Hey, not sure if you're aware. I'm getting a 404 on the itch.io page.

ajayajayaj 2017-08-01 17:26

Fixed sorry. Also, it looks like my web build has broken sound, so I only have a downloadable build for now. Will be fixed.

Edit: Web version now working!

chris-coe 2017-08-02 04:22

Looks like a cute concept with shining the light on things to reveal their true nature, but I was extremely disappointed there was nothing to explore. I immediately started moving, and ended up in what appeared to be infinitely procedurally generated terrain with no enemies.

It would be cool to see your concept applied to levels, like a dark creepy house, etc.

jahndis 2017-08-02 04:23

Neat little concept. First time I played I started just running to the right. But the terrain must auto-generate or something because I just kept going lol. Stuck around the generator and charger the second time and had a little more fun ;)

ajayajayaj 2017-08-02 04:32

@chris-coe @jahndis Sorry guys, yea it's infinitly large (well at least until you hit the integer overflow). I'm going to add a disclaimer.

I really do think adding exploration to the mix would really improve the game. Thanks a lot for the feedback!

eshudra 2017-08-02 04:49

Nice game! Interesting survival idea.

mcjammydodger 2017-08-02 08:17

I like the idea of this game. The way the flashlight works is really well done. It would have been nice to have more to explore and maybe a vertical element to the game like platforms to jump on.

I enjoyed the music and the art, and the concept of the game was good, I just think more variety instead of having to stay around the same charger would have been nice.

Good job!

rikoclon 2017-08-02 08:29

It took me a while to realize there wasn't anything, if you kept going to the side... no bad guys either so even with no energy and no lighting up the bad guys you could still get a good score... just by holding right and up. The points should come from lighting up bad guys not from how long you stayed alive. There is like no time for testing in a game jam, so I understand. This is good work for being done by only one person. I especially liked the enemies turning into toys. I liked the way the flashlight worked but was surprised not to see darkness, but honestly its kinda nice, because so many of these revolve around darkness. The music is great really!

smbe19 2017-08-02 17:41

Really cool idea. As others already pointed out it would be fun to be able to explore something to the left/right.

I noticed you used libGDX as well. I didn't see any other games made in libGDX so far and would really like to see how others use it. I just "discovered" the amazing scene2d this jam, maybe there are some other hidden gems I did not yet find. Would you have the source code for your game available somewhere?

ajayajayaj 2017-08-02 18:14

@mcjammerdodger Thanks so much for commenting. I agree with the vertical exploration too.

@rikoclon Haha, I completely forgot that enemies only spawn in a small radius.

About the darkness, originally it was a black background, but I found it looked kinda bland, so I decided to add a background. But, I tried to make the background still "dark", and make it very dark in comparison to the normal background. Now that I think of it, I forgot to add the death animation. I was planning on making it so the whole screen slowly turned back into your bedroom

Also, thanks for complimenting on my music. I am trying hard to improve my music skills. Thanks!

@smbe19 I have added the source code. Normally I just use normal Java (no libraries), but this time I wanted to have a web version to make rating easier. I normally rate mostly web games, so it's not fair if I don't offer a web version.

In the HTML Launcher you'll be able to see my auto resizing code, it's pretty useful, I'm not sure if you have a similar system or not.

smbe19 2017-08-02 19:27

Thanks, but "This repository is empty." :wink:

ajayajayaj 2017-08-02 19:32

@smbe19 Fixed

Things I liked - Flash light as weapon (after I figured it out) - simple graphics -

Things for improvement - got killed without being able to figure out what to do / In game totorial - music got grating after a while - sounds for enemies

ajayajayaj 2017-08-02 21:33

@jason-kennedy Thanks for the list! You are right, I probably should have added a tutorial.

ninjascribble 2017-08-03 03:35

Turning the monsters into toys is a really fun idea! I was trying to use the arrow keys at first, so it took me a minute to figure out how to use the flashlight, but once I did it was smooth sailing. I think you could take this further pretty easily -- adding some verticality to the level design, giving the player a win condition, and spawning enemies in a more predictable way would do a lot for this game. Overall I really enjoyed it though. Thanks for sharing!

spice135 2017-08-03 06:36

Great game! Had some fun with it :D

peter-sheehan 2017-08-03 06:47

Hey! Really liked the concept of the game, and the main mechanic is pretty cool. There's a lot of tension in being defenseless as you charge the flashlight. I just wish there was a bit more to it. If there was some kind of enemy progression, or maybe you had to find and crank multiple generators? Going left also just ends up making it so you lose your battery after a while. I also thought that the art was a little simplistic, but honestly not bad and fit the overall feel of the game. So all in all, you have a great concept, and I would love to play a full- length something like this in the future if you made it.

ajayajayaj 2017-08-03 07:04

@ninjascribble @spice135 @peter-sheehan

Thanks guys! I really like the suggestions.

Multiple generators, a form of discovery, and a finite world are things I really want to add in a post jam release maybe.

Thanks for rating and giving suggestions!

colozz 2017-08-03 16:06

Another Java dev.! Your game is cool:

I loved: - The graphics - The audio - The concept - The animation of your y-flipping character

I would have loved: - A score mechanic - Some goal mechanic

justinooncx 2017-08-03 16:56

This was certainly an interesting entry~ The game has this.. rather strange difficulty curve! Killing enemies with flashlights and conserving energy is super easy, but the moment you need to turn the crank, you're dead without the flashlight in your hand. There seemed to be a problem with the resizing, so perhaps it might have been easier if I could see the enemies from further away, but who knows. The horror mood kinda suffered from the cartoony art style and semi-spooky soundtrack, but otherwise, it's an interesting concept~

ajayajayaj 2017-08-03 19:26

@colozz

Thanks for the nicely formatted feedback. Also, I normally just use java without libraries, but this time wanted to have a web build, so decided to use Lib-GDX.

@justinooncx

I see what you mean about the difficulty curve. Thanks for the feedback!

russell-ng 2017-08-04 04:52

Controls felt good. Not sure why the flashlight stops working even though its charged. I think i missed something. Good job.

yirggzmb 2017-08-04 08:50

Nice sorta spooky atmosphere, not knowing when something was gonna come creeping up on you.

evrim 2017-08-04 11:35

I love the idea. I enjoyed playing it very much. Good job.

ryte2byte 2017-08-05 02:09

I really liked the concept and flavor. Revealing the monsters as toys in the room is a great concept! Art and music were very well done. Loved the 2d 'flip' when the character turns.

I don't think you needed quite so large a light beam. Your controls work well and enemies pop after one hit, so maybe a thinner beam would've added a little challenge. Might be my skills (or lack thereof), but it pretty much amounted to Game Over whenever I had to put the light down and crank the generator.

megalink 2017-08-05 08:52

Cool game! The concept was quite innovative and it suited the theme pretty well. Music wasn't bad either. Good job!

cheldav 2017-08-07 05:54

Love the game! The music really suits the mood and the characters were adorable. I also like that the controls were easy and I love that there was a web option.

gwinnell 2017-08-08 11:21

Felt kind of dizzy looking at the start screen, aha! I enjoyed the game, and the depth mask was cool too. I liked how the enemies turned into toys.

Few improvements/feedbacks: It would have been nice if the camera followed more where the player was looking, or where the mouse was pointed, as I was caught off guard a few times. It also would have been nice to telegraph somehow when I can and can't put the torch down, and when I can and can't crank the generator. A simple scale on the torch, or highlight on the battery/generator crank would have done the job.

Music was good and appropriate for the theme and style of the game, and I'm impressed that the world goes on forever! Web build gets extra kudos too. Good work. :thumbsup:

Neat idea! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jtt-Piir6X0
