

The background art is very nice. Pixel text is kind of hard to read sideways; I thought a blue card said "initiate" but it actually said "imitate". Are all cards level 1 or am I just bad?

I'm not sure what the ending condition is. I had a few solid runs that just ended abruptly.

sleepymenace 2022-10-04 20:43

Man, what a promising game. The gameplay itself is alright, a fun little card matching game, but the presentation is really good. It definitely suffers from the lack of a running dialogue as the game goes on, which would have made it great!

Love the art - obviously influenced by Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou which is always nice. Would've loved to get to know the characters better!

Overall I enjoyed the game a lot, and I can easily imagine a more polished version that's a real banger! Great job!

uraffululz 2022-10-05 03:22

Nice game. Not sure why it ended so abruptly, but I'm satisfied. It's refreshing that 10 seconds seems relatively chill-paced compared to other, more hectic games in this jam. Excellent work, especially for a Compo. Screenshot (50).png

chitoyuu 2022-10-05 03:50

Thanks for playing everyone. I'm glad a lot of you liked the art!

@vykri @alaah Thanks for taking the time to understand it! Yes, lack of strategic depth is a very valid criticism of the game in its state. Originally I envisioned the cards to be played face-down, with the actual type of the card having to be deduced from dialogue. I have since learned that this is just wayyyy too much content for one person to create during 48 hours along with all the other things.

@alaah Yes all the cards are level 1 indeed... I didn't even realize that I forgot to tweak those numbers until now. The game ends on the start of turn once you've reached a high-enough level, or once enough (too much) time has passed. Black-tufted Marmoset is actually the highest rank you can get, so you're doing very well. Congratulations!

@sleepymenace Yes, on-going dialogue is one among the many things this lacks. I wish I had more time to write all those text... I would've loved to get the characters known better as well. The art style is indeed influenced by the venerable fish. I for one welcome our potato overlords.

Thanks for all the feedback!

lustdante 2022-10-05 04:55

Wow, a TCG without battle system. That's 6/5 for innovation!

stesproject 2022-10-05 10:06

It's interesting. maybe a little bit difficult but we can all understand why ;)

snesgaard 2022-10-05 17:49

Very fun, always fun to see cards here at LD. Agree with others in the comments that some more in-game feedback to the cards you play would go a long way to make the game more understandable.

spike-studio 2022-10-06 00:56

After I understood how it worked, it was a cool game. Interesting that the "combat" is based around conversation, don't think I have seen that yet with a card game. Also the character art was incredible, well done!

coolgunxdd 2022-10-06 18:58

There are so many texts on screen. And it hurts my eyes with the font. However, the gameplay is so much fun after I figure out the gameplay. Nice work but there is area to be improved!

asieke 2022-10-07 01:25

Liked the character art and the premise

jag 2022-10-07 03:50

This was a very very interesting game! It took a while to figure out what was going on, but once it clicks that this is a battle card game set in the context of having a conversation, its just a mind blown moment! The art is so cute, and I think the idea really needs to be fully fleshed out. Im blown away that you accomplished this for compo. I wish this was given more time because I think theres realy potential for something truly amazing with this idea!

talops 2022-10-11 21:57

Cute anime girls are all I need in life.

The concept of illustrating an Uno-like card puzzler with awkward conversations between introverts is very original and a really nice hook, add to this the Girls' Last Tour style and light-hearted mood and humor and it makes one want to chat with Red all day! I wouldn't be surprised to see such a game find success on Steam if largely expanded upon.

Being aware of the game's issues is one thing, but the most important is the takeaways for next time!

You have good art skills so this aspect will be completed faster in the next jam; why not focus on making music, game juice and having good readability/tutorializing for LD52?

You'll hit LD52, right? Right...? :gun: :smirk:

Congrats on the finished submission, it was fun!

chitoyuu 2022-10-12 06:22

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm glad you liked the art and found the concept interesting! I have taken note on how I could improve the process and time allocation next time.

postfrog 2022-10-16 00:41

cool concept, also really liked the art
