Had a lot of fun playing this game! Combat felt very balanced; enemies were not bullet sponges, but they weren't too squishy either. Fights last just long enough to be interesting, but don't drag on. There's an incredible amount of content in this game, I'm very impressed with that!

I do wish there was some degree of progression, or some variation on the game mechanic. I more or less felt like I was doing the same thing throughout the game (which itself was pretty fun), so it might as well have been one big level.

The boss fights were a good uptick in difficulty. Felt like a final battle.

drazil100 2017-04-29 01:06

This game was very solid and controlled really well. My biggest complaint was how the dash was implemented. I don't have the highest sensitivity setting on my mouse and I am usually pointing my mouse at the enemies to shoot at them. The dash also being tied to the mouse position made it utterly useless as it would only serve to dash me into enemies. On top of this my position on the screen greatly effected where I dashed to. Ultimately the dash would be better if it was either tied to only directional arrows instead of the mouse.

That aside the guns all felt great the graphics were fantastic and the gameplay was pretty solid! I would love to give this another shot if the dashing was more effective!

officialcodenmore 2017-05-01 21:36

I enjoyed the game quite a bit, and the graphics were very well crafted!

adamalexander 2017-05-02 09:18

Nice one on making such a complete game with cool graphics and an epic soundtrack. Really the music added a lot to the atmosphere of the game and added heaps of value. Made me feel like I was running and gunning through the corridors like in Doom. The controls were pretty solid too, and I liked the variety of enemies and the fact that you had not one, but two bosses.

The dash move seemed a bit underpowered to me, since I always dashed where I was aiming, which tended to be towards the enemies line of fire. Whenever I used it I ended up taking more damage then my enemies. Maybe it would work better to dash in the direction you're moving so you can avoid bullets.

Overall though well done

dgspitzer 2017-05-02 13:13

Fantastic game! Really intense and intriguing (as a hardcore DOOM fan). Enjoy the experience of collecting BFGs!

paulhocker 2017-05-03 04:18

really solid game here - nothing ground breaking but for 48 hour really polished - you should be quite happy with your results - awesome game

megalink 2017-05-03 06:00

@dgspitzer Thanks! Doom was of course a heavy inspiration for this game, especially with the weapon and enemy designs.

@paulhocker Thank you! Keep in mind that this game was made with the help of my incredibly talented team, in which this game would be awful without them. A long with an extra 24 hours (since it was for the jam)

ryan-rose 2017-05-03 06:54

Really tough. I enjoyed the difficulty but I wondered how it matched a small world.

oxlander 2017-05-03 15:32

Can't play because no Mac version  but was able to rate the music, great work! Sounds intense!

rucoon 2017-05-04 00:30

Kind of wish the gun sounds had been a bit quieter as I can't hear that sweet music that well. :( But overall really nice! The only problem I found was that you can hit enemys that don't have a line of sight on you with the bow.

breno-m 2017-05-04 03:04

The music and mood are really good. The game duration is pleasing for a jam. The difficulty was on point, especially in the bosses.

maldo19 2017-05-04 05:07

It's a fun game. I have some nitpicks though, the collision is weird I got stucked on a wall while dashing and bullets have a problem when I tried to do some diagonal shooting. The last one is a special issue because of the path with the four enemies at the end where they are surronded by walls as the enemies' bullets can't reach the player because of the wall collisions. Other than that and that the bosses are too easy (I just stand still near the left wall) I would say that this is a good game, good job.

kevtukk 2017-05-04 12:36

Okay, I love it. A really fun action game. The graphics are simple but the whole game has a nice style to it. The music is absolutely amazing, i started dacing around the enemies. The bosses were cool with different patterns of attack. And it has a good amount of content.

Just one nitpick for me: I wish the players bullets would have a bit more impact. The knockback is good and the screenshake is a really nice touch, but maybe some particles around the enemies when hit?

But still: Cool and fun game, I love it, great job!

megalink 2017-05-04 12:38

@kevtukk Thanks!

listonos 2017-05-05 01:46

Took me a little bit to get into it but at the end of the day, satisfying top down shooter. A slightly better sounds effects for shooting would be my next improvement.

porcus-pie 2017-05-06 00:30

Holy cow that was fun, like actually. The action was great and the game was so satisfing to play. I got geniunly dissapointed when I reached the boss of the prison, and was then delighted when the game kept going. It played really smoothly and I love how you can pick up new guns and weapons, which added another level of variety. The enemies were just the right difficulty so you couldn't just one hit them, but at the same time they weren't impossible. My only realy complaint was I don't think the dash was overly needed, half the time it didn't work for me and the other half it was just kinda pointless. Other than that great fun and I will most likely play this again. (Oh, and the game also froze up and crashed for me)

megalink 2017-05-06 00:33

@porcus-pie Thanks! Did it come up with a error message when the game crashed?

porcus-pie 2017-05-06 01:55

@megalink Nah, just froze, so I tried reseting the game and the music was still playing even after I closed it

veralos 2017-05-06 05:07

This game is super cool, though I'm not too sure how it fits the theme. The graphics look pretty nice with all the glow effects and different colors. The music is fantastic and all the sound effects sound right - though the audio balance could be adjusted a bit. The gameplay is really fun. The dash move is neat and the brief pause after each kill helps to add impact to the combat. I like how there are various different weapons to find and use, but they could be more distinct. There's overall an impressive amount of content with multiple levels, enemies and bosses.

That said, there are some improvements that could be made: * The things you collect from enemies don't seem to do anything. I think they're supposed to restore your heath/dash meter. * I don't like how you dash in the direction of the mouse. It would be good if you dashed in the direction you were moving instead so you could aim at an enemy and dash in another direction to avoid their bullets. * Dashing into enemies is cool, but it often seems too risky to be worth it. Perhaps the dash could do more damage or give you more invincibility when hitting enemies with it. * The health bar and dash meter recharge too slowly. The optimal strategy would be to wait to recharge between each enemy which would be very boring. I would suggest either making them recharge faster (possibly after some delay) or not recharge at all and supply some other way to refill them.

Sorry if that sounds too critical - I actually love the gameplay, I just feel like it could be made even better.

grasswhopper 2017-05-06 11:52

really nice game, a bit more on the difficult side. but i really love how smooth the controls are, how dark the game feels. i love the fact that, the bullets, are fast but slow enough for the player to dodge them with these smooth controls. though at the end of the game, when i died, it simply crashed. i did love the attack and bullets effects, they were neat.

also the dashing ability is very wonderful too, i think if the dashing was based on the WASD while shooting only on the mouse, it would have been neater. but thats just my opinion. well done nice game. it is.

megalink 2017-05-07 01:17

@GrassWhopper @Veralos Thanks for your constructive criticism! :) When you died and the game crashed, where were you at?

dracominer 2017-05-07 13:06

Overal the game is really good. I like the variety and how various elements of the game just fit together. This might be a bit nitpicky for a game jam but I felt like there wasn't any context for the violence that the game required. A gun was shoved into my hands and because I've played other games I knew that anything with a health bar should be shot. I think the atmosphere and a story would be more captivating if players were given sufficient context for their actions. As far as most players are aware, the player just murdered a bunch of civilians and then started shooting up an alien facility. The violence without context is what bothered me about the game otherwise it has great graphics, wonderful music, and very well made game mechanics.

le-slo 2017-05-07 13:09

Very complete game, i have the same opinion about the dash, and actually i haven't used to complete the game. The dark ambiance is great and the music fits perfectly but I don't think the theme is well matched. There is a lot of game feel here and i had fun playing it.

louspirit 2017-05-07 13:21

Whoah, amazing game! One my favourite game of LD38. It is that kind of game I am waiting to test :) Fiiiiight! It allows to let work thinks off. It responds perfecly. I like the light effects, ennemies design and fighting style. True bosses! And the weapons OMG, what a pleasure to discover each new ones  And what a surprise to discover another level !

diptoman 2017-05-07 14:54

That. Was. One. Badass. Game! Very engaging and fun to play! I wasn't really expecting a second level! And so many weapons. Bosses, too! The amount of content, considering that it's a jam game, is staggering. I didn't use the dash much, because it took me right into the place I was firing at, quite risky. Too many colours killed the art a little, it didn't feel consistent to me. Implementation of the theme also seemed a bit loose.

The music and sounds were great, though!

Good job overall.

jod 2017-05-07 15:56

Solid gameplay, great sound effects! The ambient music gave a very nice Hotline Miami vibe, and that's great praise! Well done.

zaibakk 2017-05-07 19:33

Excellent job! I really loved the music! Is a very fun and enjoyable game... and the level design, man! There are two levels with two different bosses! Such a good entry! Good job guys! :)

powerspark 2017-05-08 00:44

Awesome game! Really impressive how much was packed into this :D The bosses were super impressive, searching for weapons is always fun. Damage indicators would be cool to see how effective a weapon is. Also, I think the teleporting action should have moved in the direction you were moving, not towards the cursor, as it usually just boosted into the enemy's shots. Great fast paced shooter though!

poffle 2017-05-08 13:39

Well, this was awesome and I was gutted when it was over. I wanted more! The guns felt good, the enemies were fun to kill, I enjoyed exploring the levels. The music was good especially the first level, reminded me of early Aphex Twin, was really digging it.

My only criticism would be that some of the room transitions didn't put me on the next screen where I expected and by the time I found myself I'd been shot several times. This was mostly apparent on the first level as the second level didn't seem to have as many enemies shooting as soon as you walked into the room. Amazing entry though. Really enjoyed it. 5 stars!

zeriver 2017-05-08 15:02

Game feels pretty polished and is fun to play. I like that you wanted to make your own art style and it feels different enough and is actually really pretty and matches the game mood. Sound effects are also nice and satisfying. AI could use some extra work, it was easy to exploit it and shoot it from distance or just around the corner. Also if you wanted to make dash as main mechanic then you really should make it stronger, usually i didn't bother to use it although it did save me some HP few times. And i think that you should dash in direction that is the hero moving at the moment, that would more intuitive and easier to use. In overall pretty solid game and i wish you good luck with futher development.

2017-05-10 13:01

Really lovely game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yuMfX69kxA

binaryferret 2017-05-11 14:25

Great job! That was a fun game, and you had a ton of content in. When I made it to the first ship I was expecting it to end but was pleasantly surprised when it continued on, and on, and on :D Multiple different weapons, multiple different enemies to defeat.

The music matched the game really well, and although the visuals were simplified they worked great with the style you were presenting.

Top job, cheers for creating and sharing!

Edit- forgot to put that the controls were really responsive and worked well. The sound effects for the different weapons firing were pleasant as well :D

jackass 2017-05-12 15:37

Thanks for all the great feedback! WE LOVE U XOXOXO!!!11

behenate 2017-05-13 09:11

Great music and sfx, dynamic and addicting gameplay! Controls were very good and suited your game well. I have nothing bad to say!

conk 2017-05-13 12:45

That was fun, a nice bullet hell, could've been a bit harder though :P My only issues were that the game lagged every time an enemy died which was a bit distracting and fighting enemies near room borders was tedious. Perhaps fewer particles on enemy death (unless the delay is on purpose) and have the camera permanently follow the player. I enjoyed the length and the enemy/gun diversity and the overall polish of the game was fantastic, great job!

megalink 2017-05-13 13:17

@conk Thanks! The little freeze that occurs when you kill an enemy is intentional and was added as a way of creating more impact, if that makes any sense. Thank you for your kind words! :)

random-storykeeper 2017-05-13 23:10

Dude that was badass, the music was badass, I was badass with my gun, so badass that I crashed the game upon my first death.

Chroma 01.png

(that's the message I got when I first died.)

Aside from this, I was reminded of a game I played in a previous Ludum Dare that did something along the lines of this, but somehow, I think this one is much more well put together than what I remember the other one being (I can't remember what it's called). The graphics and lighting are so good, the music was excellent, as were the sounds. Really pumping up the atmosphere. And I love the various enemies, the pickups left by enemies being attracted to the player - that element worked really well for this game. And the boss battles: while the first was pretty easy and the second I had a little more difficulty with, I thought both were good boss battles. The game was pretty reasonable with death as well.

Okay one thing I didn't understand was collecting the key, which I could later use to unlock a cell, but that didn't seem to do anything. This was when I died shortly after I did this, which caused the error message I got above. But I thought I might have had to save this key, and it ended up having no use.

I kind of laughed when the first boss was attacking me because the bullets looked like Christmas lights...not sure if they were supposed to be, but it was such a weird out of place look that didn't really mesh with the rest of the aesthetics.

Some other things:

- Pressing the E key felt unnecessary to acquire certain weapons. Most of them, if not all, are placed in their own secluded area that it's nearly impossible to "accidentally" obtain them, and it surprised me that I had to do this in order to pick up weapons and such. And even if one did accidentally obtain a weapon when they didn't want to, it's not like you lose your previous weapon in the process. - As a lot of people mentioned, I didn't like how I had to dash in the direction I was shooting. I don't necessarily agree that the dash is not needed, as I can see it working for certain rooms and bosses. It's just a matter of having the player dash in the direction they are moving rather than shooting.

Other than that, this was a treat. Great tutorial, by the way. And thanks for reviewing Terraform. :)

EDIT: I looked at your (@Megalink's) blog feed and only just now realised you *were* the ones who made Area 51, which was actually the game I was talking about. *facepalm* Yeah, this is a drastic improvement and I think it fit the theme way better than in LD37. Clearly it was different enough that I almost didn't realise I was looking at almost the same game. :stuck_out_tongue:

madjackmcmad 2017-05-16 06:36

This was excellent! I loved dashing around for the stylin' melee kills, I love how the whole space jail is bumpin' constantly with sound and light, and hell sure let's dubstep it up for the bosses. High energy, great weapons, smooth control. I had a blast and so did the viewers on my strim. Thank you!

budaniel 2017-05-16 06:39

I loved the music! The action was really solid, and the liked the glowing light effects, but that music was rocking. Aiming, exploiting line-of-sight, and dodging all worked really well.
