LD39 — Running out of Power

Achluophobia by Ajayajayaj 2017-08-03T03:35:39Z

Turning the monsters into toys is a really fun idea! I was trying to use the arrow keys at first, so it took me a minute to figure out how to use the flashlight, but once I did it was smooth sailing. I think you could take this further pretty easily -- adding some verticality to the level design, giving the player a win condition, and spawning enemies in a more predictable way would do a lot for this game. Overall I really enjoyed it though. Thanks for sharing!

Geralt's secret powersource by Sublustris 2017-08-01T19:39:42Z

Wow, the graphics are really good -- I'm impressed with how much you got done in just a couple of days! Fun gameplay, and some in-game humor. Solid entry!

Elemental Conflict by dankar 2017-08-01T19:49:59Z

Turn-based games can be tough to get right in such a short time, especially if you want to include a number of different abilities. I think you've done a great job with this entry! My only gripes were with the length of each battle (too long), and some confusing feedback -- it wasn't clear how damage against me was tallied, and I never seemed near death.

Supernode by Dustyroom 2017-08-02T19:57:39Z

Wow, I could see myself killing a fair amount of time on the bus with this game. Really simple concept, but it goes deep. My only gripe is that I'd like to be able to speed up the game timer at will so I don't have to sit there waiting for another node to show up. That might break the zen-like mood you seem to be going for though. Solid entry. Thanks for sharing!

HoverBots by genderTruckery 2017-08-02T03:03:20Z

I'm on a Mac, but I set up a VM to run Windows so I could play and rate some more games. Sadly my little machine just isn't up to the task of running this one... just wanted to pop in and say thanks for your review. Keep making games, and have fun!

Solar Defence by w1n5t0n 2017-08-03T03:46:12Z

Cool game! I liked the opposing goals of staying near the light source and defending targets that are hidden from it. Simple, effective mechanics. My only gripe was with the jump, which felt too slow for a game that demands immediacy. Good entry. Thanks for sharing!

Starship by wesley werner 2017-08-04T03:04:49Z

Nice little retro throwback -- the sound and graphics are perfect for the style of game you were going for. Intergalactic postal service is a fun idea, and I didn't have any trouble getting missions from planets and delivering them to others. I'm afraid I never did figure out how shields and phasers worked though, and mostly just avoided enemies as much as possible. I could see you building this one up a bit more -- maybe adding some random events each time you reach a planet, and throwing in some bonuses for successful combat. Solid entry -- thanks for sharing!

Mothership by Almax 2017-08-02T19:41:04Z

Really creative idea! I wasn't able to get very far, but I really enjoyed the squad management aspect. Felt like an RTS/castle defense mashup. Thanks for sharing!

Somewhat Slightly Dazed by kdlc 2017-08-02T02:48:24Z

I can definitely see this becoming a fun puzzle game. You've got great graphics, good controls, and a neat concept. Unfortunately, just like @aafoncebox I wasn't able to get to the bottom-left block or push any blocks around. I'm not sure if the push feature wasn't implemented, or if I'm just doing it wrong. Thanks for sharing!

Artax by Flaterectomy 2017-08-04T19:18:13Z

Wow, it's hard to believe you managed to to so much in a long weekend. The pixel art is great, the gameplay is intuitive but with plenty of opportunity for complex puzzle-solving, and the mechanics are tight and responsive. It feels good to play, and I'd love to play more. Thanks for sharing!

Ducks in a Row by hgcummings 2017-08-01T19:24:09Z

This is pretty clever! I'd love to see a version with more levels -- it could be a really fun way to pass time on the bus. Great job :)

Despot 3900 by alxm 2017-08-02T02:41:26Z

A really creative take on the theme, and great execution! I love the green and pink -- reminds me of old games like Oregon Trail, but it's definitely it's own thing. I got myself into a loop of taxing the nobles, imprisoning a noble, giving money to the peasants, imprisoning another noble, ad infinitum. I died with 100% popularity and 0% loyalty, but I never suffered a coup so that's nice :P

I could see you taking this further -- adding some random events that throw a bit of chaos into the mix, and a few more factions to make your decisions a bit more interesting. I'm glad I played this one!

Breaker Breaker! by FlyingMeta 2017-08-02T03:40:20Z

Great entry! I love the oldschool GameBoy artwork -- especially the explosion when you crash looks really well polished. Took me a second to get the hang of it, but once I did the controls felt tight and the I had a ton of fun. Thanks for sharing!

Electro-Brains by unit684 2017-08-02T03:35:32Z

WebGL worked for me. It was a little choppy, but that may be because I'm running in a VM. Fun game -- I got overwhelmed pretty quickly, but given a few more playthroughs I can definitely see myself getting better. Thanks for sharing!

Trump Clicker by Improx Games 2017-08-02T03:28:13Z

Haha, ok this is silly but it's pretty fun! I loved building a little self-sustaining controversy machine, and your controversy currency system is brilliant. Thanks for sharing!

PoweRL by Steve Johnson 2017-08-03T03:54:02Z

I agree that the pixel art you're working on now is better-looking, but the vector graphics aren't terrible. It's really obvious what everything is/does, and didn't take much to pick this one up. It took waaay more effort to put it down -- I really enjoyed this one! Those rabbits are jerks though :P

PowerBot by Caffeinated Psychics 2017-08-02T02:21:56Z

This is great! Really nice level design, good graphics, and some fun mechanics. My only gripe is with the controls -- jump is really floaty and difficult to control, and left ctrl key is hard to hit (maybe try using the R key?). I really enjoyed this one though. Thanks for sharing!

Gargoyle's Curse by Rombus 2017-08-04T02:52:29Z

I love the Pico 8 -- glad to see it pop up in this compo! The graphics are perfect for this style of game. The controls felt tight and responsive, and I loved all the sound effects. Overall this is a fantastic entry. Thanks for sharing!

Turn Out by Vovin 2017-08-02T03:17:05Z

Sweet! I love a good puzzle game, and this one was really different. I could probably keep playing this one for a while -- thanks for sharing!

Advanced Infiltration Management System by crass_sandwich 2017-08-04T19:28:17Z

Nice, simple first-person shooter. It ran smoothly, and despite the simple graphics I actually really liked the visual style -- it reminded me of some of the first-generation playstation games. I had trouble figuring out how to regain energy, and while I managed to do it a few times I'm still not sure I understand it. I found the slowdown when the server is near death pretty annoying... I wanted to move fast to try to fix things, but it felt more like the game was already over. Overall this is a solid compo entry. Thanks for sharing!

Escape! by Damoy 2017-08-03T04:19:37Z

Difficult, but hell that's what you want out of a puzzle game! I like the simple mechanics -- makes it easy to pick up and play. I didn't like only being able to shoot up or down though... felt needlessly limiting. Overall, solid entry. Thanks for sharing!

Uninterruptible Power by DarkXolotl 2017-08-02T02:30:39Z

Well great job showing your team mates that you don't need them -- this turned out really well, considering your change in plans! I like the level variation, and it's challenging but fair. The camera is the only thing that hurts it for me -- it's hard to judge your jumps when the platforms disappear off screen. Really glad you pulled this off though. You should be proud!

Temple of Illumination by Johngun 2017-08-03T03:14:40Z

Easily one of the better entries I've played so far. The music is great, and the sheer number of levels you managed to get in there is impressive! My only gripe is with the controls, which took me a while to get used to and never felt very intuitive. Great idea, great execution -- looking forward to seeing what you put together for #40. Thanks for sharing!

Quest by Scrumplesplunge 2017-08-01T19:32:40Z

The tutorials are perfect -- they reveal just enough about the game without taking away the puzzle-solving aspect. I'd love to see some more levels. Really great entry!

TRIAL OF THE 3 SUNS by Godot35 2017-08-03T04:27:43Z

I love the unique mechanic! This felt like Super Meat Boy meets DDR, and I'd love it even more if there were music to go along with the keypress prompts. The platforming is alright, though the jump mechanic could use some tightening up. Really great entry though -- thanks for sharing!

Power Struggle by Lightzer 2017-08-03T04:43:00Z

Wow, that gets hard in a hurry. The first wave was manageable, but the second wave overwhelmed me pretty quickly! I love a good shmup though, and you put together some nice graphics and music. Good entry -- thanks for sharing!

daemon by bombjack 2017-08-02T03:10:06Z

The artwork is fantastic, and I could definitely see myself getting better after each death. A bit of dark souls influence? The controls are tight -- jumping and moving felt good. Would be nice if the energy bar were visible while you were moving, and if the first level took some time to ease you in a bit more. Nice job overall!

Magnetic Power by TomDev 2017-08-02T19:44:49Z

It's too bad you weren't able to finish this one -- there's some real promise here. The 1-to-1 player-enemy movement style reminds me of Crypto of the Necrodancer, and I'm curious about where it would have gone if you'd had more time. I hope you're up for trying again next time :)

M. O. P. S. by DaniilGaponov 2017-08-03T19:23:21Z

The graphics and music are great, and I like the idea! I was able to keep my energy production going pretty well, but I never quite figured out what the end game was. I'm guessing you ran out of time to get everything you wanted in there -- weapons, etc... but I had fun playing around with it. Thanks for sharing!

Runnerbot LD39Entry by Pixel Game Wizard 2017-08-03T03:24:54Z

Heads up -- I'm afraid I'm getting the following error when I try to load the WebGL version. I'm on a Mac with Chrome and Safari, if it helps. "An error occured running the Unity content on this page. See your browser JavaScript console for more info. The error was: ReferenceError: Can't find variable: UnityProgress"

I went ahead and downloaded the OS X version though, and that runs just fine! Great job with this one -- the graphics are really well done, and you managed to fit a lot into the game and make everything feel super-intuitive. Would be great if there were some sound, but it's a solid entry regardless. Thanks for sharing!

Watervapor by Fragfire 2017-08-01T19:16:08Z

Cool game! I played it in Chrome on OS X and it worked flawlessly. I agree with a previous reviewer that the purpose of the power-ups were pretty vague, but the mechanics were fun and it's a pretty fun concept!

Character Building by Badly Drawn Rod 2017-08-02T20:02:45Z

Haha, ok this one's just a little depressing -- no matter what I do I'm always wrong! Fun idea, would be interesting if previous decisions could effect future decisions, or even effect the kinds of decisions you have to make later on down the line. Nice job. Thanks for sharing!

Tank Empty by JSMCAG 2017-08-02T19:32:22Z

Those other drivers are jerks! This was a ton of fun though -- great job for just 6 hours! I managed to make it 22km. Would be even better if the challenge increased over time, but a solid entry nonetheless. Thanks for sharing!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

FPTA Deluxe by dankar 2018-04-27T04:31:33Z

Nice execution! I wasn't sure how a first-person adventure game would play out, but I actually really liked being able to walk around between panels. I LOVED it when the bookcase panel disappeared to reveal the small room behind it. Really adds a lot to the narrative!

Putt-Putt BOOM! by LandoSystems 2018-04-24T03:02:23Z

Oh yeah, this is great! I was hooked as soon as I made it to the second course, and started getting fired upon by the turrets. Great entry!

Twin TV by saintheiser 2018-04-25T03:11:23Z

Woo! This is fantastic! I considered a lot of genres for my entry, but a matching game never crossed my mind. Great concept, and great execution. You deserve all the kudos you get for this one!

Draw Me Something by Yirggzmb 2018-04-28T05:50:45Z

A great little shooter, and so much fun being able to make it your own. Nice job!

A Tribute to Mayhem by TechnoNugget 2018-04-25T03:23:41Z

I ran into a weird issue where the world was all black but I could see the cards, player, and enemy sprites (Chrome on OS X). I couldn't really see what I was doing most of the time, but somehow I still managed to get around alright, pick up cards, and blast scary looking things. I love the concept, and the card variety is pretty impressive! Dunno what caused the glitch, but I had fun anyway!

A Tribute to Mayhem by TechnoNugget 2018-04-25T03:41:13Z

@technonugget Yeah, I opened up Chrome dev tools to see if there were any Javascript errors. Nothing in there I'm afraid, so... who knows! Here's a screenshot if you're curious about what it looked like though.

Magic The Shattering by diptoman 2018-04-27T04:18:04Z

This is a solid shooter by any measure. Introducing the cards adds an element of strategy, and makes it infinitely more interesting on multiple plays. Great entry, thanks for sharing!

Goose Typing Attack by ehtd 2018-04-28T04:11:17Z

Awesome! I wish there was a timer so I could try to beat my best scores, but I had a ton of fun chasing down that human!

Tetris Escape! by Ninjascribble 2018-04-25T13:33:43Z

@MartinTristan If you hold the SHIFT key down, then the arrow keys will move the blocks

City Blocks by legavroche 2018-04-28T04:34:07Z

Haha, definitely nailed the theme! It took me awhile to get the hang of watching the words and the ball at the same time, but once I got the hang of it I was able to keep things going for quite a while. Solid entry!

The hole at the end of the universe by Greet 2018-04-28T06:15:49Z

Great job! I started getting cocky after the 8th hole, then the 9th hole got BRUTALLY DIFFICULT! I had a ton of fun trying to figure out how to make it through. Thanks for sharing!

Opposing Worlds by Particles GameStudio 2018-04-24T03:31:30Z

Wow! You got so much done, I'm really impressed! The game world is actually pretty big, and the mechanics are really tight. I got hung up a few times on floor tiles, but they were easy enough to jump over once I figured out what was going on. Solid entry!

Band Battle Fantasy - A Turn-Based Rhythm Game by MartinTristan 2018-04-25T03:01:27Z

Yeah! Turn-based battle of the bands -- I love it! The timing made it really hard to progress, but I want more of this awesome concept :)

Grid Gunner by SuperTibbles 2018-04-26T05:01:00Z

This is so fantastic! A turn-based bullet hell that honestly just works. I especially love the "tips" between levels. Great job!

Happy Hammer by TheLucky 2018-04-28T06:00:32Z

Hehe, ground pound the nail to continue! Super-awesome entry -- I had a ton of fun playing. Thanks for sharing!

Acute Stronghold by BalladofSong 2018-04-27T03:11:58Z

It took me a bit, but the intro text and the mellow soundtrack eventually made me realize that just fighting every enemy was going to be a losing strategy. This game favors logic over conflict, and I liked that a lot. It definitely got hard to avoid the enemies, but I really enjoyed it :)

Adventure Defense by NateTheGreat 2018-04-25T03:37:21Z

Somehow resource-gathering fit right in with a tower defense game. Solid execution -- if this were an Android game, I could really see myself killing some time on my commute with it!

Crash to the Past by UntitledQ 2018-04-24T03:11:25Z

Nice! I was really surprised when I realized that the world was changing every time I respawned -- really improved replayability. Super-challenging, but fair, and tons of fun!

Kingdoms of Marazia - MMORTS by Siedge 2018-04-25T03:08:26Z

I was able to login, but that's about it. The map loaded, and I saw a few figures on it, but I couldn't interact with or build anything. I love the idea, but maybe a bit too ambitious for a weekend? I hope you had fun anyway!

Kingdoms of Marazia - MMORTS by Siedge 2018-04-25T03:59:44Z

Haha, it's all good @Siedge. I'd loooove to see an MMORTS, but hell... just programming the netcode sounds like a ton of work. I'm impressed that you got as far as you did!

Puzzle Invasion! by EstacaoMarte 2018-04-28T04:27:59Z

Nice job! I wasn't quite sure what I supposed to be doing at first, but once I figured things out I was pretty hooked! Good entry, and I'm glad you had fun building it :)

Rogue Ball by ctran13 2018-04-27T03:23:38Z

Apparently I have terrible ball-control, but I love the idea! The cheer at the end made getting through the maze worth it. Enemies were tough to take out, but I like that you gave the player enough health to let them make a few mistakes and still reach the goal. Fun game!

Escape from... something by Oxygenium 2018-04-25T03:52:53Z

Hey, this is great! You deserve much more attention than you've gotten so far. The stealth mechanics are simple to understand, but certainly made me think about the second and third puzzles, and somehow the two genres actually work really well together here. Solid entry!

Raucous Raccard by noumenus 2018-04-27T03:41:10Z

That was awesome! I love having to deal with the hand you're given, and come up with interesting ticket combinations in order to survive until the next round. Somehow I managed to get turned around a couple of times -- you might consider adding a "turn" ticket into the mix to give players more control over their facing. One of my favorite combinations was placing a "jump" ticket right on top of a "rabies" ticket, then watching the angry raccoon hop up and down while taking out any animal control dudes foolish enough to cross its path. Overall, great game -- thanks for sharing!

Shump Racing by Rayquarian 2018-04-24T02:46:52Z

Had fun racing around and shooting the space invaders! Love the idea overall, and I completely agree with @HailBurns -- a score counter, and a speed counter would make a tremendous impact. Good job :)

Astro Vanguard by Nicholas Balanda 2018-04-25T03:57:50Z

Wow, you managed to get so much in there! Once I figured out that I could hold the mouse button to shoot continuously, the game clicked pretty well for me. The graphics and sound are great, and I think you've done a fantastic job executing the concept. Nice!
