I loved the retro graphics of this game. Although the camera is a bit too low in my opinion and some sound would have helped to make the game more interesting, I found it fun either way. Good work.

Its a nice retro feel but the map was to small and some audio would have helped a lot. Still great job :-)!
Indeed, this is a good game. I'm terrible at racing games, as this demonstrated, so congratulations at making a not terrible AI to beat me. :smiley_cat:
I found the collision boxes on the inside of the track to be a bit invasive. I was trying to hug the center but was hitting invisible walls which was kind of annoying.
But otherwise, I think you made a solid game with simple but effective mechanics. Good job.
I kept having an issue where I would stop dead in my tracks when rounding a corner, though my car was nowhere near the wall. Perhaps a collision box is too big? Other than that, this was fun, though the lowered top speed for lower energy wasn't as clear at the start. Still, I knew what you wanted me to do right away. It looked good!
Very cool artstyle. The gameplay reminded me of F-Zero, although I have to agree that the camera could be a bit higher.
The car feels pretty smooth, but the boundaries are not 100% clear. I didn't quite understand where I was going at first because the perspective was weird. Also when I tried driving close to the inner lane I got stuck on seemingly nothing pretty often.
It's really cool though that you tried something different here and it works pretty well other than that. Good work.
I like the retro look. I kept hitting an invisible wall near the middle of the track. The camera could be placed higher or in front of the car. Good job!
The graphics were great and the game was a lot of fun. I did think the collision boxes were way too large. I was getting stuck on trees when I don't think I should have been. Coming to a full stop when you clip a tree was jarring. I think bouncing off and getting slowed(maybe losing a lot of power) would have made colliding feel more natural.
The whole time I was racing, I never once saw the other racers, and I didn't really get any clear indication that I was losing until I lost... I assume it was coincidence that I lost at the same time as hitting a wall, and that the lose condition was that someone else finished the 5 laps? I didn't hit anything until the end and still lost, so maybe the difficulty was a little high. There also wasn't any sort of start / restart button, which would have been nice.
Besides that, it's a pretty solid base to a racing game, the controls were pretty responsive and the pickups worked nicely.
Man you guys are fast. I just sit down after getting home from work to start playing/reviewing some games and already you guys are pouring in with reviews and solid feedback. Thank you everyone who has taken the time to play my game so far! This is still really new to me having others play my games, so your comments are truly invaluable.
To @almostcthulhu and @pixel-programmer: I need to figure out how sound effects and music fit into my development cycle. At the moment since I'm working solo and I'm writing all the engine code from scratch, I'm not certain yet how I want to start bringing sound into the mix.
To @thepelranthean, @incobalt, @zelos, @milano23, and @benbennett: You are absolutely right about crude collisions. The walls are basically just solid cubes that if you hit, you completely stop. Really not ideal for a fast raced racing game :/.
To @doomshmuck: You are very right about not enough indicators of direction or progress. If at any time you were to lose track of perspective from the starting direction, you would have no idea of which way you should be going. Some directional markers probably would have done tons to help out with this problem.
Good job. Your game is good so far and you should be proud of yourself for making it within the 48 hour time frame. I liked the graphics and the controls were pretty good as well (Although, adding WASD keys would be nice). One thing that could be improved is the collision detection with the boundaries since if you collide with them at any angle, you are brought to a complete stop. What you might want to consider is making it possible to slide along the boundary so that if you accidentally clip it when going around a corner, you don't have to turn around to start moving again. Overall, this a great game so far and I am curious to see what you do with it in the future!
Super fun, I really like the graphics too. Really good job on making this over the weekend, some of the corners were a bit rough to get around, but overall it was great zooming around haha :P
Only critique is what @obidubi said about sliding along the bondary. It felt unresponsive and it broke my flow, in an otherwise *very* fun racer. I loved having to get the solar powerups in order to win. Also some landmarks to help me memorize where I am at each given lap.
All in all, lovely work, especially with the time constraint
Really fun little adventure racer. Nice retro look (it reminds me some of the C64 games), the only thing that could be better is camera, I think it should be leveled up a little bit. Very unique idea, have not seen a game like this on Ludum Dare before. Great Job!
Overall not bad at all, although had some issues with the camera being too low and those collision boxes seemed a bit off. But it was fun and great little time waster. Well done enjoyable little game! :D
Improve collisions and camera and the game is good to go :) I like the graphics :)
I haven't played this style game in a long time! Loved the retro feel and felt it was very innovative.
Sorry cannot play your game (windows 10 64 bit)
@MarkWolf: You are the first person to notify me of technical difficulties. Could you provide any details on what you are noticing when things fail? I'd be very interested to hear whatever details you can tell me on the topic so that I can look for a fix.
I've tried the game on my own Windows 10 64bit system, so I don't think that general trait causes the issue.
The perspective being too low results in not being able to see the powerup in front of you. Really needs some sound FX to make it come to life. The collision with the track railing seems a bit iffy too, as I'd stop dead in the middle of the road as there's apparently something that's colliding. I like the aesthetic though, and looks like a custom engine of sorts, so great job on that!
