LD38 — A Small World

The Village by Gipzo 2017-05-10T20:52:06Z

A nice little game. I would have liked more of an ending, or something, and I never even got close to people being aggressive – gold showers solved everything. Eventually it was all updated and I said, "oh... it's over?" Good experience during play.

Fraser Island by dollarone 2017-05-19T17:51:02Z

I tried this out with coworkers. I thought it was a pretty cool bluffing game. For my personal taste, it felt a little bit too luck-based. Like a few times someone had something incredibly valuable in their top 3 stack simply through the luck of the draw and then lost the game or a lot of points due to a reveal. Other times it felt like I was playing pretty blind, and not a lot of calling out would happen, which would end up with it being almost entirely random chance who won. I really like where you're going with this, though. I think a little more skill and a little less luck could go a long way.

Small Town Mines by M2tias 2017-05-19T23:55:03Z

Cute little game. Good feel to it and cool mechanics. I wasn't clear on what was increasing the suspicion, or what would end the game.

Abyss by srakowski 2017-05-13T07:35:12Z

This is cool, I think you're close to a good game. It's fun just flying around gathering stuff and upgrading. If there were encounters, artifacts and stuff like that find, etc. you could have a really cool game.

For Eternity by holgk 2017-05-10T20:11:46Z

Very cool game. I think you got the micromanaging resource feel down. Cool. I was getting pretty into it but then suddenly all my people moved out and my income went way down. I built like 6 temples and it didn't seem to help. This reminded me a lot of Sim Tower in that way – I really loved that game at first but inevitably everyone would move out at some point and stuff would grind to a halt, and I'd never understand why. I think a better in-game tutorial might help, and a more specific explanation of mechanics on your help page. I thought the mechanics were simple (increase QoL with helpful buildings, decrease it with more houses) but I never understood how resources affected things.

Angelic Design by Joror 2017-05-10T21:16:10Z

Cool idea. I made it to the 1000th year, and only figured out what I was doing by about year 800. Then I lost on the final mission... I could maybe have done it but didn't feel like min/maxing stats to make it work out. I like the idea of the missions but the way they are implemented feels a little tedious, and it's kind of a bummer to have no idea what you're aiming for until the end. I'd rather have missions come up as I play, and be told what the next mission is so I can plan for it. That way I would actually use the curse etc commands to get rid of undesirable traits.

Exoman by Rother Games 2017-05-09T17:24:16Z

Nice, another Rampage-style game (mine is also). Unfortunately I don't have a Windows machine so can't play, but the screenshots and concept look great.

Enlightenment by XenosNS 2017-05-10T21:52:56Z

Interesting game. I thought it was cool that you have both life and also visibility. My main issue there was dumb luck, even with full visibility, would cause me to go down a dead end and I'd completely run out of visibility on the way back. Not sure how you'd change that, but it was kind of an issue.

Low Orbit by quadtree 2017-05-09T17:22:41Z

A great amount of work in here. I think it's very impressive that you created so many different tracks and planets, and made a cohesive game too. Good stuff! However, as others have said, there are some pretty major issues with how it plays. For me, there were ugly red lights covering most of the screen the whole time (Mac OS X Chrome), which I assume was a bug. Worse, when I made it to the first checkpoint, it didn't seem to acknowledge that I had done so, and told me to backtrack. From then on, reaching checkpoints did nothing and I never saw any other cars.

OLDDOG by wischutz 2017-05-10T21:44:01Z

Nifty game. I think it's a cool idea to put in a circular brawler, and I liked the weird mood that you were putting in place. I would have maybe avoided making the screen short out unless you yourself were getting hit, because it was confusing otherwise. I think the fighting mechanics are the main area you should work on improving – as a previous commenter mentioned, it mostly felt like I was mashing the regular attack button while I waited for the charge attack to recharge, and the shield didn't seem to have value. In fighting games and brawlers I usually have fun with the rock/paper/scissors type mechanics – that is, notice one enemy telegraphing a certain move and counter it with the right option. Seems like you were almost there, but since the enemies all attack the same way with no warning, it's not possible to play "well." Great work!

Pity About Earth... by mwcz 2017-05-10T20:58:30Z

Top marks, well done. Easy to control and get into, felt challenging but not random, excellent work. I can't find much to complain about on this one. Although reality-based me was boggled at the incredible cost of making such a huge controllable barrier! That's a lot of titanium!

Shelton's Detour by Dining Philosopher 2017-05-09T17:02:51Z

Cool idea, I like how you wrapped the world in a ball. Nice visual effect.

The platforming itself leaves much to be desired. It's super simple, the temperature mechanic doesn't feel like it does a whole lot, and the game really really needs checkpoints. You start with it being really difficult really quickly, especially given some art cues are off (the cactus blocks look extremely close to regular platforms, for example). I think a post-compo version of this game where you spend more time tuning could be really great.

Gnome Digger by bobsleigh 2017-05-12T19:08:13Z

Unfortunately it hangs on Mac OS X Sierra. I don't see anything in the console that looks relevant.

Caelium Alpha by jishenaz 2017-05-09T17:12:02Z

As someone who is a bit of an orrery connoisseur and who has made one myself, I thought it was cool to see someone make one, but the lack of gravity and real physics made this uninteresting to me. In my mind, the point of an orrery is to mess with the what the universe would really be like – a legitimate sandbox, as opposed to simply a diorama, which is what this felt like.

DNAPet by Yirggzmb 2017-04-24T18:22:25Z

Cute! A funny idea to combine all those different types of creatures.

A couple notes: - Incubation takes too long. Clicking the meter back and forth gets boring. - I wasn't always clear exactly what I should be doing with my creature. More visual feedback of its wants and needs would be helpful.

Nice work!

Big Cell by Ethan Kennerly 2017-04-24T19:49:43Z

Cool game! I love agario, this has that feel. Unfortunately, there weren't any other players online. I like that you have AI to fill in the gaps, which is great, but they're not smart enough to pose a challenge.

6 degrees of separation by Shivur 2017-05-12T22:49:06Z

I was unclear on what I should actually be doing. It seemed like every dot I clicked reset the people I knew, instead of making some kind of web, and it was unclear what a fully completely versus incomplete web would look like. So I just clicked around that was mostly it.

Small Atomic World War by Kroute 2017-04-24T15:35:36Z

Looks like your Mac link takes me to a Windows or maybe Linux build. I'd expect to see a .app. If this is Unity, you should do a WebGL build too.

It Seemed so big... by lozzadawg 2017-05-10T19:22:23Z

I think this has a lot of potential. I like the idea of managing a lot of different planets and resources and things. I could never figure out how to make technology, or why I would ever take resources from the planets (what do I do with them?). Seems like it's the start of a great game but not there yet.

NES ROM - Arlington Apple in an Interplanetary Pickle by team-disposable 2017-05-10T21:24:02Z

Wow, I'm amazed you made a ROM. No idea what the tools are like these days, but doesn't this mean that you bad to make everything in assembly? Nuts. The game itself I thought was very good for an NES game, but for a modern game it wasn't as impressive. Still solid, for sure. There were a couple times where I got completely stuck in an area and didn't feel like I could get out, and the screen transitions felt jarring and made it difficult to platform. I would have also rather had the controls be relative to my character's facing rather than absolute on the screen - that really made it difficult to do tricky stuff. The level design is really smart and cool.

Cell Wars by pjnovas 2017-05-18T23:04:45Z

Cool, good job overall. I wish new clusters hadn't been able to come back after wiping them out. Felt a lot less successful as a result.

All The Way Down by luthwyhn 2017-05-19T23:47:34Z

I think you've got the start of a nifty game. Don't worry so much about completing less than you wanted! The game was totally playable and understandable without instruction, which is a feat in itself. Turtles eat squid, so it's good. Sharks eat turtles, so it's bad. True the game is just a little bare at this point, and movement could be smoother (visually) and a few other things, but I think it's a good shot.

Jumpy Green by markusfisch 2017-05-09T17:15:58Z

Maybe I suck but I had a hard time getting into it, it felt too hard too quickly. My options seemed limited once an astronaut landed nearby. I think I might have removed lasers – it's hard enough just to dodge the astronauts themselves. I like where you're going with this, though. The art is cute.

slovenly shopper by jelch 2017-05-12T19:24:41Z

Nicely done! Great and complete little game, and your use of the theme is great.

Mind's Eye by Kosmo 2017-05-20T00:01:33Z

Great concept, and well executed. This is a good one.

Giant Steps by Lennart Jansson 2017-05-10T21:34:36Z

Very pretty and overall well made. I think it's also a smart and relatively unique puzzle game concept. However, I had a really hard time with the controls – I think using the mouse would have been a better choice.

Terrartisan by ladybenko 2017-05-13T07:39:38Z

Great little game. Very simple but fun.

World Battles by Thinkofname 2017-05-12T21:21:26Z

I really like the idea of this game. The building around the planet and all that is really cool, and it felt like it took the cooler parts of tower defense and made it more interactive (one of my frequent complaints of conventional tower defense is the build and wait). However, I felt that the actual shooting parts lasted too long and wasn't particularly exciting. The building is the shining star here, but is maybe 10% of total time spent with the game. Tuning that balance would really help. And it's cool you made this in Rust!

The Life Amoebic by Baby Dino Herd 2017-05-09T00:48:24Z

Pretty good game. I thought it was nice that you tried out a new mechanic, which felt pretty good. I got bored reasonably quickly though – it was a little slow-moving and there wasn't a lot changing over time.

Match the Fleas by DaisyChubb 2017-05-19T23:49:58Z

Cool take on memory. Super cute. The game couldn't end for me because there was no match for someone. Poor lil' guy. :'-(

AstroCats by kipelovets 2017-05-12T22:52:03Z

Pretty nifty, I played a couple games. I think it's a clever idea and could be a ton of fun. As it stands, though, the controls don't feel punchy enough (movement around the planet, for example, felt very slow) so I didn't feel like I could win via skill and mastery. I would love to see a game like this fully polished, though!

Tiny Planet by Matt Fabius 2017-05-12T21:24:41Z

Alas, I get a crash whenever I try to move the player that's within the fence at all. I wasn't able to make any reasonable progress.

Kanjo by Kataware 2017-05-12T19:18:09Z

Quite a big story for a game jam! Feels a lot like a visual novel. The music is excellent, and you did a great job establishing mood. The gameplay is pretty nonexistent as I would expect with this kind of game, but I still was hoping to do more than I was able to. I think having more to pay attention to and interact with while the story is being told would really help. I didn't feel particularly like I was part of the story as a player.

Globe Guzzler by Eli Delventhal 2017-04-24T00:25:50Z

If someone can teach me how to get image embeds to actually work (usual markdown is failing), I'll pop some images in there. I'll also add an Android build soon.

Globe Guzzler by Eli Delventhal 2017-04-24T15:24:16Z

Thanks @lozzadawg! I agree, that is definitely an issue for me too. When you're going for a new high score and the planets whiz by, it can get annoying. I'll fix it in a post-compo! Trouble is you don't get enough playtests in until after the contest is over. :-)

Globe Guzzler by Eli Delventhal 2017-05-09T00:40:50Z

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Diminishing Lands by drazil100 2017-05-10T21:29:55Z

Very well done. Solid mechanics, nice wall jumping, and a cool and simple but well-executed idea. My one complaint is that I would have maybe liked the coins to slowly fall over time – late game it's impossible to reach high coins, which means the only viable strategy is to start high at first, then make your way down. This isn't obvious on your first play through, and feels overly punishing if you're playing well.

Theatre Throw-Down by Ratbag 2017-05-10T19:28:39Z

I made it to round 6. My success seemed to depend a lot on whether or not I started with a block to hide behind – I could abuse the pathfinding to force the enemies to be stick, at which point I could hit them around the corner. I think you made smart choices with how you dealt with the fighting in a limited time – the player's attack having more range than the enemies, but having a cool down, is a good option. After I figure that out, I was actually strategizing to avoid attacks and hit properly, which is very good for this sort of game. If you work on this further, I think a certain amount of sticky skill-based juice factor is missing. I didn't feel rewarded for playing as well as possible, I mainly felt like I was abusing the system. Relying more on timing I think would really help help – maybe if I can see the enemies winding up, I can choose to parry, and stuff like that. Good work.

Cell Defender by Kreur 2017-05-13T07:05:14Z

It's cool where you're going with this, but I had a really difficult time playing. I even got surrounded by my own white blood cells and couldn't move!

To Kill a Planetingbird by djfurbal 2017-04-24T15:32:56Z

Any chance for a Mac or web build?

Small Tactics by JanGamesDev 2017-05-12T21:00:51Z

I imagine this would be pretty fun with 2 players. I wasn't clear in the 1-player version what I was supposed to do, exactly. Monsters appeared and I killed them. :-) Eventually I stopped playing. Seems like it's got good core nuggets, though.

Meteor Mania by Selgeron 2017-05-09T16:58:03Z

Quite a fun little game. I agree with previous comments – it doesn't really add anything new to the table. However, you did a good job with what you were pursuing. I think it could have been taken much farther, mainly in the area of weapon upgrades (something like 5 different levels instead of 2 would have been great) and balance (oftentimes planets would be unblockable or would appear before I had any chance to shoot), and give me a choice of picking up upgrades (since they would often wipe out a better, "advanced" version of an upgrade).

Quantum World by Paul Nadan 2017-05-13T06:43:06Z

I'm not sure if it was broken or something but ALL controls were inverted, which drove me crazy and I could barely play. :-/

I'm Deity by PixelSplash 2017-04-24T15:33:47Z

Any chance for a Mac or web version?

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

M - (name is too short) by WetDesertRock 2017-12-08T04:11:48Z

Hmm, on Mac I get what looks like a title screen with some toast on it and then it never goes away. :-/

Remembag by Satyre 2017-12-15T23:59:21Z

Very pretty, fun game too! Nice memory span game. I got to the last room (or almost, it was the ninth item) and there were monitors everywhere showing me where I was looking but the door had nothing useful on it. I guessed and lost. That made me pretty irritated after spending 12 minutes mostly navigating around picking up the same items over and over. I just wanted to see the end. The throwing into the box could sometimes be an issue as well, where stuff would repeatedly bounce out.

Yard Time by tangiblegames 2017-12-11T21:32:26Z

Well-implemented and polished. I thought it was a bit unclear how things were functioning under the hood – why they would think "Escape" and what it would actually do. Targeting other prisoners, as others have mentioned, would have helped a lot as well. And final note... it was kind of offensive. And I don't get offended easily. I guess I'm a bit sensitive right now with the current political climate. The idea of prisoners being forced to murder each other based on race just wasn't a funny to me. :-(

Yard Time by tangiblegames 2017-12-11T22:41:19Z

@tangiblegames Good points. I don't think you guys are terrible or anything, I just didn't find this particular black comedy very funny. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

Chick Magnet by one-seed-fruit 2017-12-08T03:36:42Z

This is cute, funny game name and concept. I couldn't ever get an egg, though. It was never clear why an egg would follow me or wouldn't.

Deadly Diver by Ethan Kennerly 2017-12-04T22:52:33Z

Excellent work! Really pretty. Feels like a simpler ridiculous fishing. I got a perfect score! I think this needs a restart button for when you're screwed.

Deadly Diver by Ethan Kennerly 2017-12-05T00:39:00Z

PS a perfect score is 55,500. :-)

Wormhead by elemel 2017-12-11T22:33:06Z

I had a really hard time aiming just because the shots don't seem to use my relative velocity, really. A shame, because the snake idea was pretty cool.

Wormhead by elemel 2017-12-12T02:03:31Z

@elemel Gave it another shot, you may be right it's just the particles. Or maybe I actually DON'T want it to match velocity. Either way the shots feel a little weird and a little out of control and I'm unfortunately not sure why.

A Space Hitchhiking Game by mikethewayne 2017-12-15T23:39:51Z

This is totally a game I would buy if it was complete. I don't think it's the best game jam game, though. It's just so complicated! And the pace is extremely slow (I'm just leaving it running right now as I try to get to the nearest planet over several minutes). But man the concept is great, and there's a really impressive amount of systems in here.

The Harsh Life of Terry the Homeless Dude by lautregars 2017-12-08T03:43:53Z

Pretty funny game! I think you did a great job keeping it simple so that you could complete a game. I wanted more explanation as to what was good to pick up and what was bad to pick up, if anything, and it felt mostly like random chance what I would pick up since I was blindly running right. But I like what you've done here!

Money Laundering Simulator by candlesan 2017-12-11T22:39:01Z

Nice work with the simple mechanics. Had good branching paths of what I could do and escalation of difficulty. I eventually lost just because I wasn't paying attention, derp! Since you're taking inspiration from Agricola, maybe having more a VP-style system would be good, so a single cock-up would just add like a Begging Card as opposed to making me lose immediately.

Tony Hawk's Hatchback Stunt Simulator: Ghost Protocol by Eli Delventhal 2017-12-05T20:58:49Z

@nander and @damoy not sure what the deal was, maybe try again. Seems to work fine for me.

Tony Hawk's Hatchback Stunt Simulator: Ghost Protocol by Eli Delventhal 2017-12-05T23:07:26Z

I wanted to post a review that a coworker made, because it's hilarious. "I found the Tank, and now my mission is at an end. The all-encompassing militarization of the territory is complete. What was once an unassuming city has been transformed into a tank-strewn hellscape, its sole remaining hulking inhabitants forever doomed to thrash about in a scant few fleeting moments until their deaths. Constant, inexorable death. The city's chokepoints are congested to the point of being effectively unable to welcome new matter without condemning it to immediate immolation. The ubiquitous music, once meant to inspire levity, has devolved into an ironic soundtrack of despair, its lilting tones scarcely audible against an unholy cacophony of explosions and grinding metal. God has forgotten this place. I am become death."

Tony Hawk's Hatchback Stunt Simulator: Ghost Protocol by Eli Delventhal 2017-12-06T02:23:59Z

Tony Hawk's Hatchback Stunt Simulator: Ghost Protocol by Eli Delventhal 2017-12-23T17:45:05Z

@SecretPocketCat Thanks for the feedback! Totally good point about the camera. In a post-LD, I made it totally automatic, but it still kinda sucks. If you have any implementation suggestions on how to make a camera feel good in a game as zany as this, I'd love to hear it. I'm not the most experienced with 3D games, so spent way too long on even this bad of a camera.

Tony Hawk's Hatchback Stunt Simulator: Ghost Protocol by Eli Delventhal 2017-12-23T17:47:42Z

@sgadrat Thanks for the feedback! Agreed, the trick system is super gameable right now. We noticed the best way to make a high score (easily) is to get on a tall building and then breakdance. It scores you periodically for being high in the air and also for the spins. In our debug games we got hundreds of thousands of points doing so. If we build the game out more this will definitely be a point for improvement.

Chuckles, the Word Juggler by SecretPocketCat 2017-12-12T02:22:10Z

Was pretty good! I found it fun to just keep typing. I wish the difficulty ramp was better for advanced typists like me: I never had any challenge until I had done over 100 words, and I only lost because I didn't hit a letter on my keyboard hard enough – by the time I deleted out the following letters, 3 in a row hit the bottom. Didn't feel like I lost because I was bad but just because of an input mistake after like 5+ minutes. Also, sometimes I'd have long words that had unusual letter combos ("Brooklyn" for example) and then have stupidly short stuff immediately afterwards ("R" or "CV"). Fun overall!

Chuckles, the Word Juggler by SecretPocketCat 2017-12-20T19:09:38Z

@SecretPocketCat – I was more saying that something like hitting delete once removing all the letters (instead of just one at a time) would be a a good solution, or something similar. Typing a long word like "celebration" and hammering it out quickly but not hitting the "c" (ending with "elebration") means I'm screwed because it takes too long to delete the previous letters. Pretty much I'd like the power to be able to correct after a mistake, and for this particular kind of mistake that isn't possible.

Chuckles, the Word Juggler by SecretPocketCat 2017-12-21T05:15:01Z

@SecretPocketCat I guess you win, then. ;-)

Extreme Whiski Slalom by bigbazwa 2017-12-08T05:43:32Z

Great work! Love the sendoff from that old ski game. I wish the drunkard would have done insane tricks or something instead of just giving a score multiplier. I also would have preferred that the steering be relative to the character rather than the screen – that confused me the whole time.

Evil Wizard by Chirichirichiri 2017-12-14T20:41:54Z

Cool game! You're right that it's very hard. I followed your advice and got the flowers first, which helped, but some way to heal seems ideal. Also, there is a bug where the step after an enemy dies they can still hit you. Would also be nice to turn around without moving.

Chaos Dart by Elodeon 2017-12-08T04:30:11Z

Pretty nice. Cool idea to have all these powerups and then enemy additions. I think the shooting powerup was too good, and being able to wrap around the map when the enemies couldn't do the same was pretty overpowered. As a result I never got hit, so the pressure didn't feel quite high enough for this style of game.

The Cult of Refrigodrator by mochakingup 2017-12-08T04:38:19Z

The art and visual delivery / mood of this are the real winners. Well done there. I think the gameplay could be tuned – I never really felt like I was in control and stuff was happening a little too quickly. Accidentally hitting my followers when I tried to do much of anything was a major issue. Maybe a toggle for friendly fire?

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Sacrizism by Erkberg 2018-12-19T22:26:53Z

Good game! Nice twin stick, pretty fun. I really like your twist where once you "lose" it's actually a boss battle, so you need to do better to be stronger for it. I didn't manage to beat the boss but I could so it being doable.

Hope springs eternal. by Skosnowich 2018-12-24T00:03:31Z

From the comments it seems like I was supposed to ram the last station to win. However, since I tried that in the very first level and it caused me to fail, I specifically avoided it.

Garry's Sacrifice by Mordokay 2018-12-20T21:59:38Z

You packed a whole lot in here for 48h. It was a little confusing to play, though I found myself at it for longer than expected. Just having to mash clicks on the monsters to harvest resources over and over took a lot, then I finally killed the cave man and he got back up.

Pit of Zavghul by quadtree 2018-12-23T05:04:40Z

Great work fitting a lot into here. The level generation seems solid and the number of items is impressive. I agree with others that once I grabbed the right item (Wizardsteel Axe in this case) the game was super easy. Although, I think I got killed at the very end by a Z-something that maybe one-hitted me? Clicking to attack ended up removing the game over screen each time before I could read it. Also, would be nice to get knocked to 0 one time so I can heal or something, since so many enemies are new all the time. You also get hungry super often.

Night of the Clawrm by dwemthy 2018-12-23T23:49:54Z

Cute little game! Was fun and overall a good execution of a simple concept. Takes too long to drag the villagers, though. 75% of the time I was playing it was just dragging their bodies.

ANGRY MOUNTAIN GODS by ted 2018-12-23T23:35:17Z

Great art, pretty cool game. Once I figured it out, it was pretty easy (use those trees!). Solid game.

Sunset Empire by Aggrathon 2018-12-20T21:43:18Z

Cool idea, nice and simple Galcon-y city management. I had a hard time understanding what was going on... wish there was a way to pause or something so I could try to understand.

Escape The Sacrifice by Pete 2018-12-23T23:44:51Z

Great little escape room! I won. Has very little to do with the theme but is a strong entry otherwise.

SPOILER HINT for the final puzzle: read the clock instructions closely!

Book of Fire by andre-606 2018-12-23T05:45:22Z

This is a really solid entry, if a bit short. I really liked the feeling I had when I saw the spiders in the corner and said to myself, "Hmmm, if I attack them I'll take damage but I could use the healing." Great to create that decision. Could see this mechanic going far if you made a fuller game out of it.

Way of the Dodo by chrismcmath 2018-12-19T23:11:37Z

Great little game. The graphics especially shine. I think the game is definitely hampered by poor platforming controls (no doubt could be improved over time), but overall quite a feat.

Organic Harvest by shujal 2018-12-27T22:35:34Z

Excellent work. Very difficult on a trackpad, and I felt I was a little too short on cash generally (forced to sacrifice too may people) because so many people came in with like no organs at all. Never got the bonus items.

Zompantli by zener 2018-12-23T04:52:14Z

Great game. Good balance, plays well. Wish there was an ending of some kind (is there) and it didn't feel like I could strategize much. Still, very well built.

Sacrifiskeleton by IkigaiSeitetsu 2018-12-20T21:37:31Z

I like the idea, and it works well! Was pretty damn hard to win. :-) Some tighter platforming controls would really help, and maybe the ability to aim bones. I also think some of the guys trailing behind me died?

Ascension by tvle83 2018-12-23T05:28:43Z

I won... my fire stopped working and seemed pretty useless anyway (since the range was so short). I was never less than half health. So mostly I was just walking around shooting stuff. Pretty good.

Fist of Wrath by vlandemart 2018-12-19T22:50:12Z

Cool little game! I really like the concept, and I think it's executed decently. Would like if I could do a little more than just click, and having to wait to drop my fist is a little boring – limiting it in some other way might be more fun (maybe the longer you wait, the bigger the AoE, but you can rapid-fire if desired, for example).

Soul Crucible by Eli Delventhal 2018-12-19T06:52:31Z

@hugonun – looks like there was a tiny bug in there where the wrong prefab was dragged for the 2 crystal recipe (which as you found made it impossible to proceed). Also I noticed that the sounds weren't working when played from the browser due to another minor issue. I fixed those if you want to try again.

Soul Crucible by Eli Delventhal 2018-12-23T22:55:30Z

@dorukh Thanks. :-) I cut a lot of corners with the assets so that it would be possible. For example, the world map is actually a zoomed out version of a Minecraft server map I play on. :-P Keeping the characters and items super low res (16x16) and based upon art I've already drawn before makes them very fast to knock out. It only took me about 3 hours to draw every character, and 2 more to draw the items. The UI took by far the most time, and probably looks the worst!

Soul Crucible by Eli Delventhal 2018-12-23T23:09:27Z

@hacktier Auch, you're right! Another balance problem. Looks like it's impossible to beat the demons. You'd need to kill at least one to be able to kill one, it's a catch-22. I'll type a new number into the config and update it.

@luker128 Yeah, I was planning for a quest that just gains you souls, but never got around to it. I agree it's a bit slow.

Soul Crucible by Eli Delventhal 2018-12-25T19:21:26Z

@miziziziz You're right, there's no way to defend against normal attacks. I was planning on it but it ended up out of scope. Also, in some cases, I had to add a bit of normal attack to an enemy because otherwise there was an edge case that could cause the battle to never end (each side doing 0 to each other).

One for Another - A tactical combat game by muffty 2018-12-23T05:19:10Z

Pretty solid game. Lots going on here, including cutscenes. I found the battles a little bit drawn out, mainly because enemies were attacking each time a single one of my guys attacked. Ganging up on an Orc didn't feel that way – one of those almost single-handedly took down two people because he effectively gets 8x as many attacks. I like the sacrifice idea for the abilities, but with so many characters it was unclear the real value of it. So most characters just felt like they were either melee or ranged and that was the only appreciable difference.

Sacrifitem by ggraca 2018-12-19T22:44:03Z

Interesting. The instructions in-game are wrong (it says to play and sacrifice both with the LMB) but it plays once I sorted that out. I think that the core concept is neat but the item randomization seemed poorly balanced – we both kept healing up more than damage could be done.

Behead by wdelvi 2018-12-19T06:50:11Z

Man, this is really good. Excellent work. It's tight and simple but very satisfying. I could see this being a full on game.

The Goodwill Of Gods by Kromzem 2018-12-20T21:50:07Z

Nice playable game. Took me a long time to realize I had to go to the center to make a sacrifice, I had almost given up playing when I finally figured it out. Wish I could just sacrifice by being near the altar, rather than having to press E first, because even 2 button presses is often enough to get hit by the attack.

Bokeh by arron-fowler 2018-12-19T23:15:34Z

*Feels* really good. However, I never really figured out how it worked. "Stances" in particular confused me. Instead, I was just trying to match lights as they went by, which seemed right. So I won against my friend but never quite knew why!

Throw them down by gankei 2018-12-19T22:59:16Z

Interesting. I wasn't entirely clear on what I was controlling when I did what, or why the balloon went up a lot versus a little... just tried a relatively random combo until I won.

Disorder by MaxKlimenok 2018-12-20T21:32:08Z

Well made game, lots of visual polish. I found the gameplay lacking though, because the core interaction wasn't tight enough – the platforming. Didn't really feel in control, didn't have context of where I was going, wasn't sure where to find keys, etc. I was really excited for this! Would love to play a post-compo version.

Third by onnofal 2018-12-20T21:40:01Z

The game feels really good. Nice polish. Wasn't clear on why a cat would survive one time and die another, and when a new cat might appear. There is a bug where I was offscreen between restarts.

Operation SOL-3 by Criobite 2020-05-04T20:20:11Z

Great classic FPS implementation in a short period of time! Feels pretty good to play and you really nailed the atmosphere and the classic look. Really did feel like you nailed that retro feel, I'm super impressed for the time limit.

Some feedback – the gameplay felt a bit samey and one-note: mainly, hide while health regenerates or during reload, then shoot, then hide. Would have been fun if I could strafe and stuff like that to reduce enemy accuracy and the like, and if not all the enemies immediately stormed the door upon opening – have them hide behind corners and whatnot.

Great work!

myBUDDY O.S. by Lawnchair Society 2020-04-27T18:28:30Z

Cute game, fun idea. On Mac, the game isn't transparent, but I still got the idea. Very cute and clever.

I think that I would have been much more into it if more happened. Things came on the screen very rarely (every few seconds or so even though destroying them takes only a second or less), and as a result I was just sitting there most of the time. I also don't know if this was intentional or not but I could get like 30-40 upgrades at once before the thing went away, making me overpowered extremely quickly.

Lord of the Packets by Zennith 2020-05-04T01:49:29Z

I liked the idea. Command line interfaces in games are fun for sure. I think one pitfall of those interfaces, at least when you're showing the game to programmers who know how to use shell commands, is that they'll expect quality of life shell stuff. Tab to finish commands, aliases, stuff like that. It didn't "feel" like a shell to me in the absence of that, instead I felt like I was typing the same pattern repeatedly (I didn't see a reason to have multiple slots since I couldn't affect more than one at a time?). I'm a very fast typist and was able to mostly keep up with the thing dropping by my third try, but I was disappointed to find that nothing really changed there.

So seems like you've got a nugget of something cool here but didn't quite make it all the way.

Looks like the LD website is going to go down. :-P

The Sword of Saturn by tinykidtoo 2020-04-21T06:10:31Z

Pretty solid game, feels good to play. Works quite well overall. I beat Diana and then was done playing, but enjoyed my journey.

Feels a bit like the game at this stage is mostly just watching your health bar and hitting Q when you're about to die, but I'm super impressed with how many different enemy types, levels, and even boss battles you got in. Nice work.

Sunset Directive by incobalt 2020-04-26T06:42:02Z

Quite enjoyed it, did two endings (which I think is all of them?). The story is good and the length was perfect for a game jam. Nice work!

Space Engine Janitor by kschmidt 2020-04-26T05:32:17Z

Good job making something complete with a start and end, multiple levels, and multiple mechanics. I had issues with the text and game area being extremely tiny (on a Macbook retina display) but it was still doable. I think the accomplishment here, either way, is pretty good.

The gameplay itself I found pretty frustrating and not super fun - it was hard to predict exactly where the surges would go in order to time my dropping of the traps. So I didn't feel like I could really plan, instead I was just clicking everywhere hoping they'd walk into it.

Light in darkness by tgiant 2020-05-04T20:31:26Z

A jME game! Cool I used to use this engine. It's been so long I had to download the JDK though.

Pretty solid little game! I enjoyed it, and I like that shooting reduces your health. Clever. I had some issues with the screen being clipped (I think I chose an aspect ratio it didn't like) but it was still playable. Would have liked some indication that enemies with > 1 health were killable, and maybe a minimap, but overall this is quite well done.

The Other Maple Story by Kyle Farwell 2020-05-04T01:38:36Z

Dang the Mac version seems to be corrupted and won't open.

Morose by 100th_Coin 2020-04-26T06:01:12Z

I really like it, feels a whole lot like Undertale in a good way. That being said, there's a lot I felt was *almost* there and could be improved later, most importantly that I never understood exactly what was going on with the combat.

And, unfortunately, a bug blocked me on two occasions (the first time I quit and restarted, the second time I gave up, very close to the end) where trying to create some sort of invalid plant has me try to plant nothing into a plot (looks like the same bug as Clayton) and that locked me into a broken state that couldn't be resolved.

Shame, I really wanted to see what would happen!

HEX ATTACK by Robber 2020-04-23T00:43:23Z

Pretty cool (especially for pure JS and canvas)! Unfortunately I wasn't clear where the depth was... once I figured out that I just needed to "eat" the enemy and avoid their projectiles (except where I wanted to self-destruct an area) I wasn't clear on what the challenge really was. Echoing what others I have said, I want to see where this thing goes. There's a lot to like here, but its lack of clarity / challenge hampers it currently.

Father... Musn't I Kill It? by Andrfw 2020-04-28T01:18:52Z

Haha, clever idea. Not really much of a game but I gave you a decent score for the sheer cheek of it.

Good Squire by Eli Delventhal 2020-04-22T05:09:08Z

Thanks for the great feedback and comments everyone!

@dummydojo great constructive criticism, thanks so much! I agree that Ragnar's movement and controls are ripe for improvement. We kept iterating all the way through the jam on this, more than anything else in the game. Sorry for your thumb! We might experiment with tap space to pick up, tap to drop, instead of needing to hold it. Good feedback on the level design! Similarly to Ragnar's controls, we iterated all the way through on these. The previous incarnation was *way* too hard so we may have gone a bit too far in the other direction.

@brzyrt thanks for the feedback! Yeah, we wanted to pack a lot of content in... it definitely takes 30-60 minutes to get all the stars and beat all the levels. Perhaps that's a bit too long for a jam entry!

@many I hear many you on the audio getting annoying. I'm planning on doing a post-compo (which I will provide soon) that gives you the option to mute Ragnar.

@has I'm surprised you didn't think the game matched the theme! It goes deep, dude. We were aiming at it from multiple angles: 1) You're the squire keeping Ragnar alive, 2) Ragnar is trying to keep the love alive in his relationship, and 3) If you finish the game (scroll up in the comments and you can see the victory screen) you'll see that the squire is actually the wife (spoiler), and so was doing all this work to keep love alive on her end as well. That's like the inception of theme fulfillment! :-P

Good Squire by Eli Delventhal 2020-05-03T22:45:14Z

Thanks again everyone for all the feedback! We really really appreciate it.

@rustim You're totally right that the totems are bit pick-up-and-drop repeatedly. If we continue with this game, we'll definitely iterate on that core mechanic, because we noticed this issue too.

@aj-jones Yeah good point, didn't even think of using the keyboard for navigation but might as well have.

@vesper @marcusnystrand I hear you on it being too easy! If only you had tried the build before which was absurdly difficult! For the sake of the jam, we decided easier is better, but the balance could still be tuned. If you go for all the stars that can really up the difficulty.

@fatpenguin Huge thanks for the detailed feedback and the kind words! Really good point on him being a bit too random – if it helps, he essentially stays his course unless he's very close to a wall, in which case he will turn away from left or right, whichever has "more" wall. It purposefully feels "organic" but that means it doesn't really follow easy to predict rules. I hear you that this could really use some adjustment. Also slowing him down or zooming the map out is a good idea too.

Good Squire by Eli Delventhal 2020-05-06T18:52:45Z

@fatpenguin Yeah we fortunately made it super easy to tweak. Lots of parameters that can be messed with. Thanks again for all the feedback.

The Last of the Dino Eggs by MaybeLaterx 2020-05-04T05:13:58Z

Solid game! Actually took me a little while to figure out what was going on – that I needed to grab eggs from yellow spots and move them to blue spots where meteors weren't going. A little more of a tutorial would have helped there. As soon as I understood the rules it was easy, and was quite fun at the end when there were a ton of meteors at once.

I think your choice to put eggs inside little lava pits is a bit weird – I kept burning myself just trying to get it to grab the egg, felt like a cheap way to get damaged.

Where the Fire Goes by Roka Josh 2020-05-04T01:35:42Z

Pretty nice game! Solid level of completion and good exploration of a simple core concept. I didn't see any bugs or major flaws in the game, I think you set out to do what you wanted to. Plenty good for a jam, and has the potential to be a bigger game if you chose to make it so.

A couple minor gripes: - The spreading mechanic, for whatever reason, was never super clear to me. Like I still don't really know why on the last level I succeeded (and failed times before). Exactly when a fire can catch wasn't super clear to me. This meant that the puzzles either felt easy, or I succeeded without a super clear reason why (felt more trial and error than the "I'm such a smart badass" feeling I get from super well-polished puzzle games. - The music got quite painful, quite quickly. It was completely fine at first but is far too distinct and "hard" to be on loop, IMO. - Some minor UX gripes, like I would have loved to just move on to the next level instead of going back to the level select after winning a level, and clicking the "Next" button after winning a level would keep the level I had just beaten selected instead of moving on to the next one. Caused me to select the same level again a couple of times.

The Drown by Simon Rahnasto 2020-04-28T20:35:31Z

Well, that's a winner. Excellent work.

Only minor gripes: balance could use a tiny bit of work, UI is a bit difficult to understand at first, voice acting is occasionally not amazing, and some gun types appear to be much better than others, but... still very good. Well done.

Your Pet Alien by AdonisDevs 2020-04-28T00:47:52Z

Cute little game, easy enough to understand and follow, could go places if you up the complexity and fix issues mentioned above. I lasted 44 hours and eventually lost when mom entered my room straight from the yard, so I don't know what's up with that.

The "bye" sound effect got pretty irritating pretty quickly.

Spawnhood by JammedGame 2020-04-26T06:07:46Z

Cute game. I grew him up all the way. As others have pointed out, it wasn't always clear what to do in order to be "right" and at some point I was just clicking through to get to the end. But it's pretty well polished and it seems like you set out to do what you wanted to.

B.U.B.B.A. Express by Pizzasgood 2020-04-21T05:57:48Z

Solid entry, real bullet hell! When the robots first started shooting I was like "holy *crap* those bullets are *fast*!" But I still had a good time. I think this overall has good potential.

Some feedback points: β€’ The UI was ultra tiny on my MacBook Pro retina display Firefox. β€’ I didn't think repairing BUBBA added a lot to the game, it was pretty tedious to jump down to get junk and bring it back up to the center. I would have rather been able to grab a lot at once, or something like that. β€’ Agree with others that once you install turrets it goes from too hard to too easy. β€’ There was way too much to understand at first without context, especially in that tiny UI.

Good entry!

Space Girl Thibi Feed Me by Elnu 2020-04-25T22:05:04Z

Very nice graphics, and overall feels quite polished. Unfortunately, there were what I think some pretty major bugs on the Mac Firefox HTML5 version that made it pretty hard to play. At least half the time when I grabbed fruit it would just kind of disappear off the screen (as if it were falling through the floor), even if it was the fruit I needed (instead of feeding the guy it would fly off). Not sure if that was intended, but it would force me to avoid fruit he didn't need at the moment (easier said than done because the fruit was often off camera) because if I prematurely grabbed the fruit there would often be nothing to grab at all.

Space Girl Thibi Feed Me by Elnu 2020-04-27T05:19:59Z

Dang! Well let me know if I can play a debug version and send some logs or anything. Hate those cannot repro bugs.

Drop Bear by silentcoder99 2020-04-25T21:56:45Z

Pretty cute and fun. What's in those trash cans, man, is it gasoline?! On my first try I thought I had to keep mashing space next to a fire to put it out, which made the game impossible, haha. I assume it's for balance reasons but I would expect the fire to go out immediately once I deal with it, instead of me somehow setting off what is essentially an automated system.

Great work overall creating something you can keep playing to try to beat your high score and feels like a pretty complete entry.

Fuel Hungry by WubbaDuck 2020-04-21T05:50:37Z

Pretty fun game, I like the idea of the flame dying out. I didn't feel like the platforming mechanics were quite good enough to really sell me on this, especially a tiny passageway you need to jump through. But pretty fun overall.

Vivere Computatrum by Will F 2020-04-21T06:24:05Z

So much depth here, that's really well done. Unfortunately I couldn't really figure out how to get the monks to do exactly what I wanted, similar to @maverick95 's feedback. I seemed to be progressing but wasn't entirely sure why or how, and there are so many mechanics going on that it was difficult to all parse at once.

I feel like with a tutorial and a bit more handholding this could be a great game.

Keep It Alive by DoctorTM 2020-04-21T06:01:40Z

Alas, I wasn't really able to figure out how to play. Would love some explanation text above or something. I couldn't do anything except run out in the dark and grab sticks to throw on the fire. How do you make a tool? Also I had issues with the controls in general, sometimes it seemed like it stopped following my mouse. Maybe a browser focus issue.

If you add explanations etc feel free to ping me and I'll try again.

Keep It Alive by DoctorTM 2020-04-23T00:18:32Z

Okay! With that little bit of help I played a little bit more! I still wasn't clear on what exactly was making torches (I kind of mashed buttons and clicked until it made one), but I was able to explore around and last a minute or so.

I really like the idea here and where you're going with it. Reminds me of Don't Starve. However, I think as you've identified already, clarity and balance are pretty rough and so it's hard to really get into it. I agree playtesting is really important! I had my wife my play my game and when she got pissed and stopped playing a couple levels in I knew I had to improve the tutorial and make it easier, haha.

I think this could be really cool if you further refine it!

Space VIP: The Needyon Ambassador by Rein 2020-04-21T06:42:16Z

Man I really wanted to love this, I really did. The theme is on point, the graphics are super impressive, the atmosphere is a knockout. Unfortunately, after trying 3 times looking in vain for a hull breach (wandering over what seems an extremely large ship), I only succeeded one time and it was in a place I had already passed, implying that there was more than one breach? I lost either way, and never figured out how to patch anything. I found a patch once but couldn't figure out how to pick it up (nor could I ever find the breach).

I wonder if this is exacerbated by me running this on a trackpad (Mac OS laptop)... the camera look speed was dizzying so I had to drag my finger *very* slightly to look around, and sometimes I'd rotate like 720ΒΊ in an instant and get confused about where I was, haha.

Anyway, this really does *look* like an amazing game. I'll try it on another machine later and hope I have better results.

The Last Flower by Unimaginable_Code_Studios 2020-05-08T18:21:52Z

Cute and well-made game, quite impressive for being 11 years old. At that age all I made was a text adventure. :-)

As others have mentioned, the UI was super super small for me (perhaps because I am on a dense monitor). Also, the platforming felt a bit slidey and unpredictable (I wasn't sure exactly why he would go at certain heights or not) which caused me to die a few times.

Keep it up! I started making video games at 11 and now I'm 34 and have been doing it professionally for 12 years. If you don't stop you'll just get better and better.

Rouge Connection by Edalbung 2020-05-08T18:29:05Z

Great game! I had to review it because I kept seeing your comments in other games (including mine). I think this is a really solid entry.

Good stuff: β€’ Great job making simple graphics look nice. The blur effect is a good touch and overall it feels very good. β€’ The gameplay is unique and different, but still simple enough to understand. β€’ It's a nice self-contained entry.

Improvement points: β€’ There's not much time to react to the guys coming towards the ball because the screen is pretty zoomed in. Pulling it backwards and adding a Y dimension to it could probably add a lot more. β€’ Pretty quickly I realized the the only successful way to play is to just shoot left and right without moving. Some more tweaking would be very helpful, and some reason for the ball to be behind you other than as a weapon could add a lot.

Nice work!

Final Interrogation by Gamer Fates 2020-04-26T06:54:31Z

Hm, I thought it was pretty good. The story was interesting and it definitely made me want to feel like a detective. I didn't feel like there was enough time or dialogue to actually do detective work, though... there were essentially 5 questions I could ask at maximum, and they were mostly repeating information that I could already see in the big text descriptions of each suspect. I got it correct because on what appeared to be an unrelated question one of the characters called out the other one... So yeah it didn't feel like I had really dug up or solved anything. I was kind of expecting some minor detail in their backstory to not add up or something and that's how I'd do it.

Keep Hope Alive by Vawer 2020-04-21T05:36:29Z

Excellent mood. Unfortunately I ran into several blocking bugs and eventually gave up. The first time I got a JS error picking up a battery (see @orsi, I also have Mac OS X and Firefox), and then after climbing up to what looked like another guy like me (past the second locked door) and it stopped responding to all input (at the top of the ladder).

Aside from these bugs, I think I would really have enjoyed it if not for: 1) The light-charging doors take *so long* to charge! I assume this is to balance out the flashlight battery loss, but it's just very dull. 2) The sound effects are pretty painful, especially the aforementioned charging door. I had to turn the sound off.

The pace seemed a bit slow, but might have been totally fine without the charging doors. Also lighting up the door as it is being charged would help make it clear what's happening.

I really wanted to finish this and love it. I hope you improve it!

Hm Mac "can't be opened". :-(

Saving Zenith by Gricefin 2020-05-05T03:29:24Z

I got the Mac version to open, seemed like it could be really cool but is maybe incomplete. The camera controls are weird, you sort of orbit around without doing anything. I figured out how to sort of make it to each building, most of them didn't really do anything, I flow to my asteroid with the rocket and tried to mine and it always mined 0 resources so I gave up. :-( Really good first try, the game *feels* like it should be good but it doesn't quite work.

Looking forward to seeing either the improved version of this or your next LD game! I hope you don't feel badly about this, it's really amazing to make anything in 2 days, and the more you practice the better you'll be. If you want proof, you can look at the LD games I've been making for over 10 years and my current entry and compare them – I improve measurably every time.

Keep it up!

LD49 — Unstable

Ruins of Instability by francoisvn 2021-10-13T17:10:02Z

Reminds me of Necrodancer but without the music pressure (which I liked). You do a great job simplifying it, and it's well-polished and runs well. I think my only real complaint is the lack of progression - it got samey pretty quickly, and even when I delivered 50 scrolls nothing happened. No idea if there was more or not.

The RNG also occasionally dumped into a pit surrounded by enemies with no option but to take a bunch of damage.

Alas, I could not get it to launch on Mac. I was a Java game dev back in the day too, but am no longer an expert in the black magic of getting it to... *go*. I don't even appear to have any error messages in the console.

Hiding Heisenbugs by ultrarat 2021-10-07T00:23:33Z

I won! Pretty good start to a game. I think it's a good seed of an idea, sort of reminds me of BaBa Is You but a tad more complex / simple at the same time.

To make it more fun, I'd challenge you to figure out how to make it continuous (rather than running a single trial) and how to make it a little less to read and grok. Basically more frequent but smaller moments of problem-solving.

Dizzard Wizzard by ryjcio 2021-10-07T20:33:16Z

Top tier game. The art and atmosphere are top notch, and the core mechanic is clever. I beat it! I think aiming as others have said is a bit of a challenge, and I felt to some extent the best spell was the very first one (the ||chicken|| one is OP of course but it doesn't give you money). There were so many spells, and so many were just not terribly useful, that I would just use 1 or 2 at a time so it kind of defeated the purpose of new spells. The ||heal|| spell also made it nigh impossible to lose, and the very last stage is a bit too sprawling (I was walking in circles to find what I missed). All in all, excellent entry!

Thanks for playing @ultrarat and @dalep ! Hmm unclear on what the deal with the download is. Dale, I had some more time to take a look and turns out I just needed to lower the quality settings in Unity (they were being published on "Ultra" quality, oops). Made a new build after knocking it down to medium if you want to give it another try.

@bloodycoin well I suppose you wanting to play the game again is a good problem to have! Would indeed be amusing in a post-compo entry to have her yell at you and then just force quit the app.

Vintage SPACE Restaurant with AI by DGSpitzer 2021-10-07T20:50:54Z

Nice little game! Good progression and you managed to fit a lot in here.

Driving Blind by MildlyDisturbing 2021-10-07T20:58:02Z

Nicely implemented car physics for such a short time. I personally found the reverse walls frustrating because they reverse left and right, so I gave up on that level with 3 of those walls.

Politics and Power Grids by DaleP 2021-10-07T00:30:34Z

Really clever way of turning this into a game. I liked the idea a lot but as others have said, I couldn't really tell what was happening. The UX for sure could be improved. My main issue was that I couldn't tell what meant power was on or off to a certain region (outlined means on or off? - I see your note now but it was unintuitive) and even though you say that you click to toggle, it didn't seem to want to toggle a lot of the time. Maybe because the grid was overused? I also never understood what was up with the generator, there were so many stats.

I really like where you're going with this, I think mainly cleaning up the UX would make a big improvement.

Castle fall: gatekeeper by Rs11s21n 2021-10-13T18:19:49Z

Strong Papers Please inspiration, of course. Seems like the rules don't change correctly in the HTML5 build? Eventually it looked like I was losing score even though I followed what it said. I started guessing and that worked mostly okay. I think it could have used some UX improvements (like a NEXT button instead of clicking on the people, for example), and some more variety in gameplay (but perhaps I missed it).

OverCauldron - Lonely industrial stories across the hearth by bloodycoin 2021-10-13T18:10:23Z

Pretty well done! Very cute graphics and understandable gameplay. I agree with @yodog that pretty quickly it felt like busy work. I also never got anything to explode, so it didn't feel very unstable to me.

HOLD IT by Cloistered 2021-10-07T00:49:49Z

Cute, and funny shapes you're balancing. I gave up when I got to the cat. It felt a bit luck of the draw rather than skill - at times no matter how much I corrected the object would keep falling in the same direction.

Unstable Atoms by Harmadillo 2021-10-13T18:26:21Z

Honestly this is pretty rough and difficult to play as-is. I really like the idea of shooting off electrons and collecting more, it's a clever take on the theme, but the execution was quite rough. Aiming was hard, it's difficult picking up more electrons, and it's unclear why the game ends.

The music and audio are also painfully loud (literally) but I really appreciate that I'm able to lower the volume! I dropped both SFX and music down to 1.

Unstable connection by Daniikk1012 2021-10-13T17:17:26Z

I gave you a high score for theme because I thought this was a very clever play on it. But, I had to score Fun pretty low because I think the game is missing something gameplay-wise. For this sort of game, I think you need to have kind of an overwhelming number of things to do and it needs to be clear what all the options are (imagine Space Team). Most of the time, nothing was really happening and I was just waiting for something to do. Then the number of things I *could* do was pretty low, and it wasn't clear when the power was off or the connection was dying to something. So mostly it was just clicking through things constantly hoping to find something to do. Then my download reset and I gave up.

I think you could definitely make something out of your clever use of the theme and the nice graphics if you keep working at it. A frantic fighting against the clock sort of game could work very well.

Threadships by Mavvy 2021-10-13T17:53:02Z

Well polished and well done overall. It was really smart how you managed to make WASD do everything. It's a bit too difficult for me (seemed inevitable that I would slowly lose HP and then die) so I didn't see an ending, if there is one.

Cheating Simulator: Unstable Relationships by kyboon 2021-10-07T20:01:31Z

Hahaha man this is great, really had me laughing and smiling. The polish is really really high and the execution is very good. A high scorer for me. My only note is that it's a bit one-note – the excellent initial concept doesn't have enough variety to keep me coming back. Great work!

velho by jnur 2021-10-07T21:09:27Z

I eventually figured out how to play - just look at the symbol on the left. Once I had that it became relatively easy. I think teaching that and ramping up in difficulty would be good, but it's a good start!

Eroding Chickens by April Lehman 2021-10-07T21:04:37Z

Nice chill game with a good amount to do. Took me a bit of getting use to (I think maybe there's too many different keys / things to do, would perhaps have been better to consolidate or do some kind of inventory-style thing) but I had an island that was inevitably disappearing before long. :-)

LIFE|DEATH by Sockenpuppe 2021-10-13T18:49:31Z

Very pretty game with some simple mechanics. Looks like you fixed many of my complaints in the post-jam build.

I found a way to cheese it easily - just stand next to the portal thing and suck in the ghosts from there.

Realignment by Mediflect 2021-10-07T00:43:46Z

A great entry! Good dialogue and a fun use of very simple mechanics in a good way. Super well-scoped for LD, well done for your first one!

Feedback: the shape toggle puzzle was the first I walked to and was the least clear. I thought I had to come back until I realized via another puzzle that I just need to make it blue. The dialogue is also a little long in places - I was solving the next thing before they could finish talking. I would also have loved the ability to load my save and restart to see the other ending - as it stands the walking around was too long to play again.

Tide of Rot by ryusui 2022-04-07T03:07:03Z

Great points for mood and vibe, the story is cute and the art is good. I thought the gameplay was a bit one note and the hitbox of my character was a little unclear, but it really is a solid showing,.

Heaven Can Wait by paulhocker 2022-04-06T04:35:52Z

Really solid game! I made it to heaven with a score of 30 faith. That's much higher than the previous but super beatable, I picked up like 8 deadly sins without realizing they were reducing my faith. I wasn't clear on the reason for the different "levels" - seems like each level is very short until the last one, which seems endless. I kind of would rather just have had the whole thing endless. Loved the art for the crawling enemies, super creepy.

Evacuation of Zorkid by SIGILL 2022-04-09T06:03:15Z

Cute entry! I thought the repulsors and stuff were a cool way to do it. On my first try I accidentally sent the moon directly into the planet. :-X

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-04T22:58:38Z

Hmm sorry about the issues, @james-7777 and @snesgaard . Looks like I need https to support WebGL builds now. I'll put it on itch or something shortly. As for the zips, looks like you can right click to save link as but then you'll get a security risk warning. You need to approve that first.

Looks like the days of putting builds on my simple webhost are over. I'll get these all on itch.

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-05T00:03:25Z

@james-7777 @snesgaard Okay I moved it to itch.io, try now.

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-07T03:54:11Z

@ubershmekel yeah if the enemy attacks the same time you attack then it deflects. I agree it doesn't quite work - it was an attempt to keep you from just swinging your sword over and over. Instead if you defend the attack then counterattack, that works better. Or if you're just talking about the "feel" of the art, that's great feedback too. I'm a game designer and programmer, not an artist, so I'm always just doing my best in that department. :P Thanks for the feedback!

I never actually tested restart or quit, haha. Maybe they're broken, sorry!

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-10T03:09:19Z

Thanks for all the great feedback!

@slecornu since it's a compo game I only have 2 days actually. I could have balanced it much better with 3. :)

@pordrack thank you so much for the excellent constructive feedback! With the upgrades, the idea was to have it be more sprawling / let you explore, but I literally added them with 1 hour left so didn't get time to explore that idea as much as I hoped. The speed boost is the only optional one. Haha bummer swinging your sword at the start! Another undeveloped idea was being able to change your start location or kill off some clones, because a few mistakes like that can make it impossible to win. Good feedback on speeding up the rewind. Yes, the background is quite ugly. It was also something I had to do very quickly, and there are so many rooms that I really couldn't spend enough time. Basically, I painted it super rough, put it through an AI filter to give it a uniform style, and then pixelated it. No way to get nice crisp pretty art that way, but at least I had something. :) Yes, the sword has some lag – I'm not an artist so I did way too many frames on the swing. I should have just cut some out but so it goes. Good call with the camera! One of those things I didn't get to tweaking.

@aune Thanks so much! Great points, I agree the backgrounds aren't as pretty as I'd like.

@kiddy Thank you! Agree about the camera, and yeah the controls could use a bit more work.

@steve7411 Thank you for the feedback!

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-10T16:16:44Z

Thanks for playing on your stream, @tigerj ! To answer a couple of questions that came up: yes, I have a Mac keyboard, yes, I used X scale to flip the sprite; I actually drew the delete button directly into the sprite to save time so there was no quick fix. In terms of you being unable to get by, I noticed that you basically never used the shield which is pretty clutch when you’ve got a whole army nearby, and that would have helped. But either way it’s not super well balanced!

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-10T21:36:08Z

@edmanbosch Thanks so much for all the feedback! Great call about the hallways; I wondered if that would be an issue. I purposefully moved the enemies far from doorways for this reason, but in hindsight I should have just made the walls semi-transparent! I'm glad you liked the combat. I definitely didn't have as much time as I wanted to make it really work (for example, when you block I wanted enough stun time to get a couple attacks in, but you only get one). I also wanted it to be more like a counter-attack, so it's not quite right as is.

Both you and @gix 's (and others) feedback about the camera is a great point. This is why I wish I had had time to do some playtests. It never bothered me, but I see now why it's an issue, and it would take me literally 30 seconds to zoom the camera out or make it follow more tightly. Oh well!

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-15T03:13:22Z

@ryusui Sorry you didn't enjoy the game. Definitely could have been balanced better.

@lesinvisible Yeah, the backgrounds are super quickly sketched and then filled out with an AI. It's definitely much uglier than the characters.

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-22T19:51:54Z

@gbgames thanks for the great feedback! You're totally right about needing to mitigate the clones somehow. I had grand plans for new spawn points being unlocked, being able to kill your clones off, etc. And you're right about the hitboxes, they're not great from up and down (I wanted to draw art for up and down but ran out of time).

VargaVinter by Simon Rahnasto 2022-04-10T03:41:16Z

This certainly *looks* amazing. Unfortunately, I've never been able to get love files to work and am on Mac. I expect this will be a top entry from your comments! Congratulations!

I knew I was saving my 5 star rating for something.

Ousted by Reispfannenfresser 2022-04-09T06:31:16Z

Nicely implemented game that didn't overstay its welcome! A bit easy as others have said, but I enjoyed it.

The Eyes Upon The Earth by N.O. Games 2022-04-10T03:38:44Z

Good solid game! I had some issues playing because I have a trackpad (so I couldn't boost and shoot at the same time) but I still managed to get like 2000 scrap. I wasn't sure if there was an end to it – I had the homing gun and mostly didn't see anyone all game because I kept killing them off screen.

teleBOTation by Phoenix Fireflower 2022-04-09T05:53:41Z

Good job, it kept me going for awhile even though I'm someone who doesn't really like puzzle games. The teleport mechanic was well executed and some of the puzzles were pretty good brain-busters! There were some bugs that others have mentioned and I think the pacing wasn't perfect, but it's a really solid entry.

Word Wizard by Slecornu 2022-04-10T05:02:32Z

Great game! I couldn't rate the graphics because everything is pretty broken on my Mac - it all looks yellow (which also made it very difficult to play). But I could still mostly play and I could tell that this is very good quality. I didn't like that I wasn't allowed to type any word I could see – especially with my derped up graphics it could make it very difficult to know which word to type.

The End Of Days by Anson Rutherford 2022-04-10T04:56:30Z

Nice game! I liked the Monkeyball-esque way of controlling things. Great writing and overall gameplay. I found it was a bit tedious that if you make one mistake you have to start the whole level over, and I also felt the curve was a bit weird (level 2 was easier than level 1) but overall I had a great time.

Delay the Inevitable by Gix 2022-04-09T06:06:37Z

I liked the flipping on its head of Pong. Obviously the game is on the simple side and lacking in variety, but I could see you taking this concept places if you wanted. I remember loving Mortal Pongbat back in the day. :-)

The Pit by Itskdog 2022-04-09T05:42:56Z

Really solid entry, I gave high marks for innovation because I've never seen anything quite like this. I see the potential here for a post-compo update. As it stands, the balance doesn't feel quite right, and I don't really feel like there are super meaningful choices (which is really important to me in a deck builder). Basically the strategy was to get rid of all the weight cards asap and burn whatever I have when I was about to crash, and then smash through all the other cards very quickly. More interesting and varied levels, maybe multiplicative card effects, etc could help for a post compo. Nice work!

My Girlfriend Wants a PUPPY!! by James_7777 2022-04-10T03:18:41Z

Cute game, great job on the artwork. Took me a second to figure out how to cycle words, and I would have preferred a hotkey for each color rather than cycling, but overall it was simple and easy to pick up. I found myself wanting some more variety of gameplay after a couple rounds of the same words etc.

THEMARUNGA by Trexxak 2022-04-09T06:20:28Z

Well this game is really somethin'! I was impressed with the variety of different sorts of levels you got in here, although I thought the cutscene to gameplay ratio was off so I never really felt like I got to practice / master the mechanics.

I don't know how to code by ubershmekel 2022-04-10T03:25:40Z

Haha really funny premise. I made it to week 11 but could have gone further – I didn't realize that blowing all my cash would end things for me. Oh well! As for improvements, obviously more art would have been nice, and I think the balance could have been improved. Sometimes I would get the same 2 cards over and over.

A Dank Cave by ssh.randy 2022-04-09T05:36:51Z

Great use of ASCII art, it's well done. Plays pretty well. I couldn't predict how enemies would move so I kept dying from randomly hitting crabs.

Totally Original Worm Game by SilverHammerMax 2022-04-07T03:03:38Z

Plays fine on Mac OS X, although it asked for Microphone permissions?

I thought it was a pretty fun game. A relatively simple tower defense, but solid and works fine. I would say the audio actually detracts from the game before too long because the music is so repetitive, I think I would have preferred sounds effects instead. Nice work!

Overwhelmed by Asieke 2022-04-07T03:26:36Z

Great graphics! I didn't find it very fun, though, I wish I had been more in control of things. Personal preference, maybe!

The Root of All Evil by DV_company 2022-04-07T03:32:27Z

Excellent mood, theme, sounds, graphics, and humor. Really good marks there. I didn't find the game that fun, though - it went from there being not enough plant (it was difficult to find, although the minimap is excellent) to suddenly being far too much for me to do anything about it. Which is part of why it fit the theme well, haha.

Myst the Alchemist by netpunk 2022-04-09T05:58:27Z

I love the idea... unfortunately after making probably 50+ different kinds of potions and desperately trying to come up with some logic around what was good and what wasn't, I still only managed to damage and kill myself. Had to give up eventually.

Myst the Alchemist by netpunk 2022-04-10T03:10:56Z

@netpunk yeah I was very logical about how I combined things, and did only two at a time. Did stuff like water plus just one other thing, thinking water would be good base. Still didn't end up working out for me. Still really love the idea.

Car Chase Sequence by Pandamander 2022-04-22T19:57:51Z

Great game! I had fun driving around and figuring out how to drift. I think the difficulty could have been balanced a bit – it was either too easy or too hard. If I stayed inside of the town, the camera wasn't far enough ahead to anticipate some of the walls, and the moment I even touched a wall there was no way to avoid being captured. If I stayed outside the walls, I could just drive loops and be safe indefinitely. Really well polished overall.

Cold and Alone by David York 2022-04-05T18:45:31Z

Top marks for theme and art. Really well polished. The text is often really funny and channels vibes of The Martian. I also thought it was pretty fun and I wanted to explore. For whatever reason, I was never close to death, so I just kept going and not dying and being unsure why. So some balancing around that could really help, and maybe some way to "win" the game? I drove around for quite awhile expecting something to happen and eventually just stopped.

Great work, David! Definitely a 7.1/10 ;-)

DO NOT Explode by Zyang 2022-04-06T04:41:44Z

Hey - you should remove the Audio category from the game. The pick up item sound is definitely from Smash 64. Since you didn't make it yourself, you're not eligible for that category.

Anyway! I thought this game was really clever and fun, feels like it's destined to be a multiplayer party game! As a single player offering, I think you do a great job tutorializing it but the difficulty curve very suddenly ramps when you get 4 bombs on the same island. I couldn't beat that level because I was so many seconds behind. Nice work!

Nature Is Healing by KingOfSpill 2022-04-09T06:22:34Z

Hmm wouldn't run for me on Mac OS X. Didn't appear to be an executable there, and the unix file throws a segfault.

Save the Planet!! by Aethona 2022-04-10T03:28:10Z

Good use of the theme! Good job keeping it simple. I would have liked to see a few more mechanics, and the ramp from "too easy" to "holy crap!" was very sudden.

Solar Explosion by BingThePing 2022-04-07T03:21:49Z

Really solid game! You did an excellent job keeping your concept simple but expanding on it in a fun way. Reminds me a bit of my old LD entry Globe Guzzler. :)

I didn't really understand the distinction between the planets and it would have been nice if the purchase menu was either simpler or paused the game while open to give me time to read it. As others have said, you eventually lose because you just don't find a planet, but I enjoyed my time with it.

Mushrooms of the end by Pordrack 2022-04-09T06:26:08Z

Interesting! Kind of a tower defensey vibe. I wasn't sure why the shop wouldn't open up, then suddenly I had two shrooms but wasn't fast enough to water the other. And my crystals were gone? Confusing.

Balancing Balls by Tan games 2022-04-07T03:24:13Z

Nice and simple, works well. Would love to see where you can take this concept moving forwards, as it's obviously a little too simple right now. Welcome to the game jam scene!

LD53 — Delivery

Airborne Adventures by firellon 2023-05-03T23:25:53Z

Nice, very cute game. I think this is a really solid jam entry, one of the best put-together I've played so far. The physics felt just a bit too floaty and some things could be tad annoying (getting stuck on roofs for example) but overall worked quite well. Happy to have been involved in disposing of a murdered turd.

FedUp by jward 2023-05-05T20:48:56Z

I'm FedUp with how great this little jam game is! (Fed Up as in goes up, not as in irritated). You did a great job keeping the scope small so that you could deliver a nicely polished game.

I think there were a few things you could have improved, other than adding some more content: β€’ Controls are a bit weird, especially when you collide with something. I ended up bouncing between stuff a few times and it would instakill me. β€’ Audio would have been great, even if just made with sfxr β€’ I would have preferred a smaller drone and more wide-open worlds, less super-tight spaces. I had more fun with larger maneuvers than minute positioning. β€’ Going too high off the screen accidentally was a bummer for knowing when I'd come down. Either an indicator of how close I was to being back on screen or simple following the drone with the camera would have helped.

Quantum Post by Eli Delventhal 2023-05-02T16:49:14Z

@koos As others mentioned, it's actually the backspace key. D'oh! I should update that text.

@kosmik123 Yeah a couple people told me there's a bug here! I will look into and maybe update the entry if I can repro. Looks like maybe you get killed while rewinding time.

And thanks everyone else for the feedback!

Quantum Post by Eli Delventhal 2023-05-04T04:56:55Z

@kosmik123 @reed-molbak I believe I fixed that bug. Maybe. My code is shit. :)

@firellon Never heard of Mustache Armies but looked it up – great concept, and wow it got 4th place! Interestingly enough their entry is much closer to what I *wanted* to do here, but they were smarter and didn't do time reversal at all, they just stored clone data. I spent so much time implementing the camera going backwards and everything reversing when really it's just a cool effect and doesn't have anything to do with gameplay, haha. Anyway yeah I wanted a huge "army" of clones running around doing puzzles with you.

@joe-stack Yeah, I wanted to make the spawn area totally safe but didn't get around to it. Best option is to try to stab all the naughty clones as soon as you can. Later you get the dash and you mash that at the start to avoid swords as well.

@jward @enad96 @python-b5 @michelle-go Thank you for the feedback and kind words!

@thesmellofoxygen Yeah I changed the color palette midway through and forgot to update the cannons. :poop:

@zungryware Dang I was hoping I had fixed that. Sorry about that, a few other people had this issue as well.

PaperDrone by kromeboy 2023-05-03T23:03:37Z

Decent little Paperboy offshoot. It's really tough to aim without getting right next to each box and you're screwed if you don't find the paper re-ups, but it was fun. Not a ton here yet, would be good to see some more.

Cute! I love trading games. I wish there was more to the gameplay (seems just random sailing around, yes?) but I dig it. Good vibes.

Rogue 'n Royal by Bauke Regnerus 2023-05-02T20:43:33Z

Top marks for mood! Really well-polished and I enjoyed the tile flipping mechanic. Fun pulling back the curtain sort of gameplay. As others have said, some of the minigames are a bit problematic or even impossible (some of the mazes), but I enjoyed myself. Never managed to defeat the king, which I could have retried him without replaying the whole thing.

Broomstick Blitz by nsadie 2023-05-03T17:27:13Z

Very solid entry. I am a Kiki fan so really liked the take on the theme. Very pretty and the little story bits were cute. I think overall the game lacked a bit of substance and balance – quests were often impossible and only there so that I could gather the stuff I needed for the next quest. Felt kind of odd from a game design perspective. Also, the movement was a bit wonky and tough to control. I'd have loved a little more structure around the challenges and so on. But as I said, very solid entry!

Hmmm this crashes Chrome on Mac :(

The Holy Scanner by Teun de Vries 2023-05-03T00:03:29Z

Nice! The derpy legs and the humor in general were hilarious. Loved that aspect, and the overall vibe. I think the actual gameplay left a bit to be desired for me – it seemed either very easy (kill stuff off screen) or I would suddenly be swarmed by bats and die. I wasn't sure what triggered which, but the bats for sure were tough to deal with once there were one or two. The moment I started getting hit that was it.

Downsteam by SmelJey 2023-05-03T17:50:18Z

Really great overall entry. Unfortunately, I suck at it and was unable to win. Seems like a game of attrition. As others have said, I think the balance could use some work.

This reminds me a bit of Escape Velocity, if you've ever played that. One thing it had was each planet had both a numerical value and "High" "Low" "Very High" etc next to the price. That saved you some bookkeeping – I think having to remember exactly how much I bought something for was a bit of a pain here. Similarly, I think selling at a discount makes the game extra hard, you should maybe just make them 1:1 so people have fewer numbers to remember.

I finally figured out how to make a profit but just cheesing it between two towns, did that for awhile so I could finally afford some upgrades, then I forgot to refuel once and lost. :-( I think that's it for me.

Deliver Inc. | A Delivery Simulator by innocuousuk 2023-05-02T22:23:55Z

I really like the vibe and what you're aiming for here, music is fun, truck controls decently well, etc. But at the end of the day I found it almost impossible to discover where to pick up my goods (I barely noticed the compass after playing for 10 minutes and even then it often led me into killer trees I'd get stuck in). I drove around on 3 different gameplays looking for goals and each time eventually got stuck in some trees or something.

Space Express LTD by JamesW 2023-05-03T00:20:00Z

I love Master of Orion so immediately enjoyed the vibe of this. High Mood points. I think the gameplay was a bit simple, would have been nice to have a tad more to do, but I managed to beat the game and didn't get stopped by any bugs which is a big deal as far as LD goes.

Drone Delivery by uNclear Physicist 2023-05-03T00:11:39Z

Nice take on helicopter / Flappy Bird! As others mentioned, I didn't realize the box had a color on it for the building to deposit, but once I figured that out I was able to make good progress. Fun little game.

You Are The End by TooLoo 2023-05-02T05:23:27Z

Nice! Loved the atmosphere of this one. Great take on the delivery theme, it was two-fold. I think the gameplay was fine, had much more promise than you actually managed to land in the jam I think. Seemed the right solution eventually was just to sprint through every level. It was tough to predict how zombies would move and when they'd be attracted to me or not. The little events you had with zombies, like the horde coming after you, etc, was great. Loved the bittersweet ending too. Movement was a bit difficult sometimes, I fell off platforms a lot thinking I was on them due to the mix of 2D and 3D, and how far back the perspective was. I would have tilted the camera upwards a little bit more. Good entry though, great work!

Boxtopia Drifter by Joe Stack 2023-05-02T16:47:00Z

Cute! I really enjoyed that I could fling the boxes around, that was unexpected. Was the most interesting gameplay feature. Fun idea to have cars recycling boxes in the park. The controls you have listed don't seem correct for keyboard – it was WASD instead of arrows and I'm still not sure what the boost buttons etc were. Drift didn't seem to do anything either? Things are bit boring and hard at first, then after you get a few tether strength upgrades it's too easy.

If you feel like working more on this, I think there's a lot you can do to make it more interesting: β€’ Your time limit is a real bummer, it's so short there is no incentive to go very far away. I'd just triple it at least so there's more time to have fun. β€’ I really wanted to be able to dramatically fling boxes from afar into the bin, but it seems they get marked damaged once they bust off my tether. Missed opportunity? β€’ I think different RNG rules could help to add some more variety to the replays and to create a sense of progression. I could see you Frog Fractions-ing this to just get totally random and crazy.

Nice work! Really really good for a first jam game ever.
