LD38 — A Small World

+1💰 (the game) by thristhart 2017-05-08T00:23:51Z

What a fun game! I thought the game's progression was done pretty well, because it encouraged exploring the game mechanics while still provided an ever-building challenge. It reminded me of games such as A Dark Room or Cookie Clicker. I really enjoyed playing, and liked the ending surprise :)

Luggage Robber by bemmu 2017-05-11T20:15:08Z

A surprisingly funny game! I laughed a lot while playing. Loved the different welcome signs in each airport XD

Mechanics are simple but engaging, since there's nice feedback for the player (sfx, animations, particles). The gameplay got pretty repetitive, but I did enjoy kicking stuff. Perhaps the kicking could have more consequences -- for instance, maybe NPCs only swarm you if you kick them/dogs, or kicking open all the suitcases attracts the police.

I once made some music with function generators and oscilloscopes...it was really hard and sounded awful. But making A GAME for an oscilloscope????? That's next level right there. 10/5 innovation.

@duzzondrums I'm glad you enjoyed it! That's one of the reasons I love pixel art too. Thanks for playing!

@eveningwayward Thank you for your kind words! They really made my day. I'm so happy to hear it reminded you of your childhood :)

Thank you everyone for your comments! It's been great hearing your feedback ^_^

@aaranos Thanks for the tip -- I forgot about the donate popup on Itch. And thanks for your kind words!

@stanislav A snowflake eating feature would be a lot of fun :)

@endlessplumber Thanks for the ideas! I glad you enjoyed the experience :)

@coderjoe I originally wrote a shader for the noise effect, but ended up just drawing a pre-rendered texture across the screen. Easier implementation! Though I did make the pre-rendered texture using my shader. So, it was useful in the end!

@megalink Thank you!

@joyfired It's a thin line between content and experience, for sure! Thanks for your comment :)

@lennart-jansson Thank you for your in-depth analysis! I'm glad you noticed some of those small details :) As far as your questions: 1) Yes, I originally did add a parallax effect. But, I removed it because it looked weird and was slightly distracting (in particular, it conflicted visually with the noise effect, which moves at the same rate as the player). 2) Rendering with the GPU. The game runs at default 30fps :P I'm not sure about the flickering. What's your monitor resolution? Perhaps I will investigate. Thank you so much for your questions and kind words!

@jorbits Nope, not much gameplay! It's more about being immersed in a small moment in life :)

@arcticmattekar Thank you! I also love C418's music in Minecraft -- very beautiful.

@zaibakk Thank you for your kind words! Glad you enjoyed it!

@palemachine Your idea for more small, random interactions is a good one! Like, little things to discover on your walk through the snow. Thanks for mentioning!

@drestuff I really like your idea of lying down in the snow. That could be really fun too :)

@louspirit I'm glad you enjoyed the experience!

@fran-segura @zach-bracken @parkdraws Thank you for playing ^‿^

Day by Day by Frolicks 2017-05-08T01:00:30Z

Intriguing idea to have the sun revolve around the planet. Nice touch building a "tutorial" into the menu screen -- you have to revolve the sun around the planet in order to start playing! As @diptoman says, additional feedback would be nice when interacting with other objects.

The Shifting Catacombs of Mu'ralagh by Madgvox 2017-05-08T00:45:44Z

Absolutely wonderful little puzzle game. I love the pixel art, animations, and color palette. Great attention to detail with subtle variations in room tiles. Music and sound were very fitting and created a great atmosphere. The jumping puzzles were tough but added a nice difference in gameplay.

My favorite part of this game is how the catacombs emerge and evolve as you play the game. The level design is extremely well-done, and it's rewarding to unlock a new section of the level. In the beginning, there is nothing visible except the main button, which immediately draws in the player and teaches them what they're going to be doing in the game. Regardless of the level's small size, I never felt mislead, confused, or unguided by the layout. I think having the view zoomed out to see the entire level was a good choice (whether that was intentional or not)!

Very impressed this was for the compo! Great work!

My Name is Bunny by AlexClay 2017-05-04T22:25:59Z

I appreciate that you made a game which presents a serious real-world scenario, albeit in a lighthearted way. This is difficult to do, let alone in a game jam. Overall, I thought it was well-done!

I agree with @cttfow that the game could have been more interesting if there were consequences or risks involved (such as for forging IDs, or selecting a new name when moving). As is, the gameplay is pretty linear and predictable, which doesn't reflect the reality of the topic you are presenting.

But I was not bothered by waiting while earning money -- it was not terribly long to wait, and it gave me time to reflect on the game's message, as well as try to learn which countries were which

Nicely done! Thank you for sharing.

Froggy by ParaPup 2017-05-14T21:46:13Z

Very cute frog animations! The game's difficulty comes from the uncertainty in the lily-pads, not from challenging controls (I actually did like the simplicity of the controls). Perhaps include some cue when the lily-pads are about to disappear? Overall, nicely done.

Escape from Tiny World by KyTn 2017-05-08T01:15:55Z

A good proof of concept. Rotating the sections of the world like a Rubik's Cube is a really intriguing and satisfying mechanic! Switching between input modes worked well and the transition was really nice. I did have trouble moving around as Mike due to sticky collisions with the walls.

Space Honey: The adventure of Little-Bee 🐝 by thiagowaw 2017-05-08T00:07:52Z

I agree with other commenters that the gameplay needs some work. But, I want to compliment the graphics -- there were a lot of small details that really stood out (good flying animation, grass deforms when bee lands on it, particle effects, glowing planetoid, atmosphere glow, etc) which made the environment feel alive and engaging. Good job on those!

In a Circle by Max Finch-Bretlaender 2017-05-04T21:43:17Z

Good level design -- you introduce new gameplay ideas in controlled environments, then ramp up the difficulty. I died so many times on the second-to-last level! Nice touch included the credits within the levels at the end :)

Recognition by maysick 2017-05-04T21:34:06Z

A delightful little game! I stumbled upon it randomly, and really enjoyed playing!

I especially liked the spokespeople characters and their animations (spokes-creatures?). The story and context they add complemented/reinforced the pacing of the game, plus was entertaining! I found myself chuckling while playing :)

It felt like there was a dominant strategy to the game, which slightly devalued some of the building options. That said, I appreciated the importance of destroying buildings to clear room for new structures. It gave the game a dynamic feel, even with the dominant strategy.

I might suggest replacing the left/right arrow icons with clockwise/counterclockwise icons. Not a big issue, but I found myself accidentally clicking the wrong one occasionally.

So glad I found this game. Good work!
