LD24 — Evolution

Tonality by hgcummings 2012-08-27T21:01:00

Thanks for the comments so far. I really struggled to balance this one, since the exponential growth makes it difficult, although it is possible to win (destroy the whole colony) if you're lucky.

I was thinking of adding in powerups of some kind to level the curve out a bit (e.g. after 10 successful matches you get a powerup that inhibits any reproduction for some number of seconds). For now, you can also tweak the difficulty in the options screen.

Tonality by hgcummings 2012-08-29T23:28:00

@hnjslater - sorry you encountered a problem running the game. Java is failing to find a midi sequencer on your system. What platform are you on? - For Mac and Windows, this should 'just work' (both include a sequencer that's configured by default with a software synthersizer), unless you've changed the config yourself. I'm not sure about Linux, I'm afraid...

Tonality by hgcummings 2012-09-01T16:02:00

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I definitely appreciate that the difficulty curve needs leveling out, and I have several ideas for this of my own, from the comments above and from other people. I also agree about differentiating the bacteria visually based on their sequence, although this would need a bit of care to get right.

> Real bacteria, though, have DNA much more similar; two randomly selected bacteria from the population have DNA that's nothing alike, which makes the game very hard

Actually, each mutation only adds or alters one note in the sequence. However, because the rate of mutation is very high, the sequences can diverge very quickly, so it's not obvious that this is the case. It might be covered by addressing the other issues above though (visually differentiating bacteria, and balancing out the growth/mutation rate somehow).

Aggrandize by phaze0 2012-09-01T12:45:00

I liked the fairly sinister mood of the game and can see what you were going for with the gameplay you didn't manage to complete. I also don't think there's anything wrong with making an Android game if that's what you wanted to do (Ludum Dare is about individuality, IMO). The graphics were slightly confusing initially (it took me a while to realize which terrain was passable and which wasn't), although once I'd got used to it I started seeing it in terms of buildings with rooms. Was the map procedurally generated? - Would be neat if so, although I did spot one NPC in a room with no entry points. I agree with elbowroom that the controls could do with a bit more work. If you are making an Android game then you might as well take advantage of the touch screen, rather than sticking with the idea of pressing keys/buttons.

deevo by TheSheep 2012-08-27T18:54:00

Really nice artwork. Some similarly quirky music & SFX would have been good. Obviously a very simple game at the moment, but it's a great start.

Happy Vegan Birthday by Huitre 2012-09-08T15:28:00

Similar to other commenters: Lovely graphics but I had trouble actually playing it. I couldn't even open the inventory, as the button was absurdly tiny on my screen and I don't have a hard menu button on my phone.

Click Red, Eat Rest by Beep2Bleep 2012-09-08T15:37:00

The controls were slightly confusing at first, but I actually quite like that the two actions were combined, since it forced you to think a bit more carefully about when and where you clicked. Sometimes a level seemed to end without me knowing way (still had time remaining, didn't go off the edge of the screen ie hit too many red blocks). Graphics were unapolegetically lo-fi.

Pincers by ggiraldez 2012-08-29T22:55:00

Nice graphics and I loved the size and complexity of the game world. It felt quite like flOw. I found the controls slightly tricky (especially using the keyboard) and ended up pointlessly circling bits of food initially, but getting more adept at controlling the creature is quite rewarding. Might have been good to have more goals than just wandering around eating & leveling up, to give the game a bit more purpose (but then again, that's all that snake is and it's one of the most popular games ever).

Oh my, a shooter with blocks! by Dir3kt 2012-08-27T19:16:00

I like the retro graphics. Reminded me of the old Micro Machines games a bite. The upgrade & damage model is good too (actually losing bits of your ship when you're hit). I did seem to encounter a bug where my ship started constantly trying to move right.

@#$% Life! I'm the god damn SUN. by Phobos001 2012-09-02T00:07:00

Odd but entertaining game. I couldn't decide if it was better to carefully hunt down planets or just mindless race through space. Quite fun either way though.

Survival Of The Tastiest by zeh 2012-09-08T15:10:00

Completely bizarre but quite fun. As others have said, it's a bit too easy and possible to win without really knowing what you're doing. With a bit of balancing and some different levels (e.g. more varied table arrangements) it could be a quite engrossing game.

Temporal Agent by Deykoweec 2012-09-07T17:43:00

Awesome concept. I liked the situations that arose from the time travel mechanic. Controlling the character using the tilt was quite hard work, although kind of an enjoyable challenge in itself. The graphics and menus felt quite polished; the tutorial could have done with a bit of proof reading.

DNA Wars by nka 2012-09-02T00:43:00

Great game, with a simple but very effective mechanic. I did encounter a bug on my second go (before I'd figured things out yet) where the dead mutations stopped leaving behind DNA fragments for me to collect, making the game impossible. Thought I was just really bad at it for a while before I realised something was amiss and refreshed. Afterwards got the hang of it, although it's still a well-balanced game and stays challenging throughout.

Winding of Isaac by TehSkull 2012-09-02T17:33:00

Interesting concept but needs a bit more work to be playable. Having sufficient control to aim for arrows was pretty muble. Pressing the letters H and C seemed to make a difference, but I'm assuming they're a debugging tool rather than part of the gameplay. The music was nice.

alteration by rusticated 2012-09-11T18:28:00

Quite nice graphics. In fact it felt pretty polished. The music was a bit repetitive and became slightly annoying after a while. I think the level design could do with a bit of work: It was hard to approach the third level logically since you couldn't even see the goal until you'd already spent a while flipping switches, and randomly faffing seemed to be about as effective as any systematic approach. I found the controls slightly annoying to (would have been good if just holding down an arrow key kept you moving in the same direction). The fundamentals are there for a great game though, with some more thoughtful level design.

Geomelution by Sh1rogane 2012-08-27T14:46:00

Great, fun, and pretty challenging games. Graphics and sound were high-quality too.

Nom's Evolvathlon by bvanschooten 2012-09-08T09:58:00

This was a really neat concept and it felt reasonably polished. I found the controls a little bit unintuitive with the mouse on desktop, but they were great with a touchscreen on Android. I liked that there was a puzzle element to picking the correct evolutions in the right order on each level (although it was annoying you had to completely start over if you got one wrong) and enjoyed the very different styles of play that came with each evolution. The graphics were quite cute too.

Treevolution by djacobs7 2012-09-02T12:10:00

Quirky and really nicely presented. A bit tedious having to wait a long time when you choose an incorrect combination, although some of the correct combinations are quite amusing. Reminds me a bit of the old LucasArts point-and-click adventure games, where things always made sense on some odd level of logic (e.g. you need it to rain, so you start washing a car and naturally it rains immediately afterwards).

The Evolution of Time by jomacel 2012-09-01T23:32:00

There are some really cool ideas in here. The controls are weird and could be a little bit frustrating, but allowed for some neat gameplay once you got used to them. I liked the way you could stick to surfaces, and being able to 'ride' a trail of positive particles, or use negative particles to your advantage. The game was fiendishly difficult, and I couldn't get past the tumbling white platforms on the first semi-3D level. I agree the English could do with checking over, but it's not a big deal and I got the idea. Would love to see this game developed further and polished up a bit.

Clever Blocks by Cthulhu 2012-09-08T15:58:00

This was quite fun to play, although it felt a bit easy and you didn't really have to think much about the different types of block. The graphics and sound werequite good and I'd be interested in playing a more challenging/balanced version. Multiplayer could be very good.

Outside of the Test Tube by ramoncb 2012-09-01T23:47:00

Lovely graphics: I like how all the units looked very different, but everything worked together as a whole. The gameplay needs a bit of work as discussed above. There's a big advantage to building canon at the far left of the map, since they get more shots out before the baddies reach them. I found if I put a row of five there I didn't need to build anything else, and I couldn't come close to winning with any other strategy (it seems you have to build five canon as they can only fire in a straight line, and once you've done that you don't have any credits left over).

ANT FIGHT CLUB by gamblore 2012-09-07T16:58:00

This has the potential to be a really addictive game: I like the mix of planning and battle phases. It would have been good to have a bit more guidance about the effects of the different coloured chemicals, and the very passive battle screen could get a bit boring (as far as I could tell, the only thing you could do was influence the order in which your ants fought, but it didn't make much difference).

The Fromagist by ABPositive03 2012-09-01T22:50:00

Nice. Tenuous link to the theme, but this was really fun and quite unique.

Super-Human by talhakaya 2012-09-01T13:03:00

This was really fun to play. Got a bit easy when I realised you could shoot backwards while running away from things. Good game mechanic though and (intentionally?) hilarious sound effects.

ContraEvolution by the.vaber 2012-08-29T22:23:00

Wonderful graphics and sound, giving it a great overall mood. The core mechanic is quite cool, but the setup felt a bit futile from the player's PoV: Would be good to have a bit more variation or development in the gameplay (e.g. the player getting stronger over time, or occasional powerups).

Firefly by timtipgames 2012-09-02T18:24:00

Felt very polished. A rather slow-paced game, but I was playing it on the train with nothing else to do, and the music made it really relaxing. A perfect low-stress time-filler.

AGAIN Corp: Adaptive Genetic Artificially Initiated Corporation by CapGrip 2012-09-08T19:10:00

I really enjoyed this game although it was pretty brutal. I don't think the evolution mechanism needs explaining: I started playing the game before reading the hint above, and it was quite fun working out what was happening and how to make use of it. The graphics were lovely, although as mentioned elsewhere, the controls and clipping etc. were slightly buggy. I also encountered a couple of odd one-off bugs: My avatar respawning in pitch darkness unable to move, and my avatar behaving like he was underwater after respawning (so he could 'swim' through air). The learning curve was tough in places, but generally quite well judged. However, I think the game really needed some kind of save or (probably better) checkpoint mechanism, since there were a few tricky bits that took me quite a long time to work my way back to each time I failed to get past them.

Robo Rancher by metadept 2012-08-29T22:43:00

Innovative idea and nice graphics. Some sound would make a big difference I think. The gameplay got a little bit repetitive: Perhaps the test chamber could be made more exciting/challenging.

Pursuit Of True Self by Kyoutashan 2012-08-29T23:04:00

This was quite fun and a bit bizarre (in a good way, reminds me of various crazy Japanese console games). I found the phrases floating around a bit weird, although occasionally quite funny (like a blue 'Never give up' immediately followed by a barrage of red 'GIVE UP's). The graphics were quite endearing and the bounciness of the controls felt good too. I think I agree with aschearer's comments about the gameplay.

Neural Nodes by Kmad 2012-09-01T12:56:00

Excellent game with a simple but very effective mechanic. The different unit types really worked and it was good using them to different effect. I'd be interested to see how you could develop the game further post-compo: I completed it first time but would consider it a great first level of a bigger game. I suppose you could have different maps and starting configurations (fewer players, or more spread out). Also might be interesting to allow the slugs to re-capture nodes. I really like the graphics and mood too - some sound would have been good though.

Panspermia by camdensegal 2012-08-27T20:58:00

Great game. Exactly the sort of thing LD should be about IMHO. I like the graphics, the simple intuitive controls but varied gameplay, the Angry Birds style scoring and the overall mood a lot. Agree with other commenters that the meteors could be faster (i.e. faster speed for a given trajectory). Some audio would be nice too. Finally, I'd like to be able to pick up the game where I left off before after quitting and returning.

Chromasome by Jeremy Nikolai 2012-09-07T17:32:00

Really interesting mechanic, and quite fun to play around with, although the controls could be slightly fiddly at times (wasn't sure how to deselect anything). I liked the way the game progressed, although the layer levels were a bit of a strain on the eyes on my smartphone.

Species:Chappy by hnjslater 2012-09-01T16:17:00

It's a neat idea, and I liked that each level was different and that it wasn't immediately obvious what you had to do (made each level a unique puzzle). Would be good to have had some more levels, but I guess you ran out of time.

Game Of City Life by Bitspace 2012-09-11T18:18:00

I definitely like the idea (kind of a stripped-down SimCity) and thought it was well executed. It's a really impressive game for 72 hours. The controls were sometimes a bit clunky (a lot of clicks to add a single building) but my main problem was that nothing 'bad' seemed to happen: I could just go on autoplay and build a load of stuff, with the interactions of pollution and luxury not really presenting me any problems. I think with a bit more challenge and a bit more feedback to the player this would be a really fun game though.

Ancestry Haters by raver 2012-09-02T11:59:00

Really nice game mechanic. I liked how you had to exploit it in different ways to solve each level, and the last two were nice little puzzles. Would be interested in seeing the game taken further with more levels.

42 Stories by Priapus 2012-09-11T18:52:00

Brilliant game. Simple but very effective game mechanic (you have to plan ahead carefully). As others have said, the AI isn't that great, and there are a few breaking strategies. Could be a great Android/iOS game if the AI was a bit more clever, or amazing as a multiplayer game on web/desktop (please do this!). Graphics and sound were beautiful. Not sure what it has to do with the theme though...

No Tap Enis by Nile 2012-08-31T22:54:00

Good use of canvas. I actually like that the stick gets harder to manoeuver as it gets bigger, although there should be some corresponding advantage as well. Maybe the other sticks that get created should damage you if you hit them, and perhaps even start chasing you? - Then being bigger could allow you to take more damage, and it would give the game an end condition.

Caveman's Quest for Food by jfroco 2012-09-08T10:23:00

This was brilliant. Really reminiscent of lots of early nineties games in terms of graphics and difficulty, but with a uniquely simple gameplay mechanic. Everything about it, from the sound effects to the level design, was really perfectly judged. The only thing I would change would be to add more levels!

Troll Spirit by zzorn 2012-09-08T10:10:00

I like the idea of a kind of 'pocket Black & White', as well as the thoughts from your trolls when you watched them (reminded me of the punters in Theme Park a bit). It ran very fast on my HTC One X though and was all a bit bewildering with trolls flying everywhere. I think it would be much more enjoyable if it was slightly slower paced and identifying your own trolls was easier. Once the basic gameplay was down, it would be good to see this developed further (e.g. with missions or simple resource management).

"Natural" Selection by r4m0n 2012-09-01T13:32:00

I like the idea for the use of the theme, although it was hard to tell how effective it was. Was the group behaviour of ships part of their evolution? They tended to cluster in unassailable groups at the top of the screen, which meant they survived, but didn't pose much threat either. Agree with others that the controls felt a bit sluggish - the turbo version was definitely an improvement.

One Day To Breed by Hazel 2012-09-01T11:22:00

This was really fun. I really liked the combination of game elements: Frantically trying to find a mate, while avoiding the spikes, and attempting to follow the 'nearest mate' indicator in the bottom left (which I guess actually makes sense, since pheremones or whatever would tell you proximity but not direction). I thought the controls were fine and I liked the movement of the cat, although the camera angle was occasionally a bit awkward. I couldn't tell what the little cubes that you could eat were for; they didn't seem to increase my score or anything else. I thought the graphics and sound worked really well.

ProtoZoo by raver1975 2012-09-07T16:33:00

I like the retro vector graphics. Controls were a bit trickyon Android but it was still quite fun to play with. I agree with comments above that a bit more of a goal to aim for would be good.

Lamarck's Theory of Evolution by Gear 2012-08-31T23:05:00

Graphics were minimalist but (I thought) effective. I found it odd that you had to collide with other critters in order to upgrade, but that you also seemed to be supposed to avoid it... I liked the way they chased you and you had to time it carefully to fire at them. I didn't mind the controls, except that only being able to face in eight directions was a bit frustrating.

Epocalypse by wupto 2012-09-01T13:26:00

Excellent mood, graphics and sound. The gameplay seemed really polished too, although it felt like a little bit of a grind at times. The increasingly aggressive zombies each time you leveled up, and the use of 'nighttime' were great.

TONE by DGoodayle 2012-09-01T16:26:00

This was quite fun: Simple but effective mechanic, and the visuals were great. I don't mind about the music, but it would have been awesome to make better use of sound effects instead. Nicely challenging too, although I think I did pretty well (about 1.2M points).

Warspace by TaslemGuy 2012-09-01T16:43:00

Would benefit from some polish, but the levels were quite varied and presented interesting puzzles/challenges. Never worked out how to use the circular units - were they just big heavy blockers that couldn't shoot at all?

Biotic by aeonofdiscord 2012-08-27T20:47:00

Five stars for mood. Lovely graphics and complementary audio. I managed to 'win' by getting the green critters to kill all of the red ones on the screen, and having a group camping out in each corner to eat newcomers (it's easy enough to split up the group by placing food in opposite directions.)

Maybe the lack of win/lose condition makes it more of a toy than a game? Still a great start for a game though: Arcade-style games are usually a fun toy plus some kind of challenge.

Complexitivity by Accidental Rebel 2012-09-01T13:12:00

Excellent game. It feels really polished, and the mechanic is very fun (frantically search for and running after repair nodes while carefully avoiding gaps). I love the use of the theme (the *terrain* evolves - making the game different each time). I found it quite hard at first until I had a repair node spawn somewhere I thought was unreachable, and realised that you could jump. Still nicely challenging though. Might be nice to make it slightly more tactical (e.g. choosing where to deploy each repair node rather than it just taking effect wherever you pick it up, or having multiple repair nodes appear at a time and having to choose which one to go for).

Darwin Skirmish by panzermancer 2012-08-27T20:41:00

Nice. Disorienting at first but quite fun when I got into it. Definitely a good innovation over the usual RTS resource gathering & construction model. I agree with kyyrma that selecting units is quite difficult (even when not zoomed out) as they tend to bobble about a bit even when not running around. The units also had a tendency to get stuck behind things (although I wouldn't expect amazing pathfinding in an LD entry).

HumanTECH by minism 2012-09-11T21:08:00

Nice retro-style game. I think it's a good beginning, but the gameplay maybe needs to be a bit more varied and/or challenging. It was fairly easy, and felt a little bit dull at times. I liked the use of the theme though. I found the firing controls made aiming quite difficult. Sometimes the armed NPCs, in their eagerness to chase me, got themselves stuck in a wall. Slightly disappointing ending too ("Congratulations!", exit). I like the retro graphics, and the sound worked fine for me and was really effective.

Omega Architecture by kibertoad 2012-09-01T23:20:00

This felt like quite a well-polished game, great sound and graphics (and quite amusing audio). The R&D screens could have done with some more polish a bit more explanation: I managed to start making progress and could just about see how it all fit together, but there was generally a lot of information without much explanation. Also, at the rate the counter was going down, the game would have taken hours to complete.

Super Genome: Hyper Evolution Turbo Edition by Raptor85 2012-09-07T16:26:00

Nice concept. I'd like to play it after a little more polish. I couldn't really work out what determined how much health you gainwhich made it difficult to progress or decide what to do tactically.

Block Shoot by KhaoTom 2012-09-01T22:43:00

This was quite a lot of fun - fast paced and frenetic. I enjoyed the retro sound effects too. I'm not sure I buy the evolution gimmick, but I did notice the blocks becoming more advanced after playing for a while (firing more complex patterns of buttons and moving more evasively).

Trinity Labs by Gareth Jenkins 2012-09-02T09:44:00

I played this to the end, but it became a bit of a death march in the last level. I never quite figured out the rules for things evolving: It seemed like sometimes three items would evolve if they only matched in colour, but not in type. I could reproduce this consistently, but it was really hard to experiment because you had to place items *very carefully* in the cells for them to evolve. It was also frustrating how items would occasionally bounce off each other and float into space while you were moving them. Nice graphics though and some neat ideas. Would like to see it polished up.

LD33 — You are the Monster

Super Dino Dino Attack by FrederickK 2015-08-27T22:22:00

Quite fun to play, but was a bit short! Didn't quite understand what caused the player character to die (was it just touch a human while not in attack mode?) and seemed a bit odd that the dead sprite just kind of hung around while the new player sprite appeared (although I guess that makes more sense in a way).

Minotaur and the Theseus by hgcummings 2015-08-25T21:12:00

Thanks to everyone who's given feedback. @WubAlliance: Yep, definitely agree about having a meter to indicate the time left. This was one of the first things on my feature list (e.g. a graphic of a candle burning down) and I never quite got around to implementing it.

I agree that the difficulty levels are a bit steep. Didn't really spend a lot of time balancing them. I did at some point convince myself that Monstrous was possible if you got very lucky, but I'm not sure this is actually the case.

Minotaur and the Theseus by hgcummings 2015-08-27T22:46:00

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. @Chronodrax - interesting, I coincidentally just pushed a very minor bugfix that I think resolves the crossing issue. Not sure about the more complex case of hiding behind a wall. I agree there are probably a couple of breaking strategies though. Was a little bit tricky to balance the difficulty and make it hard enough to get around Theseus in time to block the exit.

Monster Truck Logistics by PTSnoop 2015-08-24T19:47:00

I don't seem to be able to click past the instructions screen on Windows (clicking the 'Got it' button, hitting return or spacebar have no effect).

Brainless Attack by ReddogStone 2015-09-02T20:41:00

Really great game. Clever idea and very nice implementation. The sound affects were amusing too. I like the puzzles that arose from the simple mechanic, although the exact details might need a little tweaking as some levels could also be won by just randomly clicking without too much thought.

Nessie: Hide 'n' Eat by Jerre 2015-09-01T20:23:00

Fun game with a neat mechanic. Quite like the dark mood of the artwork and audio as well (although the audio did get a bit grating). Wasn't quite clear what the end condition was as I seemed to survive a few hits before dying.

Ludzilla by highlyinteractive 2015-08-26T23:12:00

The music is brilliant. Graphics and overall mood are really good too. The monster's attack motion felt a little bit slow and unnatural, which slightly got in the way of it being a fun rampage.

Milky Helps People by reheated 2015-08-29T01:01:00

Wonderful, bonkers story and very satisfying puzzles in the gameplay. Kept me engaged all the way to the end.

It's All OGRE Now! by Spaghetti and Meatball 2015-08-25T20:53:00

Really fun game and nicely polished too. Good use of humour and nailed the awesome rampage mechanic, but with nice touches so it's not mindless (e.g. need a bit of thought to deal with archers and choose the best upgrades).

Project MONSTER by 0x0961h 2015-08-24T20:05:00

Good graphics and sound, and great overall mood. Fun to play and nicely challenging too. Nice try with the theme - I'm guessing you were hoping the voting would go a different way :)

Cave Lord by sbarrio 2015-08-31T20:23:00

Felt like a really well-polished game. Nice art style and music. The fighting felt a little bit clunky, although I enjoyed the descriptions ("Mad crab is REALLY mad at you!")

Pedestrian Slaughterer by Linus123xbb 2015-08-27T22:05:00

Fun game with nice graphics and physics. I did find the controls a bit unforgiving and I wasn't very good at avoiding buildings (the very fast reverse gear tripped me up a lot). Would have been nice to have a bit more control of the hovercraft, and could be a lot of fund to do things like powerslide through a huge crowd.

Monster Cookie Factory by buggy213 2015-08-31T20:45:00

This could be a lot of fun with some more polish. Very challenging to focus on all four conveyer belts at the same time. I seemed to lose even when I successfully removed any 'contaminants' though and directed the monsters to eat delicious cookies. Some visual feedback for the 'eat' controls would have helped a bit I think, and maybe a slower ramp-up in difficulty.

Akumajou Crapula by MaesK 2015-08-24T19:44:00

The 'symmetric teleport' mechanic is a neat idea and fun to play with. I like the graphics style too.

Unrelated to scoring, the game didn't run that well for me: I had to put it in fullscreen before it would pick up the keyboard at all, and it scaled to the full height of my (4:3) monitor so a lot of the level got cut off the sides (making it harder to play).

Da Awsum Spelankar by MetoolDaddy 2015-08-31T20:58:00

Very funny and innovative intepretation of the theme, and quite fun to play (although occasionally a little glitchy, especially around jumping). Neat idea of working backwards through the game, and the instant restart was a good touch to make me keep playing until the end. I can't tell whether the error at the end was a bug or indicated that I'd achieved my goal!

Toy Monster by megahold 2015-08-31T20:17:00

I like that this is more than just shooting and there are tactics involved in using the shields and other special abilities effectively. Found even the second level pretty hard before working out how to make the most of these. Music was a bit annoying :)

Heavy Hunt by Ping78 2015-08-26T23:36:00

I really liked the first person perspective, together with the attack animation and moody dark graphics it really set the tone well. I wasn't very good at catching animals though and I couldn't tell if there were any other objectives beyond this.

Clickacabra by foolmoron 2015-08-26T23:43:00

Interesting concept, definitely fits the theme well. I found it a little too abstract and did feel a bit too much like just pushing numbers around, but with some stronger visuals around the core mechanic I can see it being a bit addictive.

KleenEmUp by tanjent 2015-09-02T20:45:00

Nice game. Simple concept; very well executed. The variety of shapes and regurgitation mechanic lead to some interesting puzzles.

Dienasties by Colthor 2015-08-26T23:29:00

A bit bewildering at first but definitely an interesting concept. The tactic of just targeting the weakest castle was pretty effective for the most part, but I can definitely see how the morale mechanic could be used to construct more tricky puzzles that force the player to exploit the family relationships.

Vampshire by Aggrathon 2015-08-31T20:30:00

Nice artwork and audio, and amusing interpretation of the theme! A little bit hard to get into (and slightly too easy to accidentally bankrupt yourself). I liked the way all the different buildings interacted (a bit like Settlers). Perhaps an in-game tutorial would make it easier to get into.

Minotaur by MrSylar59 2015-08-24T19:58:00

I liked the overall mood and the graphics (the sprites were well-drawn in particular). The gameplay was pretty solid although it felt like a bit of a slow start. I also found the player movement slightly buggy (sometimes lost the ability to move in certain directions for some reason).

Specimen by jsmars 2015-08-24T20:18:00

Great mood, graphics and sfx. The different environments (e.g. the marine lab) were really well done, and it seemed really solid overall. I thought the animations on the player character's sprite were really well done and kind of amusing (especially the falling and climbing modes). Agree with what some others have said that the movement seemed a bit unforgiving, but perhaps I just don't play platformers enough. Took me a while to get started: A lot of aimless wandering around without much new to see, although it helped that the game is generally quite slick and good-looking.

A battle for the graveyard by Yamzho 2015-08-24T19:52:00

Really nice graphics and overall consistency/mood. The gameplay is very simple, but I really like these multiplayer on single machine games, and the various special abilities of the monsters was a nice touch.

Jalu - green-eyed monster by petitpois 2015-08-27T22:18:00

Great interpretation of the theme. I also found it nicely balanced (managed to finish just within the time limit). Did spot a couple of those collision detection issues when jumping around.

Undercowver by PixelStuff 2015-08-25T21:00:00

Brilliant feel (graphics, mood etc.) and nice simple concept that was fun to play. I agree with some of the other comments that it was quite hard to successfully beam the cows up rather than just launching them into the night's sky.

Hydro Carbon by bentglasstube 2015-08-26T23:18:00

Nice concept, by which I mean horrible concept, by which I mean good job fitting the theme! Also some really nice artwork. I did find that the very slow normal (non-boosted) speed of the boat made the game feel quite sluggish and detracted from the fun of it a bit.

Trapped & Angry by stevenlr 2015-08-31T20:35:00

Really nice game, great music and graphics, and fun to play.

Carcass Moon by bldh 2015-09-01T20:29:00

Got it working by downloading the executable and data folders separately. Had the same issue as Vaiaphraim that there seemed to be only one grave, and although I could repeatedly spawn zombies from it they always seemed to get stuck at the same obstacle. I like the idea of spawning a zombie horde, but just growing them isn't very interactive.

Kibjow by Zeriver 2015-08-31T20:41:00

Really great artworks and nice gameplay mechanic. Controls were a little odd (especially jumping) and I didn't work out how to avoid the wall of death on level 2 (but from the assets it looks like there is no level three). Would definitely like to see the mechanic fleshed out with more levels and puzzles.

The Sickening by michael.meadows 2015-08-31T20:10:00

Cool mechanic and fun to play. Nicely challenging too towards the end. The controls felt a little awkward with the mouse but I think it would work really well on touch screens.

Embizzle by Norgg 2015-09-01T20:35:00

Nice concept, took me a couple of minutes to figure out but I enjoyed it once I worked out how everything fit together. Gameplay was a bit slow (mostly waiting around for the next cycle). Would have been good to make it more interactive or realtime somehow.

Candy Monster by Berserker_Chris 2015-09-01T20:39:00

Fun game; I really liked the stealth mechanic and the graphics were nice. I also liked the SFX but found the background audio a bit grating.

Village Defender by RedFil 2015-09-01T20:44:00

Good graphics and good consistent style. I found the movement a bit clunky and it would have been good to have some animation or for attacking to make it a bit clearer. Nice challenging gameplay with the waves of multiple adventurers.

Monster in a spaceship by cheery 2015-08-25T21:07:00

Nice entry. I had a quick look at the source too and it's impressively little code. I guess the AI must be quite simple but it looks quite clever (the way people will split up and evade you). I found Level 3 much harder than the others due to having lots of loops (which the AI exploits rather well).

Princess Harem by tal 2015-08-25T20:44:00

Interesting idea, a bit odd but effective. The controls felt a little bit clunky. I liked the graphics, especially the lo-fi background texture.

SAW by Vereos 2015-08-27T22:11:00

Really novel concept and great use of the theme. The trial-and-error monster trivia mechanic is really unusual and tying it in with the story was a neat idea.

The Supper by jrhee 2015-09-04T21:23:00

Brilliant graphics, mood and audio. Really innovative and interesting gameplay too. I felt like the maybe weren't quite enough variables to make the gameplay really compelling (basically seems like you have to successfully charm two people fairly early on and then kill off the rest), but it's a great core to build on.

Dudes in Space by TheOlinone 2015-08-26T23:05:00

Nice concept and I liked the graphics style a lot. Could definitely see this being expanded on with more levels and more interesting puzzles requiring the player to combine the characters special abilities.

Dudes in Space by TheOlinone 2015-08-26T23:06:00

Nice concept and I liked the graphics style a lot. Could definitely see this being expanded on with more levels and more interesting puzzles requiring the player to combine the characters special abilities. Controls were fine, but I had trouble getting the Sneak guy to actually sneak past a drone.

You are the Loch Ness Monster by LeekAnarchism 2015-08-24T19:37:00

Nice game! I found it a bit unforgiving initially (not much space between the distance at which boats can see you at all and the distance at which they rumble you) but it was very fun once I got the hang of it. The difficulty ramps up nicely as you get more ships of different speeds, requiring a pleasing level of ingenuity to score them all. I liked the music too. Overall I found myself smiling a lot while playing this game.

Necro Monster by Solchain 2015-09-02T20:56:00

Nice game: Good graphics and music too. I found the gameplay a bit confusing at first and slightly repetitive after I got the hang of it, but it's a solid idea and could be a lot of fun with some minor tweaks.

Sock Monster by donaldm 2015-09-02T20:59:00

Fun game! Nice well-rounded entry. Intuitive to play and nicely challenging with the cats getting more inquisitive each time you ate.

Dungeon Defense by pickeloe5 2015-09-02T20:51:00

Interesting take on the theme and good idea for the core mechanic but needed a little more to make it into a game I think. Without knowing where the crawler was going to appear it seemed like there couldn't be much strategy to placing the monsters, and the outcome seemed a bit random anyway. The best strategy seemed to be to place them all in the same room (so the player couldn't benefit from multiple health boosts between monsters) and hope for the best. The levels were all pretty much the same too. I do like the idea, and would be interested to see it developed a bit further.

Yeti Destruction - Ski Resort by snade 2015-08-31T20:51:00

Great graphics and very funny. I liked the Yeti's evil monocle. The ski resort punters were hilariously bad and often did a great job of wiping themselves out on trees, but it was very satisfying to take out a big group of them. Would be good to have some way of boosting your own speed from time to time (e.g. by a powerup, or as a result of a jump) as it felt just the tiniest bit sluggish.

Snake in the Sky by rogberth 2015-09-01T20:17:00

Doesn't run for me (black empty web page, in both Chrome and Firefox)

LD39 — Running out of Power

AstroMouse by SkullPixel 2017-08-01T17:20:24Z

Really nice little game, like a pocket FTL. The graphics are lovely and the music is very good too. I agree with Switching between rooms and between views makes the gameplay a bit stop-start at times, but also presents a nice challenge to the player.

Asteroids by MianaGames 2017-08-01T16:51:26Z

Really great game! Very challenging, but in a good way. Attempting to collect the energy cubes while still avoiding asteroids is really difficult but feels achievable, which is perfect. This kind of challenging gameplay, especially together with the short play time, and instant restart makes it quite addictive. Graphics are simple but effective, and the sounds and music are solid. I like the way the power limitations force you to be a bit more tactical and choose between just shooting everything and manoeuvring your way around. Excellent work!

Audio Hook (formerly Hook, Beat, & Keeper) by mrjoshuamclean 2017-08-01T19:06:09Z

Interesting mechanics and fun to play. I like the mechanic of collecting then having to defend for a period. It worked really well and gave a nice arc to each level. The music was cool too!

The Hackerman by Steing 2017-08-01T17:13:15Z

Haha! This is infuriating but entertaining. Great use of classic forum spam and hollywood movier hacker stereotypes. Audio and graphics are simple but effective too.

StarAway by frogcheese 2017-08-22T11:52:57Z

Nice game. Great use of the power mechanic. It was tricky to hit the pads by speeding up or slowing down at the right time, but rewarding once I got the knack for it.

If expanding on this, I would make the later levels faster-paced, to ramp up the difficulty and make it more exhilarating.

The game reminds me of SkyRoads by Blue Moon, which had similar graphics and power mechanics. See http://www.bluemoon.ee/history/skyroads/index.html

No Sorcerer's Sky by TheFlyingKeyboard 2017-08-01T10:28:22Z

Nice graphics and music! I think I understood what I wanted to do: Build modules to gather resources and build better modules, but I couldn't work out how to capture any of the scrap flying past, or even how to steer the spacestation at all (no keyboard keys or mouse interactions seemed to do anything). With clearer controls and a bit more progression options would be a fun game.

uRUNium by yopox 2017-08-01T10:40:04Z

Really nicely polished game! The graphics were excellent and I really liked the world map / level selector. Controls were slightly frustrating at times (I missed a lot of jumps while still getting the hang of them), but no more than any other unfamiliar platformer.

AtomoS by DayDreamerStudios 2017-08-01T19:00:21Z

Nice work on a well-made game. I found the controls slightly awkward, although the minimal UI is really cool. It's pretty punishing too (touching a single grey atom is effectively instant death), but that's not a bad thing. Increasing the player sprite's speed a bit might make it feel more responsive and slightly ease the difficulty curve.

Flastronaut by Bill Zeng 2017-08-01T18:46:14Z

I really enjoyed this game. The graphics and music are good, and the mechanics simple but effective. I like the way they combine, and the player can move around to direct their flashlight at the plant and ghosts at the same time. The different types of ghosts are a nice touch. One of them stole my flashlight!

Trap in the dark by azziliz 2017-08-01T10:19:12Z

Nice mechanic and great use of the theme! Works really well on the later (presumably procedurally generated?) levels where you have to memorise as much of the maze as possible, and decide whether to push your luck by going for a crystal. Gives a good sense of urgency and provides an interesting challenge as the levels ramp up in complexity. A couple of minor things to improve it: Later levels don't make any use of the HP-sapping hazards introduced earlier in the game, which I'm guessing was just down to time limitations. Also, the level generator often placed crystals in unreachable places (the opposite side of the exit).

Bunker by Maesen 2017-08-01T18:52:53Z

This is a really fun game. Graphics and sound are simple but very well done, and the level design is excellent. The different elements (lasers and magnetic doors) are used really effectively and I love how each level presents a different challenge. Would have happily carried on playing if there were more levels!

P.S.: You might want to update your links. The link to the playable game is labelled as the source code.

Spacesquid Spaceship by Nezumi Games 2017-08-01T16:37:08Z

Awesome game! Really well polished and nicely balanced, with excellent graphics too. I love the power-charging mini game and how it becomes more challenging over time. Frantically dashing between different tasks was really fun. Works really well on touch screen too; could make a great mobile game with a few tweaks (reminds me a bit of Space Team in terms of how frantic it is). Well done!

Office Wars by Lumous 2017-08-01T10:02:56Z

Fun setting and good use of the theme. I liked the AI of the other robots, which seemed to go and seek extra power when they needed it, or stay at their desk if you kept feeding them. I wasn't sure whether throwing things other than batteries (e.g. coffee mugs and other office equipment) had any effect, or what the cardboard boxes were for.

The Crossing by Crabman 2017-08-01T10:10:19Z

Excellent mood and consistent style. I love the parallax mountains in the background! I didn't quite get the hang of the gameplay (I died of exhaustion a lot), in particular I didn't seem to be able to use sleep very effectively, and wasn't sure whether having more power allowed you to move faster or just staved off exhaustion. The progress indicator is neat though.

LD46 — Keep it alive

Dorfromantik by yazara 2020-05-02T22:01:58Z

Absolutely love the art style of this. The graphics are really polished and wouldn't look out of place in a commercial game.

I like the core mechanic. I find that part of the joy of these kinds of tile-laying games is building neat little layouts while also meeting the goals of the game. I couldn't see a way to rotate tiles before placing them, which would have helped with this.

Also, the rewards for building disconnected groups of trees/houses/fields encouraged spreading out the tiles a lot more, which made things look less neat. It would be nice to have a way to split up groups without having to do this. Perhaps the railway lines could count as dividers, like roads in Carcassonne divide fields? (In fact, I couldn't work out whether the railway lines had any functional significance at all; they didn't seem to, although I like the way they looked in the game).

Overall I really enjoyed it though. Just a few mechanical tweaks and a nice soundtrack would make this into an excellent game.

HARD IMPACT by Nek 2020-05-07T14:59:34Z

Love the synthwave aesthetic, and this was fun to play. Although short, the level design was really good: the first mini-level introduced the mechanics really well with no text, and the second level was challenging enough to take a few tries (and demand some degree of learning how to use speed/jumping) while always seeming achievable enough to make me want to keep trying.

Gino the Neutrino by Dark_Power 2020-05-07T12:13:31Z

Really nice idea, well executed and fun to play. The graphics and music are great. I love the art style, the space cats and the duck.

Quiet Steady Dragonfly by hijomo 2020-05-02T21:13:19Z

Ah, it's a tamagotchi! I don't know if that's what you were inspired by, but it's a great idea for a game jam to work with a very minimalist concept like that. Also, they sold tens of millions of those things back in the 90s, so if you can find a way to capture some of that nostalgia you might be onto something.

Doesn't seem to be all that much to the game yet, but it could be interesting to extend and polish it while keeping with that very minimal retro style.

Hextayin' Alive by alareo 2020-04-21T19:24:16Z

I really liked this. It's a nice twist on game of life and definitely turns it into something that feels like a game. Step-wise real-time strategy is a concept I haven't seen before, and took a little getting used to. This feels like a game that could have quite a lot of depth to it, even with simple rules, which is a really hard thing to achieve. Nice work! Would be interested to see something with different goals to aim for (rather than just maintaining balance) and perhaps different scenarios, which could allow players to get a lot of mileage out of the same simple set of core rules.

The Call of the Unicore by sndr 2020-05-07T14:43:06Z

Great graphics and mood! Fun gameplay too; and a nice level of challenge.

Not sure whether the item spawns were entirely random or not, but food seemed a bit low on all of my playthroughs... my Unicore eventually died of low health each time, but if I'd been a bit more competent at fighting off enemies I think it might have died of low food, despite me picking up every single piece of food that spawned, which would have been a bit frustrating.

Until it blooms by Eryph 2020-05-02T09:26:19Z

A beautiful little game. Honestly not sure how you'd expand on it because I think it was perfectly formed. Wonderful graphics and music, and a very effective story (really impressive how it was so minimal but so effective). I thought the three elements were well balanced against each other and mechanically varied enough to keep it interesting for the duration of the story mode. I didn't play the endless mode for long because I thought the gameplay did start to become a bit repetitive there. The story mode was just brilliant though.

Wanted: Alive! by Dan Colman 2020-05-07T08:55:18Z

Really nice twist on the idea. Great graphics and overall aesthetic, and it was fun to play!

I found it pretty easy to get through, so would be interested to see how you'd expand it with further levels and keep it challenging without it becoming repetitive. Perhaps introducing other obstacles/peril (like the holes) or different player mechanics (e.g. moveable objects)?

Lamps by qkjosh 2020-05-02T09:04:47Z

Absolutely brilliant mood and graphics. Wonderfully atmospheric game. I have to admit I needed the hints in the comments to make much progress. I'd guessed that visiting the ghost friend recharged the lamp/bark, but hadn't clocked the significance of how long the lamps lit up for. I did get a "I don't want to be here" vibe from the rooms that only lit up very briefly though, so I agree with the designer's preference for communicating this through feeling rather than words (which fits really nicely with the player avatar being a dog). Maybe just need to find a way to provide players slightly more of a hint without spelling it out.

I think the main reason I gave up on my first playthrough was actually that some of the rooms were a bit similar and I thought I was going in circles. Obviously the graphics and models are amazing for a single weekend build, but if doing more work on it, a bit more variety in the look and feel of the rooms would really help (and perhaps make it easier to figure out the lamp mechanic).

Would love to see this as a full length game with a fleshed-out story being slowly revealed throughout. I can imagine all sorts of powerful endings, and different ideas for the significance of the ghostly human. I could see this being a really beautiful piece of storytelling without using any speaking/writing.

To The Bunker! by BBApps 2020-05-02T09:37:49Z

Fun game. I completed the normal mode quite easily, but the hard mode took me several tries. I never seemed to run out of time, and couldn't see a timer, so not sure if there was much of a trade off between taking side streets. I actually found it easier to just stay on the main street though because it was wider. The fact that each assassin throws just one mine means you can just wait for them to throw it and then navigate around. The main challenge seemed to come from the controls being a bit twitchy. Would be interesting to see it with some of these aspects tweaked a bit, perhaps making it more about maintaining speed and reacting to the assassins' mines.

Kingdom Trainee by ukirain 2020-05-07T12:24:40Z

I liked the art style a lot, and the game mechanic is a really good idea. I liked having to make the best of my limited hand while people came to me with their problems.

I found a bit of dissonance between the wording of the cards and the outcomes: e.g. the 2 money card sounded quite dismissive even though it was pretty good, most of the church cards sounded quite weak although they were sometimes the right solution. I was surprised how often I got away with what seemed like a weak card leading to a good outcome, and the bad outcomes didn't always seem "fair". I think some randomness (or at least hidden information) is good, but a few tweaks to the text might make it seem fairer.

Clumsy Looter by Naghen 2020-05-07T08:43:57Z

Great concept; it fits the theme really well and I love the idea of running around after a bumbling idiot trying to keep them alive. The graphics fit the humour and mood really well.

The fights were a little simplistic, but looked great, and I can see them being expanded to something with a bit more depth.

I found that the (randomly-generated?) room layouts meant it was pretty rare for Chris to actually collide with a monster. I played through a few times and barely saw him get hurt, let alone killed. Some small tweaks here could make Chris a lot more disaster-prone, really keep the player on their toes and make it a lot more fun to play.

This is Fine by D5R 2020-05-02T08:35:10Z

Great game! Really well-executed with a consistent graphical style and music. Lots of interesting and innovative puzzle mechanics. The puzzles themselves were good although some of them could have been more satisfying: some were over-constrained making it a bit too quick to find the only possible solution, and others felt a bit inelegant (high number of turns required), but a several of the later ones were very neat.

Ice Light by ThornDuck 2020-04-21T19:08:41Z

Really great core concept and wonderful mood. Quite nice puzzles too. Would definitely be interested to play an expanded version of this.

Slime Mama by Jack Kaloger 2020-05-02T21:42:37Z

Great game! Fantastic graphics and sound, and some nicely implemented mechanics (the wall jumping controls felt really good). I particularly like the visuals for respawning: very clever way to make respawing make sense in the context of the game. I also like how respawning becomes a mechanic, since you can travel far away, throw a load of food back towards the start, then respawn to collect it.

I was unable to defeat it despite several tries. I suspect I was missing something tactically... Took me a little while to realise just how far you could throw things, so I was being a bit inefficient initially. But even when I resolve that I still struggled to get past about half strength.

Don't taste the lava by mira 2020-05-02T10:07:36Z

Excellent puzzle game! Simple mechanics with lots of interesting emergent complexity. Really great mix of puzzling and speed/dexterity, and the levels were very well-designed. Introduced new ideas at a good pace and the puzzles were really satisfying to solve.

With more levels and a bit more graphical polish this would make an awesome mobile game.

I managed to complete the final level without needing the last three blocks. Was that intentional?

One minor note: playing the web version fullscreen didn't work well for me (in 4:3) but playing without fullscreen worked fine.

hype dream by Dane Tesla 2020-05-07T15:06:09Z

Really charming art style, and entertaining to play. I liked the range of different mechanics (squashing bugs, peeping at the right time, etc.) and keep on top of them all at the same time while also dealing with popups was fun.

Cheat Or Die by Kanonix 2020-05-07T08:32:58Z

Innovative mechanic, and I really liked the graphics and sound. The humour was really dark!

I found it slightly frustrating to play because it was a little bit unintuitive to tell what would be seen by the supervisor. It was mechanically consistent, but the graphics didn't exactly represent when they would catch you (sometimes they could be looking right at you, but you were out of range, sometimes they seemed to be looking away but were close enough to detect you). Telegraphing when the supervisor noticed someone looking around was really good. Making the rest of the graphics really closely match the mechanics would make this a lot more satisfying to play; you could really feel you were getting away with passing notes, rather than second-guessing the game mechanic.

Mission Impoppable by Matt Lewis 2020-05-02T10:32:26Z

5/5 for humour. Brilliant mechanics but unbelievably frustrating (in a good way)! I was unable to get past the lasers lever after numerous attempts (I can see that it's possible, but it's just SO DIFFICULT).

Great mood, audio, graphics and humour. Really well-realised idea. The balloon physics were great and made the game frustrating and fun at the same time.

Also, I love that in the character designer, "face" is apparently a boolean.

Overjammed by Nachodlv 2020-05-02T17:03:00Z

Fun game. Nice pixel art, and the meta-story was a nice touch :)

I liked the animations on the devs, especially every time the guy lost his blue thing and had a little meltdown, or when the router died and everyone panicked.

It was also good how sometimes people just got sad and you had to talk to them to cheer them up. The variation in the mechanic here was good too.

A few more varied mechanics (other than just "press space on a thing" or "pick up a thing and take it to someone") would be a great way to extend the game post-jam.

Keep Me Breathing by AstroLabe 2020-05-07T09:02:11Z

Really nice art style and music. I love how calm and relaxing it is when everything's good and how jarring the alarm sound is when things aren't (it might be even more effective to have the music fade out when the alarm starts and fade back in afterwards). Having to react quickly to all the different changes was really fun. I liked the colour theory mechanic too.

LYMPHOSITE by Saturnyoshi 2020-05-02T21:22:35Z

Great game! It's very polished and feels more like a complete game than something from a game jam. I love the graphical style, and it really reminds me of a lot of late 80s / early 90s shooters like Xenon 2.

Also, I am bad at this game... I found the relatively short range of the player's weapon made it quite challenging, especially when moving around.

I really like the variety of enemies with different styles of attack and movement.

Gaia - Keep It Alive by Hereward 2020-05-02T15:26:03Z

This was very satisfying and absorbing to play: spawning volcanoes/meteors and watching the fledgling population slowly spread out across the globe. I really like how you managed to make the topology important and a key part of the gameplay: volcanos providing more land, and population being slow to grow past mountain ranges, etc.. The graphics are really impressive and the music is very well-chosen.

It feels like not quite a whole _game_ yet, more of an enjoyable interactive simulation. But all the gameplay components that are present work really well, and it wouldn't need much more (maybe a couple of extra tools and some kind of objectives or challenge/conflict) to make it into a really compelling game.

Stay Alive by Hruy Gashaw 2020-05-02T09:10:12Z

I really liked the CRT aesthetic and simple graphics. The gameplay was intense. I felt like I didn't have all that much control over how well I did. It was mostly just moving as fast as possible rather than puzzling out the timing and firing angles of the turrets, or routes to avoid them (most levels didn't offer much choice about which route to take). Also some of the later levels seemed a bit repetitive. The fundamental gameplay is really strong though; could be a great game with a bit more time to spend on level design.

current by zzox 2020-05-02T10:47:18Z

Great game. Really nice graphics and sound, strong mechanics, and well-designed puzzles. The final level took me a *long* time to get, but it was a great puzzle. A really satisfying game to play throughout. Nice work!

How to Air by kwaku 2020-04-21T19:37:33Z

Really cute game, lovely art style. I got a bit stuck due to not being able to pick up the medkit, so couldn't complete the last square of the air generator. A bit more puzzle depth would make it more engaging too (most of the elements were just "pick up a thing and take it to the gas extractor" or "pick up a thing, use it on something else to produce another thing, and take that to the gas extractor") but these very constrained puzzle games can work really well, and it's a great start for a jam game.

Keep Bloo Alive by cavedens 2020-05-07T15:48:16Z

I really like the art style. It was fun to play as well.

One very minor annoyance was that the main menu captured the mouse but the main game didn't (I kept accidentally clicking other windows), which was probably the opposite of what I'd want.

Cydonia by Wookie 2020-05-02T15:20:06Z

Absolutely brilliant graphics and mood. I loved the co-op and light-based mechanics too, and thought you created some really interesting puzzles with them. I could also see how the story might tie in with the theme later on.

Party Animal by puntocom 2020-05-07T14:35:08Z

Oh my goodness that was stressful. The number of different things to keep track of seemed well-balanced. It felt hard but achievable. The slight variation of the mop mechanic was good. Would be nice to have a bit more variation with the other mechanics. It feels like there would be lots of scope to do so (the breaking up fights one in particular could be a minigame in itself).

PRECURSOR by thaniel 2020-04-21T19:15:39Z

Nice core mechanic, the dexterity/control challenge was quite fun. I quite like the aesthetic too (reminded me slightly of Superhot). I seem to keep getting thrown back to the start after completing the third stage, but the other comments seem to suggest there are more levels than that (maybe the game got confused by multiple monitors or something?)

Mr. Cheesy by SAVVU 2020-05-02T08:41:57Z

Very fun simple game, with a great feel and amusing graphics. Could see this being really addictive. It could do with a tiny bit more variation or difficulty ramp-up. Once I got going I found I was able to avoid damage for a really long time, until it sped up quite a lot. Perhaps the speed could ramp up a bit earlier or there could be one more kind of challenge/obstacle to deal with? I liked that the hitbox was pretty brutal (most of my damage came from switching lanes too early rather than too late, and catching on a grater just behind me).

Ruins of Waste by Arinyl 2020-05-02T09:47:00Z

Nice game! The pixelart graphics were great: the rock people were really emotive and I liked the growing grass and vines. The sounds of the cans and bottles landing were really good too.

I'm on a 4:3 screen and the bin was outside my viewport when I first played it, so I didn't really get what to do (was just throwing the trash out of the bounds of the screen). When I played again I resized the window and was able to play properly.

Rhythm Castle - Platformer/Rhythm Game by GrizzliusMaximus 2020-05-02T10:18:05Z

This looks awesome, like a cross between Celeste and Cult of the Necrodancer.

However, it didn't seem to quite work for me in a few ways: - The fixed window size meant it didn't fit on one screen for me, so was split across two monitors - None of the double-tap controls, or the double jump or glide seemed to work (I tried numerous variations of quick double taps, in time with the beat, etc., and never saw anything work) - Nothing happened when I found other sleeping moles (were they supposed to be revived or something?) - For the rhythm bit on the very first screen seemed not quite in time, the music graphics and control input all seemed not quite in time with each other. I got through it with some trial-and-error but it didn't "feel" right

I'd love to play this and see more of it. The concept is brilliant and I really like the graphics and sound.

Keep It Alive by Deadwave Games 2020-05-07T15:17:26Z

Oh wow, this was great. Not the kind of game I normally play but this was really compelling and kept me hooked until the end. The writing is very good. Excellent mood too, and the minimal graphics were really well done.

It did seem a bit light on interactivity for interactive fiction. When it offered choices they didn't seem to impact the story much (I replayed it to confirm this, but even on first playthrough it felt like the story was quite on-rails). Obviously that's quite understandable for a jam game, but if you're planning to expand on this it would be great if the story could branch a bit more.

SPIRE by xonde 2020-05-02T15:28:48Z

Sorry you didn't get to finish this. Small-scale tactics games (which this appears to be?) are one of my favourite genres, and I really like the aesthetic implied by the game UI. Would be interested to see a more completed version of this if you get the chance to work on it again.

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Permafrost Pirouette by Junber 2020-10-27T18:10:50Z

This was completely bizarre but really fun. It's very chaotic and I'm not sure how much control I really had, but it was certainly enjoyable. I played right up until I got the gun, after which I think I accidentally shot myself (is that possible?).

Time to Run by Joror 2020-10-24T10:55:32Z

Great atmosphere and really interesting mechanics. I really liked the chrono-clones and I could imagine lots of cool ways of building on this mechanic. Quite short at the moment but a really fun and innovative game.

Closing the Loop by Frederika 2020-10-07T18:12:43Z

Nice idea, could be a great educational game.

HamStuck by Tommy 2020-10-07T18:11:28Z

Great graphics and humour. I agree with @albuquerque that it was initially unclear how fast you had to go, but I got the hang of it after a while (the blue bar at the bottom seemed to be a speed indicator). Great idea for a simple compelling mobile game. It's very challenging on desktop with a mouse because it's quite easy to accidentally do one very fast loop and then you're toast.

Circuit City by firellon 2020-10-27T19:56:25Z

Really interesting idea, and I love the art style. The mechanics are straightforward but it took me a while to understand the dynamics of the game. A really interesting system though. It was a lot of fun to play with. Reminded me slightly of Rymdkapsel.

Choo Choo Circuit by Elemental Zeal Game Studios 2020-10-27T18:23:43Z

This was a really well designed puzzle, and really engaging. Lovely art style too (both graphics and audio). I really enjoyed playing it and it was very satisfying to finally solve it. Would be really intrigued to see if the concept could be extended to even more fiendish level designs.

LoopFrog: An Amphibian Odyssey by hgcummings 2020-10-07T20:11:53Z

@daniel-whittaker you are a frog, not a car. Don't aim for the road exit :)

LoopFrog: An Amphibian Odyssey by hgcummings 2020-10-23T16:11:37Z

@frederika I'm sorry to hear it made you dizzy! I had the same issue during development of the game. Part of the reason for adding the fog was to mitigate this, but it looks like that didn't completely resolve the issue.

Numpad Looper by dikkop 2020-10-09T14:36:49Z

Really great idea that made for a very compelling game. I was initially confused by the sound effects for completing each loop and completing each level (they both sounded like I'd done something wrong or lost a life, rather than done something right and made progress). Core mechanic is really solid, and there was an interesting variety of levels. Fairly short levels made it quite compelling to keep playing too. This could be the basis for a great game with some more time work on the sound/graphics/feel and lots more levels.

Demongraft by kazuo256 2020-10-27T18:04:29Z

This is a really intriguing game. I found actual gameplay quite minimal, but the surrounding mechanics were really interesting. Almost more of an art piece than a game. The visual style and music were excellent. It's obviously quite small at the moment and I can't imagine how it might be expanded, but I'd be very interested to find out.

Flip a Talk by gamescodedogs 2020-10-23T16:08:55Z

Really great art style (although no sound for me on the web version) and a very cool idea. I'm really interested in games that teach different skills and aren't just about hitting things with swords.

I'm not totally sure what the learning goal is supposed to be. The focus on conversations is good, but there doesn't seem to be any way to resolve things amicably, and not much benefit from positive actions like complimenting your opponent or explaining yourself. Perhaps I just didn't play far enough through though. It would be interesting to see those elements brought in and rewarded some how (perhaps also keeping the current options like insulting people, but showing the consequences of these).

Golden Ratio by eusekerci 2020-10-10T17:22:46Z

Fun to play something so simple but also completely different. Great work on a really innovative idea. Once I figured out what was going on I found it a bit challenging to really influence what was happening: it was very hard to keep the ball in the main square where you could score points, and there wasn't much to do in the other squares.

Would be interested to see this developed with more variation and significance given to the other squares.

The Circulation Desk by FireTwin 2020-10-23T15:19:06Z

Nice atmospheric/mood. The graphics and music work really well together. Reminds me a little bit of Papers Please. Would be a good basis for a more narrative game.

ReBeat by Alex Davies 2020-10-24T17:16:43Z

Really love the concept. The level design was good and raised some interesting puzzles. I got stuck on level 3 for ages until I realised one of the purple loops was empty...

Winning a level often resulted in something that didn't sound very musical, and I didn't find there was enough control over timing for it to be a rhythm game. It would be great to have a stronger connection between the music and the game.

Escape From Rotting Town by Jonathan Lorenz 2020-10-23T15:25:45Z

I really liked the graphical style, and it worked well with the gameplay and music. The controls felt a bit sluggish, which actually fit the mood quite well. It added some challenge and gave it a bit of a "trapped in a nightmare" mood. Making the controls slightly more responsive and/or adding some clearer visual feedback would still be good though I think.

It seemed to be possible to get the cultists to punch each other by manoeuvring around them carefully. Not sure whether or not this was intentional, but it added a nice tactical element to the game (and seemed to be the only way to make progress against larger groups). It might be interesting to build more elements like this into the gameplay.

Xyzlaball Loop by HomoLudens 2020-10-07T18:06:21Z

Really interesting idea for the mechanic, and good use of the theme. I found being able to move any of the objects whenever you like made it quite easy. I had fun though challenging myself to position everything so that the ball hit everything on two loops without me needing to make any adjustments.

Welcome To MILTON KEYNES by Lyje 2020-10-24T15:09:36Z

Having driven round Milton Keynes before, I can confirm this is an accurate representation of the experience.

I like the musical inspiration as well, and how the music and graphics gradually became more sinister and broken.

Great use of a one-button control scheme. Was quite fiddly to play at times, but the quick restart made it quite compulsive.

Hold "A" To Win! by 420blazeit 2020-10-10T17:08:08Z

Nice idea, and I really like the graphical style. Kind of like a GameBoy-esque Stanley Parable. A bit light on content right now but would be interested to see it developed further.

Re-Peter by Abdul Zakkar 2020-10-27T19:39:54Z

Really great mechanics and great use of the theme. The art style and sound are excellent too. I really love the background graphics.

Sketchy 'lectrics by Alan123 2020-10-10T17:17:10Z

Liked the concept and aesthetic. Simple controls are great, but a bit more feedback on your current speed would have been useful. I could see some numbers at the edges of the screen that might have been showing this, but something easier to read out of the corner of your eye, like a car speedometer, would be very useful, so you could get used to the top safe speed for different corners.

The Ribbon by Fax 2020-10-10T17:55:31Z

Brilliant game. A really innovative mechanic and excellent use of it in the varied level design. The last level was positively fiendish. The combination of puzzle and dexterity skills is excellent.

Would love to see this game developed further with more levels.

I think it would also be worth improving the feel of the controls and/or the feedback of the mechanics to the player. Hitboxes were extremely unforgiving and it was also quite easy to miss a jump without really understanding why. A bit of leeway in the controls would improve the feel a lot. Or if you do want to make it challenging by requiring precision, make it really clear to the player what they need to do. I couldn't tell tell why some jumps worked and others didn't. I also only once (by accident) killed one of the moving squares by jumping on it. Every other time I tried, I just died and I'm not sure why. I ended up just avoiding them.

Only giving so much feedback because I think it's an excellent game. Getting challenging precision game mechanics to feel good to the player takes a lot of time, and I think you did a great job for the time you had.

Ouroboros by FlatKiwi 2020-10-24T11:37:38Z

Brilliant art style and really polished presentation. The audio and mood were great too, and the mechanics worked well. It was really brutal to play, but that seems right for this kind of game. I did find the controls slightly frustrating (the attack just being due left/right based on your character's facing, but the possession being unidirectional, was quite confusing and tricky to get the hang of). Being able to possess enemies with different abilities was very effective.

BagJam by Ryan Paton 2020-10-27T17:50:48Z

Great idea and execution. I liked how the later levels were balanced so it was just barely possible to keep track of everything and it could easily get out of hand. Only minor criticism is that I found the controls slightly awkward (seemed a bit fussy about how you were positioned for the push action to work). Overall a really nice game though.

Night Job by algodoogle 2020-10-09T14:47:59Z

Some really interesting ideas in here but it didn't seem to work for me... The first door showed me the help message, but didn't actually show any of the loop or code blocks in the GUI on the right. I moved the robot around the side of the building and was able to inspect a couple of other rooms: on showed me the code block loop puzzle but it wasn't very clear how it worked so I wasn't sure how to solve it. Another showed me the camera puzzle, which was a really neat idea and seemed more intuitive to solve. I loved Invisible Inc and would be interested to see this game developed further.

Co-Routine by MatchaFlavor 2020-10-27T17:57:54Z

There are some really great mechanics in here, and they combine together to form really interesting puzzles, but I did struggle to play the game. The camera angles seem quite strange (there seemed to be some degree of mouse control, but I'm not sure this made things better), and the "how to play" instructions were a lot to take in. A fixed and/or more zoomed out camera, and a series of levels introducing the mechanics one-by-one, could make this a really great game. Camera issues aside I did really like the art style.

Loops in pool by Recher 2020-10-23T15:55:50Z

Really intriguing game. It took me a little while to work out the mechanics (it seemed a little unintuitive how the water would propagate *through* the vines to the enclosed areas). After I got the hang of it though it was quite compelling to play. Once I got started, I never seemed to be in danger of running out of mana and not finishing. It seemed to be just a matter of hunting for the right tiles. It might be interesting to add one more twist to the mechanics (e.g. some fixed tiles that can't be swapped, or some intermediate points that the water has to reach) and/or rebalance the points a bit.

Definitely a game with a lot of potential. It would be great as a mobile game.

LooperJumper by kidbiti 2020-10-07T20:21:06Z

Fun game with very nice graphics. Simple controls with difficult timing are a nice mix. With some tweaking this could be a really addictive game loop.

Plague Friend's Deathly Journey by sakura_magika 2020-10-23T15:39:42Z

Delightful graphics and a nice interpretation of the theme. The use of the loop was very effective. I could see this being expanded on to create some really tricky puzzles. I also enjoyed the not-always-German butcher :)

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Fur Steam Ahead! by Kyrio 2022-04-09T15:41:52Z

Really love the art style and music. A few more hints about what you needed to do would be useful but it wasn't too hard to work out. I think just a few tweaks to the mechanics (some of the ideas suggested in other comments) could really help to make the gameplay feel more frantic in a way that matches the mood of the game.

You Will Fall by Yaen 2022-04-09T15:54:25Z

This is fiendishly difficult but definitely fun to play, and quite compelling (I kept wanting to try again). Audio and humour are great, and the simple graphics work well.

DATA OVERLOAD by PROJECTaroid 2022-04-09T15:27:08Z

Nice work on the music and overall mood. I like the classic arcade shooter feel. One thing I found a bit odd was how your rate of fire seemed to increase gradually at first and then suddenly get much quicker (although maybe it just felt like that but was actually a smooth exponential curve).

Towards the end it felt like you didn't have much control over what was happening (seemed to be more about moving back and forth as fast as possible rather than aiming). I suppose that's in keeping with the theme though!

Chrysopoeia by Matt Barnfield 2022-04-09T16:18:25Z

This is challenging but really fun to get to grips with. I love the art style and the in-game text.

The Final Word: A Microsoft Word Platform Game by leekanarchism 2022-04-09T16:41:41Z

OMG what have you done? I love the discrepancies between the written and spoken text :joy:

I found the jump button a little bit inconsistent (didn't seem to fire very well when I was moving right) but the level design was really well done. It was challenging but compelling to get through the whole level even before being chased by clippy!

Escaping Precedent by DecrementedPalindrome 2022-04-09T16:30:41Z

The controls to this are great! It feels really fluid. Took me quite a while to get a hang of the boosting mechanic but it was really fun once I did. The core mechanics feel really solid and it seems like the game would stay engaging just with a larger/longer map. I can imagine different shapes of wall would introduce interesting emergent challenges.

On Thin Ice by Nikl 2022-04-09T15:19:33Z

> For some weird reason, you are joined by a bunch of cows. Immediate high marks for humour.

I lasted 50.63 seconds, which seems reasonably good (the screen was pretty full of tracks by that point).

I really like the idea of a snake game not on a square grid. The controls were simple and well-judged (reasonably forgiving). I could imagine extending it into something that feels even more fluid and like skating. Could add a real element of skill by allowing you to vary speed, make tighter turns, and perhaps even attempt to jump over tracks.

RIITA by wobs 2022-04-09T17:10:00Z

Really lovely art style. I enjoyed this a lot although it started to get a little repetitive. Amazing work for one weekend though. I could see it being expanded into a really fun ongoing adventure.

Also: All Star :joy:

Pixel-Panic by IdeasPerSecond 2022-04-09T15:48:14Z

This is really fun. Very hard to do well but doesn't feel unfair when you lose (although the movement occasional felt slightly unintuitive). The mechanic is quite innovative and the graphics are simple but effective.

Delay Bedtime by Matt E 2022-04-09T16:47:55Z

Absolutely love the concept! This was really fun to play and I really felt like a mischevious child running around the house. Rewinding the clock or unleashing the guinea pig are especially entertaining.
