Wow! Great entry. I actually can't seem to find anything to criticize (well, maybe if the coins wouldn't get covered with ground it would keave less to random luck - but I guess that's the part of the intended mechanic). Simple, doesn't try to be anything more than it actually is, tight controls, sticks well with the theme, audio-visually consistent.
Great job!
I hate how I return to the exact same height if I wall jump and return to the same wall. Meaning I can't wall-climp. But I don't think of it as a bad thing for the game. It's just one of those "I wish I could" thing.
Really great entry. I just spent half an hour playing the game. This is a nice example of how gameplay alone without much icing can still be captivating.
Oh and the music was wonderful too, it really fit the mood :)
Nice game! Everything works together well. Wall jumping felt good, especially when the block you needed to wall jump off of was about to disappear. I only wish there were more content. Perhaps hazards to avoid or enemies or something.
Really nice game, with pretty music and sounds, and felt very Mario-esque in the platforming. Loved the ever-changing world, great game. I need more :D
Really solid game, controls felt pretty tight, graphics are functional and help the mood, music was a bit stressful for my liking but still solid. I thought weaving through the changing patterns felt pretty good and created some very tense moments.
When it comes to collecting coins they provide a good incentive to go out of your way and plan risky jumps, coins on the lower levels are much riskier to get, and can become nigh impossible when platforms are scarce, so it's natural to do a sweep bottom to top, this I feel is a negative, as it goes against what I feel are the coolest moments which comes from improvising.
On that same note I feel that there should be a few extra coins over the level requirement so you can focus more on freeform movement and not so much on sweeping the whole level, either that or switching to a more arcade-y sytem.
Overall I think you hit a really cool mechanic, and executed it very well, game is super readable, physics feel tight, hit no bugs and mechanics are readily apparent.
The idea for this game is okay, but I would really have liked that there was more game mechanics in this game.
I enjoyed this one - it reminds me of "Bomb Jack" to a certain degree. Like @avant mentioned - I would have liked it if, when I jump off a wall, I was able to go higher - rather than return to the same height. It also took me a while to realise that he could only stay still on a wall if he was holding the ledge at the top. At first I thought that I had to hold the button down or something to grip the wall.
My other niggle with the game - I assume the transparent blocks show you what is coming next - but for me, they appear too early. Perhaps a delay before showing "what's next" - I found I was jumping to a location only to discover that those blocks were coming on the NEXT step.
Despite these minor criticisms, the graphics, sound and music are all very good and I will be rating this one highly. Nice work!
Nice game with a good system and mood. I reached level 2 but did not really understand how. Because I had a lot of coin and was jumping at the top ?
At first, I found the player a bit too "floaty" in the movement, but once I got used to it I realised it really fits the game. The concept is cool, and the overall execution is good. I like the graphics and music. It could use a bit more gameplay like others have said, but the gameplay that's here is good.
Sometimes the spawns felt a bit unfair, as I had no time to move to a safe area after dying. Other than that I found no bigger problems with the game.
Well done!
The 'barely hang on to the top of a block' (slightly different than the also present wall-jump) was really a life-saver for me, and somehow made the game feel a lot more polished. Overall experience is very basic, but it all works quite well.
I also (like people above) noticed the blocks from the second-to-next 'quake' showing up, instead of just the next. Maybe it's as intended, but I think it would afford more strategic thinking if they could have different graphics. (Perhaps just even more alpha / background-blend?)
This game has some very tight controls. It has just enough momentum to give the character weight without making the whole thing seem slidey. I never felt like the guy was outside of my control. The UI and goal was easy to understand. A fun little game, albeit a bit repetitive.
Great concept for a platformer. I agree with the people above who've mentioned that the wall jumping would be better if you could use it to climb the wall you're on - think meat boy. Other than that, it plays really well, and visuals and sound design fit well together.
Do you intend to further develop it down the line? The world changing mechanic is quite unique, and with some tweaks (see @richard-michael-smith's comment), you could base a really cool game on it.
Great entry, As the some people said the wall jump could be a bit better but the controls are really good though.
The design is really good too. Cool game :)
This is a really nice platformer! I really liked the way the player controlled and the graphics look great. I really liked that you are able to hang onto the edge of a block.
I had one small issue, that after collecting enough coins and whooshing up, I sometimes spawned inside a block, blacked out and lost a live I think. Another small issue is that the blocks sometimes cover the coins.
Good simple concept. I like that you can see what tiles are coming next! Personally, I wish there was a bit more of a progression, or even something that makes you more anxious, as right now it feels a bit repetitive.
Overall a good game! Controls are tight enough too. Great job!
Yes.
Really nice work. I love the music and the complexity of the game stemming from simple rules. Good choice of aesthetics, graphics, sound, etc. too. I think it all comes together in a really impressive way.
hey man really nice game! the concept it wonderful; the shifting platforms give movement and life to the game, great idea. some other people mentioned that when you jump off a wall you return to the same height and they couldnt wall climb. i found that if you hold jump until you reach maximum height that you can in fact wall climb. although i must agree that you should be able to jump higher off of a wall. i think the problem is just how far horizontally you move away from the wall before you are able to move back towards the wall. if that were decreased, i think the wall jump would feel much better. also i really liked how the difficulty ramped up as time went on. after a while the blocks were disappearing super quickly and the platform groups were smaller and smaller, it made gameplay hectic in a good way. i did feel like if you went to the bottom coins first, it was really difficult and sometimes impossible to make it back up to the top to get those coins. this may have been intentional: make the player go the the top ones first in order to be able to get them all. however, i think just a tweak to your platform generation to make it possible to climb back up to the top coins would be much better. the music was great too, nice job! really great entry, bravo!!
I hung out in drazil's chat for a while and took some time to actually play the game for myself. It's got a neat soundtrack and the controls are well done in my opinion. There's a little bit of a balance issue, if most of your coins are spawning on the bottom end of the level.
However I had a good time playing a couple of rounds, although I haven't made it past level 3. I think this would do well with a webbuild. :D
cheers~
Really nice platformer, and the shifting terrain is a nice concept. The wall jumping was hard to figure out (actually only figured it out by watching your stream), but it was pretty fun to play around with. Though the feeling you get when you end up sinking to the bottom of the map because no platforms were near you is a bit
Very nice idea! I got around 6100 points on my first playthrough. Everything went really smoothly until it was hard to survive in the bottom area, where I ended losing up all my lives by falling continuously. The controls feel smooth and the platforming feels quite nice. Good job!
I really liked this game! I got around 4100 points in my first playthrough. Loved the random generation mechanics that always keeps you aware of your surroundings to plan your next move (with little time to do it!). It is really hard to ascend when you are at the bottom, so it is essential to work your way top-bottom and have top-notch platform skills (the controls felt really tight by the way).
Anyway, I though it was a nice little fun game to play. Cheers!
Fun game, and the **concept is fantastic,** and really lends itself to a lot of interesting gameplay. however I would have liked to see a **little bit more content**. Some different types of blocks or even some type of enemy (maybe flying) would have helped a lot.
Another thing that could have been explored more is the **exploration element** of the game. **Visual differences (even palette swaps) between levels** could have been good, in addition to some **more background elements**, to add depth to the world. They could seem to be far in the background to avoid clashing with the visual indicators of where blocks would be placed on the next change.
**Depth could also be added, making the background and style of the blocks change as you get deeper into the world.** Lava or another hazard at the bottom would also aid this feeling of descending to the interior of a world.
The music is good, and fits very well. **A change in music each level** would have been good, though, to make the feeling of progression greater.
I think that the transition between world states could have been more powerful. The entire world is shifting. More **screenshake, particles, deeper and more complex sounds, stuff like that, could really sell the feeling of this being a world "crumbling away"** as you say. It could grow more and more intense as the game went on.
Of course, a lot of these changes would be better suited for a larger time working on the game, so **a post jam version with improved game feel and aesthetics, and maybe some more content would be great.**
**This is a game I see myself going back to!**
Not bad as a 2D platformer. The shrinking platforms are a compelling concept. I liked the "collect coins to go to the next level" objective.
I'm concerned about the fact that it's difficult to predict where the platforms will appear next. Sure, the faded out platforms is supposed to inform that, but the platforms we're on top of isn't colored differently, so I have no idea if a platform will disappear below my character's feet or not. The wall jumping controls were a bit fickle as well, not always jumping vertically upwards as much as expected. Also, the platforms appearing on top of coins are a bit rude.
Really nice concept, difficult but fun. It's quite a challenge to anticipate how the map is going to change. I like the music too! Good work :)
Dude, really nice game! Graphics are cute, sound fits well, most importantly the concept is pretty unique! It becomes a nice strategy to anticipate the next platform to jump on. I also really liked that you implemented wall-grabbing/sliding. Personally, I would have liked it if it was easier to jump up a single vertical surface (like Super Meat Boy) instead of jumping all the way out and then having to slowly curve back in (if you get what I'm saying) - without this, I found it quite hard to gain back verticality. Also near the end (or maybe it was the whole time?) the platforms shifted too often and there was a lot of empty space so I didn't really have anywhere to jump too. I never made it to level 2 so I don't know how that was different.
Nevertheless, quite an impressive game! Good job :)
I have now also rated your game.
Usually i'm not into platformers but this one is actually really fun to play. Controls feel just right and map that changes is pretty cool mechanic. Also difficulty curve is really nicely done, at first it also seems too easy but quit quickly game presents enjoyable difficulties to overcome.
Rated this game now. Commented earlier.
Just rated. Like @pixzleone - I commented earlier. Good luck!
@jk5000 @pixzleone @richard-michael-smith
I appreciate your support and hope you all do well in the judging phase!
Nice concept! I really enoyed playing this game, all is well done : music, graphics, controls. Maybe if I had something to improve is the lives / coins / score indicators with could be bigger I think.
Since voting is up, I left you a rating in addition to earlier feedback. Cheers!
I rated your game buddy :) thanks for your advices by the way See ya' !
Very fun little game. I am amazed that you managed to create the physics and collision from scratch, especially in Unity which I personally find very restricting on that front. This is one of those games that I've found myself opening up when I'm bored because it makes the next 15 minutes flash by. I wish I was able to play it on my Vita so that I could use it on the bus and stuff.
I really enjoyed this game. Congrats on all you achieved in the 72 hours. I would maybe reccommend adding something else to it cause after about 5 mins of playing i got bored. Maybe adding some form of enemy or more of an objective. Despite that great use of the theme and an excellent concept :)
Hah very cool. Simple and elegant. Music was quite nice as well. Give our game a chance if you get the time. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/belaruse-panic
Fun game! Very nice world switching mechanic. Controls felt very solid, nice work!
First impression - the loud and random noises made me close it in panic <.<
I liked the movement, maybe it was a bit too slow for my taste, but the platforming was nicely implemented overall. Walljump being so limited is maybe not feeling good, but I can see why it's a necessity.
The autotiling and tile shifts were really cool, the way it progressively changes is very satisfying to see.
Overall the game was good but it became boring pretty quickly. Maybe if the movement was fast-paced it would alleviate from the problem.
Excellent game. Congratulations!
Classic art, music and SFX.
Simple concept that plays out very nicely.
Intuitive controls and gameplay.
Also, its fun!
Awesome! Best LD38 game I've played so far, really nice job! Original concept and great presentation. It'd be cool if there was a little more challenge to it, but it's super solid for what it is. Great work.
SO GOOD.
The player controls so well. It feels very fluid jumping from platform to platform. About half way through my playthrough I was wondering why it was called Diminishing Lands. I figured it out by the end.
Unlike other LD games, this one has a ton of replayability. The difficulty curve is nice, and the game requires skill, which makes your score ever more important (My highscore is 7800 as of now).
It's hard for me to really come up with things I don't like about this. I'm a bit biased because I have a huge thing for retro themed games, but even then, there's not any glaring issues (ignoring not having a menu, that kind of thing isint important to me for a gamejam).
I'm going to keep this one on my PC for a bit. Good work!!
I Played this on Livestream Today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_6NTcovuI0
The game is solid, but I had an issue where the character wants to run randomly in a direction and it was very difficult for me to play as was. I don't know if this was a bug or not, but it really hurt my experience.
The volume of the music is a bit high, even on 3% it was still quite loud. I did however like the rest of the game and it was pretty fun, well done! Check out our game if you like: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/42-mikronikus
A small nice platform game. The concept is funny and the difficulty progression is well balanced making hard enough to want to play to collect all coins but not so frustating to leave the game.
Retro music fits very well. Perhaps I felt that the next "platform wave" is confusing because not all the transparent platforms become a solid platform (and if it is not, I felt like that xD)
Good job!
Very cool game! Loved the music and the graphical feel in general. Would be nice if there were some kind of critters or other obstacles to navigate, though.
The idea of the terra forming is really interesting and works great. Also the platformer controls were pretty solid *but* getting upwards was a bit tedious. You should propably add a bit more upward motion when you are wall-sliding and jumping upwards. Also I do miss some spice - like the world decaying faster when you collect more coins or something along the lines.
Nice game and the game mechanics paired with the title well, the idea of there being fewer and fewer blocks as you progressed definitely added to the challenge. The character controls were really good and the little touches like edge grab and wall jumping put the cherry on the top. I am terrible at platformers, so I can't really comment on anything beyond the first two or so minutes of gameplay. If there are extra levels, I never reached them :P
@occultone Thanks for letting us know. That is a bug with unity and how it deals with controller input. While it is post jam we decided to update the game to remove controller support so unity wont try to read input from a joystick that isn't even there.
Very fun little game, the mechanic is nicely implemented, the controls and the feel of the character are quite good. The objective is what I didn't like, I'm not much into coin collecting. The game lacks some personality there, but overall I think you did a great job!
By request of the Author: @drazil100 I played this again on Livestream Today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr-ZBj_dJa4
Another gamebreaking bug cropped up where I wasn't able to jump without the pause menu popping up.
Very well done. Solid mechanics, nice wall jumping, and a cool and simple but well-executed idea. My one complaint is that I would have maybe liked the coins to slowly fall over time – late game it's impossible to reach high coins, which means the only viable strategy is to start high at first, then make your way down. This isn't obvious on your first play through, and feels overly punishing if you're playing well.
Cool game. Jump feels a bit floaty, but it fits the game mechanically. My only concern is that as there is progressively less terrain to jump onto, sometimes you can't get to the upper coins if you don't get them soon enough. Nicely done with the platforms appearing and disappearing, and the way you show where they're going to appear next. Good job!
Finally got around to playing this, pretty hard but still fun! I'm guessing the tiles deplete over time and get faster and faster or something to that effect? Very Cool.
