Good work, nice punchy tune and cute graphics! I would have liked to have seen some more particle fx, especially on the blink to help lead the eye, and to help indicate when one of your baby zillas die. Nice work for your first jam!
This is a really awesome arcade / addictive game. The music sounds good, the graphics looks cute, the gameplay is fun. I enjoy this game, but I think it should be cool if there was a way to heal mommaZilla a little bit, or maybe I missed something?
Lovely arcade-like game. Nice work!
@fouralex you should be able to heal by walking over the little pixels that come from the destroyed buildings
Very enjoyable and well executed. I was getting a bit overzealous with the blink and it backfired a lot haha.
Nice work. I liked the blink feature, but kept getting all my babies killed! Very cute retro graphics and nice simple but catchy music. Nicely done.
Check out our game, [E.(a)T.](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/e-at) if you have a few moments. Thanks very much .
It's always cool to be the monster destroying cities. The retro feel is really good and reach to my arcade memories. If I had to point something negative, I would say the background variation is a little boring visually. Some more color or different stuff to destroy, like monuments or giant robots would be cool.
I'm good at your game! humanity.png
Loved these graphics and the Moma Zilla childs are kind of cute. (I don't know why sometimes they disappear though).
Congrats!
@steve Good point! I gotta learn me up on some good particle fx for this sort of thing. Thanks :)
@aumbra thanks for the feedback! Yeah that's why I like the blink feature over some of the other mechanics I tried, it can get you in an out of trouble and you gotta learn it a bit before you get really good at it :)
@brotherst thanks for the feedback :) I'll check out your game tonight after work
@nilead Thanks for the feedback! I totally agree, it would be pretty sweet to have some kind of scrolling background with some more illustration to better set the mood. I hope to incorporate that feedback in oncoming versions :)
@camilo Nice! One thing to note is that Zilla kids are susceptible to missiles as well, so that's why they were disappearing. I think i need to add more particle fx and things to make it more clear of an indication when a Zilla child crashes into a missle
I punished humanity! :D
The blink control is a bit confusing, but other than that, I really liked it. The little baby zillas are a nice touch.
Nice game. It's pretty fun once you get a hang of the blink mechanic. I like the idea of collecting babies to cause more destruction. The pixel style looks very nice and the music is good too - though it can a bit repetitive.
The one big issue I encountered is that I got stuck off the left side of the screen multiple times. It would be nice if this could be fixed somehow.
My score was 4534.
@veralos thanks for the feedback! Yeah I'm not so great at making music and I'm hoping to improve. I've found a lot of inspiration from many of the games here already :)
As for getting stuck, I think it might be a mechanic of the buildings, they're supposed to 'get in your way' and push you towards the fires which damage you, but I'm thinking I want to get rid of that (and maybe the health concept altogether), in favor of focusing on the game concept of destroying as much as possible, since that seems to be more fun :)
Thanks!
Nice game! Music is descent for LD (better than none :) ) and graphics are pretty good. Gameplay isnt super exciting but it was still fun. Good work!
Ya charmed me with that title screen right out the gate. :P Way to establish a solid mood almost immediately.
As for the game itself, it's fun, if a little simplistic. It was kind of hard for me to determine where I would end up if I blinked (and more often than not, I'd end up stuck in a building), so I didn't use it too much. I felt as though I could get by just fine by mashing the shoot button and moving around.
I would love to see Mama Zilla get a few more abilities that maximize her destructive capabilities. :) That might add a lot to the variety and overall fun-ness of the gameplay! Maybe even some little army dudes on the top of some buildings shooting at her for minimal damage to incentivize her to move to other parts of the screen too...
You've got a lot of places to go from here, and you have a solid foundation to start you off, nice job!
I Played this on Livestream a bit ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwY1-PtcDqs
I had a very weird bug partway thru one of my runs. I think the game could use some Variety, but otherwise a very solid pico game.
Cute art style! Your chip music soundtrack fits the gameplay well. Controls work as I'd expect. Do the baby dinos sort of function like the Option in the Gradius series? Do they fall off or behind so quickly b/c they're getting shot or hit by something? I couldn't figure that part out. Still, it's really cute (in a good way) and a fun bite sized game - especially for your first jam! Nice work :)
The babyzillas were pretty eager to eat missiles...
Simple and competent. A bit too easy really. Would have liked the Mommazilla to have less HP, or the missiles to deal more damage. Healing is so effective that challenge goes out to window at the same time.
Pretty ok this.
I loved the mood of your game! Felt like an actual arcade game . Gameplay is fun but simple, I like the addition of the little Kid-Zillas. Only suggestion I can think of is more levels/variation, which is stuff you can add later (you only had 3 days after all :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:). Nice work!
Cute little game! I love the whole super retro aesthetic. The game felt really nice to play. I had a few rounds ;) Congrats on your first ever jam entry!
fun arcade, could do with a bit more variation, also liked the mini zillas. congrats on your first jam, solid effort.
Why must you cause me sorrow by having all my babies die so often :(
Good concept, I've made a dino city destruction game myself in the past and you can never go wrong with that theme. Like others have said, it's a bit easy, but a simple fix would be to have the missiles/buildings ramp up, but somehow have your babies live longer so you can form an army. That way you can change up the gameplay by having increasing powers, while facing deadlier challenges that offset the increase. Thanks for the game.
Hey, Pico-8! Nice job! I think I'd swap the Blink and Shoot keys. You're shooting more often than blinking, so have shoot be your index finger!
Great little atmosphere. Nice art and music!
Fellow kaiju friend!!! Cool concept, pretty fun gameplay but I think maybe some of the basic mechanics could use some tweaking - the movespeed felt pretty slow for what is essentially a horizontal shmup. Blink is a nice addition but feels more like compensation for being slow rather than a useful mechanic on its own. I did like the babies-as-powerup mechanic though, it was a nice challenge to try to keep them alive and get rewarded for it as well. My high score was 5346. Nice work!
This is great! Fairly simple mechanics, but there's a lot to learn in there. I like the smaller monsters you can pick up and the mix of obstacles and missiles. The art style and music is also really fun!
I *did* have some trouble, however, with some areas. The blink move is hard to get the hang of because it requires both the X key and a direction. Also, the hitbox on the main character is sort of weird, since the bullets come out of the top half of it.
All in all, though, this is a really solid effort. Good job!
Cute little game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ9fOEQeXAs
