LD29 — Beneath the Surface

ScubaBear by _Rilem 2014-04-29T19:54:00

Hey, I'd say you pretty well nailed what you set out to do, the music is wonderful, there's a ton of awesome artwork. Nice job. There isn't much to it-- it's pretty much just "scour the level for collectables"-- but for what it is, it's awesome.

There were a couple parts that were a bit unclear to me-- using the double jump ability comes to mind, as does finding the last button. And I never actually found the final collectable. Aside from that, I liked it.

You successfully made 2D Banjo Kazooie.

A Bank Heist on Christmas by Hob623 2014-04-29T03:29:00

Bahaha, I didn't play all the way through it, but I admire its cohesiveness despite its rough edges. Harmony is the most important thing! It's great for what it is. The sprites remind me of Earthbound.

emilion by Helopol 2014-04-29T20:23:00

Really great game! I loved the art. I wasn't totally sure how to progress once I got to the snow area though-- I wanted to feed the bread to the bird.

I like the "once you go deep enough underground, weird things start to happen" take on the theme. I did something similar, haha.

Trapped by spacechase0 2014-04-29T00:30:00

Cool game-- could use a bit of stat balancing. For example, you totally nailed the initial running speed, so the player isn't going to want to make it even faster. And upgrading defense and vitality isn't too helpful, since the health regenerates pretty quickly anyway.

But yeah, a bit of polish to the gameplay and visuals/audio, and you could have something really great!

The Sea Has No Claim by dukope 2014-04-29T01:36:00

Pretty fun! I love the visuals, but really wish there were some nice sound effects in there.

I had a lot of fun playing it, but I think it could be streamlined a bit by taking the player to the next level immediately after beating the previous one, and doing away with the resource allocation at the beginning entirely-- the fun part was doing the calculations to pinpoint where they were on screen, and it felt like I spent half my time playing not doing that!

So yeah, strip away some unnecessary stuff, and the game could be really really awesome.

Funzi Islands by gingerbeast 2014-04-28T21:49:00

A bit glitchy, but I feel like that made me like the game more. I felt very unprotected by the game designer from the inner ferocity of the game's power; I hit refresh a million times and the sound looped over itself into an infinite noisescape and then tentacles swarmed the island and I was like WOAH OH NO PLEASE HELP

Four stars.

Get Beneath The Surface by rujo 2014-05-03T02:30:00

Very interesting take on the matching blocks genre! Might want to nail down the movement speed and make it feel really really good, but aside from that, wonderful game!

Treasure Orgy by NukeTheBunnys 2014-04-29T23:55:00

That was definitely a squeaky little thing. I dig the randomly-pitched sound, that was smart.

Iron Rising by tripleVisionGames 2014-04-29T20:30:00

Really really cool aesthetic; somewhat hard to play. Overall, I liked it.

SolidGround by hi-scor.es 2014-04-29T00:19:00

A bit Candy Box-ish, but I liked it. It had a neat visual style integrated into the web page. Pretty interesting-- nice spin on the genre.

Tell Me About Your Childhood As A Nervous Goldfish by garygreen 2014-04-30T19:01:00

Haha, "Tell Me About Your Ex."

Inside Look Activity Book by rylgh 2014-04-29T06:01:00

That was a really freaking cool concept. For a second I thought there might be some sort of secret confidential war document under there or something and the game was gonna take a huge twist... THAT would have blown my mind. But yeah, take this concept and make my dream game. I'll be waiting.

Inside Look Activity Book by rylgh 2014-04-30T01:35:00

Oh wait, I didn't realize that there was more to it than just that first and second layer! Alright, this was pretty great. Glad I played it a second time!

Fight The Infection by Thepattybeast 2014-04-29T00:11:00

Hm, I actually liked it quite a bit. There were a few flawed design decisions-- movement speed is far too low, it doesn't really make sense to upgrade your fire power beyond the point where you can kill a virus in one shot, etc.-- but it's a pretty cool concept. Maybe add in a way to save infected cells too, so that it isn't an unwinnable game.

Oh, and the Pepsi Consultant line at the very beginning was an awesome touch. I laughed out loud at that, and that feeling carried through the whole experience.

Reggid by bombjack 2014-04-30T18:57:00

Simple, but well put-together! Nice art. The digging sound effect in my headphones hurt my ears though.

Infinite Dig Dug by jotson 2014-04-30T18:54:00

Simple game, cool style.

You Are a Mole! by valgriz 2014-04-29T00:02:00

Haha, not a whole lot to it, but it's well put-together for what it is thanks to nice touches like the seamless menu.

Sneak-Easy by allurious 2014-04-29T23:26:00

Very nice art! I dig the old-timey music too. Some wonky collision detection kind of got in the way of the gameplay though.

Yumbugs by Hypnohustla 2014-04-29T20:04:00

This is goofy and colorful and great. I played about half the level and had my fill, but just seeing those little guys run around onscreen was fun for me. Nice job.

Sea's Bounty by jayemjee 2014-04-30T21:34:00

Good on you for making your first Unity game! Nice start. Having the treasure weigh you down is a cool idea, and the 3D models look pretty good too.

The Worlds Beneath by jugglerrob 2014-04-29T02:43:00

Played up to about halfway through the blue area, and I think I got the gist of it; I made a pretty similar game called Shapes of Gray. Basically, you're saying that visuals don't matter if the core isn't interesting? Or maybe I'm projecting my own game onto yours. Hmm. Anyway, cool game!

Beneath Wireframe by Manuel Magalhães 2014-04-28T22:30:00

I like it! Does a lot using a little.

At first I didn't understand the shapes closing once you pass them, but once I figured that out the game totally clicked for me.

I'm curious as to how the game would play if the pixel followed your cursor perfectly.

Beyond the Surface by Artylo 2014-04-28T23:55:00

I like it-- very well put-together intro and tutorial sequence. I think the game might be a bit glitchy for a puzzley sort of game though; if you can get past that, you'd have something really special on your hands.

Ghost Story by Yword 2014-05-03T02:33:00

Really great-looing game! I struggled a little bit with the controls; I think the game might play better with a controller. One thing you could do to make it feel a little better is let the player press the up arrow to jump.

But really great game either way. Wonderful concept.

Miner Problem by Zednaut 2014-04-28T23:19:00

Love the visuals! Pixeley goodness!

Underbelly by Sink 2014-04-28T22:42:00

Very nice! Art and music are wonderful, and I'm impressed by the two different quests.

Beneath the Game Developer by shs 2014-04-29T07:26:00

Dang.

Back To the Surface by Ken Ichi 2014-04-30T15:08:00

I like the concept! And I actually liked the idea behind the art style too. The progression in the level architecture as you go higher up was cool, and the self-deprecating ending made me laugh and kind of made the whole thing worth it. For what the game was, I really enjoyed it.

Ninja Escape by Belvar 2014-04-30T14:45:00

This is a cool concept! Very simple and elegant-- almost Flappy Bird-like, but without ripping the game off. Kudos to you for coming up with this.

The gameplay could use a bit of polish-- give the player a little bit of a chance to touch the wall a little bit. Constantly crashing into the wall feels bad. If you could get the timing down perfectly, this game could feel really really good! Interested to see you do more with this!

Necronomicon by lowcade 2014-04-30T00:57:00

Very well drawn! Audio wasn't too shabby either. You had two different sound effects for the sword, so you had the right idea, but you could have gone all out and had, like, EIGHT!

Weird collision detection though.

Escaping Scofield Mine by runvs 2014-04-30T19:08:00

Really great style! The slightly wonky pathfinding was annoying, but aside from that, great game! You did a lot with a little.

Square Rooted by adamwfindlay 2014-04-30T20:50:00

Great game! Wonderfully put together. Nice to see such a complete package. You did one thing and did it very well.

The drill thrill by d_0o_d 2014-04-30T04:13:00

Cool game! Very well put-together. The graphics get the job done, and the tutorial is great. As it stands right now, the collision detection is a bit too precise. I know, too precise, right? But yeah, sometimes you've gotta cheat a bit in favor of the player to make them feel more awesome than they really are. Make it a bit easier to pick up coins, and you've got a really fun little game on your hands.

Dr. Pepsi Marriage Consultant by Thingo Studios 2014-05-01T01:53:00

Bahaha, oh Pepsi Consultant. Very funny game. Cool idea with the text document.

Strung Out by valid4life 2014-04-29T23:58:00

Hey, you made a better game in 90 minutes than a lot of people made in 72 hours. Kudos for that.

SUPER GOBLIN UNDERGROUND HOUSE EXPLODER 5000 by helekopeter 2014-04-30T14:50:00

Cool concept! I dig the art too. With some polish, this could be a really cool arcade game.

Alien Cyclope Miner on Mars by SK16 Games 2014-04-30T15:12:00

I really like the art! Sound wasn't too shabby either. Cool little Minecrafty game. Recommendation: let the player use 'W' to jump in addition to Space, and give some other way to switch tools other than the scroll wheel (maybe the number keys) for those of us on laptops. :)

MORTON by wademcgillis 2014-04-30T15:28:00

Love the Banjo Kazooie sound. Love the Secret Tunnel. Love the frog (it's a frog).

The Hole Thing by TheExGenesis 2014-04-30T19:17:00

Really great game! Reminds me a bit of Risk of Rain. It was pretty hard-- maybe too hard-- but I could totally see myself having fun with this on a big screen in a dark room. Sort of like the dark levels in Spelunky. Yeah, tweak the gameplay a bit, and this could be pretty amazing!

Death's Lounge club by LazyParia 2014-04-30T18:59:00

I didn't have much idea of what to do, but the game had a cool style!

SUPER LANDSHARK MISSILE ATTACK! by Tuism 2014-04-29T20:16:00

I adore the lo-fi aesthetic. The gameplay needs a toooon of polish, but if you could pull it off this game could seriously be one of the most stylish games we've ever seen. Really awesome job on the art.

The Dead rest Beneath Us by flrn 2014-04-29T20:48:00

I don't think you were intending for this game to be as funny as I found it, but it had me laughing my ass off. Any game is a sort of communication between the developer and the player, and the variables in this little exchange between us lined up just right. It being your first submission, me having a very grim sense of humor; the wires in our conversation got crossed in the absolute perfect way that lead me to really enjoy this game for all the wrong reasons.

I'm not making fun of the game by any means; I just have a very grim sense of humor. The train scene? Hilarious. Thank you for making this.

The Thing Beneath the Surface by Mman 2014-04-30T21:30:00

Interesting game! Looks like you got a good start but ran out of time there at the end. I really love the art style-- made me feel like I was on Tatooine. If you were to flesh the game out a bit more, I bet it would be really cool!

Box Simulator by terraco 2014-05-01T00:10:00

Box box box box? Box box box box!

Airport Security Screener by SevenKingdomsSurvivors 2014-04-29T01:48:00

Great sound!

Moby-riDickulous by Crooksister 2014-04-30T21:25:00

Bahaha, this game is a bit rough around the edges, but I love it for it. 8-bit Pirates of the Caribbean, the retro graphics... they fit together perfectly. You've also got an awesome mechanic with the reloading, and I love that the game has one goal: kill Moby riDickulous.

Unfortunately, losing money when you get hit makes it a bit impossible to afford the nuclear harpoon. Fix that and you've got an awesome, salty game on your hands.

DRAANG by Magdev 2014-04-29T02:32:00

Woah

Drowning in Problems by Notch 2014-04-29T23:23:00

Very neat idea. It didn't resonate too much with me personally, but I can definitely appreciate it. Wasn't sure whether to give you a high score or a low score for Theme; opted to give you a high one because it was an interesting take on the theme.

Super Water RPG by matheod 2014-04-30T00:53:00

Bahaha, clever. Made me laugh.

BULLA by moonmagic 2014-04-28T23:13:00

Hahaha this is so bizarre, I love it. Like something straight out of WarioWare. Finally squishing the monster is so satisfying.

How deep can you dive? by bebopbraunbaer 2014-04-30T14:58:00

Press F5 to try again? Clever girl...

Cool concept!

unllum by hydancer 2014-04-29T20:55:00

Oh wow, this had a really fantastic art style and introduction to its mechanics-- one of the only games that I'd give a 5/5 to in theme. It's a shame it ran so slow, because that made it kind of unplayable. But yeah, fix that, add in some nice sound, and you've got something really amazing.

Hell Hole by TheGreenTie 2014-04-30T01:26:00

Really fun, well put-together game! Great job on the art and sound, and it played well too!

Arctic Antics by Miltage 2014-04-29T23:19:00

Very cool concept! There's not much to it, but it was very fun to control. I think the past few 3D Mario games have proven that we need more ice-skating games.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Orbital Ion Cannon versus Conservation Of Charge by PTSnoop 2015-04-20T19:58:00

Pretty neat little physics game! The mechanics still seem really rough and early, but I bet if you experimented with them more you could find something really cool!

Saucery by mockthebear 2015-04-21T18:38:00

Oh wow, this was an awesome concept. I've always wondered what different sorts of magic systems that people could come up with if they didn't feel the need to have mana. You pretty successfully came up with a skill-based magic system that's based around the player's understanding of how the spells work rather than how much MP they have left. That's awesome.

I say go further with this. Maybe make the tutorial less front-heavy and integrate it into the game more naturally, and change up the colors so that it's easier to tell them apart (red and orange look identical to me, and I'm not even color blind!). But seriously, awesome job, I want a full game like this. Tempted to steal this idea so it's on you to make the game before I do. ;)

Warp Wizard by PizzaPranks 2015-04-22T19:24:00

Really cool idea for a mechanic! I would make it so that you can warp all the way to your cursor's location, rather than just a little bit towards it.

Octopus of Unfathomable Chaos by conno1234 2015-04-20T20:33:00

Roommate: "What's that song?"
Me: "I dunno, what do you mean?"
Roommate: "I've heard that song before."
Me: "Wait... MADWORLD!?"

Beep Boop by CJ K 2015-04-20T19:55:00

Oh wow, this is a really cool mechanic! Really nice minimalistic art and sound that blend really well too.

I'd like for there to be an automatic checkpoint on each screen. Having to go through puzzles you already solved is tedious. I got to the one where you're on a high cliff with a wall of spikes on it before giving up. But I'd be really interested to see this mechanic expanded into a full game, if there's anything more to explore with it!

The Ultimate Weapon by LuisDC 2015-04-20T19:48:00

Really cool art style! The gameplay isn't the most original in the world, but could be a cool concept if you made it into a full game!

When designing your puzzles, try to make it so that there's no way for the player to screw themselves over to the point where they need to restart the game. Puzzle design is tough. :)

Harvest by Andrea 2015-04-20T20:10:00

I dig the art!

Eyes that Fry by Evergreen Games 2015-04-22T19:36:00

Pretty great game! I like that you integrated the directions into the first level so that I could start playing right away. Cool atmosphere, cool idea.

I would make it so that W would let the player jump--feels more natural that way, so that one hand can control the character and the other can control the laser aiming. I would also probably make it so that the laser will kill the enemy whenever it's on screen, rather than when it just first appears, so that enemies who run into it after it's been fired will also die.

BitGun by TajamSoft 2015-04-21T18:49:00

Really great art! You'll want to work a bit on the controls, I think. They feel very slippery. That stuff's easy to tune though, so you've got an awesome foundation. :)

Sound Barrier by conniejoern 2015-04-21T18:29:00

Really love the Game & Watch aesthetic. The band animations are awesome. :)

It's a little slow for a rhythm game--I don't feel like I'm jamming out, I just feel like I'm collecting falling notes. I would say have more notes, make their falling be in sync to the background music's BPM, and have them less spaced apart so that when you hit a button you immediately get a note.

Egg Tooss by Andimea 2015-04-20T20:01:00

The idea of luring enemies away against their will is pretty cool. This still seems very early but there might be something here. :)

LD38 — A Small World

iii by YukonW 2017-05-08T22:07:58Z

Wow! This is awesome! I'm disappointed you're in the Jam and not the Compo, cuz I don't want to have to compete against you AND I wanna see your source code, haha.

The lack of audio is a little disappointing, because the mood would be ON POINT if you had more. And while I really dig the feel of the controls, I'm curious if slower movement would lend itself better to the kind of quiet exploration you're going for? Not sure on that one.

Seriously excellent entry though, best I've played so far.

Space Travel 15 by jk5000 2017-05-08T22:01:50Z

Wow, I really dig the music in this! Nice job!

Catsorbed by IgorsGames 2017-05-08T21:52:47Z

Awesome work! I love how the edge of the world curves up like an actual globe!

A.M.O.R.V. by zondarg 2017-05-03T20:40:37Z

Holy shit those N64 vibes. Nice work!

Enlightenment by XenosNS 2017-05-09T18:34:59Z

I really, REALLY dug this game's vibe! Something about the color usage.

I'd like it if the camera kept zooming out even after you've collected a ton of books, and kept zooming in all the way until you have to restart the level

Great work!

An Ant World by wolar 2017-05-08T00:56:56Z

Woah, I dug this a lot! Really cool game, nice spin on the RTS genre. It's fun watching all the ants run around, haha.

Throw by somethinboutgames 2017-05-03T23:25:38Z

Really cool! I LOVE the background, totally stealing that effect someday haha. Beat every level except for 5.

Apocalypse World Cup by Issac 2017-05-09T18:26:59Z

Wow, this is great! Reminds me of Newgrounds games from back in the day. Nice job!

Small World Collider by tylerraz 2017-05-03T23:11:54Z

Pretty fun goofy game, haha. Neat twist on a classic idea! I'd make it so that the paddles don't accelerate; just have them start and stop moving when you press or release a button.

Planet Hoppers by Snowdrama 2017-05-08T21:45:40Z

Very cool! I'd like it if you could jump with the Up arrow key as well--actually, come to think of it, you could probably take jumping out all together!

Nice job with the gravity!

DEFEND YOUR TINY WORLD! v1.1 by Dragojt 2017-05-03T20:22:39Z

Great job with this! I had fun with it. I think the game would really benefit from having a square aspect ratio so that you never get the situations where they're hidden by the top of the screen. Great art and music!

Planetoid Escape by shockeye 2017-05-03T23:16:56Z

Really nice job with the gravity around a 3D planet! That's hard to pull off, haha. I'd tweak the controls so that A and D make you move left and right, rather than rotating you.

uP-8: Microprocessor by Spaceman 2017-05-08T22:17:22Z

...this is so crazy and awesome that all I can really do is offer up the meta-complaint that I totally don't have time to delve into this right now, haha. I typically only plan on spending like 5 minutes on Ludum Dare games, but I could easily see myself getting hours out of this one because of how amazingly fleshed out it is. Besides, I'm right in the middle of Shenzhen I/O!

Phenomenal work, I think? (Kudos for the Albert Camus shout-out!)

SHAKEDOWN by LancesCaterpie 2017-05-08T20:45:10Z

Amazing artstyle, seriously awesome work. I'm totally gonna pore over that source code to figure out how you did it, haha.

My Small Mind by Icewind 2017-05-08T01:02:01Z

I liked this a lot! I'm not totally sure why haha, just something about the space you created was pleasant to be in.

Momma ZILLA by Sean M 2017-05-08T22:27:56Z

Hey, Pico-8! Nice job! I think I'd swap the Blink and Shoot keys. You're shooting more often than blinking, so have shoot be your index finger!

Great little atmosphere. Nice art and music!

Down the Rabbit Hole by those-30-ninjas 2017-05-09T19:20:00Z

Awesome presentation! Seems like there's a lot of depth to this strategy too, I could see myself putting a lot of time into this, haha.

Diminishing Lands by drazil100 2017-05-03T21:08:34Z

Awesome! Best LD38 game I've played so far, really nice job! Original concept and great presentation. It'd be cool if there was a little more challenge to it, but it's super solid for what it is. Great work.

This is the End: Small World by namrog84 2017-05-03T23:08:45Z

Really really cool game, very cool concept! If you can tweak it some more to make it harder, it'll be awesome--there wasn't really any challenge involved, I just built a ton of Nuclear Plants, haha. Unless that's some sort of commentary on humanity's priorities in the real world...

Seven Pillars by Jeremy Ryan 2017-05-08T22:24:05Z

Hilarious game, bahaha. I'd like if there was an ending. Nice music and art too!

A Tiny Place by grahhhhhhhhh 2017-05-08T00:16:06Z

I kept getting constant Game Overs. Hmmm. Lemme know if you get that fixed and I'll totally try it out again!

RASHLANDER by ryguydavis 2017-05-01T23:33:08Z

Love the programmer art! Nice use of cool effects to spruce up the style.

Honestly, I love everything about this other than the name. RASHlander!?

Still, best LD38 game I've played so far!

Alienus-Alienas by Brainy_Beard 2017-05-03T20:30:35Z

Great work with this! The game has a really nice vibe. I think you're really on to something here--make the movement speed and missile-firing speed way higher and see how that feels. :)

Amoebros by Spinaljack 2017-05-03T21:02:06Z

I do not understand this game at all, but I love it. Thanks for making this, it was really refreshing to play something so original and well-polished, haha.
