LD38 — A Small World

liftoff by Remco 2017-04-28T01:36:30Z

Seems like a cool little sales game. I found it cute how no matter how horribly I landed, the tiny ship just always straightened itself out :3

A minor suggestion, it might be cool to have config file or simple menu for changing volumes of fx and music levels. At least on my computer the fx sounded 10x louder then the music, so I couldn't hear it very well.

Cowmets by NickZangus 2017-05-06T21:25:37Z

Just tried playing the game through the gamejolt site on my Ubuntu laptop and it kept crashing my browser. Not sure if it is my setup, the site, or the game. Just figured I would mention it encase other Linux gamers notice the same behavior.

Until Tomorrow by MSiddeek 2017-05-03T04:03:04Z

Although I though the beginning was a bit unguided, the simple humor kept me going until a path showed itself.

Glad I was able to get the whole way through. I honestly didn't know what to expect with each next room. Quite an interesting and one-of-a-kind experience for me. Great job!

Id's Journey by red-fan-games 2017-04-26T01:59:34Z

Just gave it a try on my Ubuntu laptop, and it works just fine!

That combo of the sharper textures and the high contrast lighting is pretty cool. Reminded me a bit of some of the early 3d renderers of the late 90s. Great job on those visuals!

Don't Make Me Stop This Car! by UncleChris 2017-05-04T21:58:08Z

Certainly not an easy game. I had to retry a handful of times before making it to the finish line. Personally I struggled a bit with the bounding boxes of the cars.

Great start though! The game wouldn't be right with a station wagon :)

not on my pizza by wareification 2017-04-29T15:33:55Z

Thanks for giving it a try and the kind words!

I was afraid the multi-player requirement would prevent players from trying it. Certainly a good take away I had from the project

I completely agree with the sound improving with feedback. I'll need to make it a higher priority in future jams to try and get sound effects involved sooner.

That is an interesting issue caused by the mouse lock that the game currently does. It was originally added for FPS games, but it doesn't make any sense for a game like this. That is a good suggestion, I'll look into making it configurable.

I really appreciate you and your sisters feedback. Thank you!

Ooh sorry, since it is a shared keyboard game the controls really aren't intuitive. They are mentioned in the readme I think if you are still interested in giving it a try.

LD39 — Running out of Power

Yet Another Exhausted Day by Gao Ming 2017-08-02T02:33:38Z

So glad I saw your recent blog post, pulling me in to check this out.

Obviously very out of the box interruption of the theme, but most importantly the animations really struck a chord with my sense of humor. Great job on this one, really!

Blood Mechs: The Iron Eucharist by nuclearfriend 2017-08-04T01:38:55Z

Excellent! I haven't played a mech game for a long time. This was an interesting reminder.

I've got to agree with the others that the controls did feel a bit unnatural at first. I don't know if it's because of the mouse sensitivity or what, but it wasn't until the last few rounds before I realized how to properly orient myself.

The amount of game content and pure presentation is unbelievable for a jam event though. That audio dub was priceless!

Running Voltgun by sinclairstrange 2017-08-01T23:22:00Z

Love the cute graphics! The audio is also a perfect fit for this visuals .

Defend Home: Mars by sgt3v 2017-08-02T00:43:15Z

Congrats on the first solo AND first FPS! Very impressive.

Only issue I ran into was running out of ammo and not having any option other than running around the map looking for fragments of ammo. A melee option or a sidearm would have been more ideal, but it still worked out :P.

Turn the Lights Off! by obidubi 2017-08-02T03:03:34Z

Gameplay wise, I would have loved the ability to scorn or slap someone if they are caught red handed leaving a light on. Something to slow their progression to the next room to make the same mistake.

It probably would have also been quite nice to highlight on the radar which of the rooms are on around the ship. Even better if it showed the drain weight of each room.

A very well rounded game. Great job on this one!

Everust by boaheck-artgent 2017-08-04T02:02:05Z

I'm so glad I was able to finally find the project page for this game! I saw development snapshots of it during the jam but I wasn't haven't having any luck finding the page after the event ended.

The visuals really turned out great on this project. It was even more impressive trying them out in real time myself. I've got to completely agree with everyones comments about atmosphere on this one.

On a side note the controls did feel a bit sticky. Some times space press then hold was needed to fly. Some times just the hold. It made it a bit frustrating after falling into the dooming water several times due to the inconsistencies.

Still a fantastic entry! I can't wait to see what you cook up next.

Power Grid Manager by cudabear 2017-08-02T02:03:03Z

Great job on the UI/UX feedback in the game. There were countless times when I was rescued by the warning sound effect and the flashing cell. Was able to make it way past my stay because of these hints!

Man you guys are fast. I just sit down after getting home from work to start playing/reviewing some games and already you guys are pouring in with reviews and solid feedback. Thank you everyone who has taken the time to play my game so far! This is still really new to me having others play my games, so your comments are truly invaluable.

To @almostcthulhu and @pixel-programmer: I need to figure out how sound effects and music fit into my development cycle. At the moment since I'm working solo and I'm writing all the engine code from scratch, I'm not certain yet how I want to start bringing sound into the mix.

To @thepelranthean, @incobalt, @zelos, @milano23, and @benbennett: You are absolutely right about crude collisions. The walls are basically just solid cubes that if you hit, you completely stop. Really not ideal for a fast raced racing game :/.

To @doomshmuck: You are very right about not enough indicators of direction or progress. If at any time you were to lose track of perspective from the starting direction, you would have no idea of which way you should be going. Some directional markers probably would have done tons to help out with this problem.

solar avenue by wareification 2017-08-06T04:48:07Z

@MarkWolf: You are the first person to notify me of technical difficulties. Could you provide any details on what you are noticing when things fail? I'd be very interested to hear whatever details you can tell me on the topic so that I can look for a fix.

I've tried the game on my own Windows 10 64bit system, so I don't think that general trait causes the issue.

Battery-Powered Business by AlmostCthulhu 2017-08-02T00:18:52Z

720$!

I don't think I fully understood the strategy behind the macro level stuff with plotting buildings, but I did like the pipe minigame! Although I failed the first time, I quickly got the hang of it.

Not sure why, but I enjoy the song playing in the background too. Something about high synth during the second part of the song that caught my attention.

Game Rover by bruins 2017-08-01T23:43:14Z

A few weird issues in that WebGL on Linux, like accelerated jumps up walls or randomly dieing, but luckily they weren't super consistent.

Nice job on the distinctive visuals!

Runnerbot LD39Entry by Pixel Game Wizard 2017-08-03T03:17:33Z

Was able to make it to 31490 on a second try. Very intuitive gameplay and visuals! Everything just basically worked naturally together.

Kinesis - 3D Flight Obstacle Course by TomPendergrass 2017-08-02T02:20:13Z

-42m, yay! I did manage to do better on another try :P.

The biggest recommendation I would make would be some smoother way of fixing the camera wrap that it seems to be doing at -180 and 180 degrees vertically. I found myself loosing control and perspective by my ship suddenly flipping orientation.

Pixel Driver by CG_Fred 2017-08-03T03:49:58Z

Very nice to the point lead into the game just quickly showing off the important things to know. Combine that with global highscore and minimal time to retry and you've got a game that is very easy to get into and stay addicted. Very well done!

Voiid by Ace17 2017-12-12T04:23:31Z

Congrats on the successful game built from your custom engine. A little rough around the edges like with what you've noted with the collision response, but nothing major.

The graphics really worked for me though. Reminded me of my early days of 3D in GM6. I look forward to the other games that will come out of your engine!

Poser by PeachTreeOath 2017-12-06T04:02:48Z

Got to hold a furries hand for points. +1

Love that skater melody! Great job on the project!

Hold Out by wareification 2017-12-06T03:14:04Z

@siege: I appreciate that some developers might want to try and stay a bit closer to the original source material (regulation shapes, arena size, ect.), but I wasn't too interested in doing that for this project. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'm sure it would have led to some more balanced/anticipated gameplay.

Hold Out by wareification 2017-12-06T03:21:32Z

@marekkpie: My intent was that the hold mechanic would make things riskier for the player since locking rows leave less space for the player to move around in. But outside of that, there really is no greater reason to not try and hold for ever row.

Hold Out by wareification 2017-12-06T03:30:37Z

@doc-ill: I'd bet in the 30 years someone probably has done something similar. Sometime I need to work up the nerve to try adding some custom audio, but I definitely cut things pretty close on time for this one. Maybe next time!

Hold Out by wareification 2017-12-07T04:22:05Z

@tiberiusuciu: Yeah, the original game naturally fits the theme pretty well, so it was a bit of an easy out choosing it as the basis. However since I've been writing all my games from scratch in a custom engine I kinda needed the crutch just to finish something by the deadline. Burning the first night of the jam on dead end ideas doesn't help much in that department either :).

Hold Out by wareification 2017-12-07T20:30:44Z

You nailed it @dillon! Each of the recommendations you gave would certainly have left the player with smoother experience. The only one I didn't have in the back of my mind (in some spirit) writing the game would have been the ghost image suggestion. The rest were left out due to time constraints. I was convinced of the first one pretty quickly after all the racket I was making on my mechanical keyboard playtesting.

Thanks for the fantastic feedback!

Soup's On! by marekkpie 2017-12-07T03:51:24Z

The gameplay and theme reminded me a lot of a Mario Party or Pokemon Stadium minigame.

Like many others, I was quite glad to have the tutorial on this one. Not because the game was difficult to understand, but just so that I could jump into doing the main game right instead of failing a lot first.

Only suggestion I can really make might be to add a little bit more variation. Once I had the timing down, and a strategy for ordering, it was pretty hard to make a mistake. Having different recipes that have unique decreasing velocities for the ingredients would help prevent players from getting TOO comfortable. But thats all just magic extras, nothing needed for such a tight deadline!

Best score I could get: 211.95.

Marty the Hatted by PyrotheFlamy 2017-12-06T02:40:58Z

I think this is the first game I've ever played that has used a billboard describing the game's controls as the primary particle effect. Not sure if that was intended or not, that is what I'm seeing on Windows. In fact it's kinda ingenious because no one can really complain that they don't understand the controls when that is on the screen all the time :P.

Sugarplum Summit by Michael Clavell 2017-12-07T03:29:45Z

Man, is it just me or is that game really difficult for being so cute? With the fact that so many things home after you (including gingerbread corpses), I found myself getting corned a lot. I quite OK with the difficulty, just curious if anyone else felt similarly :3.

Claustrophobia by Fecalmancer 2017-12-07T04:11:15Z

Gotta love the fast food aesthetic.

My best score: 5100.
