LD38 — A Small World

Star Traveller by SecondDimension 2017-05-03T10:50:08Z

This game is gorgeous! I love the art style, with the use of color and smooth graphics. Great work on the music, and although the game was simple, I'm glad it wasn't too challenging and still fun. Beautiful work, I can tell you guys worked hard on this!

Carefulzilla by glimaleite 2017-05-03T10:17:37Z

Great job! Love the aesthetic design of this game, only thing is I wish there were more levels (but that's a good thing). Although I know it's Ludum Dare so it's not like you had much choice for that. If I had a suggestion to give, it's probably be to make them a little farther apart, but that'd just make the game easier and it's clearly just my skill (considering some people above had perfect scores). Either way, good job! Would work perfectly on mobile with touch controls.

Chroma by Megalink 2017-05-03T15:32:47Z

Can't play because no Mac version  but was able to rate the music, great work! Sounds intense!

The Cookie Knight by aaranos 2017-04-30T17:13:51Z

First of all, really nice game for a jam! Honestly, when I first started I was like "eh there's a lot of jumping" as the other guy mentioned. However that was mostly due to the first level being a lot of brown and kind of repetitive in scenery and gameplay. The moment I did the next level I saw the colors and was immediately excited to see what will come next. I didn't finish every level (although I plan to after I've gotten around to other games on here), and that's due to the game being so challenging. Frustrating at times, but otherwise fun. What I really like about this game is the variation in levels, from the way they're completed to the way they look aesthetically. Good job!

slovenly shopper by jelch 2017-05-02T08:59:07Z

I like the idea behind this, wouldn't have ever thought of this for the theme! The idea is funny, the music fits in perfectly, and the game is challenging but beatable (played to the end :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:). Fantastic job!

Globey's Revenge by gamesplusjames 2017-04-30T17:29:41Z

Globey's Revenge is a really good looking game, I can tell you worked a lot on that! Gameplay however is sometimes lacking, I don't mean bugs because that's to be expected in a game jam. This is likely because of controls and the fact that I've rarely gotten into sonic games, which this takes inspiration from. Having to constantly switch between fast-paced planet rolling to shooting feels awkward sometimes, mostly due to the controls as I mentioned. I think this could be fixed if W or Up Arrow allows you to jump, and it's not just the Space Bar. Besides that, it's really impressive that you made something this visually appealing in 3 days. With a few tweaking this could be really great. Keep up the good work!

A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint 2017-04-30T19:54:04Z

Like Matt Fabius (ironically my nickname is Matt), I couldn't play the game because I'm on Mac. But the soundtrack works and I can say it certainly want me to play your game even more!

Paper Jam! by danhett 2017-05-04T22:39:04Z

Loved the game, and the idea of making a game just look like drawings on paper. Really innovative and visually appealing. My only gripe was the hitboxes of the flying rotating spikes (as others have mentioned above). The idea is really original and I still pushed through to beating your game; although one of the levels felt nearly IMPOSSIBLE, I beat it, and I'm glad I did! Great work, I don't think it was easy to be done in 2 days but you did it!

No Minor Task: Party of a Lifetime by XAVIER_INDIE_GAMEDEV 2017-05-04T14:03:06Z

Although the intro went on a bit long, but it was funny and I liked it. I enjoyed the cutscenes and the little story you put together. Also the 4th wall breaks with the characters that weren't really important to the plot  but the gameplay wasn't all that great. A bit too many enemies which made the level more annoying than just challenging. Especially when I got all 200 kids and then a bunch of police officers and golf cart moms were blocking the way (I realized police officers have their movement set to follow you slowly but when there's that huge wall it's kinda impossible). Glad you fixed this with the skip level option though! When I remembered there was one, I was able to just go to the next cutscene and enjoy it. I can see a lot of effort was put into this, good job!

Smoke, the machine keeper ☁ by Plumepox 2017-05-04T14:58:36Z

This game is the Ludum Dare definition of "short and sweet"!

The game is visually beautiful, I loved the music, and although the gameplay was a bit simple, it tied the central story and mood in so it worked. Obviously a bigger game with a larger world with these elements would be even better, the overall product is fantastic as is! It's actually amazing that you've gotten me attached to the characters (love their designs btw) with that simplicity. Good work you all! And good luck with your future games!

Harry Inks Shrinks by Oxlander 2017-05-04T09:54:26Z

@frodewin @occultone Yeah, I'm not sure about the Game Jolt version, it seemed to take a while to load for me as well but I assumed it was just due to ads. I'll check on it again and see if I can fix the link. Thanks everyone for trying out my game!

Harry Inks Shrinks by Oxlander 2017-05-06T17:28:40Z

(This is for any future comments I guess since I don't think there's notifications for replies to comments anyway).

I'm really glad I received so many critiques as to what I should do, like graphics (which I would've worked on more but I lost a lot of time with family and stuff). I was trying my best to add a dialog box option but that turned out to be too complicated and although I could've used other code for Stencyl (the engine I was using), it seemed to just create bugs and not work in the way I wanted so I just left it out rather than wasting more hours on it.

As for the annoying music, yeah....that's what happens when you decide to make music in less than 3 minutes because you want to focus on everything else...sorry about that everyone! Thanks for all the support despite the game being unfinished!

Momma ZILLA by Sean M 2017-05-04T10:16:59Z

I loved the mood of your game! Felt like an actual arcade game . Gameplay is fun but simple, I like the addition of the little Kid-Zillas. Only suggestion I can think of is more levels/variation, which is stuff you can add later (you only had 3 days after all :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:). Nice work!

Brainstorm 38 by DocGeraud 2017-04-30T20:16:44Z

Loved the idea! Really relatable . I actually didn't expect the platformer in there, I thought it'd just have a narrative since you said you struggled to make the game. Played til the end! It was fun, and extremely unique, so I hope you get a good placement in the end. And holy hell were you right about the dark souls difficulty. On the last couple levels I was like "I don't have to finish the game to tell him what I think" but I decided to push through and had fun. If you ever update this I have 2 suggestions: 1. Inverse the colors of the brain/eye and the main character. It'd make it much easier on the eyes, make the guy representing you look less evil, the crying less creepy, etc. Although I realized you wanted the Twitter symbol to actually be it's correct color...perhaps it'd be fixed with the colors changing when speaking/playing or something? 2. The sound effect for when you win the level should not be the same as when you die, it makes it so much less satisfying you know? It's like beating a Mario level and still hearing the dying sound. Otherwise amazing game! Good job and good luck with ratings!

[BOXAVERSE] by Fran Segura 2017-05-04T13:28:31Z

Loved the game! Great pixel art, nice difficulty (although I got stuck on the cauldron level for a while), the game felt "real". Like it wasn't just done by 3 guys in 3 days. The end was really weird though :astonished:, like what made the purple alien/akira-looking stuff appear? Did the people leave in time and left to space as well? Did only the astronaut and doge survive? So many questions...

This can really work out to be a full game with some extra levels/advancements for the box people. Like in between caveman and medieval, or before modern times, heck it can go to the future (although they'd need a reason to stay in that box haha). Anyways, the game doesn't really need anything, it's just fine as it is! Great work!

Mortuary Madness by Ted Carter 2017-04-28T14:22:53Z

I don't know if it was a bug (or one of those consequences for putting the pet in the well) but sometimes I just get a black screen, despite the sound still working.

Mad Gods by Norseware team 2017-04-30T18:16:39Z

You guys have done really well with this! The art is beautiful, the sound effects feel satisfying in a way (although kind of annoying when you button mash although that's to be expected), and the music makes the game feel calm and a perfect idle/incremental game (so that everything builds up and you unleash your godly wrath :japanese_ogre:). With a little more things added, this would be perfect for mobile! The gameplay is simple but fun, great work!

Seagazer by Turncoda 2017-05-04T12:54:32Z

I like the idea of the game, I've had the problem of many of the first commenters. I really wanted to beat the game, so I continued even after the "one more step" hint, but to no avail. Really curious as to what the end may be, but I couldn't figure out the last puzzle. Either way, simple game but good job!

(Also, I don't know if it was a bug or just a rare thing, but there were like 2-3 posts that made this weird sound when I got to them the first time. It was also extremely loud so actually scared me! Maybe those were the last, winning posts and I reached them before the others? Honestly can't say.)

STACK by Doc ill 2017-04-30T19:43:01Z

GREAT JOB!!!! Sorry for caps, still recovering from having fallen and not being able to get up.

On my first playthrough I was playing everything safe, I decided to get objects, then have a wide space, then build up and repeat. Every time I needed new objects I'd get down and add a stairway to the stack. Once I realized this would be impossible because there was likely a limited amount of objects meaning I'd eventually not reach my own stack, I restarted.

On my second playthrough I did everything differently. I searched for every object in the neighborhood first, then I proceeded to stack them. Problem was that I had already made a base from 3/4 of the first few cardboard boxes so that I could've had balance (I hadn't realized that they stuck to one another, thanks for that btw). I piled up and piled up, but once the island was almost in my grasp (perhaps 5/6 more cardboard boxes or 2 more refrigerators?), the worst happened. I only had one chair and a box left. I decided to do the technique I did earlier with the doors by jumping and adding a cardboard box to the high point of the chair. But the worst happened....I imagined it earlier but didn't believe it could happen by this point...I fell. You should've seen me frantically trying to stick to an object while falling, and then looking everywhere for something to help me back up (I only had one box left by this point). But alas, to no avail.

Anyways, great game man/woman/etc! It felt like a perfect kids stacking game aesthetically in the beginning, but the stress was just too much to handle by the end :cold_sweat:. Perhaps I'll try to beat the game after a break, but right now I need to rest haha. Next time I certainly have to follow the method in the picture above, I wish I had remembered to check!!

Sillyzilla Rampage by Eric Florio 2017-05-04T09:48:42Z

Fairly fun/funny game, high score was 3:36. The style fits, although I have 2 suggestions.

1. Being that the other characters are just a change in skin, the specials are the same and they play the same (although I wasn't sure if anyone shot faster/extended limbs faster). Because this makes the characters not all that unique/special, it removes some of the replayability (outside the higher score) and feels repetitive. This brings me to my next point.

2. The game is a tad bit too slow. The arms extending, enemies shooting/flying, everything. It didn't feel boring, but it also felt that the game could've gone faster. I don't know if this should be in an option with the difficulty or something (like making enemies move faster), but the character certainly feels too slow, and although they're giant and all, it still doesn't feel right.

Besides those criticisms/suggestions, nice game! It was solid, fun, and I wish you look with the ratings!

WHAT A SMALL WORLD! by ilikescifi 2017-05-03T15:25:37Z

The game was sadly a bit short. But it's Ludum Dare, and I too know what it's like to not have much time already in a short time span. At least you got enough done, AND it was hilarious! Great work!

LD38: Platformer 2 by LunarFuture 2017-05-01T17:27:45Z

The game seems fairly good albeit simple. I feel like it could have been bigger, but I guess that helps with the theme. Unfortunately, as gagapete pointed out, you didn't make the whole game yourself in 3 days (at least you didn't try to give that impression). But that means it doesn't seem really suitable to be entered into Ludum Dare unless it's for others to add onto it right? Anyways, I found a video that shows this game in an earlier state (https://youtu.be/LpO_lczHCUY?t=4m49s), so I can at least say good job on the colors and menu. Good luck with the future of this game!

Aether Mine by merrak 2017-04-25T09:40:08Z

Just played your game on Stencyl, had to make sure I leave a comment here so I don't forget to rate your game well!

Colonial Kart World by adamalexander 2017-05-04T22:06:35Z

Nice game! It was fun and would likely work well with multiplayer. Even though it took a while to understand the game and realize exactly what was going on (like shooting from the front, and I also would try to attack my teammates because I thought it was free-for-all), it was really great to play. I lost after nearly winning the first round as the english vs the spanish.... But in my second try I switched teams and...still got (ship) wrecked (:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) even worse.

Also, you definitely weren't just joking about the crazy physics! Sometimes I'd get on this high wave (especially when I turned up waves on the second playthrough) and fly past 3-4 enemy ships in the hopes of hitting them from the air or behind....sadly I usually was unable to aim low enough while they would manage to shoot me in the air (damned AI) haha! I also found it pretty funny that almost everything was voxel-based or low-res while the water (and that sky) looked pretty realistic. Anyways, great job! :grinning:

Sky Fishin' by mud 2017-04-30T22:26:15Z

I like the style you chose, hadn't heard of the ZX Spectrum before now but really cool looking! The gameplay is simple and fun, but can get repetitive after a few minutes (which is completely fine, you only had 3 days to work with!). The only thing that actually feels missing from this game is the lack of music and sound effects, otherwise, great job!
