As cool as the premise to this game sounds, I couldn't get past the calibration stage because it didn't get any input from my mic (even though I enabled mic input in firefox and my mic itself works). Really sad, I wish this worked for me!

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 15:44

@yaen firefox is usually all sorts of weird with User Media. Chrome is recommended. Thanks for trying though. I also uploaded desktop versions for linux mac and windows

sol-roo 2019-05-04 16:09

Hey, it was hell to control the game, but i havent laughed (at myself) so much in a while! 5/5 would recommend saying "wah wah wahhhh!!" in panic to reload to everyone! (The art is also beautiful)

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 16:15

@sol-roo Hahaha! Thank you! it shouldn't be hell to control... I'm going to have to rework the level design, so that everything doesn't overwhelm you. But I'm glad you had fun!!

tozzo4316 2019-05-04 16:28

Dayum, that's very innovative, it's only that's a little awkward XD, had a lot of fun tho, the graphics are excellent and so are the animations. Don't know about the theme tho

vinay-rao 2019-05-04 16:29

Beautiful looking game. I knew going into it that it'd be an uphill battle, as my voice never works with voice recognition properly.

So I improvised. I played this game using a harmonica! That made it much more fun! I won't say the audio detection was perfect, but it was good enough.

Quite a brave decision going for this form of control scheme. Very innovative.

Certainly one of the most memorable submissions I've encountered.

Good job!

pndaa 2019-05-04 16:33

Ahaha really original and fun. Had a good laugh shooting "pon pon pon !".

hygon 2019-05-04 16:33

Nice game, I had a great time playing ! The graphics are really good. The controls make the game very funny and very hard at the same time, ahah. It was difficult to reload quickly in the heat of the battle. I had some trouble with firefox, chrome worked fine. Congrats for this entry !

webox 2019-05-04 17:14

hahaha I was with some family members, when i raised my head they were looking at me like "what the hell is wrong with you". Loved it!

le-slo 2019-05-04 17:24

Hey! The game looks very nice and it seems that with a responsive audio detection this could be super fun! I've tried it on Chrome and not sure if it was the game or the micro on my computer, but I had several problems with the game detecting the audio. Also, sometimes the game displayed a bull's eye (not sure how to say it in english, the spot where you are going to shoot) and sometimes it didn't, even for the same type of enemies, not sure what was that. Congratulations on making a super innovative game!

edevjogos 2019-05-04 17:34

Really fun game, awesome art, the reload could be shorter i don't have enough breath to reload in one go.

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 17:59

@tozzo4316 you're so right, I forgot about the theme during development. You were supposed to get money at the end of the level to buy extra shields and bullets, based on your remaining health. But eh, I only managed one level ^-^ Thank you for playing

@vinay-rao wow you innovated yourself!! Thank you for the kind words. By the way it isn't doing speech detection, it's only checking for loudness. When it asks for calibration, you can say "pon" very quietly, and it saves your loudness level.

@pndaa Thank you for playing <3

@hygon Thank you for playing! You're right I need to refine when enemies come in and give players some rest. It's not fair as it is. <3

@webox comments like that is why I even make games <333 Thank you!!!!

@le-slo The game displays the target (bull's eye) only when you have bullets. Maybe you need to reload? Or maybe it's a bug! I'll check it out! Re: the audio detection can be calibrated every time you start the level. If you say "pon" with a normal voice (not super loud), then it saves that setting, and will detect a "pon" every time. At any rate, thank you for playing!

@edevjogos omg thanks for playing and for the feedback! I will definitely make the reload shorter :)

vinay-rao 2019-05-04 18:34

@christina-antoinette-neofotistou

Oh, is that so! I figured during the short development cycle it couldn't have been THAT complicated. I thought it was listening for a pattern in the volume of whatever sound it was supplied. Like a hard "P" at the start of "Pon" or the consistent "ah" sound in "Wah". The shooting seemed to work alright with my voice, but I had trouble with the reload. I suppose going just by volume isn't a bad way to do things. It's a pretty compelling bit of player agency to have them calibrate the inputs themselves.

I'm headed to the library later today. I'll make sure to give this game a retest while I'm there.

(You'll be happy to know that it actually works pretty well with a harmonica!)

mrtroy 2019-05-04 18:35

My girlfriend never comes in to my office while I'm streaming... She came in and stared at me oddly as I played.

I really really enjoyed this game.

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 20:54

@vinay-rao thank you <3 I'm super happy to know it works with a harmonica!! I tried to make it work by blowing on the mic, but the sound loudness is too close to just breathing, so it gives a lot of false positives. A harmonica solves this!

@mrtroy comments like yours are gold, I'm so happy you had a moment of silly fun <3 Games should be doing that too, sometimes. Thank you for playing!

gurkan96 2019-05-04 21:13

I liked this a lot needs a little tweaking but for that short amount of time its cool you have even gotten it to worked

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 21:17

@gurkan96 thank you for the feedback. I agree, things get overwhelming, the enemies need tightening, and you need more time to reload between waves. Thank you so much for playing

no-grapes-games 2019-05-04 21:19

Wow, very impressive! Cool concept but this didn't fit the theme at all. I mean, 0%. Felt like this was a game that wanted to be made and was thought about way before the challenge. Cool game, but hopefully not the future in gaming.

tiagorrech 2019-05-04 21:20

I really like this premise! It's a rare thing in a LD, to see a game that's voice controlled. The art style is very cute.

Very original entry. Congrats!

copper-aardvark-games 2019-05-04 21:21

Amazing art and gameplay. Super fun and polished. This has a good chance to make it up there in the voting!

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 21:27

@no-grapes-games You're right, I failed at the theme... I totally started with the theme. It was very cliche though: a shooter where you finish a level and your remaining life is used as money to buy extra ammo and a shield. Then I thought what if the upgrades scroll automatically and you just shout "NOW" into the mic when you see one you like. Then I thought my theme is weak anyway, let's go for the gusto :D I don't see how it could be the future in gaming... Thank you for playing though :)

to be clear: I don't even vote for themes. I've been doing LD for 10 years now, and what I love most about it is being surprised by the theme. I try to stay close to it, but if I'm not having fun it's the first to go.

@tiagorrech thank you <3

@copper-aardvark-games Thank you for the kind words!

fusionnist 2019-05-04 21:36

Really cool concept! Your graphics are as always amazing, and playing with my voice is a really fun experience! (My family may or may not disagree with that notion). Sounds are cool - I could wish for some music to play, though I can understand why there isn't any here. The calibration voices are really cute! As for growing intensity, I suppose a post-jam version would deal with that by adding a few challenges/new enemies or such. A solid entry overall, with a quite unique twist. Cheers!

karmicretribution 2019-05-04 21:50

I was having trouble playing because I was laughing too much. Not such a bad problem!

2019-05-04 22:08

Wow, the game is awesome! I think my neighbors heard me screaming "pum" "pum" and "Waaaaaah" really fun! Though I didn't rate for 1 reason (it says the game was published 10 hours ago)

majana2 2019-05-04 22:24

I was really surprised to see a game like thIs. I enjoyed playing it, although I had issues with voice recognition. Good job

someone 2019-05-04 22:26

That was certainly an interesting experience. Took a while to realise the targeting reticle was what I was shooting at as it doesn't always appear for some reason. Also the Linux build starts in a super tiny window. It resizes ok though.

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-04 22:32

@anonymous thank you! and yes, I had Ludum Dare's Mike resubmit it for me, because I messed something up and it said "unpublished"

@majana2 thank you ^-^ Would you mind telling me your issues? It helps a lot! Just a heads up, there isn't any voice reognition, it's just waiting for a loudness threshold. During calibration you can say "pon" in a not-too loud voice, and it will use that loudness level throughout

@someone thank you for playing and for the feedback on the Linux version! The tiny window, is probably the native resolution (160x96). I'll add a command to resize automatically. The reticle doesn't appear while you're reloading. If it doesn't appear on other occasions, it's a bug. I'll check it out. Thanks again!

purrfexionator 2019-05-04 23:20

This is definitely one of the more unique games I've played. It's not the most fun in terms of gameplay, but it is definitely super innovative. The utilization of voice controls is something you don't usually see in Ludum Dare games, but it definitely works. I will mention that when I started the game, the targeting reticle was not present even though I had ammo, and when I said "pon", it made the shooting sound effect but I didn't hit an enemy, so I just had to shout "pon" a whole bunch to run out of ammo just so I could reload and be able to shoot things. Aside from that, it was an enjoyable and mostly bug-free experience. I loved the game's art style; the attention to detail on all of the assets was stunning, and it made them all enjoyable to look at. The audio works, and gives the player feedback whenever it is necessary, like when you hit something or when you've been hit. I also enjoyed the kind of in-a-mech-suit aesthetic you were going for here. Overall, well done! A solid 4-star game in my opinion!

p.s. If you knew your game didn't fit the theme, you could have opted out of the theme category. Following the theme isn't actually an official Ludum Dare rule, it's just a suggestion, a way to give people a starting point and not have them sitting around the whole competition and not knowing what to make. It's completely fine that your game didn't fit the theme, and it's still a really unique experience!

blondhie 2019-05-04 23:30

I like the concept and originality of the game. I only wish I could have made it passed the calibration. I'd liek to see more of these types of games.

carlsonandpeeters 2019-05-05 00:52

Really creative and unique game, I'm impressed that the audio recognition worked as well as it did. I had fun talking to myself in my apartment. Its definitely less responsive than playing with normal controls, but it also feels like thats the goal. Good stuff!

hutchings90 2019-05-05 01:06

lol lots of fun! Although, I'm a little embarrassed to play it in fear that others will hear me...

michael-wingfield 2019-05-05 03:57

I am super impressed by this game. Great integration with the microphone. Can't say I've ever played a game jam game that used the microphone.

moldymagnet 2019-05-05 06:40

Voice control did not work for me, but I gave scores based on the assumption that the voice control was working (a friend said it worked for them)

yaen 2019-05-05 10:09

Hey, worked in chrome! Thanks! Was pretty fun yelling at my computer screen :D

goerp 2019-05-05 11:50

What great graphics! And nice idea to use a voice controlled game. After I read about using a harmonica I tried to use my Commodore64 as synthesizer. That made shooting reliable, but I was never able te reload completely. It always got to a certain point and then got stuck. So I didn't come very far, but had fun trying. a FUN entry.

mateusboga 2019-05-05 20:01

Such a weird but awesome concept for a game, I love it xD Absolutely love the artstyle, great work!

sylvie 2019-05-05 21:37

I saw this on a stream and it was hilarious! The art is super cute and the concept is really unique. I had trouble getting the "waaaa" for reload to register without being really loud, so I couldn't beat it.

ursagames 2019-05-06 10:11

Hey there! Just letting you know that the last day of my LDJAM streams (https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames) will be this Monday night around 7PM PST. Since you selected to wait for you to be in chat, your games will be played near the end of the stream if you can't make it! Thanks for sharing your game with the stream, hope you can make it!

tapehead 2019-05-06 10:51

Hahahaha this was definitely fun! Cool idea and it looks good! I wish that the reload could be a bit shorter.. but nevertheless is this an very cool entry!

gamefive 2019-05-06 11:28

WOW Great!!!!! 우와 엄청난 게임이에요 ㅎ 너무 재미있어요 내 한국어 목소리도 잘 알아듣네요 ㅋㅋ

hugonun 2019-05-06 14:25

Love the art style, played it when no one was home to make sure they don't think I'm weird, but I'm sure some outside have heard me :P

ursagames 2019-05-07 06:42

Thank you for submitting your game to be played on my stream!

Once the stream is finished you can find the video here: https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames/videos If you want to know when it was played you can find your game in the queue here: https://tinyurl.com/y5rdokvp

purrseus 2019-05-07 11:04

This is super weird, I hope my roommate doesn't judge me

Super innovative idea, great implementation, outstanding graphics and mood, one awesome game!

ave 2019-05-07 11:41

Really interesting idea, especially for a jam - surprised you got the audio tech in! The art is awesome too! I played it at work so I just rubbed my finger over the microphone haha

mathstr0fficial 2019-05-07 12:19

Haven't gotten around to rating yet, but would you be OK with sharing some source code? I'm a C2 dev as well and interested in how the voice recognition would work!

franklins-ghost 2019-05-07 12:20

Clever and unique gameplay, liked how you used the microphone for controls. The art as always was also fantastic.

dimesto52 2019-05-07 12:21

it's an interesting idea .... except for me, who has a parrot at home ... just a little thing the reload is a bit too long

pixel-boy 2019-05-07 19:08

Super cool art as always ( I love the animation of the character who jumps and rolls ), and the concept is really fun, nice work !

pl4typus 2019-05-07 20:04

Your game looks so cool! But I don't have a microphone :sob:

gamefive 2019-05-08 13:00

게임을 하는데 타켓팅이 자동인가요??? 타겟팅이 안될때가 있어요

nikolay-zapolnov 2019-05-08 17:32

This is the funniest game of this LD :) Especially fun to watch at streams. Great job!

kappa-b 2019-05-08 17:34

Very Fun! I couldn't stop laughing with Waaaaa! very good game! I would love it if maybe for the future upgrades you can add a Woooo! for dodge mechanic or a Wiiiii for an ultimate attack. very Well done!

evgeniya-zapolnova 2019-05-09 13:56

I would like to give useful feedback, but PON PON PON, WAAAAAAAH! I don't know what I can say more :) It is awesome!!!!!!!

snowschu 2019-05-10 07:52

LOL this game was great! Great idea to use the microphone as the mechanic. The art was spot on as well. Really clean. Only problems I had was the game lagged a bit over time. Can't wait to check out of the other games you've made.

Thanks for hanging out on the stream, as well! Here's the [link to the steram](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/422835552?t=02h12m20s). Your game should start around [02:12:20].

hypersquid-studios 2019-05-10 10:31

Really nice game the mechanics were really cool took me a while to figure it out but other than that cool

ivan-garcia-filho 2019-05-11 02:50

Nice graphics and the voice oriented is something realy awesome... it's something hard to achieve for a jam and the idea is also something that also allow users with some kind of disability to play your game... it remember's me of a game called "there came an Echo" on steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/319740/There_Came_an_Echo/

Nowadays i work with virtual reality and i love the way that the technology added to artificial inteligence (like voice recognition) could bring entertainment to those which can't have the same experience because of their differences ...

You could add ambience, and sfx to enhance the feedback and the timming of the user.

attala 2019-05-15 18:24

The WAAAAAAHHH sound does it all :) Me and my daughter had a lovely time, thank you!

coleslaughter 2019-05-16 04:11

I 1000% love the idea of this. It's rare that a game surprises me and makes me crack such a huge smile. :)

I just really really wish it was a tad more functional! Reloading never happened as smoothly as I wanted it to, and reticles stopped showing up after my first playthrough (I had to reload the browser every time I wanted to try again).

The art and animations were downright gorgeous and the personality was off the charts! I would love to see this game polished and expended on in the future! :)

EDIT: Downloaded the Windows version, didn't encounter the reticle bug there. :) Also, I had better luck reloading when I started at a higher pitch. Maybe consider accommodating lower pitches for people with deeper voices like me?

christina-antoinette-neofotistou 2019-05-16 21:00

@purrfexionator Apparently there's a bug where the reticle doesn't acquire its target automatically on some computers. It must be a timing error. Oh well, jam game! I will hunt it down and fix it. Thank you so much for playing! Also thank you for the suggestion, I thought I *had* opted out of audio, theme and humor, but it turns out I hadn't.

@blondhie thank you so much. If it didn't pass the calibration it means it didn't see your microphone, or you have more than one microphones. I will work hard to fix that <3

@carlsonandpeeters thank you! Now that I'm working on it post-jam, it seems I just made hasty decisions, and in fact it's easy to make it very responsive. So I hope going forward I'll do a better job. Thank you for playing!

@hutchings90 I hate that our culture places so much importance on seriousness/ embarassment. Thank you for playing!

@michael-wingfield thank you! Neither have I, but I would love to see more games do that!

@moldymagnet I'm sorry to hear that! Since I coded it hastily, it only checks for one microphone. I'll do better in future.

@goerp thank you <3 I'm so glad you tried! I'm making a ton of changes post-jam, so hopefully it will be more playable...

@mateusboga thank you so much <3

@sylvie thank you <3 And thanks for reporting that. I am working on fixing the sensitivity of it.

@ursagames thank you so much for playing! I apologize for not making it, it was the middle of the night here in Greece <3 You were adorable

@tapehead Thank you. Yes working on the reload. It actually works very well when it likes the sensitivity of the microphone. But that isn't always, so I'm working to fix it!

@hugonun I'm very unhappy when I hear that people aren't allowed to be silly :( You're not hurting anybody! Thank you so much for playing!

@purrseus I hope we live to see the day where judging people for being silly isn't a thing. Thank you so so much for playing!

@ave the audio tech was just the game looking for loud sounds and triggering shots ^-^ No speech recognition, not even pitch detection, only sound/silence. Thank you very very much for playing!

@mathstr0fficial there is no voice recognition, I'm just getting the input source (mic) from the UserMedia object and then applying an Audio.Analyzer filter to it. I'm then comparing the analyzer.peak value with some volume number (i.e. -5db). If it's louder than -5db, it triggers a shot. You can check out the official tutorial included in Construct 2, called "analyzer".

@franklins-ghost thank you so much <3

@dimesto52 oh nooooo. I hope the parrot had fun too? Yes, I've been told by a few players the reload is too long. I think the bug is it doesn't hear you loud enough, so it doesn't load fast like on my PC. I'm working to fix it, so thank you!

@pixel-boy thank you <33 Wow you noticed that roll haha

@pl4typus I'm sorry :( It works on smartphones as well, although a little laggy.

@nikolay-zapolnov thank you so much <3

@kappa-b thank you! I'm glad it made you laugh! I've planned for dodging and charged attacks, but in order to keep the mic engine responsive, they have to be context sensitive, i.e. you can't have access to all 4 of them at once. Thank you for the suggestion and thank you for playing!

@evgeniya-zapolnova thank you Evgeniya!!!!! <333

@snowschu thank you! I will get to the bottom of the lagging issue, so thanks for reporting that as well!

@hypersquid-studios thank you!

@ivan-garcia-filho thank you! Thank you for the link to that game, it looks awesome! Mine is a lot simpler, it just listens for sound loudness. <3

@attala I'm so glad!! Thank *you* both

@coleslaughter aww thank you so much! I am working on it in fact! Hm the game doesn't care about pitch at all, only loudness. My theory is when you go higher pitch, you strain more and you make a louder sound. I will absolutely fix the sensitivity issue though, so thank you for reporting!

2019-05-18 12:10

Hey there! Still no proper internet, but I think my mobile data limit got renewed for the month without resetting the counter or something, so apparently I have mobile data again? If I overrun it usually gets disabled and I get a text telling me I can buy more, so I hope I'm not getting automatically charged extra on my phone bill or something now, haha. But that means I played it!

Even being all alone, I have to say I feel a bit awkward playing this sort of game, haha. Poor cats had to listen to me go off. But it was fun! Reminds me of Wario Ware and other DS games that used the microphone. Too difficult for me to ever get very far, however, I'm afraid. :p

Top notch graphics as always! Once again gives off a bit of that original DS feel, actually. Lovely colour scheme. Cool variety of enemies. Great sounds too.

Too bad about the theme, but eh, it happens! Great game! \o/

schmavery 2019-05-18 22:49

Very entertaining and difficult -- like others in the comments, I had everyone in the room staring at me. For some reason I had to wahhh for a long time/repeatedly in order to reload but that just contributed to the urgency of the situation. Great graphics and sound effects too, liked the vibe.

affinitychris 2019-05-18 22:55

Delightful mechanics! Definitely had a hard time getting the "Waaa" to work in game (seemed fine in the calibration, though), but I still had a fun time panicking into my microphone :)

aeveis 2019-05-19 05:32

Interesting! The art and animations are very and the voice controls are interesting. I had a bit of a hard time because of the reticle bug (my laptop is older so maybe it's a framerate thing?) but very cool to see the voice controls working. I would have liked more feedback when an enemy was hit (a sound or fx). I would see the laser hit but wasn't sure if it had killed the enemy or not. I noticed with the waah to recharge it was more likely to detect for me when it heard the beginning of the sound (so more wa-wa-wa-wa than waaaaah) haha. Nice job!

neontropics 2019-05-19 09:57

My favourite game so far! The silly voice controls brought a smile to my face.

It would've been great to more of a hit/explosion sound when hitting enemies.

alchemic 2019-05-19 20:19

Objective complete! Very cool game. It took me a few tries to get the voice recognition working well, but once I did it was really fun! The animations are very good, I love the art style!

mirialena 2019-05-20 20:57

whaaaaaa!!!! (translation: I don't speak english but I like your game a lot)
