Overscoping happens! It's a good learning experience. I'm glad that you went ahead and submitted anyway; you've got the beginnings of something good here.

The music set a really good tone; I'm not sure what soundtrack I would expect for a game where a construction worker punches cultists, but now I can't think of any other one!

You mentioned that you're going to do some bug fixing; the two biggest things for me were the fact that the y-axis was inverted for me (might just be my brand of controller? I haven't had the issue with other jam games, though) and the music wasn't set to loop--it stopped playing while I was mid-punch on the third cultist.

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-06 07:14

@guardaro Thank you for your kind feedback! The axis is inverted for me too in the build (but not in the editor) and for the music, thank you for mentionning, I was so stressed by the time running short and the features I had to cut that I didn't even saw that problem. I will work on that today. Thanks again for commenting! Cheers!

Sadly I don't have a controller right now so I can't play your game. Is there another way to play it the music sounds very fitting to the the though. And I like the graphics! How did you make those? Is it 3D art? Of it made out of 2D images?

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-07 10:10

@wouters I will have a look at implementing keyboard controls. The graphics are not from me, they are assets from Polyperfect! (EDIT :Done, you can now play with a keyboard. WASD, O, P)

nodli 2020-10-07 19:51

The character animations / controls feel are a bit stiff. The background music is great to set the tone of the game and the visuals have a nice vintage touch. Not sure how much it fits the theme but it's a great start for a game.

flaterectomy 2020-10-10 16:54

Well chose an art assets, the game immediately comes across well. The gloomy music suits the game well.

Punching didn't really seem to respond how I would have liked it to. There's some lag there, and I ended up punching twice half the time.

I also feel that switching from running left to right (and vice versa) should turn the character entirely, and not slowly rotate them. There was a few times where I wanted to turn 180 and just ended up facing up or down instead because I let go too quick. But as I was fighting at the time, I was just swinging my fist in the wrong direction.

I also noticed I could punch through the fences and kill cultists on the other side.

But it's a solid base for what could be a bigger game!

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-10 17:04

@flaterectomy @nodli Thanks for your feedback. Totally agree on the responsivness of the character that could be improved.

Didn't found the bug about punching cultists trough the fences, so thanks for that.

quinn-patrick 2020-10-10 17:35

So, this game is pretty clearly unfinished and it has nothing to do with the theme, but what the heck, punching guys is fun. I laughed at the blood effect when you beat someone up. And the music is good. There just isn't much to do. Good job, though.

Really enjoyed it.. The atmosphere was great.. I think the punch animation was a bit too slow.. But thats my only critique.. Good job!

stellarbeargames 2020-10-10 17:38

Nice work putting those assets together to create a dark mood. Low-poly is the best. It was fun punching cultists and sometimes they punched each other, which was funny but probably a bug. Congrats and good luck on future scoping!

elemel 2020-10-10 17:43

Music really helped with the atmosphere. The barricades of stuff formed a good boundary of the play area, while also adding to the atmosphere. Combat was promising, liked how you needed to wait for the enemies to signal an attack and retreat out of range. Also liked that enemies could hurt each other. Attacks could have been more varied, there could be blocks or counters, etc. Missed a theme interpretation.

onkel-mo 2020-10-10 17:44

I liked the general atmosphere of the game - the music certainly helped creating the mood. Made me hope for a longer game with another level, more enemies and maybe weapons or so.

The enemies bleeding to death after I punched them was a bit strange. Mayber the character would have needed a knife or something.

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-10 17:45

@stellarbeargames @spawncampgames @quinn-patrick Thank you for taking the time to play and comment guys! The cultists punching each other was a bug but I found it funny so I left it :)

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-10 17:50

@elemel Thank you for commenting! Didn't had enough time to put the loop related mechanics unfortunately. I think I had too much fun and took too much time creating the level :)

@onkel-mo Thank you for commenting! I imagine the punch just knock off the enemies, but when they fall, they actually hit their heads to the ground and bleed to death ^^

morcado 2020-10-10 17:56

I enjoyd the game, sounds are nice and style too. I notice you can spend all your money on a door even if its open, and sometimes player has too much cooldown when attacking

shambles 2020-10-10 18:09

I really like the models, they are simple but cute! as other people mentioned I also think the music was quite good and setup the scene nicely

virtual-turtle-studio 2020-10-11 07:32

It's a short little game and not too hard. It's pretty alright in the fun department, but I think it'd be a lot more fun already if the combat was a lot more skill-based. What I mean by that is that there is more of a emphasize on quick reactions etc. Right now it's really hard to hit someone, because the character stops moving altogether and the animation has to 'charge up' before it 'hits' someone. You could definitely make that animation way quicker, and keep the character walking, which would make the game a lot more fast paced. I like the mood you created here, it's nice and spooky, I'd love some more backstory of why these people try to kill me ;) The money mechanic is interesting, but you could also just say that if you kill all enemies you can open the gate, which would make more sense in my opinion. Anyway, good job on what you have. I know it's really hard to get animations right, so you did a good job!

edalbung 2020-10-11 12:28

Nice short game!

Here are my feedback:

_Positive points - Good graphics - Good music and SFXs - Gamepad support - Character's movement felt responsive

_Negative points - Imprecise combat system, not sure if I hit well the enemy - Input lag when hitting, sometimes I had a "ghost" attack input from my character whereas I didn't use the attack input

Overall: gg for your work!

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-12 16:00

@morcado @shambles @virtual-turtle-studio @edalbung Thanks for your feedback guys!

@morcado Thanks for the bug report!

@virtual-turtle-studio You are absolutely right. The money mechanic was supposed to be part of a more complex system, with waves of ennemies. But yes, in the current state of the game, it doesn't make sense.

sakura-magika 2020-10-23 00:02

i think the mood was set up well by the visuals and soundtrack. moving the character felt good, but the combat felt imprecise, repetitive, and i didn't feel like i had good feedback for when i hit an enemy. i didn't really feel caught in a loop, as much as trudging through doom, with just more and more enemies.

some kind of gameplay progression would have been nice, like stronger attacks to deal with the increasing number of enemies.

firetwin 2020-10-23 14:46

It's pretty amazing how you got a 3d game working so well in such little time. Congrats on that, very impressive! The combat worked and I didn't find any bugs at all! I was able to cheat a bit by opening the last door and just running past the enemies to the end, but that's hard to stop in most games!

The graphics were great and fit the genre of your game. The music and sounds enhanced the experience and fit in nicely too. It would have been nice to have weapon upgrades or a boss, but that would be really tough given the amount of time given. It was pleasant to be able to use a controller as well, which seems so rare in gamejam games. Nice one!

Overall, solid game!

hgcummings 2020-10-23 15:25

I really liked the graphical style, and it worked well with the gameplay and music. The controls felt a bit sluggish, which actually fit the mood quite well. It added some challenge and gave it a bit of a "trapped in a nightmare" mood. Making the controls slightly more responsive and/or adding some clearer visual feedback would still be good though I think.

It seemed to be possible to get the cultists to punch each other by manoeuvring around them carefully. Not sure whether or not this was intentional, but it added a nice tactical element to the game (and seemed to be the only way to make progress against larger groups). It might be interesting to build more elements like this into the gameplay.

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-23 20:34

@firetwin I cutted every corner I could to gain time. The camera movement is done with cinemachine, controls are handled by unity's new input system, 3d models are bought assets, animation are from mixamo applied to my models, sfxs are made by combining / mixing / eqing some preexisting sounds, I have already done movement relative to camera and attack /damage scripts for other jams so I had a look at those... I was hoping to have enough time to do more but in the end I didn't. Thanks for playing and commenting!

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-23 20:36

@hgcummings Glad you liked it! The cultists punching each other wasn't intentional but I find it funny so I left it. I liked how you call it a "tactical element" :) Thanks for playing and commenting!

doot 2020-10-24 14:27

Too bad you couldn't do all you thought about, but one thing is really great: you managed to deliver a complete game even if you cut a lot of things!

Playing with controller feels ok. There is a really strange buffer window on the punch action. Nice visual assets choices, nice music and nice sounds!

Thanks for the game!

jonathan-lorenz 2020-10-24 19:14

@doot Thank you for your encouraging words! And thank you for playing! Cheers!
