LD38 — A Small World

Cardboard Cats Online by Ilseroth 2017-04-29T21:39:07Z

My friend (klekky) and I had a pretty decent amount of fun with this, and gearing up with our cardboard glory was particularly satisfying.

My main gripes would be with sound design: - hitting enemies doesn't always trigger a sound - picking up cardboard needs to be more gratifying - more alerting sounds when enemies attack

Overall though, impressive job making a working MMO and the artstyle is really nice. Had a lot of fun with this one

Carefulzilla by glimaleite 2017-05-05T04:34:10Z

I really loved the concept, and the take on the theme is so unique. Pretty fun game to play, except for the times when you drag the feet off of your screen (shouldn't be allowed imo) lol. Also, feet can glitch pretty easily:

http://prntscr.com/f4akmq

But they recover quickly so it doesn't really matter.

Good job, really fun game and all I would wish for is if it would be more polished (Ludum Dare and polish doens't really go together too well though lol).

Lottery: you judge them I judge you by doppelgunner 2017-05-01T04:40:52Z

I loved this game so much lol. The presisdent sprite was especially funny ;). Great choice of concept, and refreshing take on the theme. Really wish you could skip the intro dialogue though, and if they aren't randomized already, you should perhaps think about randomizing the characters from a larger bank of them or something like that.

Good game.

Starstruck Ducky by HuvaaKoodia 2017-04-29T21:21:13Z

What a funny concept, I really loved the models of the ducks (especially the psychic) and finally getting to the tour was gratifying, though it did take a few tries

Daydreaming Island by camilo 2017-04-29T21:10:48Z

Agreed, yes/no prompt would be nice and the art is nice as well, but the controls are a bit wonky with the clicks. It took me a while just to fugure out how to move lol

Near kingdoms by Hadik 2017-05-02T07:14:46Z

Brought me a lot of nostalgia (I used to play a lot of games of this genre) ;)

Overall pretty good, and as other people have mentioned some sort of upgrade system would be appreciated, and perhaps a larger implementation of economy endgame than just the lumberjacks. After a while the gameplay gets repetitive, though still challenging.

MARBLE GALAXY by Connorses 2017-05-20T00:29:17Z

Really like the concept, pretty cool with the movement but the controls seem a bit wonky sometimes. I liked the diversity, and though the game was aching for some music a solid game nonetheless.

Just wish that you didn't use Unity's default skybox :P

Human Tragedy by tiffi 2017-05-03T04:56:35Z

Really nice immersive game with a pretty deep feeling. The mood and music fit well together, along with the relatively bleak artstyle. As already mentioned, the combat and colliders are a bit weird, and it is quite easy to hit enemies across objects or get their AI's to glitch. I managed to accidentally herd the two beasts near the beginning stage into the passing, and they glitched into each other, unable to move and making the exit inaccessible to me:

http://prntscr.com/f3hl0h

Overall really love the feeling of the game, and though it is quite compact it left quite the mark on me :)

littleBLASTplanet by gamepopper 2017-05-05T04:13:43Z

Good gameplay mechanics, but I just can't for the life of me get over how weird the controls felt. Shooting tangential to the planet is an intended gameplay mechanic, I understand, but making it a bit more lenient over the tiny area of the surface around the curved planet would help gameplay a lot imo. A lot of the time you have to spam shoot while walking around the curve of the planet, like peeking ramp on Dust2 on CS:GO (hope you got the reference) but every time an enemy is there. That made the game a lot more frustrating for me than it could have been. That being said, I'm not sure if I'm one to speak, as judging by the concept of the game I have no idea how to make that more fluid.

Sound was nice, and it seems they were original(?)(judging by the post), so confused as to why you opted out of audio.

Overall a solid and simple game, just wish it was more forgiving

It's a Small World, So Let's Crash It into Things by simonhutchinson 2017-05-02T05:59:49Z

The molester star is really a sight to behold. While it is initially difficult to start out, I feel like the game is all around too easy, and the behavior of the star is predictable as well. The planets are too easy to maneuver around, I wish that there were more obstacles of some sort to plow through. As @wheerd mentioned the camera panning was also a bit awkward.

Overall though still a solid game.

Planetary Defense Force by TeamMonumental 2017-05-03T04:34:15Z

Really fun game, and the graphics are astounding. The difficulty did seem a bit much at first, but eventually (like 4 tries) it got much easier and more fun. Sound is pretty nice overall, the voiceover is really great lol. This might be a peeve of mine but it seems that the sound mixing could use some work, important sounds didn't seem loud enough and minor sounds too much. The scrap collecting mechanic is plenty satisfying, but in later rounds where you have scrap surround you from all directions with ships everywhere they are a bit of a disturbance. An interesting mechanic might be to have planets able to collect scrap as an upgrade or something to alleviate the annoyance, as beyond having all your planets with railguns there is not much. The controls really did not bother me that much to be honest, so that was also fine.

All in all, really great game, and one of the best tower defenses I've seen this jam

CHEM TRIALS by Hegemege 2017-04-29T22:36:47Z

Really fun game, and the art style is superb. The controls were way more fluid than I thought they would be, and the mechanic of the missiles going around the world was extremely fun to play around with. A slightly more interesting skybox would be nice, as would a different camera view. The weak point for me would have to be the sound, though that is something you can hardly ever blame a game developer for. Also, I believe I encountered a glitch where I skipped a level when I died.

Overall nice game though, and was very fulfilling to play

Ant Detective by Aumbra 2017-05-02T07:04:55Z

HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS GAME

Jesus, there's so much I can say. The graphics are just great, nothing that special but really solid. The animations for walking are really derpy though ;). The sound is also solid, nothing quite special to comment on.

BUT THE STORYLINE! The storyline is amazing, the voices of the ants (especially the secretary) are great, and their "Mother" is quite amazing xD. I was actually quite disappointed when the story took such an abrupt stop (though still a funny one, I'm guessing due to time constraints) due to the evident potential of the game being a fully fledged story.

Combat mechanics are a bit wonky, and the "You Suck" screen is a major cockblock when the gun is so accessible, and the world is quite easy to glitch through

http://i.imgur.com/undefined.png

Nonetheless, this game is still one of my favorites of this jam, and I really hope to see it expanded on in the future.

Meteor Jam by PeachTreeOath 2017-05-02T05:31:22Z

Pretty fun game, though by Pluto it had started to get a bit boring to me, I just jumped around and farmed ores until I had everything maxed and just pranced around (didn't find the game too difficult at that point). What really saved me from the boredom was your last level, whew did I have fun on that one. Took a good 3 tries or so lol.

Sometimes the game is capable of leaving you in uh...awkward situations at the least (was forced to take a meteor once) and once I managed to glitch into a block, which gave me immunity to meteor blast damage lol.

Overall really fun game, just wish the difficulty was harder, with planet X difficulty maybe being the 3rd planet instead of 5th.

slovenly shopper by jelch 2017-05-02T07:20:33Z

Really appreciate the innovation in the kind of turn-based movement when compared to other games. The game is decently hard and entertaining, just wish that there was some animation or something to liven up the aestetics of the gameplay.

Solid game though, and nice use of the concept of the theme.

Snowday by Jon Tiburzi 2017-05-04T06:26:10Z

Really nice mood, seriously gave me a bit of chills from the combination of the music and the scenery. Love the grain on the pixel art, gives a nice clean look to the entire game. Would be nice if some more interaction was allowed, though now that I think about it it would ruin the feeling of the game in a way.

Nice job :)

Infecteria by LiquidBrain 2017-04-29T22:21:15Z

Really nice art style and atmosphere, but agreed I really wish the keyboard/mouse was supported. The right stick was a bit annoying to deal with but I found it pretty relaxing play.

All in all pretty nice game and definitely more solid than the majority of console controller based (PTSD flashbacks inc) that I've played today. So good job

Roguelike One by Chris Otey 2017-05-02T03:28:26Z

Good game, though the controls defiinitely were a bit awkward. Having the controls twin stick probably would've been a better choice rather than 4 direction.

The Whole truth about Nature Selection (16+) by pascalman 2017-04-29T22:06:43Z

Wow I never thought I would have the pleasure about rating ANOTHER game on sperm lol. I like the simple flash mechanics and most of all the glorious sound effects.

I'm gonna have nightmares about the sounds those sperms made.

But no really, the game is solid and pretty humorous to play.

In Good Hands by simple-blue 2017-05-02T05:01:10Z

Really nice game, and the graphics blew me out of the water. The music really adds to the atmosphere and I really like the concept, though I really wish there was more content, some more options for me to feel like a god :smiling_imp:. As mentioned by @jackyjjc some notification would be nice, and also as mentioned the game gets boring after a while, hence my craving for more content, perhaps even more worlds to have to control at once.

That being said, I understand it's a short amount of time, and nonetheless the quality of the game is superb.

Protect by M-1 2017-04-29T21:07:27Z

Really fun, my only gripe is that the squares sometimes didn't seem to completely line up with the beat sometimes, and I had to press the keys based on visual rather than auditory cues

Also, a hold down type square would be nice for the long chords

Plutus by Apostate Games 2017-05-03T06:12:42Z

Really great take on the absorbing concept (not sure how to phrase that), and the backstory writing is humorous too. Agreed, a frame of reference would be nice, but I didn't really find myself being that annoyed by the controls (I guess I'm just weird with controls, explains my game's lol). It is a bit frustrating to start out at first, and being burnt by the sun a few times was a bit discouraging, but the game was fun nonetheless. I think I did encounter some graphical glitches however, like the planet's crack overlay not quite resetting.

Overall a pretty fun game, and a unique concept buried in this pile of games :)

Retro Rabbit by wtoa 2017-05-01T04:46:02Z

Fun game, great sound, and graphics, I just wish there was more content as a game. Munch mode was especially fun though ;).

Super Small-io World! by micahcowan 2017-05-01T03:38:20Z

Unfortunately the sound is ony mono for me, which got extremely annoying

Bitverse by klekky 2017-04-29T20:58:40Z

Yeah main problem is the awkward control bindings, after you get past that you realize that you can beat the entire game by doing level one over and over until you get the third diamond.

Also no end screen

All in all though good graphics and 10/10 would shotgun wall glitch again

Small Kingdoms by anarbitrarymustache 2017-04-29T22:50:31Z

So clean and simple, though easy. The game was really refreshing and the sound was pretty good as well. Gameplay against the computer is hilariously easy though, and the end screen could use some work (I always get this weird flash for one frame) but the game is really nice to play.

Diminishing Lands by drazil100 2017-04-29T21:43:09Z

Really nice platformer, and the shifting terrain is a nice concept. The wall jumping was hard to figure out (actually only figured it out by watching your stream), but it was pretty fun to play around with. Though the feeling you get when you end up sinking to the bottom of the map because no platforms were near you is a bit

Soleil by JoyFired 2017-04-30T21:58:58Z

@m-1 haha yeah the reason for the camera angles was me mostly trying to compensate for a lack of good camera perspective (due to me never have done camera scripts all of my attempts failed), and I actually found the top view useful for the green square on the first level (though it is a bit weird at first). Safari does behave quite weirdly with this game on WebGL, when I tested it a lot of the shaders glitched and the lighting got screwed up. As for the weird platforms and having to jump before moving, that is mainly due to the platforms being beveled, which was a 100% aesthetic choice, and due to a lack of thorough testing/other priorities I had not really dug too far into a workaround to the awkward platforms, a bad decision on my part. The jumping also hadn't felt that awkard to me, maybe because I got used to it and probably because I made the game in the first place. Should've gotten some more external testing done.

Soleil by JoyFired 2017-05-01T04:33:30Z

@shantarr-dalrae there's a video of the gameplay on this post, if needed

Soleil by JoyFired 2017-05-01T22:22:06Z

@hegemege hmm that shouldn't be true, as the move commands are in fixedupdate. I'll look into it though

Soleil by JoyFired 2017-05-02T03:31:06Z

@iseeicy yeah I contacted unity about that bug actually during the jam, and it appears that they are aware of it and it's due to PCM. Probably shouldn't have used the beta release for my game lol.

Soleil by JoyFired 2017-05-03T04:02:43Z

Thanks for the constructive feedback everyone. Thanks to @hegemege I have figured out the frame rate gravity issues, and fixed some other minor bugs due mostly to bad ordering of code. The new version will be going up soon on the itch link. Keep up the criticism!

Soleil by JoyFired 2017-05-05T04:01:09Z

@gamepopper Read the controls before commenting please, you can lock the cursor with T

SpermoKart by Erick 2017-04-29T22:02:53Z

Very...Interesting choice of concept. The racing aspect is nice and all, but either I'm bad or it's too hard lol. The controls also feel a bit weird and I feel like if the camera had been relative to your sperm rather than to the world it would've felt more fluid. All in all solid game, thou I can't manage to win

Rise of the Termites by Togis 2017-04-29T20:48:08Z

Really fun, but I really wish there was a undo/delete/salvage rooms feature and more of a definite endgame. Pressing esc really messes the game up for me

Ascension: A God's Test by MatHype 2017-05-03T04:43:47Z

A strategy game that is kind of hard to get into, but is a pretty decent game nonetheless, and it is evident that a lot of effort was put into it. The beginning was sluggish (as mentioned already), but it got better after a while. Also mentioned above, lava is annoying. The sound was pretty nice, music was a bit unexpected, to be honest, but still did a good job of adding to the mood of the game. The voiceovers and interaction with the other gods were also great at that aspect.

One problem I did notice may have something to do with me having a 4k screen and the scaling not being set correctly: some of the text appeared way too small, such as the objectives, taking up a tiny fraction of the box they were given.

Overall a solid game, though pretty hard to get engaged into without any sort of tutorial in the beginning.

Seagazer by Turncoda 2017-04-29T00:36:54Z

Really didn't expect the puzzle side haha. Nice game, although sadly not exactly my type. Still cool though

Les Petites Planètes by Greeny7 2017-05-02T06:05:14Z

Solid calm game, and I really appreciate the mood setting with the sound. Past even the second level however, I feel that the game gets way too tedious, and some more action/unpredictable behavior would be appreciated. Graphics are solid, and as aforementioned the sounds really contribute to the atmosphere.

All in all appreciate the concept, and nice job with the implementation.

Sling Ship 🌏 by Quoclon 2017-05-01T04:50:44Z

Pretty good, and I love the concept. I really wish the tractor beam was a click and hold rather than click once and click twice thing. Also the tractor beam seems to automatically slow your momentum quite a bit, not sure if this is intentional.

Quantum Catburetor by jushiip 2017-04-29T22:45:04Z

Really fun game, and I really love the art style. The music is also really superb. The concept is something a bit unexpected, but that's what makes the game so unique in the first place. Gameplay is super fluid, and the only thing I can complain about in terms of that is that the world seems a bit too predictable, I felt like there needed to be more variety in enemies, etc. Also, sometimes the collision with bullets wouldn't quite be there, and it would look like they were just passing through the enemy.

Still really nice and the cat being a cat adds so much to the game just because it's a cat cat cat cat adowogtewgno :smiley_cat:

AaaRrr - Fight epic battles on our small (and flat) world by Hackschnitzel 2017-04-29T22:26:57Z

Really nice concept, and (as mentioned by @lars-dk) for me the strong point was sound. The sweet sweet sound of aarararars was pretty fun to listen to. As for gameplay, I really wish that the ships had more momentum or mass to them, as crashes don't really seem to have too much of an effect on the other ship for me. Also online multiplayer would be nice (though I realize that that is a pretty difficult task).

Cosmic Cleaner by Burgee 2017-05-04T04:40:25Z

Pretty solid game, kind of on the hard side for me but by no means did that stop the addiction :)

The concept is really unique, and the backstory equally so lol. Gameplay imo could be more polished though. Some sort of an indicator for batting strength would be helpful alongside the last position marker (which I loved). Planets seemed kind of bland and repetitive, and levels simply got harder instead of adding variety. Some sorts of other celestial bodies as obstacles other than the norm spaceship would've been refreshing. Also, it is sometimes posible to get the ball to glitch out in various ways (though there is a retry button so it doesn't ultimately matter):

http://prntscr.com/f3vwx1

Audio fit the gameplay well enough, and was pretty good if it didn't start to almost annoy me from repitition lol (I won't judge that though, I understand it is hard to create auditory variety).

Overall really nice game with solid gameplay mechanics, just wish it was expanded on more.

Kill Boom (singleplayer + multiplayer) by Headlein 2017-04-29T21:55:07Z

Really nice art style and vast world, my complaints are on the awkwardness of the controls (also couldn't get multiplayer working but that was probably my fault). The car was the saving grace, and frankly a bit op imo.

Still, the art is so nice that it's not hard to overlook the frustrating gameplay. If the car hadn't been there I probably would've quite though.

Destructo Island by morbidcamel101 2017-05-02T06:34:12Z

Really dun shooter, and the graphics are really nice. Though the graphics did glitch out a lot, and did the same flickering as @sneakydeagle describes. An explosion animation would've really added to the effect of the shooting, and I really wish that when zooming the sensitivity would go down, as overshooting is way too easy. Also changing the rendering cutoff when zoomed in so you can see the effects of your sniping and adding different sounds for different terrain (water) would help add to the immersion of the game.
