LD24 — Evolution

Darwin's Booby Snatch by Wampus 2012-09-01T01:50:00

Pretty fun game :) I like the graphics a lot and the interpretation of the theme is... well, bizarre, which is a good thing! I love the exploration aspect (it's one of the things I look for in games) but I found the limited actions a bit disappointing. Controls are a bit clunky. Sometimes a trap was placed with the pointer not even close to the button, but sure why.

Oneway by azurenimbus 2012-09-04T19:48:00

Very interesting concept, I like it! At first I didn't know what was going on though. It took me a couple of tries to figure out the game mechanics. Graphics and sounds are simple but very polished. It did left me wanting for more. Nice job!

Ancient Ruins by CappaGames 2012-09-01T15:57:00

This is very good! It was fun to play even though I'm not a fan of the bullet hell genre. Difficulty was fair. It's only missing some sound effects.

Pincers by ggiraldez 2012-08-28T20:07:00

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys! This is my second LD, but the first one I actually finish. At some point in the next few days I'll try to write a post-mortem.

@Frozen Fractal: better AI fell out of the time budget, as well as a proper skill system that makes use of energy. But I'll definitely continue to work on this.

@thewiseguy99: I had a great time making it. Thanks for playing.

@SecondDimension: funny, I haven't played Spore :) Will have to check it out.

@Andy Go: flOw was my starting point. Then I added variation from the three types of body parts. The progression system is not immediately clear though and I should have added some kind of tutorial.

Revolution by BrothersT 2012-09-02T04:59:00

Fantastic and very addictive! Graphics and sound are superb. Perhaps it's missing some sort of indication of the wheel's rotation.

Ameeba's by Vurb 2012-08-28T03:42:00

Concept is interesting but the bugs ruin all the fun. Graphics and audio are OK.

FLOWERBOT by Zccc 2012-09-01T16:51:00

I love this! Graphics are awesome, story is nice, gameplay is excellent. It's incredible for 48 hours. I only a small complain. The big fans killed me, but I thought they were background. They are not visible enough.

Mutate Now! by goerp 2012-09-02T00:15:00

There's not much in the form of gameplay, but the graphics are very good and I love the sense of humor. Good job!

OS: Evolution by zatyka 2012-09-04T22:21:00

I got to level 4 and then frustration got the best of me :) Controls require very precise coordination, which I apparently lack. It was fun though. Dialogs get a bit distracting after a while.

DrinkMilk by Ditto 2012-08-28T22:05:00

This is awesome! One of the best I've played so far. Great graphics and audio.

I made something similar (yet different :). But I envy your visual style and level of polish. Looks fantastic!

Mutate by JPatrick 2012-08-28T04:04:00

Instructions are misleading! :) I couldn't get it to shoot with the spacebar. Clicking works though. Tile movement is weird. But the high jumping and gliding makes it fun.

Lolicopocalypse by quasist 2012-08-28T02:48:00

This is so weird! Music is awesome and contributes a lot to the oppressive atmosphere. I didn't understand what was going on until it was too late...

Evolution Heroes by Rubel 2012-09-03T00:06:00

Very nicely done! Good graphics and sound (music gets a bit annoying after a while though). The game screen is a bit small, making it difficult to see and control the character with precision in a high res monitor.

Evoquarium by EnigmaBlade 2012-09-01T02:25:00

Excellent game! (I may be biased though, because it has a lot in common with the one I made ;) I like the general mood of the game: simple graphics, desaturated colors, soft background music. Sound effects are a reminder of what the game is all about. I found it a bit too hard to aim, though that's no problem once/if you evolve and increase the fire rate of your weapon.

My only complain is that at some point I couldn't find any more enemies to shoot at. Is there a limited quantity or do they respawn?

Paprika Blue by ekunminnowbash 2012-09-01T14:33:00

Awesome graphics, awesome music. Controls are solid. It's only missing some more levels ;)

Darwin's Turtle Race Challenge by endermath 2012-09-01T03:02:00

This is awesome! It's really simple, yet very addictive. Great job!

Death Cell by fohx 2012-08-29T20:50:00

The nerd inside me approves of this :) Nicely done!

It's evolution, baby by Ithildin 2012-09-01T03:28:00

Nice idea, but I honestly was never sure of what was going on. It feels like you're mostly an observer. There are few interactions possible and it's not immediately obvious what they do or even if they do it (ie. no appreciable feedback).

Another thing is that at evolving time, some creatures would disappear. I don't understand why. Is that intentional?

Inu No Ongaeshi by Shmarah 2012-08-28T03:26:00

Nice story. Got the bad end #2 but I enjoyed it.

Good Morning World! by Viridi04 2012-09-01T02:05:00

Excellent graphics! I found the plot amusing. It's missing a way to skip all the story and go straight to the game. It's annoying to go through it all just to get to play the second time. Btw, minor nitpick, but I'd change the initial message from "Click to start" to "Enter to start", since clicking doesn't work from then on.

Lack of sound was a bit disappointing. I also got a crash when deploying bombs.

The Silver Spire by charliecarlo 2012-08-29T00:28:00

Very well done! I especially like the atmosphere. The eye in the background is very unsettling.

This Planet is Mine by Perfoon 2012-09-01T01:32:00

Very nice game. As others have said, the game is a bit slow in the first levels (and quite frankly, I don't think you need a tutorial) and the difficulty ramps up too steeply in the second level you get bunny disease (I was able to eradicate it the first time). It spreads too quickly and I found medicine to be completely ineffective.

In any case, this looks amazing. Great job!

Primordial Guard by CogComp 2012-08-29T22:05:00

Interesting! I would have called it "Cell Herder" though ;)

Feesh. by Teejay5 2012-08-29T23:45:00

Indeed we had similar ideas! This looks beautiful, I love the visual style. Add some subtle sounds and soft ambient music and you have an awesome little game. My only complain would be that it took me a bit to realize how the controls worked, mostly for the lack of (initial) background feedback.

blob by pknowles 2012-08-30T18:01:00

The game starts, but I can barely play. Depending on the starting configuration, blue reproduces too fast and eats all the food, or kills me in less than 1 second. Also, even if there's food and some of my blobs around, when blue reaches a certain level the game tells me I've lost. Alert popup for that is very annoying too btw. Anyway, the concept is interesting, but in its current state is no fun at all.

Maple by zazery 2012-09-01T03:13:00

This has great potential. I like the control binding and the whole circuits idea. I got a bit lost while editing though. At some point I didn't know how to exit edit mode. Sound is very very good.

The Tower with Traps in it by Moops 2012-09-02T03:03:00

This is very good! Nice graphics, nice sounds, good story, balanced gameplay and responsive controls. Great job, I enjoyed it!

ProtoZoo by raver1975 2012-08-28T22:19:00

Interesting concept. I like the way you "infect" the plants. Controlling the ship is a bit too hard IMHO. I'd end up using the arrow keys almost exclusively.

I also got some weird bug in which the ship disappears but somehow I gain control of a bubble. Only it moves extremely fast. I played version 1.1.

Darwin Skirmish by panzermancer 2012-09-04T23:07:00

Absolutely fantastic! I got completely hooked up to this one, very addictive. Congratulations! My only complain is that the click radius for a unit is small making it difficult to quickly select one in the heat of the battle.

Life Forms by galman 2012-09-02T16:46:00

I really enjoyed playing this. It's a zen-like experience, very relaxing. Music is awesome. Front parallax is a bit confusing though. It feels like you should be moving faster than you actually are.

Lenimentus by firehand94 2012-08-28T02:35:00

Well, I still suck at shooters :) I like the background music. Fits nicely with the overall retro-style.

Tech Up by Smitty333 2012-08-28T02:16:00

Very interesting idea! Took me a couple of tries to figure out what was going on. Different winning combos allow for replay-ability. Graphics are nice, though the font took some time getting used to.

The UI/usability could use some work. The tech grid area is a bit small in the sense that you can't see more than 3 skills most of the time and the dragging distracts you from what's happening in other parts of the screen.

Wormelution by cappelnord 2012-09-04T19:36:00

(I come from your comment in my game) This is great! Love the graphics, sounds and background music. The flirting/mating idea is very interesting. I didn't like the controls much, but my opinion is obviously biased ;)

Biods by daydalus 2012-08-29T03:07:00

UI is confusing. Sometimes the mutate button wouldn't work (don't know if that was intended or not). Also, there's a point when you lose control of the situation completely, due to the exponential reproduction rate. It seems to me that whatever you do the first couple of seconds determines the final outcome.

It's a good simulation engine and fits the theme very well, but for a game, you're not supposed to take control away from the player ;)

Robot Panic by Oliver Simon 2012-09-01T05:00:00

It's missing some polish, but it's good. I like the graphics a lot. Music is too soothing and after a couple of loops it gets a bit tiring. Physics bugs are annoying, especially since you're already expected to die by game design, but I do understand it's hard to get right.

Cytosine by Frozen Fractal 2012-08-29T00:33:00

One of my favorites so far. Excellent!

Super Charles Darwin by gnx 2012-09-01T04:20:00

I came from your postmortem to experience frustration first hand :) This is very good and addictive, but hard. I'm afraid I no longer have the patience to just keep trying. It's a curse from modern gaming (IMHO, and I grew up with a C64). Most games are more forgiving now through checkpoints, saves, etc. so when presented with a real challenge we tend to give up more easily.

In any case, props to you for keeping me trying more than the average. Great job!

Flitter-Flatter by aeveis 2012-09-02T15:54:00

I had a lot of fun with this. Graphics are excellent. It takes a bit getting used to the controls. My only complain is that the background music gets tiring after a while.
