LD38 — A Small World

Not Enough Space by mactinite 2017-05-13T19:07:05Z

I only got to play w/ two players. It feels hectic (partly due to the music I think), which I like. It's hard to time throwing the bombs at your opponent, and it's hard to tell when the bombs are going to blow up. Maybe a clearer timer on the bombs would be helpful. It's great to see another local multiplayer entry -- we made one too - check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/apocalypse-world-cup

This Moon is Mine by Togimaro 2017-05-05T22:18:28Z

Awesome style! I love the changing color, the hand-drawn style, the font choice, and the music. It all gels together really well. I wish the color changed to the beat of the music, but it seemed to be just a little off-beat.

The gameplay is simple but fun. My team-mates and I played several rounds. We had a lot of fun, but it seemed like the first player to plant the flag won almost every time.

Overall, very cool!

P.S. We also made a 2-Player Versus game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/apocalypse-world-cup). You should check it out!

A Small World Cup by rujo 2017-05-05T21:55:25Z

Wow, I love this game! It's so much fun -- I've played it for several hours over the past couple days. The AI difficulty is right on point. It took me well over an hour to win the cup the first time, but now I've pretty much mastered it, which is very satisfying.

The pixel filter effect gives the game a unique look that I like. The only downside is that the text gets a little blurry. Also, the slow motion is really nice.

I would love to see a networked multiplayer version of this!

Raven Delivery Service by DDRKirbyISQ 2017-05-13T19:57:02Z

Great music as always! The pixel art is also great.

I played the co-op game; the mechanics remind me of Overcooked, and the teamwork is satisfying and challenging. The simple, wordless tutorials are awesome and the gameplay is intuitive (once the player is taught that the book can make magic blue mushrooms, they can immediately intuit that the book can make magic blue batwings, etc.).

The one missing piece for me is a win condition. I think having a goal number of potions would increase the tension and excitement.

Awesome entry! Btw, we also made a local multiplayer game - check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/apocalypse-world-cup

Space Brawls by jcsirron 2017-05-13T20:31:26Z

I like the concept -- the orbital physics seem pretty solid. It's a little confusing and hard to play though.

It's A Small World And It's Gonna Get Smaller by npizzle1 2017-05-05T22:06:35Z

I like the art, especially the title screen and the UFO animation.

I had trouble figuring out what to do... every time I tried to drop anything into the silo, it died, so I never got my score above zero.

Apocalypse World Cup by Issac 2017-05-13T19:18:39Z

Thank you all for the feedback!

@jason-kennedy Hi! The game is not single-player; it is a local-multiplayer game only. We would love to make an AI for single-player eventually, but we didn't include a single-player mode in the jam version. Please don't judge the game without playing it multiplayer.

Apocalypse World Cup by Issac 2017-05-15T13:07:03Z

@rubyleehs @akirassassin Thanks for playing! We are working on more maps and support for up to four players. Nothing for single-player yet, but hopefully we'll get there.

> Did not realise the world spins together with the ball though, that could have been made clearer in the game.

We thought that might be a problem, but we weren't really sure how to solve it. At first, we had the camera spinning at the same rate as the ball. The spinning was way too fast, and it looked funny like the ball wasn't spinning at all since the camera-spin and ball-spin cancelled each other out. Now the camera spins at 15% of the rate the ball spins and we added camera shake when the ball hits the walls -- that's the best we've come up with so far. Any ideas to improve that to make it clearer what's happening?

Small World Fighters by noddingTortoise 2017-05-13T19:38:49Z

I like the concept and mechanics, especially the Control game mode. The jump is stiff, and it is hard to dodge shots. We ended up just mashing the shoot button for the most part.

The graphics, especially the earth, sun, and moon, and the rotating horizon are all very cool.

I love to see local multiplayer games in Ludum Dare -- we made one too (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/apocalypse-world-cup) -- you should check it out!

From robots with love by Guillaume Voisinet 2017-05-13T20:29:15Z

Really great concept w/ a light-hearted mood! The graphics and audio match the game perfectly.

It's nearly impossible to grab the snow globe if the player holding it moves and rotates it enough.

Interesting and funny entry! We also made a local multiplayer game - check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/apocalypse-world-cup

Spike Spire by Acuity 2017-05-14T02:45:39Z

The music is cool. The difficulty is tough but fair up until the drop down the middle of the screen, which is a bit too hard imo. It would probably feel more fair if there was a checkpoint before it. Actually, that particular drop reminds me of a section in VVVVVV, but that drop in VVVVVV is right at the end of the game (and optional I think).

Overall, I like the level design; it's just a bit too hard too fast I think. Also, the character placeholder art gave me a chuckle. Cool entry.

Spike Spire by Acuity 2017-05-14T02:45:39Z

Oops... I double posted, and I don't know how to delete it. Sorry

Moon Eat Moon by brandann 2017-05-05T23:58:15Z

The flavor text is funny - I kept glancing at it after every thing I consumed. Actually, I wish it was a little bigger or popped up above the player's head so I didn't have to glance away from the action.

The music is nice, and the gameplay is simple but smooth.

The Land We Must Take (La Terre qu'il nous faut conquérir) by kavehes 2017-05-13T18:49:34Z

The tiled world and the orbiting tiled moon look great. I love the concept of a strategy game on a globe rather than a flat map. (On the other hand, using a globe makes a little hard to see what is going on sometimes. Maybe a flat map mini-map would be nice?)

I also really like the mechanic of needing to exploit the land to grow in the early game, but needing to switch to factory production in the late game when land area is reduced. The opportunities for player interaction in building placement feel natural and interesting (looping off tracts of land to exploit them for yourself, surrounding your opponent to limit their growth, etc.).

The UI/UX is a little underwhelming and hard to use/understand. I didn't understand what a factory did until after I built my first factory... and I wouldn't have built it if I did. I still don't really understand the concept of invading terrain. Also, the sound fx are a bit grating.

All in all, the mechanics have the makings of a really cool strategy game. It seems to work especially well for two players. It just needs polish, especially in the presentation.

We also made a local multiplayer game - check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/apocalypse-world-cup

A Bombtastic World by dennyrocketdev 2017-05-06T00:15:02Z

The design is really polished here, given how simple the assets are. The cone to indicate which direction the player is facing is helpful. The animations of the blocks and explosions and accompanying sounds are satisfying. The designs of the floor tiles match their purposes, and help the player intuit what they do. The puzzle difficulty was good and had a good progression -- I didn't solve them immediately, but I never got frustrated.

I was a little confused when the game looped at the end. I thought that maybe it was a bug, or I had messed something up. Also, I didn't get how this connected to the theme much.

Cool game, and I think it could be very good if fleshed out with more levels and more detailed assets. There's some excellent puzzle and UI design in here.

RASHLANDER by ryguydavis 2017-05-05T22:02:17Z

It's very challenging, but it captures and amplifies the feeling of the Atari Lunar Lander game. The visuals are great.

⬛️ by secret-tunnel 2017-05-05T21:48:32Z

It's a simple idea with great execution. I really like the audio. Playing it stressed me out a little though!

Ain't Big Enough by gustavo.christino 2017-05-13T19:27:09Z

I love local multiplayer games! The graphics and sound are solid. The concept is cool and fits the them well, especially the bullets travelling all the way around the world.

I agree w/ the commenter above me; I didn't like not being able to jump and move at the same time. I found it to be too difficult to dodge the bullets.

High Noon Robots by RoxXx88 2017-05-13T18:59:19Z

Very fun, I love split-screen multiplayer games! I wish that the camera would turn rather than the player character turning - you can't really see where you're shooting when the character is facing the bottom of the screen.

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Goal and Crossbones by SkullPixel 2018-04-27T01:58:49Z

Great look, concept, and execution -- my favorite entry yet. I'd like to see a multiplayer version of this too.

One small complaint -- the music restarting after every level gets a little grating. The track sounds pretty cool, but listening to the same five seconds of it over and over is not so cool.

Golf N' Grenades by Imphenzia 2018-04-24T17:17:00Z

Awesome  We made a game with a very similar take on the theme - [Golf with Guns](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/untitled-fpsg).

The presentation is great -- cool low-poly art style and I love the day-night cycle. It could be interesting if the day-night cycle had some mechanical impact, like increasing the zombie spawn rate or something.

I just wish the golfer was faster and he could strafe. I wanted to kill zombies with grenades, but my aim was so poor it seemed more effective to run away from them most of the time

Golf War by ted 2018-04-28T03:26:33Z

I like this! The controls are tight, both for fighting and golfing. Forcing the player to drop the ball where they get knocked down is an elegant way to combine the brawling w/ golf.

I wish that the clubs had some indicator of about how far they hit the ball -- I had to go through some trial-and-error to figure out how hard to swing to avoid the water hazards.

Cool entry

We also made a golf game if you want to check it out - [Golf with Guns](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/untitled-fpsg)

Succulent Drive USA by uvwar 2018-04-27T02:25:57Z

Nice graphics and concept. With some more polish, camera controls, and good music, this could be a cool meditative experience.

Golf with Guns by Issac 2018-04-24T14:30:52Z

@XxSuperDeathMasterXx Sorry about that -- we were too tired last night to get more than the Windows version up. I just put up downloads for MacOS and Linux. I wasn't able to test them, so please let us know if they work.

Golf with Guns by Issac 2018-04-28T15:51:57Z

@Dovakla Thanks for the feedback!

We thought about just resetting the ball to its last safe location, but that caused a problem -- in the multiball waves, the player could just focus on one ball at a time, leaving the other balls to get knocked around by the zombies with no real consequence. So then the challenge of the multiball waves was lost.

Maybe all of the balls could be reset back one shot instead (i.e. back to the spot they were putt in from if they're in the hole), but that feels a little fiddly to me.

Also, if we continue this project (and right now we intend to ), the early holes will likely be more forgiving (less water, etc.).

Ace Golf: Blade Brawlers by elHombreBanana 2018-04-27T01:14:51Z

Cool! The art and music are great -- the aesthetic reminds me a lot of Jet Set Radio.

Full five-on-five multiplayer w/ some more polish/mechanics and different characters w/ abilities... you could have an awesome golf MOBA! Something I'd like to play

Also, we made a golf game too - [Golf with Guns](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/untitled-fpsg)

Alien Holes by bazld 2018-04-26T19:47:08Z

Nice! I got to 12 score and up to 5 minutes, and then stopped when I realized that could go on forever. Maybe some sort of escalating challenge (faster timer, less time back on the clock for each successive hole-in, etc.) would be good. Also, the camera controls stressed me out a little.

I like the environment a lot. It's simple but really does feel alien.

We made a game with a very similar concept/controls -- [Golf with Guns](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/untitled-fpsg)

Golf Rush by Ever 2018-04-30T22:06:46Z

The pixel art and animation is fantastic! I love the details on the main character, esp. how his tail waggles a bit as he walks. Also, the controls have excellent weight to them. Holding the spacebar to jump higher, plus the screenshake on big jumps and landings really makes you feel like a beast walking around the course.

Ball/hole indicators would be helpful. I didn't want to have to search around the level for the hole, or the ball when I lost it, which happened a few times. An easier way to aim would be helpful too. Holding alt for the power meter feels nice, but I wanted some way to aim high/low instead of just weak/strong.

Overall, this could use some polish on the golfing mechanics, but it's really satisfying to just walk/jump around and swing your club and blow stuff up. Nice entry!

Definition of a Ghuest by Sand-Gardeners 2018-04-27T01:01:05Z

Best interpretation of the theme I've seen yet. Eerie and thoughtful.

Shadowscape by Gonz0 2018-04-27T00:37:51Z

I would like to play this but get a "Failed to load mono" error when opening the .exe.

SmashyStuff by BenViss 2018-04-26T19:24:54Z

The music is great! I like the voxel style and smashing stuff up but wish the main character (Godzilla?) would grow faster

We made a very similar game for LD33 - http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-33/?action=preview&uid=52817

Welcome to Snake Academy! by Sintel 2018-04-24T15:17:06Z

Great effect seeing the pellets pass through the snake when they're eaten

Pinball Golf by chronofeed 2018-04-27T13:46:39Z

This is a cool idea -- golf and pinball make an elegant combination. The end result is nice and relaxing.

Noticing other commenters mention the physics, you could add a bit of gravity to the ball to make the physics feel more realistic.

Flong! by Mil 2018-04-27T00:12:52Z

Good concept and good execution. I think it would be nice if the bird sped up after a while -- some of the points dragged on a bit. If you had two really good players, they could go on forever

Don't miss the Bus by raphimulator 2018-04-26T19:03:28Z

I like the idea of stringing together these mini-games to tell a story. "Get Breakfast" was my favorite

It would be cool to see something like this with a branching story for success/failure.

STEREOtype by caeonosphere 2018-04-27T02:16:07Z

I love rhythm games and I love this! It's fun and really polished. A couple things that I think would be nice: * adjustable input delay / calibration * an extra visual cue to know when the beats are coming up -- something like a measure with the beats drawn on it and a vertical line scrolling along it (Sometimes I had trouble comprehending the rhythm before the section started. Maybe that's meant to be part of the challenge though?)

Great work!

Chalk Racer! by PSiv 2018-04-24T15:05:56Z

Cool idea and pretty fun  I like that everything (race track, UI, etc.) looks like chalk.

I had trouble looking back and forth between the race track and the arithmetic and making sure to click on the right spot. I'd like it better if there were shortcut keys to pick the right answer, or if you could just key in the right answer on the keypad. That way I could focus more on racing and arithmetic, and less on mouse placement.

the World Deck by Victrola Sage 2018-04-24T13:37:52Z

Cool idea. The controls feel a bit difficult -- I think it's because you can't change direction until you reach the top of your jump.
