Really cute game! So tempting to just smash everything, though...

In my first try I managed to get stuck when I took a BIG step beyond one of those brown hills, that was i little frustrating. (But no real problem since i just had to start the game again.)

Very rewarding to finally use the stomping power for good after being careful all the way there!

liquidbrain 2017-04-29 11:58

Rasmus wishes his first compo was this good. It’s a really funny idea you had and well executed. Graphics are really cute. The only feedback we have is that you should look for bugs a bit more and this can be accomplished by trying to break the game yourself. For example, you’re able to fly by dragging the feet very fast. Other than that, we really enjoyed it and we couldn’t stop laughing while playing it. Have an awesome day and we hope to see you in the next compo!

*(We'll be back again on Sunday when the judging starts)*

Pretty funny concept with amusing gameplay! This game sure is innovative and has interesting mechanic. Gameplay feels well balanced, you really try to avoid all building and people, but timer puts a lot of pressure, if you want you can complete game easly-ish but to master it and destroy as little as possible is a real challenge. Also it's satisfying to just stomp at the villain at the end.

tommyflower 2017-05-01 14:17

Omg I laughed so much playing this! Genius idea, great name. My (not-so-careful)zilla had some serious funny foott problems trying to make his way through the city. Really loved the foot rigging. Amazing work and saved between my favourites!

plepletier 2017-05-01 14:28

Wow!!!!! The best game i see so far! Congratulations! \o/\o/\o/\o/

spinaljack 2017-05-01 15:15

Fun game. The music was pretty annoying. I liked how if you kept walking past the boss your legs fall off the edge of the map and there's no body connected to them lol

turbo 2017-05-01 15:16

This is a very funny game! Very innovative. Got stuck at the end where the legs vanished of the screen but restarted and manged to complete it.

Hope you can check mine out too - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/island-attack

siryakko 2017-05-01 15:40

Really funny take on the theme, nice control and simple graphics, really enjoied it on computer but seems to be made for mobile

lefaygames 2017-05-01 15:48

Congrats, this is a great entry for your first compo! On my first try I made it with 1 second left and lots of damage. The second run through was a little better with 11 seconds left. I did break the giants toe during the second try though. I was standing on a building and the big toe left the rest of the foot for some seconds. The music got a bit repetetive but I think that's the case for a lot of games during LD (ours as well^^).

samlo 2017-05-01 15:52

Good lord that was hilarious. Reminded me of Bennet Foddy's games (QWOP, GIRP, etc) but less grueling. I was laughing out loud alone in my apartment the whole time. Best game I've played yet, excellent use of the theme too

kawales 2017-05-01 15:56

Great game, really liked the idea of it

jabba 2017-05-01 15:58

Awesome idea!!! very fun too!

fernandoadolfo 2017-05-01 16:04

Amazingly good, funny and original game. One of the best I played. Really nice job.

killerkun 2017-05-01 16:14

What a fresh concept for a game, I enjoyed the whole idea a lot and I can see much potential for puzzles and different levels. I wish it was longer, it is quite fun!

Moving the feet couldn't be any more intuitive and everything reacts as you would expect. Overall an excellent idea, awesome sense of style and visual harmony, the execution of the game is incredible.

Nicely done!

kr4ft3r 2017-05-01 16:31

Really inventive, gj on that! And, being careful and tiptoing only to crush a building on your next move is hilarious xD

sararycow 2017-05-01 17:05

Small and funny game, I enjoyed the ride. I like the original concept.

asturk 2017-05-02 00:27

One of the most creative Compo Entries for sure! Really loved the idea and the sense of humor behind it! Enjoyed a lot this game, its a really fun one, good job! ;D

foolmoron 2017-05-02 00:45

Amazing execution. The control and animation of the feet perfectly evoked the feeling of tip toeing and trying to avoid doing damage.

epicsoft 2017-05-02 01:36

What a game! I can't stop playing. Theme fits good, graphics are fine and the idea is humorus

spaceman 2017-05-02 01:46

This was great! I did encounter a bug where I couldn't pick up the trailing foot when it was at the edge of the screen though.

2017-05-02 01:49

beatiful

rayriver 2017-05-02 01:51

Really fun! I didn't finish the first time, so the second time I destroy all and I made it lol.

tweedle 2017-05-02 01:52

2017-05-01_2049.png

sure i killed 900 people BUT I SAVED MILLIONS RIGHT?! RIGHT?!?!?!

lol, this was great work - loved the motion of the feet and the screen shake destrucion feel. well played sir! congrats!

gao-ming 2017-05-02 01:59

Very fun. The graphics are beautiful. Great work!

mooncalf 2017-05-02 02:18

Absolutely epic. The only game so far my 8 y/o who is watching demanded to play. Then again ...

Small issues with the camera and both feet staying easily clickable on big steps. Would have liked some camera scaling to keep them on screen. And of course ... more screenshake ;P.

Well done!

fixedgerald 2017-05-02 02:28

Very cool, we had a similar idea lol. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/giant-friend

yukonw 2017-05-02 03:21

Really cute and fun! I totally didn't smash everything my second round, haha.

impbox 2017-05-02 05:18

Very fun and cute! Really enjoyed it, quite tricky not to crush everything. Would be good to have some more levels. The sounds were nice but needed some screams, the music was a little annoying though but suited the mood of the game I think. Art was very nice, especially the feet.

impbox 2017-05-02 05:18

You should totally make this a mobile game! And nice use of the theme too.

for-science 2017-05-02 10:59

I agree that this would make an awesome mobile game. A very polished execution on a great twist on the theme. Had me playing a few rounds and laughing all the way. Keep it up! I want to see that turned into a full game!

jorbits 2017-05-02 15:41

Really good game. First I thought I have to destroy everything, but this was a bit too easy. A restart button would have helped ^^.

zeantwan 2017-05-02 18:22

Add levels, abilities and feet customization -> GOTY

cerno-b 2017-05-02 19:00

Am I doing it right?

carefulzilla.png

No, but really, instant favorite, my first 5-star rating of LD38. Tremendous job making a game that is both fun to play, funny, challenging and addictive.

There are some graphics glitches if you move carelessly, especially if you try to kick the indestructible buildings (looks like I broke its toes). On the upside, kudos for getting the toe animation just right. The way Carefulzilla is tiptoing around obstacles and very carefully placing his foot is hilarious.

cerno-b 2017-05-02 19:01

There we go:

carefulzilla2.png

I forgot to mention, the music is really great. It fits the game very well in its goofiness. I have no idea why you excluded it from rating. Procedurally generated sfx via bfxr is also valid for rating, I don't see why the music shouldn't.

Also the humor is spot on. "Carefulzilla, just be really careful this time". Perfect!

I think your working title was Toezilla, I think I spotted the old name somewhere in the summary.

Minor nitpick would be that when you restart, I think it should be possible to skip the intro, or maybe even skip it altogether on retry. That way the player can get back into the game immediately for another round.

glimaleite 2017-05-02 22:50

@cerno-b Thanks for your feedback! Yeah, I forgot to change that name on that screen, I guess... About the restart thing, you are totally right. That's something that makes me nervous in most games I play and still I didn't think of that on this one. Probably too tired haha. Thanks!

@impbox Thanks! I'm actually thinking about it. I already have a working build, just have to do some fixes and make some sort of terrain generation.

@mooncalf Hey, thanks! That's very good to hear. It's great to know that kids are having laughs because of this game :)

simonhutchinson 2017-05-03 00:34

Oh dear those poor people. I am NOT good at being a careful giant (good to note for future reference).

Anyway, congratulations on a really fun and original game!

paulhocker 2017-05-03 04:10

this has ipad/iphone game written all over it - great job - here was my best score

2017-05-02_23-07-36.png

sean-m 2017-05-03 04:16

Hilarious! I love it great work - the movement feels really polished

oxlander 2017-05-03 10:17

Great job! Love the aesthetic design of this game, only thing is I wish there were more levels (but that's a good thing). Although I know it's Ludum Dare so it's not like you had much choice for that. If I had a suggestion to give, it's probably be to make them a little farther apart, but that'd just make the game easier and it's clearly just my skill (considering some people above had perfect scores). Either way, good job! Would work perfectly on mobile with touch controls.

maakep 2017-05-03 13:48

Great game, you commented about how similar our games were, which is hillarious! Great execution, I'll try to give some feedback, starting with the enhancement areas:

Amazing art but some entities doesn't quite fit in; The white house, I destryoed like 4-5 of them before I even realized that it wasn't an invisible building, the white just blends in and the eye doesn't see it.

And the buildings; just small windows or something to decorate would be a nicer enviornment, I think.

Other than that; awesome. Love the toes and the physics of the foot and... mostly everything - even the source code looked good! Oh and I got really excited when I realized I had to kick the head at the end and got rewarded with a satisfying face from the evil head.

stoemason 2017-05-03 22:39

I'm not a terribly good reviewer, so I'm sticking with commenting on the good games. (Notice how I'm commenting here?)

Gameplay is very simple but fun, since it controls very well. The controlling-limbs-with-your-mouse mechanic has been used in a few games to varying degrees of success, and it's implemented really nicely here.

The somewhat wacky art fits the overall humour, and the presentation in general is cohesive. The music is a bit repetitive, but not annoyingly so, all things considered.

Overall, I think this game is hilarious, and a great entry into the compo.

gris 2017-05-04 10:22

Love the vibe of the game. Cool that you did the music in that manner. Sometimes I did put the legs too far apart and had to restart. Fun to play. Congrats!

those-30-ninjas 2017-05-05 03:18

I felt like it let me get the legs separated a bit too far to where one was off camera. However that's really my only complaint. Excellent name to go with the premise. All the sound effects and destruction felt great (even though it meant I was messing up) Really great game.

iron-leonem 2017-05-05 03:24

You can tell you have a good title when people are screen capping their scores XD So close to a perfect game, only problem is I could actually move my feet such that I could no longer control them. Otherwise, an amazing title!

seanohue 2017-05-05 03:34

Fun game begging for a port to mobile. The only issue I ran into was being able to drag one foot infinitely far while leaving the other behind and being unable to return to it. The music and graphics were quirky and irreverent which was a funny contrast with the horrific destruction I (totally accidentally) caused.

chuigum 2017-05-05 03:41

No. Lie. I've always wanted to make this game, every Ludum Dare I think of this idea. A big godzilla that doesn't want to hurt anyone so you got to avoid people, cars, etc. I sweaaarrrr, that's so cooooool! Every LD I think of that I swear, and here it is! Awesome job! :DDDD

knightowl 2017-05-05 03:48

Cute little take on a game. I did get some lag when squashing a building, but that was the only downside.

apostate-games 2017-05-05 04:02

Great concept! Love it...had some issues as well with feet getting stuck but very minor problem.

chronosv2 2017-05-05 04:05

This was a lot of fun, and a really clever take on the theme. Once I figured out the brown things were like platforms I did a whole lot better. 95 deaths, 64k in damages... I'm sure I could do even better though!

danman9914 2017-05-05 04:13

Hilarious concept flawless executed. I knew exactly what I was in for when I saw the title. Great polish too!

joyfired 2017-05-05 04:34

I really loved the concept, and the take on the theme is so unique. Pretty fun game to play, except for the times when you drag the feet off of your screen (shouldn't be allowed imo) lol. Also, feet can glitch pretty easily:

http://prntscr.com/f4akmq

But they recover quickly so it doesn't really matter.

Good job, really fun game and all I would wish for is if it would be more polished (Ludum Dare and polish doens't really go together too well though lol).

k8n 2017-05-05 04:46

There were some funny glitches when I tried to move legs through indestructible buildings. But they only complement mayhem I brought to the city. People asked wrong zilla to help them! HAHAHA! Awesome!

powerspark 2017-05-05 06:10

Hilarious entry :D I played at first with the intention of destroying everything... which was fun as it was! Then trying to not hit people added a lot of good challenge. I think some reliable tip toeing would help the awkwardness a bit because the very edge of the heel would always break something-- also restart button of course. Otherwise, awesome game for compo, it looks like a game that took months! Great job!

jasperarmstrong 2017-05-05 06:31

Very cool idea for a game, I had a lot of fun playing. One thing i noticed was that if you drag a foot too far, it's possible to get to a point where the camera isn't showing either of your feet, making it impossible to continue.

doppelgunner 2017-05-05 06:35

It's so funny I didn't read the instructions I just noticed that you were suppose to save the people. Since I didn't know I killed everybody only to find out at the end that I made a mistake.

ddrkirbyisq 2017-05-05 06:48

Lol, how could I not play a game with this title and screenshot??

Spot on in concept and execution, just needs some easy bugfixes as already mentioned before :) Great job with your first compo!

crazi456 2017-05-05 06:49

Wow!! Definitely one of my favorites so far! Everything in this is so well done, from the art to the audio, to the controls. Amazing work!

rujo 2017-05-05 09:38

very funny and original gameplay! it's just that after a first careful play you just want to destroy everything and it plays a lot funnier (even if a little pointless) this way :D great work btw!

cayleblucas 2017-05-05 10:20

Very fun game. Loved playing it!

failedstarfish 2017-05-05 10:45

I really liked the idea and the way it was implemented, really fun to play

rockhoppergames 2017-05-05 11:04

As others have said, the game could use a reset button (or a mute button. I didn't need one, but I know lots of people love to play on silent). Overall, this game was excellent though, with an excellent tone and presentation. Even without the reset button, I ended up replaying until I got down to 0 casualties!

Oh, and your post on the front page said to leave a link to our games, so here's mine: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/50ft-by-50ft-or-how-i-died-in-space

tombuston 2017-05-05 11:44

That's great! This is so fun, loved how the toe was hanging around. I tried to be careful, but couldn't stop myself to replay and... well destroying everything was fun too, so... The art worked perfectly for the theme, with goofyness and everything! Really impressive entry

2017-05-05 17:25

That was really fun! You should consider expand it into a procedural generated mode. It probably won't be too difficult for you and the game would benefit tons!

Abracos! :D

nuebomundo 2017-05-06 10:58

Killer concept!

I love this kind of silly-yet-challenging mechanics in games, especially when the gameplay is a lot of fun like in this one. The smooth movement of the toe is perfect as well, it gives such a cool "dead foot" sensation lol

The only drawback were small bugs like when both feet are offscreen and you are unable to continue (impossible to grab them with the mouse), maybe a zoom out for this kind of moments (while also clamping the max position of the feet, so we doesn't end up in a advantageous situation) would be an easy solution.

Anyway, this is really good overall, impresssive entry for your first time, great job!

hectigo 2017-05-07 17:24

Fun game, really like how the legs are animated! Makes it all the more hilarious.

The graphics could be more readable, it would be nice if the city was more uniformly colored or lit so that it would stand out from the background more. You could make all the buildings clearly darker than the sky, for example.

philomory 2017-05-07 23:43

This is really fantastic. I could actually see this being expanded slightly, in-as-much as you could add different environments to stomp through and different monsters to save the cities from.

I like that there's an acknowledgement when you actually save everyone and cause no damage at all (not that I have accomplished this); is there a similar acknowledgement when you destroy every destructible thing? I tried, on one play through, and nothing in particular happened, but I may have simply missed something.

tobia88 2017-05-08 02:41

捕获.PNG

Once of my favorite game so far, i cant wait to see it published on mobile platform! The game is fun, and high repeat playability. Will, some of the graphic isn't clear enough, and more level should be nice though.

matita 2017-05-08 09:15

That's hilarious!

Wonderful entry, visuals are very good and even for a generated music loop, it seems to match perfectly the mood of the game.

The toes are creepy and funny, the ragdoll effect add to the goofiness feeling.

Even the name is genious!

Great job!

iluvatar 2017-05-08 10:34

This piece was one of the funniest and most enjoyable game so far! The idea of trying to "not to destroy stuff" is awesome and it was executed perfectly. Good job, my friend.

xavier-indie-gamedev 2017-05-08 14:15

I really like the concept of this game! Great fit to the theme, innovative, and quite amusing. Though I think you could've found less annoying music (even though you opted-out) :P Also, I often ended up with the left foot out of camera range so it was a struggle to lift it correctly, so that could be something to fix. The graphics fit well and I liked how you made the speech bubbles at the start too :)

Great job, especially for only 48 hours!!

adsilcott 2017-05-09 04:05

This is the LD game that we keep talking about, it's the most memorable one so far. Love the style, humor, etc. Great job!

takusan 2017-05-09 08:58

Oh by the gods old and new, this is so great :D

From what I see this would already play very well on mobile.

Slight issues when it comes to tiny glitches (leg severing on intense movement [YES, I leveled the whole city, sue me], or joints going 360), the camera work could need some love, but that can be easily fixed by allowing to zoom out. But all of that can be ironed out with enough playtesting.

But what struck me is the perfect take on the theme, great mechanic and polish. The only thing I really lack here is more levels and contenet, which is not a complaint for a jam game - on the contrary, that's a plus if players want more :)

Humour is spot on.

I really wish I could say something more constructive (I usually leave longer feedbacks), but there's not much to improve on - just give us more and we'll be happy :D

Leaving my rating, cheers and stay awesome!

[EDIT] I did find one bug - you can continue after you lose, end screen changes to win text if you kill the attacker then. Just I thing you could address ;)

howardcs 2017-05-09 16:52

"Please be really careful this time." They know me well. Sadly, I wrecked the place. Sorry to the dead and their surviving family members.

siegfriedcroes 2017-05-11 19:13

Love this game! One of my favorites so far :D At first I just destroyed everything haha but afterward I played again and managed to complete it without any deaths/destruction :) Congrats on making this awesome game :D

meenners 2017-05-12 13:00

That was hilarious! Very well done! Love the concept, loved the game! I love the fact I can bend the rules, kill people and still beat the level :D Graphics were great! music was awesome! very great job!

blackrose 2017-05-12 15:13

hahahaha its so funny game! The dificult its perfect ^^ I love the idea

evilvause 2017-05-13 02:55

Nice game!

nofuel 2017-05-13 20:32

Really funny game. I know its not the point but I had a lot of fun destroying the little city :D The sound for the footsteps and the little screenshake makes Carefulzilla feel heavy - What felt good! Loved it how you can kick the enemy like a football! great game!

random-storykeeper 2017-05-14 00:09

I had a lot of fun with this. It was definitely one of the more funnier games I've played.

"so you think death is funny" says my friend

"yes"

Well you know, some people have to die for the greater good...

Anyway, my only real issue is that I couldn't tell what I had to be careful with and what I could step on. On my first playthrough, I got to a pedestal, for example, thought I could crush it so I tried avoiding it and crushing the buildings around it instead. On my second playthrough, I decided to be less careful and try crushing that brown pedestal, but it turns out, I could step on it. There were some white buildings I mistook for the background that I kept crushing.

Aside from this, I really enjoyed playing this. I love the humour, and the art, dialogue and concept suit it very well.

aeveis 2017-05-15 00:18

really nice! I was able to beat it with various times and various damage (haha)! Overall the controls feel pretty good and I kind of like that you let the foot go and have it land. I did "throw" a foot too far though so I couldn't click anything on screen and had to wait till the timer ran out.

I don't think you should sell yourself short on the music/sound and mood categories, since all the categories are judged separately, there's not really any harm in seeing how you do there, especially if there is music and mood (at least personally I feel mood is sort of a combination between game feel/art/polish/aesthetics of the game).

I wasn't able to accomplish this, but technically since you can still move both legs in the air someone could take advantage of that and "float" over the buildings to the monster. Some buildings are pretty high though and it becomes a lot more about timing so it still kind of works in that way, haha.

I liked how the buildings were color-coded, I assumed the white buildings (churches?) were worth much more and I figured out you could step on the brown ones since they looked slightly more sturdy. I guess if there's still confusion in that area though you could add more supporting visuals (overtly, like a sign, or perhaps just more structure like steel beams or something.)

Nice job overall!

dejvo 2017-05-15 12:36

pretty good game. although, it was possible to move one leg so the other one could not be moved. but other than that, really fun game to play with original mechanics and idea. nicely done!

mortus 2017-05-16 14:10

I absolutely LOVE it! Don't know if a game is that good or if I'm just in a really good mood, but it's my favorite game this LD without a doubt. I just love how heavy the legs feel. I was having lots of fun trying to tip-toe my way through the city, sometimes smashing a building or two I didn't notice (skyscrapers really blend with the sky), but when I've arrived at the "boss" and realized what's going on I just burst out laughing.

Would be an absolute hit with a few tweaks and some more physics-based destruction. Great job!

richard-michael-smith 2017-05-16 23:58

Damn it....I'm just going to sound like everyone else...but...oh well!

This is brilliant! There is something very satisfying about picking the feet up and then waiting for the right moment to put them back down. I really did feel like the most caring giant ever!

I am not sure why you opted out of "mood" because the combination of graphics, music, and game-play really DO set a mood and I would have scored you very highly on that!

Now I want to play it again and destroy EVERYTHING!

richard-michael-smith 2017-05-17 00:00

...so I did! :grinning:

Image2.jpg

geckoo1337 2017-05-17 16:06

Hilarious. A solid entry. The game in general is very fun, the core mechanics are efficient. The aesthetic is very clever and sounds are made according to the game which gives it a good overall feeling. It reminds me Rampage on my old Atari ST. Thumbs up. Highly rated ++

bajarymi 2017-05-18 02:46

Most fun game I've played in all of this Ludum Dare. So well done, intro is awesome and just feels really good. Gameplay was a bit glitchy but it feels like it fits the experience this game is meant to give. Just really well done. 10/10

calzep 2017-05-19 23:18

Hilarious game!

2017-05-25 12:56

Fun game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo0eF_2kFRY
