LD39 — Running out of Power

Running from Power by dirkinz 2017-08-05T06:48:08Z

I can't play your game since I don't have a Windows machine, but based on what I can see of your description and screenshots, did we pretty much almost make the same game? Too funny!

Legendary Space Space Space by Rahtainka 2017-08-05T03:26:16Z

I have weird conflicting feelings about the controls, since it totally made sense for the Asteroids-type style you were going for, but I just couldn't get used to them for the life of me which was a little disorienting.

The intro was pretty funny though, and the graphics were really good! Audio was simple but got the job done, so it was solid. Overall, good work!

Defend Home: Mars by sgt3v 2017-08-05T02:45:35Z

Preaching to the choir here, but this was a really good game! One of the few that I've actually bothered playing until the end, so great work. :) I think given the short time frame with Compo, a lot of the bells and whistles that would have made the game more polished (ant hit feedback, generator SFX, etc) just got lost because you were running out of time, and I don't really mind overlooking them. It was still an incredibly strong game overall, loved the modeling and especially the animations (which often get overlooked in game jams), and the small story element to it too.

One thing I will point out though, is that the game was challenging until I lost the first generator, after which it got *significantly* easier. While I still had the two generators, I had to manage my time at each generator carefully and constantly have to evaluate which generator was in more trouble. I also had to manage my bullets carefully, since sometimes I'd have to leave a generator in danger while I ran over to get more ammo whenever I was about to run out. However, once I lost the first generator, I lost all of that tactical decision making as well. Since I knew where all the ants were going to go now, all I had to do was camp the one generator and wait for them to come close enough so they'd drop ammo right in front of me.

Anyway though, I still had a crapton of fun playing your game, and can't wait to see what else you make. Awesome entry! :)

Dreamlight by blksocks 2017-08-04T05:30:58Z

Really great game! I think even my favorite of all the games I've played and rated so far!

The gameplay itself was simple and engaging enough to get me hooked, but challenging enough that I couldn't just win right away. It actually made me want to keep trying again, because I could tell that it was definitely within my skill range and I was just not playing well rather than the game actually being too difficult. Reading through the description after playing made me realize I missed a lot of the subtleties of the combat, like what the candles around me even were or the fact that I could get a second spell with the staff, but it was still fun nonetheless. :)

Running on the Power of Love by nervous-composers 2017-08-05T07:23:48Z

Really liked the game! I agree with zchen that while the game wasn't really striking on a gameplay front, it seems like the focus on the game was more to be an interactive narrative which is really refreshing for a game jam. I'm also really relieved that there are actually multiple endings and you're not doomed to lose the princess' love forever haha.

The graphics and audio really helped set the tone for the story overall too, so it just felt really polished and satisfying to play, even if it was very simple. Would have loved for the game to scale up in difficulty as you progressed more. But again, I think for what you were probably going for, the way it is now works totally fine. Great work :)

Drought by tacohej 2017-08-04T04:29:43Z

I feel like I have weird conflicting feelings on this game because I really liked it but was also kind of disappointed too.

What I did like: * Graphics. Probably the best part of the game to me, really polished looking and builds the atmosphere well * Clever use of the theme. Very unique take on the theme, it's close enough to still make sense but removed enough to make your game really stand out. * Simplicity. I loved being able to just pick up and learn the game quickly.

What I didn't like: * No clear objective. So the game starts out with "Get Water" as my objective, which makes sense. But then I find the first oasis pretty quickly, and now in my mind I'm thinking "check! Water found!" and I'm already trying to find the next thing to move on to. That's when I see the enemies, and since the two mechanics are move and attack, it made me think that I was supposed to just kill all of the enemies. And doing that was a little repetitive and made me lose interest quickly. I didn't realize there was an end cave until I read through the comments on this page. * Audio. The music felt a little bit off? It was well made, but it didn't entirely give me a "desert" vibe... if that makes sense? I think you would have benefitted from general sound effects too.

I think I was mostly disappointed because my sense of adventure and excitement for the game died quickly because I lost track of what I was supposed to do so easily. What you did well, you did REALLY well so great job with that. Keep up the good work! :)

Armless Kairo by thomas-olsson 2017-08-05T07:57:25Z

Incredible! Games with immersive storylines have been super rare to find, and the fact that you pulled this off in 48 hours is so impressive! I had a lot of fun playing the game and getting lost in the environment and story.

Although the game itself didn't really play into the theme that much, that wasn't really a big deal to me honestly. I think what bothered me more was that you set the game up with your limbs getting cut off and such, but it doesn't quite feel like an important part of the gameplay. Particularly so after you find your companion (would love to know the backstory on him lol, he almost seemed like an automaton to me?), it seems like it just becomes more of a regular platformer rather than something that could have been a unique mechanic. But honestly, I'm still really satisfied with what you did make already, you should feel really proud of yourself. :)

Robots from 1991 by dminsky 2017-08-04T03:40:29Z

This game was fantastic, and at its core it was just FUN. I loved that I could just open this game and immediately get thrown into it and it was simple enough to just figure out in seconds. Great throwback to the original FPS games! The overall aesthetic was great.

Minor things I think could've been improved: * Small graphics bug, but the fireballs from the floating robots would be visible through walls. Almost seems like a shader layer issue * The control panels in the first room seemed too tall and gave an odd sense of scale, like I was a lot shorter than I actually was * Swappable weapons or even limited ammo could've made the game a little more challenging

Again though, really good stuff. Would love to see a post-jam version of this for sure

Neon Ride by Andrey Voznuyk 2017-08-05T06:10:47Z

Solid game! Reminds me of the Jelly Car series from way back in the day, loved the nostalgia trip. What you have so far for a working prototype is really good, and I love that you're excited to keep working on it regardless. The game could really benefit from fun sound effects and more level variety. A little more work on it and I think you could have something ready for the app store! Awesome job!

PoweRL by Steve Johnson 2017-08-05T05:55:14Z

10/10 graphics!!! (haha now you have to add me to the quote on the main menu ;P)

As a huge fan of roguelikes, I really enjoyed this game and I think you nailed the roguelike/puzzle feeling for the game! It was a lot more complex than I was expecting too, which is a plus. Loved the music and the sound effects too; they really wrapped the game together nicely.

The game was a tad too difficult to win, since between the - tiles and repeatedly getting surrounded by enemies I'd find myself dying pretty quickly. Not to mention that the enemies having the ability to move diagonally while I couldn't made it feel a little bit more unbalanced than it should've been. But that aside, I still loved playing it, good work!

Constellation Exploration by matfernandestt 2017-08-05T05:31:18Z

I think that what you have is pretty solid for only 20 hours of work! Nice job :)

Some of the stars in the constellations are a little too spread apart I think, kind of hard to beat a level if I don't necessarily know where the stars all are right away. But once I did it was fun to plan out which order I should capture them so that I wouldn't die before I could get them all!

Turn Out by Vovin 2017-08-05T02:12:47Z

Interesting idea! Simple enough concept to pick up and play and complex enough to keep me engaged. The level design was really well done!

My only major criticism is an echo of some other people here already, that not being able to see the cube in some rotations made it hard to tell where exactly I was positioned. In a game that is entirely focused on careful positioning, that was a little frustrating.

Deep Raider by kr4ft3r 2017-08-05T22:12:22Z

Solid game! Really liked the environment and mood set by the characters interacting with you, and having an immersive environment all around you to interact with. Having both lights and sonar also made it feel a lot more engaging.

It was a little difficult to actually keep track of where the treasure was, or generally where I actually was (the position updater helped, but still didn't mean too much to me since I couldn't really visualize it), but that also kind felt like it was a point of the game so I don't see it as like a HUGE negative point.

Despotism 3k by NikolayKuznetsov 2017-08-05T02:00:20Z

Very well polished game! Everything about it was incredibly well put together: the music, the visuals, the tone of the game, etc. I think I personally got bored just because I'm not a fan of resource management games (nothing against your game at all!), but the mechanics of the game as a whole seemed put together enough that I can still really appreciate it.

Awesome job, y'all! :)

Battery Worm by ExciteMike 2017-08-05T06:46:08Z

For not having touched Unity in a while, I think the game still turned out pretty well. Nice work! :)

I liked the neon/Tron vibe you went with for the graphics. The explosion from dying at the end was also really satisfying to watch, made me less upset about losing haha! I will say that it took me some time to realize that the smaller grid-looking thing always in the middle of the screen was just the other side of the map. It was annoying/confusing at first, but after my realization I could tolerate it a bit more since I could see where new batteries/baddies were.

I will agree with some of the other comments that the game started to feel a bit tedious the longer I played. There wasn't much of a sense of urgency to it, which I feel like music and maybe a bit more active enemies could have helped. Still overall though, solid game!

Bunker by Maesen 2017-08-05T07:02:06Z

I really enjoyed this game! Reminds me of the Achievement Unlocked/This is the Only Level games on Armor Games, if you ever played those. The level design in your game was brilliant, and I loved how you slowly ramped the game up with new concepts with each upcoming level. If anything, my biggest complaint is that the game was too short!

The graphics and audio were simple, but got the job done. If you ever update the game, it's something you could consider revamping too, but I think it's fine as is. Great stuff overall. :)

@peter-sheehan @mrsylar59

Whoops sorry, just seeing these comments now! Just updated the Windows build on the itch.io site, let me know if they're still not working for you! :)

From Kingdom to Freedom by Studio RTV 2017-08-04T04:42:12Z

Thanks y'all for playing and for the comments! Lol the game was even hard for me while I was developing it, I ran out of time before I could really get into polishing to make it actually manageable to play.

@ranner198 I totally agree on the ground/background texturing. Didn't have time to get around to figure out scrolling textures either, it's easily the thing I'm most sad about not being able to get to! Definitely would have helped wrap the game together overall.

From Kingdom to Freedom by Studio RTV 2017-08-05T05:43:29Z

@cornelia-xaos Sure thing! Didn't realize you could download all of the build packages for each platform on one computer, I had initially built packages from a Windows and Mac computer separately haha. Will get a Linux version up soon!

@ everyone else

Guess through all of my testing I forgot to actually add the colliders at the end of the hallway to prevent you from falling off the level. Whoops! Object movement speed and size of the boxes were the things I wanted to be able to tweak more but unfortunately ran out of time. When the jam is over I do want to go back and polish this up more so it actually feels complete.

Did not realize so many people would find my voice recording so funny, maybe I should go into a career in voice acting :P

Hungry Harry's Climb by PBG 2017-08-05T05:22:59Z

Just played the game. Simple, but I loved it! I really liked the throwback to old cartridge games before even the intro, and having that really helped sell the aesthetic and sound design of the end product.

Have to ask though, are the levels randomly generated? I ask because the first level took me maybe around 5-10 minutes to beat, but then the next two took maybe 2 minutes for both. Not sure if that's just me getting a hang of the game, or if I got lucky (the third level basically had two climbable walls that led me straight through the entire thing)?

Great game, nice work! :)

Powerless: Trump Teaches Typing by RootPew 2017-08-05T02:23:53Z

lol this was amazing. It was simple but still fun because of how hilarious it was.

Not sure how WPM at the end is calculated because I feel like it was kind of inaccurate, but otherwise no major complaints. Awesome job! :)

Qwik by Sno0w 2017-08-04T03:05:17Z

This was a pretty neat game, I had a lot of fun playing it! Like Mindoo said, the second level was definitely better than the first. I think with a game as simple as this, it would have been fine making the first level a little more challenging, but no big deal.

I liked the music and sound design too, really helped with the neon/techno feel you were going for.

The things that I had trouble/think could be improved are pretty much already said by other people in the thread: * Turning mechanism could have been a little smoother, sometimes it was a bit hard to control given how quick (lol qwik) the pace of the game is * Power up placement was a little iffy in some spots, leading me into a guaranteed crash or flight off the edge * Graphics were a little plain, but given it was just you asking for more would probably be a lot to squeeze in

Overall though, really good job, especially for a first timer :)

Murder on 39th Street by vadinci 2017-08-05T07:13:42Z

This game was absolutely fantastic! I honestly can't think of a better take on the theme, really nice work! Also thank you for including the debug build, since I was worried that I would lose patience waiting for my battery to drain and not be able to play the full game.

Everything about this game is so cohesive, the graphics, the music and sound effects, everything, I'm so impressed that you all managed to pull off this massive of a project on time! This is easily something that would be worth paying for, really great job y'all.

LD45 — Start with nothing

PROJECT BIND by Plepletier 2019-10-07T23:02:06Z

Had a lot of fun with this one! It was simple but the challenge progression felt like it ramped up smoothly. It was like a fun mix between Risk of Rain and G-Darius, both games I love :)

Pizza Panic! by Studio RTV 2019-10-07T23:45:29Z

@rdcooper thank you for the kind words! I'm working on a fix for that bug, hoping to get that out and re-upload soon!

Edit: Bug is fixed and game is re-uploaded!

Gecko's Cabinet by JustMars 2019-10-07T23:14:19Z

I liked the mysterious mood of the game between the art style and music! The fact that the game had multiple endings was pretty neat, but the story beats felt a little disconnected/random to me? It was still fun to play through multiple times to see what all the scenarios could be though!

Fast Bastard by eupde 2019-10-08T02:55:58Z

I really enjoyed this game! I absolutely adored the art style, gave me like a very candyland type vibe which fit the goofy nature of the game already. I actually laughed out loud when I first encountered a horse in someone's pocket too, really wasn't expecting that one haha!

Ended my first run with 118 and second with 135, so 182 is ridiculous!! Nice work :)
