This is so amazing! I love the Art and the Theme, Bloody Violent Unicorn Things? YES PLEASE! :D <3

brotherbyto 2020-04-20 15:11

Really nice and polished game.

Art, music, sound effects, controls, everything is great.

kaleido 2020-04-20 16:40

Well done! This is great artwork, music, sound effects, etc. Great entry. Nothing critical to say!

criggles 2020-04-20 16:43

Amazing art & polish! Plays very nicely.

adfre12yu 2020-04-20 16:43

Really fun game! The graphics are amazing! It fits the theme really well too!

stefanie-leitch 2020-04-20 16:44

Wow, super well polished. Visually the best game I've seen so far. Only critiques are that the sound is a bit loud compared to the music, and I just wish there was some ending to give you closure and a feeling that you saved that cute little creature! Loved it!

seothen 2020-04-20 16:45

It's not my kind of game and I still had fun; so that says something right there. The only tweaks I'd suggest would be damping the sound volume of the attack (too loud imo) and reducing the health of the tanky enemies; they could move a little faster, have less HP, and not require so much clickiness to kill, while maintaining the challenge.

belea 2020-04-20 16:45

Wow, that's a really beautiful game! Controls feels nice and it's fun to play. It also fits the theme perfectly. I really love the contrast between the cute unicorn and the creepy creatures.

You made a great work. It's awesome you could make it in just 48 hours. Congratulations

loig 2020-04-20 16:47

Wonderful graphics!

theconfusedcyborg 2020-04-20 16:47

Loved the sound effects! The controls were really good!

knason 2020-04-20 16:51

Super cute :-) Nice work with the sound effects, the mood was great! Good job!

norris-eldridge 2020-04-20 17:41

Love the art work! Your game looks great and yes, very similar concept to my game but your's is like if mine was taken to the next level :) I really like the idea of needing to monitor your furry friend's different needs and running out to collect specific items. Really great job on this one!

michaela-schanes 2020-04-20 17:55

Really awesome game! Super cute graphics, great idea and also a smooth feeling because it fits so well together!

honey-pony 2020-04-20 19:24

I like the combination of providing for the Unicore's needs while at the same time fending off the bad guys. I did feel like the spawn rates of the various resources might sometimes put you in a pretty tough spot--for example, no Mind resources spawned in for me until the Unicore's Mind bar was at half a heart. But I guess that does add a lot of dimension to the difficulty, so it's probably fine (as long as the game never makes it *impossible* to fill the bars).

Overall pretty good.

denglishdesign 2020-04-21 05:42

If this doesn't get top 10 I will be so freakin' shocked! Such amazing art and enemy variety! From a game design perspective this is balanced REEEEALLY nicely! The pacing of the enemies at the start vs how much time you had to get the food. In general the fact that you can strategically tank certain shots if you have the resources gathered to heal it back up! The way enemies target you if you get close enough, letting you kite them away from the unicore! It's just REALLY well designed and FELT fun to play! Great great job!! :D

If you maybe add some different kinds of ways to deal dmg to enemies, maybe a super chrged one hit kill shot on a decent cooldown, or sometimes instead of resources, a bomb will spawn that you can detonate for wide reaching damage, then I could EEEASILY see this selling really good on itch.io! :D

camilo-quintero 2020-04-21 06:18

Awesome game! Really like the art style, and the sound blends really good. It's a fun, well executed concept. Maybe it could be good to add a way to heal the player avatar. Nice job! :D

lawnchair-society 2020-04-21 11:45

Dear lord this was so cute!!!! Controls were super smooth and the pacing seems just right. Well done and well executed!

dsn 2020-04-21 17:38

I loved the graphics and the name of the game. Good job!

sanjuro 2020-04-21 18:21

I made a really similar game to yours, but mine lacks the quality of the graphics that you have put into it, ahahah. Anyway, I feel that the game would have been more challenging if there weren't pickups near the unicorn, so that you would have been forced to leave the main room once in a while. Also, it kinda lacks in player feedback when you hit an enemy. Great job anyway!

drschizzo 2020-04-21 18:27

Good top down shooter with a nice addition that perfectly fit the theme and the graphics are so lovely! well done!

bigtinygames 2020-04-21 18:32

Good job! It's realy nice game. I'd add health bars above enemies heads as you need to shoot them many times before they die and have no feedback from the game til they die.

wheffle 2020-04-21 18:42

Awesome graphics, sounds, and gameplay! I really like how you can stockpile resources and hand them out as needed. I had some issues knowing when enemies were getting close and where to defend, maybe some directional indicators or 2D audio could help with that, maybe a warning that a portal is activating. Cool fun game, played it for a while!

plantprogrammer 2020-04-21 20:04

I love these graphics. The whole tamagotchi meets tower defense mechanic seemed a bit random, but hey, it's a game. I didn't find out how to replenish my own health (except for respawning, which might be the only way). I second the suggestion of health bars on the enemies (or states of decay, if you want to spend even more time). It was super fun playing, and this is by the way my first 5* Graphics rating during this jam evaluation. The graphics are nice, clear and comprehensive, and the color design was cleverly put together to convey information about the effect on the unicore. Thank you for creating this experience <3

alex-davies 2020-04-21 20:05

Great game, with great balance. The graphics are lovely, and I love the contrast between the monsters and the unicorn.

#### My advice: 1. Add a sound queue, or explosion, or some kind of graphical change to signify an enemy dying. I always was a bit unsure of whether an enemy died, because they slowly fade out. 2. Add a fire rate limiter of some kind, or implement a system for holding down to shoot - It feels a bit weird when the best way to kill enemies is to walk into their face and spam the mouse as fast as possible. It's also just a nice quality of life change for lazy people like me who don't want to keep clicking.

sndr 2020-04-21 20:25

@sanjuro - I see what you mean. If I get some time to take this game further, I think that's going to be one of the points to address. Maybe a smarter item spawner would be nice. Thanks for dropping by!

@bigtinygames - Yes, they need a decay indicator of some sort. Good point. :muscle:

@wheffle - yes! Totally agree with you. Writing those down.

@plantprogrammer Thank you for the feedback! I wanted to add hearts around the map to replenish your health but unfortunately run out of time. Thanks for playing it and rating it!

@alex-davies That is actually super valuable advice. Thank you for spending the time to write that down! I'm adding it to my list!

sndr 2020-04-21 20:32

@honey-pony - You're totally right! I was actually worried that randomly spawning items would create that kind of situation. If I had a bit of extra time I would have definitely made the item spawner smarter. Thank you for playing it and adding your thoughts. Really appreciated!

@norris-eldridge - But you did yours in a lot less time AND I don't have a cool intro like you.

@denglishdesign - WOW. Really encouraging feedback. Thank you for spending the time to write that down. Means a lot.

fussenkuh 2020-04-21 21:32

Wow, you accomplished a heck of a lot in 48 hours! I love the graphics and sound (though, I wish the unicorn would have made some noises). The controls were tight and intuitive. Fantastic job!

acgaudette 2020-04-22 04:51

this is a great simple execution of the theme and the pacing of the wave combat/defend from all directions feels good. asset work is pretty solid! some juice would go a long way for you though in terms of feel. shooting feels very repetitive after awhile since there is essentially no reason not to shoot--a risk element there would work well, e.g. trying to avoid friendly fire or shooting the items. the tactile feel kind of reduces to clicking as fast as possible, which is a bit tiring since the game builds slowly. I might rebalance the enemies towards a greater number of lightweight mobs so that the player can feel as though they are accomplishing more. just my 2 cents--good work!

mhykah 2020-04-22 06:37

Fun game! Movement and shooting was really fun and I really enjoyed the sounds, art, and animation. Very cute! I thought having three resources to collect and maintain was an interesting idea, but honestly I ended up ignoring that and switching items because they didn't seem to make much of a difference to how I would play the game with one resource. I just collected everything and gave everything at once. The risk-reward of going out to collect items and staying close to protect gameplay was really cool! Great job!

sndr 2020-04-22 08:09

@acgaudette - Thanks a lot for your thoughts! You are right! Writing it down on my list.

@mhykah - Thank you for playing the game and spending the time to write that comment. Means a lot!

lalada 2020-04-22 09:18

So cute!! I liked the mechanism that bullets can counter the enemy's bullets .

zesix 2020-04-22 09:45

As others have mentioned, the art style is super cute! Very impressive for 48 hours!

ponypen 2020-04-22 12:50

Love the graphics, sounds and gameplay. It's super duper cute <3 If I were you the only change I would make to the gae is reducing the life down of the enemies and upping their speed, so they are still challenging but you don't have to clock like mad. But all in all I really enjoyed the game, well done for getting such a good game done so quickly! x

louiejams 2020-04-22 13:31

First of all, really dig the art, adorable! Feeding unicats tasty chicken and giving them old school gameboys to play for fun, whats not to love? I did however, have a few things to mention with the gameplay. When I first started, before i'd finished reading the controls, i was being attacked by zombie cacti: player health.PNG

Now there's a chance i'm just super slow at reading, but i feel like the game should be paused or this should be displayed on a screen beforehand. Once i got into the game, i noticed the difficulty increases, fast! So I really didn't last too long at all, every time i played. Since it's a compo game i recognise you don't have as much time for testing and balancing out things, but if you wanted to continue working on it, those would be the things i would first address.

Great achievement! Really well done :)

sndr 2020-04-22 13:38

@louiejams - Yep, totally right. I should've paused it but I have to admit controls were one of the last things I added and I had no time for more :see_no_evil: Sorry about that!

louiejams 2020-04-22 13:49

@sndr Hey no worries, as I said, very good job! I just wanted to leave something constructive for you to think about if you were planning on carrying on with it or to use in future projects :)

sndr 2020-04-22 15:59

@louiejams - And I love that you took the time to do that. Definitely added it on my list cause I'd love to keep working on this little fella. Thanks so much for playing it

100th-coin 2020-04-22 16:45

Oh woah that game was tough! Great job on the art, it's super adorable.

stu 2020-04-22 17:20

Fun, solid entry that's extremely playable and on theme! I really appreciate the fact that we had to collect 3 resource types though I would've loved to see them taken a little further. I think it'd be awesome to have the gameplay effected somehow based on which resources you are running low on? Just a thought. Still just having to locate the appropriate resource while shooting enemies was enough to make this more interesting then other entries I've seen. kudos!

valisse21 2020-04-22 19:50

That unicorn is totally adorable! The game is cool, full of fun, nice art and sounds, well balanced. I really enjoyed it.

super-hadoken 2020-04-22 22:01

Wow, great game. Excellent pixel art and smooth gameplay. You really achieved a lot in a short time.

kamekai 2020-04-23 02:30

Solid game! My first game ended with 275. I see myself coming back to try to do better. It started off deceptively easy and ramped up quick. The music and art are all solid. I like some of the design choices you made, like stretching sprites instead of animating them, the HUD is gorgeous. Most of the things I could think to add are simply a function of time available to you. Perhaps a powerup system with basic things like double shot, etc. Low-hanging fruit which takes little time to implement. Mines and turrets are another idea which help to increase strategic depth for late game. This game is definitely worth polishing off and adding to your portfolio!

sndr 2020-04-23 07:43

@kamekai - Love those ideas, so writing them down! I like mines and turrets a lot - definitely goes along with the core mechanic and would allow the player to further explore the room without risking the pet as much as before. Thanks for dropping by and writing down your thoughts. I really appreciate it!

peterfiftyfour 2020-04-23 09:55

This is sooo cute. I felt bad when it died :( Really nice idea! I agree with the idea of turrets and more static defences!

shess 2020-04-23 10:18

What the heck, how can a game be this adorable! Of course the art is gorgeous, but I especially appreciate narrative and stylistic integrity you managed to keep to the very end. Exciting, very replayable and enjoyable!

sciman101 2020-04-23 15:42

Fun and simple! Two great qualities for a jam game to have. I like how you need to manage resources for yourself and for the Unicore, and the visuals are all really nice and pleasant. If I had one suggestion, it would be to make the SFX a little less high-pitched, and add some more feedback for shooting. A little screen shake can go a long way.

flamus 2020-04-23 16:06

Amazing entry. So cute and so addictive gameplay! congrats!

hcursino 2020-04-23 16:11

Fun, simple and neat. The art style is amazing. I wish I could keep firing by holding the mouse button, or if there were any power ups to restore my hp or upgrade the weapon temporarily, kinda like the Journey of the Prairie King, but I understand that 48 hours is quite a tight period of time for so much implementation and testing. Amazing game nevertheless, good job.

sndr 2020-04-23 17:02

@sciman101 - totally agree with you. I've only noticed that after delivering... how did I not think about a screen shake? :face_palm:

polarcube 2020-04-23 18:34

I love the art and the music. But it took me 2 deaths before noticing that I was protecting the big unicorn in the center. It also took me a while to find the players hearts. Maybe I am just not very noticing but I think a bit of work could have been put into that.

kjscott 2020-04-23 20:22

I kinda skipped through the initial in game explanation of what all the controls were so I had to figure it out as I went along. Thankfully there was quite and polish you did on the game. It's a really cute game and very much enjoyed playing it. Hope you do well in the rankings!

lesslwo 2020-04-23 21:36

Solid game with cute art style. Nice enemy variety, but maybe a little pew-pew variety to accompany it would be even better. But oh well, time constraints, yadda-yadda. Good job!

tcicerodev 2020-04-24 20:06

Really Awesome! Beautiful graphics, and very polished! Only issue I had was that it was a little hard to aim without having a cursor.

lars-erik 2020-04-24 22:20

Really nice entry! Love the art, sound and theme. I'm higher than average involved in the Umbraco CMS community, and the current effort of rewriting it from .NET Framework to .NET Core is called Project Unicore. So this game holds special value to me. Close to my heart! 😁❤🌈🦄 Very nice entry!

gagapete 2020-04-25 00:14

That was unexpectedly good. Great graphics, good music, awesome gameplay.

emicb 2020-04-25 01:48

Amazing! Adorable graphics and extremely fun gameplay! Wonderful submission!

junebug 2020-04-25 05:08

I skipped reading some of the controls in the beginning and didn't realize you could swap the kind of item you were holding and needed to pick one of them up in order to feed the unicorn. I actually thought that was kind of a cool limitation and it made finding items at the right time more important. My mistakes aside, this was well done! The art style was cute and it felt pretty polished. With a few more features, this wouldn't have been out of place on one of the free flash game sites back in the day. Great job on the visuals, the unicorn was super cute! Hope to see another project from you this fall!

nathant 2020-04-25 08:38

Smooth art style. Interesting use of the theme. Lots to do but easy to pick up and play. Good hit detection and fluid controls. I wanted to interact with the hand at the beginning, but quickly forgot about it other than swapping items. Excellent compo!

adriankrawczyk 2020-04-25 08:40

beatiful game!

marbles 2020-04-25 10:44

Beautiful pixel art. I love the projectile hit effect! I also like that you incorporated different elements to keep the Unicore alive because health alone is too common.

gamechoy 2020-04-25 13:34

Graphics look great and I like the number of enemies you have, good work!

narudgi 2020-04-25 16:31

Neat game! Simple but effective and fun, well done :>

ancientpears 2020-04-25 16:57

You did really amazing job. I liked your artwork and design. How you color matched each category with matching items. How did you do all this in 48 hours? Great job!

kaafirookie 2020-04-25 18:53

Hey! Played your game, Here's a bit of feedback: https://youtu.be/enn-76VtPn8?t=1112

2020-04-25 19:18

Pretty cool graphics and audio. The game play was simple, but hard to understand. The unicorn looked more like a fat cat(Just my opinion). Good job, and keep it up!

sndr 2020-04-25 21:07

@kaafirookie - Thank you so very much for your super detailed feedback. I have been taking a lot of notes as I watched the stream, everything you've mentioned has been very valuable and I truly appreciate you taking the time to talk through your thoughts, feels and criticisms. I can't thank you enough for putting time into it.

kaafirookie 2020-04-25 22:23

@sndr Glad that I could be of help! All the best for your future endeavors!

fabula-rasa 2020-04-26 10:47

Enemies were tougher than I fist expected and my first unicorn died in paaaain. But I was a better caretaker to the second one and all went much better :)

Nice graphics and pleasant gameplay. I didn't experience any issues really. So: a great jam job!

rewzu 2020-04-26 11:29

Great art style, audio fits it nicely, simple gameplay and fun. Nice entry!

wongkongphooey 2020-04-26 20:20

Great entry! Reminds me a bit of Enter The Gungeon, you managed to get a lot of polish on there in the timeframe. Well done!

finnthepirate 2020-04-26 20:45

really really nice, love the artwork and the music, lovely pixel art good job

vex 2020-04-27 07:35

Great art, I wish there'd be a better indication of where the next wave is spawning from though - or maybe there is but I couldn't find it.

johnnysix 2020-04-27 21:25

Very cool, really loved the art and the animations.

I never got the chance to do a respawn as my unicore died too quick. If there was potential to level up the Unicore / Player, that'd be good. Once the 3rd/4th wave hit with the muliple bullet enemies, it's hard to keep up.

attala 2020-04-28 15:04

Nice gameplay but too difficult for me :) Love the art style and the music.

neontropics 2020-04-30 23:29

Nice twin stick shooter! The graphics are pretty great.

It would be cool with a nice explosion when killing enemies - as it is they just kinda fade out which is not as satisfying. It's also pretty hard, and I'm more of a fan of "faster enemies with less health", but that might just be personal preference.

elio 2020-05-06 14:56

Great game, the art is oustanding and the gameplay is super smooth, great job :D

matootsy 2020-05-07 05:07

My scroll wheel is broken now ^^ Yes I know theses cases are rare, but It would be nice to have other keys to switch between the items. Despite this problem that block me to enjoy the gameplay, I can feel the mood of these game and it's a pretty good top down shooter. Movements are very smooth. The level design is efficient, and the pixel art is awesome. The sound too, but perhaps sound of shoot to high. Anyway. Congratulation to the team. It is a very well polished game for a Jam!

hgcummings 2020-05-07 14:43

Great graphics and mood! Fun gameplay too; and a nice level of challenge.

Not sure whether the item spawns were entirely random or not, but food seemed a bit low on all of my playthroughs... my Unicore eventually died of low health each time, but if I'd been a bit more competent at fighting off enemies I think it might have died of low food, despite me picking up every single piece of food that spawned, which would have been a bit frustrating.

zebraatomica 2020-05-08 21:40

This game is so polished i don't even want you to compare yours to mine hahahah You've did such a great job and now i'm even ashamed of my team's work hahahah Really nice game indeed! Would only do a hold mouse1 to shoot for accessibilityunicorn spin.gif and like other people said, another button to change items.

629 Highscore... really wanted that 666... XD
