LD30 — Connected Worlds

Worldco by awesomeusername 2014-08-26T22:55:00

I Like this. It's simple, good and I like it. Good Job :)

Acting Outcome by granut100 2014-08-26T22:59:00

This is nice. Graphics are great, quite fun, actually has some humour. Good :)

Beyond The Horizon by Lazdo 2014-08-26T23:55:00

Very nice! Would very much like to see a full Post-LD version with a bit more polish and a lot more levels, especially liked the last one, it was unexpected and tricky! Create some more, different types of levels as well! Glad I downloaded!

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-26T09:41:00

Ok, done. Thanks for advice! I'll be honest, I was confused as how to upload the whole folder as it wouldn't let me, but then I discovered I could just package it with WinRAR.

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-26T10:33:00

I'm glad you like this! Sorry about the waiting, It was going to be a dodge/shoot the asteroid minigame while waiting, and have a travelling animation, but, you know, time.

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-26T10:50:00

I'd refresh and only buy one fast engine, and a way to make money :D

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-26T13:03:00

Yeah, I get what you mean, thanks for feedback :). When I was creating the w8 function, I was quite tired (as most people are during ludum dare), so when looking back on it, I realise how inefficient it was. But at least it works. I'll change the variables now, so long as it's not cheating. Problem is, if you upgrade to max engines, there would be no wait at all, so therefore the minigame wouldn't be.

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-26T13:10:00

By the way, basic instructions are in the description. I might develop it further as a few people have requested a Post-LD version, and definitely include instructions.

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-26T23:35:00

Thanks for all the feedback! Due to the fact I spent less than 24 hours (read description), this ended up being more a concept / basic functioning core game. But as people like it, I've decided to work on it further for a Post-LD version. I opened a new Twitter account if you were interested in the concept and would like to check on the progress of a Post-LD version. All feedback helps!

WorldLink by MikeTheWayne 2014-08-27T20:19:00

Once again thanks for the advice and feedback! Will start working on a Post-LD version soon!

Gunship Diplomacy by blubberquark 2014-08-27T18:11:00

Love how you've released a game for the OUYA :) I dont have one, just like the fact people are developing things for it. Good work Sir!

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Dads Gold by Crushenator 2014-12-08T17:03:00

Very enjoyable game, controls got a bit clunky near the end, and it took me a while to figure out what the magnifying glass was for, but when I did find out, I was astonished at the amazing innovation of the idea. Too bad I couldn't rate based on innovation. However, still a great game.

Hunt the Pixel by rjhunter 2014-12-13T23:42:00

Very creative and innovative idea, matches theme perfectly, excellent music, smooth...

Brilliant, Solid Entry!

Mailman by WojWorks 2014-12-13T23:54:00

Hilarious and entertaining, with brilliant music to go along! Absolutely brilliant, love this entry!

Words War by tppr2046 2014-12-13T23:51:00

Nice game, found it particularly innovative and unique, with the traditional Chinese symbols. The controls are smooth and nice, though I had to read description to find out what they were. The music is quite nice, but after a while gets extremely repetitive and annoying.

Overall however, a solid entry! Great!

A Major Mystery by bobismijnnaam 2014-12-13T23:59:00

Funny and entertaining game! Nice animations and nice to see a mayor with a carbine rifle. Good game, too bad there's no sound.

Lead the current by Halliom 2014-12-08T16:57:00

Great game, simplistic, yet has a good strategy to it. Would've liked some audio, but it's fine, considering the time limit. However, after about turn 30, it begins to bug out. I went from turn 50 to turn 180 with one minute having -87 enemies to 390, causing it to slow down greatly. Aside from this bug, brilliant game! Spent quite a while playing it. :)

Mind Words by leffe108 2014-12-10T23:16:00

Very simplistic, but very entertaining. Not much content, though still quite a solid entry. The overall concept it brilliant and this should definitely be developed further!

Screen Takeover by MikeTheWayne 2014-12-13T23:34:00

Thank you for all the feedback, greatly appreciated! Especially rjhunter, for the assistance. I added a .jar file link, however unfortunately, after trying both methods, still was unable to add music outside of the source file. getResourceAsStream only works in non-static methods, which I've found impossible, due to having to call the method from a static method, which is also impossible. Supplying the WAV in a seperate file called "src" didn't work either, unfortunately. Any other help would be greatly appreciated, however. Thank you!

MAN vs TWITCH by KittyMac 2014-12-08T17:11:00

Absolutely brilliant game, very well made. The controls are smooth, and the whole game is humorous, especially with the twitch chat at the side. Overall, a brilliant game!

Windows Cleaner Simulator by Instant Noodles 2014-12-10T23:04:00

Very nice art style, interesting dialogues, good animations. A very nice game overall, with a clear amount of effort put into it. Wasn't too sure about the sound, however. Everything else, entertaining!

Maze of Doom by cyrixd 2014-12-10T23:10:00

I think there is a problem with my Unity Plug-in, as it keeps bugging out half the background graphics, but that doesn't affect the game. An interesting concept, definitely has potential, and though it could use more polish, was very nice to play. Still didn't manage to beat the boss though.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

The Unintentional Terrorist by MikeTheWayne 2015-04-23T07:06:00

Apologies, link is fixed now :)

The Unintentional Terrorist by MikeTheWayne 2015-04-24T21:20:00

Thank you all very much for the feedback! Apologies for lack of tutorials and explanations, unsure about the error, however.

LD33 — You are the Monster

The Migrant Crisis by MikeTheWayne 2015-08-25T11:32:00

Thanks for all the feedback, as I mentioned, nobody is being implicated as monsters, except for you, the player. I think I set the ambitions of this game a little high for the time limit, which is why it didn't turn out quite as I had hoped. This was also my first attempt at a game that involved AI and multiple moveable objects, which could also be why it didn't turn out so well. Thanks for playing anyway!

LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Reactor by MikeTheWayne 2015-12-30T22:10:00

Thank you all for your feedback! I appreciate it. Yeah, I ran out of time to fix all the logic with the money unfortunately, hoping it wouldn't wind up to be too big of an issue...

Sorry about the incorrect Russian, I'm learning at the moment, so the text in game is going off of Bulgarian, which is similar, but I think that I still got the grammar wrong.

This game does not endorse the purchase or utilisation of illegal nuclear substances! But, feel free to do as you wish...

But anyway, thanks for feedback!

The F by Atmog 2015-12-14T17:31:00

I enjoyed this game, very fun to play. There was no instruction at the beginning, though I quickly grasped the concept.

It's fast paced as well, which is nice, I really enjoy these sort of economic simulator + action games, very fun to play.

Very good job with this!

The Gun that Makes Things Bigger by rogual 2015-12-14T17:13:00

Absolutely brilliant entry, very solid. Great concept of enlarging objects, although at times caused problems and glitches, which are to be expected. Also, the first thing I did was to walk left which caused me to fall out of the world...

But aside from this, love the entry, and thought that the "Two-button is watching you" was very intelligent.

Music was amazing as well, very atmospheric.

Overall a brilliant entry, have given it mostly fives.

LD35 — Shapeshift

Rubik's Plane by markusfisch 2016-04-19T20:30:00

Love these puzzles, excellent job!

The Tale of Lapkovius by ziege 2016-04-21T19:10:00

Superb game, love the stealth aspect! Got 6960 in the end, absolutely worth playing.

ShapeShape by Jin47 2016-04-21T19:02:00

That was a tough level! Very enjoyable though, loved the music!

The Aurora Project by doomista 2016-04-18T16:21:00

The program can't start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your computer. This may be just me, but you may still want to take a look and check whether your game starts up properly.

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-04-18T16:09:00

Thank you for all of your feedback!

Yes, apologies for the slow performance, I didn't have time to work on any optimization, and just threw a bunch of stuff into the Game Loop.

I'm not sure about the text running off of the buttons, that shouldn't happen...

I've uploaded a .Zip version for anyone without a .Rar extractor.

I had some ideas to further link it with the theme, but ran out of time.

Thanks!

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-04-19T16:02:00

Hi keyboardmonkey, to fix your problem, I would go into the code and change anywhere producing that symbol to a $ sign, or just remove it entirely. Enjoy!

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-04-20T18:09:00

Hi keyboardmonkey, everything seems to be working, I think you probably need to have the 'res' folder at the same level as the .jar file, or the other source files. All of the images used for the game are in there, so I think that may be the problem. Try it out, if you have any more problems, I'd be happy to help, thanks!

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-04-21T16:40:00

I've added it to Indiexpo, enjoy!

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-04-21T19:14:00

Haven't tested it on OS X, but I think that running it on OS X is causing the UI issue, no idea why. It works fine on Windows, so I'm quite surprised to hear this...

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-04-21T19:30:00

Hi nintendoeats, thanks for the feedback! The game is supposed to be a management game at core, with the extra minigame at the side, which I felt that the game needed (right from the start of development), just to add an extra layer of depth. I'm sorry you disliked the combination, however I do see your point. Thanks, though!

Code Shift by MikeTheWayne 2016-05-06T05:58:00

Hi TheCain, I looked into this, and found that employees don't decode at night, as it should be. There is however a problem, that they don't go home like they're supposed to. I'll see if I can fix this.

Essence Run by KristophTG 2016-04-18T16:36:00

Difficult and fun game, love the retro music! Could've been made a little better (and infinite) with random map generation, but either way a well made, fun game.

When gums go out by brainstorm 2016-04-19T20:41:00

Great storytelling, reminds me of lemmings too, but with story!

Befitting Perpetual Owl by hijomo 2016-04-19T20:36:00

Once I got the hang of it, it was nice to play. Apart from the font used for the score, and the fact that nothing really seems to happen when you die, it was enjoyable!

The Shapeshifter of Castle Really Quite Likely by Wokeg 2016-04-19T16:12:00

Superbly written, utterly hilarious, thanks for this!

Quest for Humanity by pixlark 2016-04-21T19:24:00

The first time I played, the forms I could transform into didn't appear at the side, however, once I refreshed, it all worked fine, and it was quite a satisfying, if short game. I like this style of text adventure, and this game in particular was great, thanks!

Rocky by CMLSC 2016-04-18T16:27:00

Fun and innovative, good sounds, but there is still that issue of going "inside" a zombie. Great game though, love the momentum based attacking!

Geometry Evolution by Azumiar 2016-04-18T16:16:00

While the concept was directly based off of another popular game, this was very well executed, great interpretation of it. Good fun to play.

SquareShift - Sticky Squares by zugende 2016-04-19T20:56:00

Absolutely love your entry, simply fantastic, good fun, great audio (even if it is just a repetitive, yet cool beat). When you wrote in your description that it had a mix of Agar.io, I was expecting a cheap rip-off, but instead you give us this, infinitely more original! I applaud you!

LD36 — Ancient Technology

Ahab's Mystical Wagon Adventures by Franklin's Ghost 2016-09-17T11:14:00

Beautiful animations, must've taken a while! I'm personally not a big fan of point and click, but I liked this game a lot. Writing is good too!

The Bunker by MikeTheWayne 2016-09-17T18:31:00

Thanks! I had to cut a lot of my plans simply due to time, so my priorities were mainly just to get it working. I'm glad you thought it wasn't bad.

We Are Here To Help by Frederika and Patrick 2016-09-17T11:09:00

Hilarious entry, very nice! Reminds me a little of hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, this is very well written!

LD37 — One room

SkyCorridor by acotis 2016-12-21T11:55:00

Love this, beautiful music, fluid controls, and just because of the cinematic words bit at the exit, your theme score was pushed up. While it could've done with a bit of randomisation, this is a great game!

LD38 — A Small World

World Fighter by LeviDSmith 2017-05-13T19:10:37Z

Definitely... Interesting! Fun mechanics, funny animations and style, didn't really understand what was going on, but I liked it!

Daylight by conrad123 2017-05-14T12:57:47Z

Really cool, calm, fun game! Love the music, it just tops off the smooth brilliance of the game, even when it gets frustratingly challenging. Brilliant entry!

U-Turn by benjamin 2017-05-14T13:14:04Z

Really cool game, smooth controls, beautiful graphics, interesting platformer mechanics. Excellent job!

Planetary Escape by w1n5t0n 2017-05-13T19:06:56Z

Lovely game, very arcade-y feel. While the graphics and sound may not be extraordinary, the game itself is lots of fun, gets quite challenging. Even better that it's so easy to just play again once you (inevitably) lose. It would be nice to have a score, though. Brilliant job!

Planetary Escape by w1n5t0n 2017-05-13T20:55:44Z

Oh hey, here's something funny. In my previous comment I mentioned there was no score. After playing this game again on a bigger screen, I realised there was, but it was cut off by the size of my laptop screen. Sorry about that, great game!

A Perfectly Lovely Expedition by cerno-b 2017-05-14T12:35:46Z

Lovely game indeed, excellent style, pretty fun, brilliant graphics and music, fits in with the theme beautifully. Overall, an excellent entry!

Space Aliens Are Coming by RealityCheck 2017-05-14T13:06:07Z

Cool and interesting game, got a little bit repetitive, but overall well made and entertaining. Good job!

A World of Death! by tompudding 2017-05-07T10:55:34Z

Brilliant game, lovely graphics, lots of fun! So satisfying to bounce enemies off of the umbrella, but once they're in the boat, attacking them doesn't always work, and I end up dying. Great game overall, though!

Pallas Station by btwj 2017-05-13T21:03:45Z

Really cool puzzle game, could do with a bit of polish, but considering the time frame, that goes for most games. Overall though I really enjoyed it, unique and fun!

Polar Protector by AlexHoratio 2017-05-14T13:11:24Z

Lovely game, got a bit challenging (not that that's a bad thing), ended up being lots of fun! Some music would've been nice, but the smooth controls make up for that. Great work!

The Czar, the Demons and the delicious Midnight Snack by Dagegen 2017-05-14T12:49:14Z

Really cool, really humorous game, love the music. Excellent entry!

Operation: Small World by mikethewayne 2017-05-17T21:27:12Z

Hey everyone, thank you all very much for your feedback, I hugely appreciate it!

I'm glad that at least someone got the Miami Vice reference, that was pretty much the basis of this game, so thank you madjackmcmad! Unfortunately, the time frame didn't lead to a lot of development of the game itself, I mainly focused on the intros and ending, I wanted to try a story focus which I had never done before (I usually use LDs for experiments). I'm also glad that few people noticed there were no walls! That's an important thing to note: walls should be the last thing on the list, as a player's habit can fill that in.

I haven't been able to test it on a mac, I just trust Java to handle it for me, although with recent LDs I've had similar complaints from mac users. I have tried some of my LDs on macs, some seem to work, some don't, which seems odd to me.

The [T] to skip button is always active by the way, if you want to skip entire sections of the game, and get straight to the ending, etc. I used it for testing.

I'm also unaware that you could go 10 floors (If you even did ;) ), I set it to only be 4 floors, but to be honest, I didn't test this, and nor would I want to, the actual game-play part of this game was there so that there was something, but I wouldn't have wanted to sit through that myself!

To spoil the ending scene, Crockov and Tubski betray you, being undercover agents from Moscow Vice (another reference). You then have a verbal fight with them. It's a shame that nobody reached that point, though I wouldn't have expected anyone to go through the gameplay bit, hence why I left the skip button in.

If you do wish to witness the ending, press [T] again when the gameplay bit starts.

To conclude, thank you all for your brilliant feedback, It's truly empowering to receive such kind words, and extremely useful to receive your criticisms.

I hope to see everyone next Ludum Dare!

-- Michael

rocket ship by Zirrrus 2017-05-14T18:42:04Z

Pretty cool entry, I'd hate to imagine the math you put into those parabolas! Lots of fun, great game mechanics, something's probably gone wrong with the score, but other than that, brilliant entry!

Tinyverse by zener 2017-05-11T18:18:02Z

Brilliant fun, enjoyed the game a lot! The music was great, really energetic. It did end up being quite repetitive after a while, but either way, the fun physics were definitely enjoyable. Excellent game!

Advanced Mitosis by Endurion 2017-05-14T12:32:18Z

Really interesting and fun puzzle game, made my laptop scream for air for some reason, but either way, I like it!

Mr. UN and the small world village by JulianMH 2017-05-14T18:50:17Z

Absolutely love this game! Really fun mechanics, nice to have upgrades, satisfying to convert followers, and the general style of the game is just brilliant. The music right at the end is fantastic too. Great Game!

Life of an Ant by Connor McGrory 2017-05-14T18:55:55Z

Really nice game, calm, relaxing, and nothing is better than ant-puns. Hope your brain is OK!

Islands in Equilibrium by NekuSoul 2017-05-14T18:34:43Z

Brilliant puzzle game, reminds me of Conway's game of life (not a game, more a mathematical algorithm), really great mechanics, gets challenging too. Multiple tile placement would be nice, though. Great job overall!

Defend the Earth by Scrumplesplunge 2017-05-14T15:43:28Z

Love how you can keep playing after Earth is killed, the game has fun arcade-y space mechanics, and I don't mind the shooting mechanics too much. Overall, very fun game!

Polar Conflict by Jaenis 2017-05-14T18:38:05Z

Brilliant arcade game, lots of fun, excellent music, love the art style, even if it is basic. Solid entry, for sure!

LD39 — Running out of Power

Power Plant Manager by Josh6680 2017-08-13T08:46:39Z

What a game! Reminded me a little of cookie clicker, only your game is far better. Love the wire-mesh graphics, also how the background darkens with pollution. About pollution though, Natural gas should produce less than oil, which should produce less than coal. Have you never played SimCity 4? :D

I didn't find it too unbalanced, at least at the start of the game, but I guess I'm running it on a slower computer (although your game's processing shouldn't run differently based on hardware, that isn't great, but it is tough to deal with). I also liked how the more population there was, the more difficult it was to achieve your power goal. Also, what was the reason for the power goal? I thought it would've been an end-game thing, but the game didn't end, so I decided I'd go for another goal: to reach MAX_INT on power goal (about 2,147,000,000), in the aims to crash the program!

I started out the game with a few wind turbines until I could afford a nuclear reactor, which then overheated, so I bought a few coal factories. Eventually, I could buy more nuclear reactors, this time with cooling towers. 4 power plants later, and I achieved the power goal, which didn't satisfy me. This is when I decided to go for overflowing the program. First using the power of the gods, then pyramids, I could finally afford an energy nexus. So I filled the map with them. About 20 minutes and a cup of coffee later, I had got to 2 billion on the power goal, and with the final press of the "2" button... Alas, the game did not crash...

What a brilliant entry, though, I really enjoyed it, only way to improve it is to improve the balance a little!

You Discharge, You Lose by boddiul 2017-08-19T08:49:37Z

Seriously fun game. Got to 90 seconds on my third attempt, this is a really cool platformer, where you have to think ahead and manage your resources (in this case, power), which you can charge anywhere, but not for too long else the wall of death gets you! This is some of the best game design I've seen in a long while, and even better execution. Fantastic job!

LOW BATT by simonhutchinson 2017-08-18T07:56:22Z

Amazing experience, brilliant music, no matter how you play the game it sounds amazing. Brilliant entry!

Demonic Powers by gilborn 2017-08-18T08:17:03Z

Reminds me of Hotline Miami, this is a really fun game, great music and sound effects, not to mention the brilliant gameplay. Truly a fantastic entry!

Death's Helper by jondalnas 2017-08-13T07:33:49Z

Pretty cool game, reminds me of a game "Risk of Rain". The controls were smooth (I don't have a middle mouse button, but oh well), the game played well, and that combination made it fun to play, I enjoyed it. The power bar drained fast, but I found that made the game even more fun, adding that aspect of tension. That last struggle feature, very innovative, and added that extra bit of necessary time to stay in the game, especially cool with the slow-mo. I'd say that if it weren't in the game, death would be a lot more infuriating!

The walls were a little broken, but it's understandable, I find walls time consuming to properly implement, and in fact in the last LD I didn't include them at all (nobody noticed as it was a top down 2D game, I guess they're a bit more noticable in a side scrolling platformer). Either way, I managed just fine by staying away from them.

Overall, this is a game I enjoyed playing, some minor faults, but they can be overlooked, especially with the additional cool features.

Lights Out by PhoenixofForce 2017-08-13T10:21:09Z

Nice, short little game, loved it! Would've been great if it had more levels to it, but as a core game, works well and is fun to play. At one point, I somehow got -15 keys, but still managed to leave the game regardless. Either way, a great entry!

Dear Leader's Love Powered Peace Bomb by Zyzzyzzyz 2017-08-19T08:48:45Z

Brilliant game, love the theme of your game, very funny and topical. The graphics of your game are amazing too, I especially love the colours that the screen turn when you explode. Music is great too, added a whole lot to the game. Also, having to install the game isn't great in Ludum Dare, but I got around this by installing to desktop. Overall though, a brilliant entry!

< Mr. Plug > by Drachmor 2017-08-17T09:28:51Z

Really cool, fun, complete game! Not only have you got fun and a variety of levels and mechanics going through the levels, you've also got a complete story with a brilliant ending. Made me feel emotion. Great mood, loved this game. Fantastic work!

Save My Phone by TheLucky 2017-08-13T07:56:34Z

Really fun game, it's a classic endless runner, but it's very well executed, and I love the powerups / powerdowns (see what I did there?). Overall, very well done on this entry, I enjoyed it.

LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Rocket Express! by wizzardMaker 2017-12-10T19:20:25Z

Really cool game, fun idea, works fantastic. Didn't really do very good, even after a few tries I was still messing up, but I had fun doing it, and that's what counts!

Overkill Redux by Iak 2017-12-10T18:52:56Z

Nice game, the mechanics work well and the controls were smooth, resulting in an enjoyable experience. The music was excellent, even if it was quite basic, it sounded brilliant. Good work overall!

Asteroid gravity by Psilon 2017-12-10T18:58:01Z

Excellent gravity mechanics and lovely idea behind it; made for an enjoyable game. Sounds were a little annoying, verging on painful, but at least they were there :) . The controls were brilliant, made the whole experience a lot more fun. Overall, a pretty brilliant game!

Power Overwhelming by Pecolyte 2017-12-13T17:22:18Z

Once I figured out how to play, I found it to be greatly enjoyable, very innovative core game mechanic. Nearly completed the last level, but I got blown up within a bubble, and it wouldn't let me reset. Anyhow, it was still a very enjoyable experience. An excellent game!

GLORIOUS INTERNET POINTS by Ale 2017-12-11T21:40:12Z

Got 2000 followers for eating a burger :D .

Really solid game, great design, good graphics. Fun gameplay too, fits in nicely with the theme. I do like the whole 'selling data' side of the game, and the humour surrounding it, 'it's not our fault they haven't read the privacy policy' - brilliant!

Overall, a solid, enjoyable game, really great work!

A Space Hitchhiking Game by mikethewayne 2017-12-05T16:45:21Z

Hi there! I fixed a few things under the pretext that it is a change to help people play the game, without changing the game itself, which is allowed post-LD. The black dot is now visible in space (although it isn't meant to be able to move into space, that's just an unfinished part of the game), and the help has been updated to explain what the needs are. Thanks for your feedback!

Cybercage Battleground by makiki99 2017-12-13T17:32:22Z

Really cool game, favourited this one! I really enjoyed playing it, fun mechanics, well executed, a brilliant entry. Didn't really see how it fit in with the theme, but overall, a very nice entry.

LD42 — Running out of space

Endless Game by gmaker 2018-08-26T12:56:34Z

This is what 5-star music sounds like! Brilliantly put together, controls are spot-on, with how your character slides around. At first, I was a bit wary of the enemies, until I ran into one, and it produced a satisfying particle effect as it popped out of existance. I have to say, while it's a great way of keeping score, perhaps if they actually paralysed you for half a second, it would make the game more difficult and intense? Just a thought, I like it this way all the same.

Overall, a fantastic entry, with absolutely stunning audio!

Gravity Hook by GlacierEclipse 2018-08-20T13:28:08Z

Extremely fun, perfectly executed pendulum physics, fantastic level design, and satisfying dings as a bonus. I felt like I was developing a skill; at the start of the game, I was inept to say the least, but as the game progressed, I was certainly becoming a lot better, which was necessary, as the levels were becoming a lot more difficult. You nailed the level progression, is what I'm saying here.

Music would've been a nice addition, but I can hardly complain, and it's clear where all your time went in this entry! An idea with the music is that it plays while you're in oxygenated areas, which then settles into silence as you enter space.

Aside from the music, and a few bugs here and there, it's hard to fault this entry at all! Very entertaining game to play, brilliant job for a 48-hour challenge!

The Infinite Hotel by mikethewayne 2018-08-16T21:19:19Z

Yep, all done! A few years back, I always uploaded .zip files, until someone asked for .rar files. From then on, I only uploaded .rar, assuming it was more standard. Looks like I'll have to upload both from now on!

The Infinite Hotel by mikethewayne 2018-08-19T12:13:14Z

Thanks for all of your feedback! I'm amazed you managed to build up to 40 floors, I should've made the game a bit more difficult ;) ! No idea why pictures aren't showing up, is the /res folder in the same location as the .jar? I'll look into it more, but I can't seem to replicate the problem...

The Infinite Hotel by mikethewayne 2018-08-19T13:42:18Z

I'm also using java 1.8.0, so that should be working. Again, I have no clue what's causing all of these issues, I've used the same methods I always use in these LDs, no idea why it's all of a sudden started messing up, and it doesn't help that I can't replicate the issues myself! I'll have to wait for more information to come through, before I can figure out what's going wrong.

The Infinite Hotel by mikethewayne 2018-08-20T21:10:45Z

@frank-gevaerts You might well have fixed the issue, I can't believe I made that mistake! I'm also confused as to why it isn't causing any problems on my machine. Either way, thanks so much, wish I could give you more karma than just the 1!

I always try to use a portable font, but I didn't really think about it this LD, sorry! I'll make sure to keep it in mind for next time.

I had planned to make the people walk at different speeds, but I ticked it off my list as soon as the staff walked faster, and just forgot about it! You're right though, I could definitely see how that would help make the game seem a bit more interesting.

Thanks for all of your feedback, it's all great to read!

The Infinite Hotel by mikethewayne 2018-08-26T22:15:50Z

Thank you for your feedback! I had planned for button animations and more indicators, but I started this LD a bit too late to implement these, though I do understand their importance. The game balance was the hardest part to get right, and while it is a lot better now than it was, say, 2 hours before the end of the compo, the game isnt quite as challenging as I had hoped it would turn out. This is the reason, by design, that you can't fire employees, and you can't re-increase the cost per night; the game was designed to try and make you struggle a bit financially, so that you would end up taking desparate measures, until eventual bankruptcy set in, meaning only more skilled players would manage to construct a high-level hotel. But alas, game balancing is a huge challenge, and although it isn't as I designed, I am happy with how it turned out. Maybe I'll improve it with a post-LD at some point!

The Infinite Hotel by mikethewayne 2018-08-30T08:09:47Z

Thanks for your feedback! @saoi-games I tried to make it as easy to understand as possible within the 24 hours, and there was a tutorial screen at the start that outlined pretty much all of the gameplay, it works as pretty much a standard tycoon-esque game, but I understand that more feedback would've been helpful. @lumos I apologize, I don't have anywhere near a 4K screen, so I can't comment! I always restrict the resolution of my LD games to fit on a laptop screen, ensuring it'll work on both laptops and higher definition displays, but I admit, the game must've seemed quite small on a 4K display! The game does not scale, I turned that off as I don't want to have to deal with that in this time frame, so the buttons certainly wouldn't work if you did scale it. If you didn't, are you using a mac? I've heard about portability issues when using MouseListeners and fixed-resolution jars, so it's entirely possible this has occurred. If so, I will attempt to sort it out as best as I can.

Lost by Endurion 2018-08-19T12:45:58Z

Game is a lot of fun, brilliant movement controls, matches the theme perfectly, and has some interesting mechanics going on behind the scenes. Personally, I believe that the game could be made more enjoyable if it gave you a score, or some measure of how well you're doing. Overall though, fantastic and fun!

Reply All by Dilem 2018-08-19T13:15:58Z

Fun, funny, and frustrating! I loved the dialogue that took place while you were working, provided a very real office atmosphere, with all the 'reply all' conversations. Great take on the theme too, running out of memory space, very nice implementation there, especially with the whole 'you're fired if you fill up the RAM', which actually sounds like something that a technically-illiterate boss in the 90s would've fired you for! The ads were appropriately frustrating, with an actual good reason behind their appearance (that damned Bob), but there was always the red button in the corner to make it all go away. Of course, your progress would then be wiped and you'd have to start again, but at least it's a mistake that you (I) only make once. Overall, very fun and good-humoured game, well deserving of high ratings!

M3 (working title) by Jyrms 2018-08-20T12:59:32Z

Fantastic game, it's a simple concept, yet it matches the theme perfectly! It was fun to play, easy to figure out what to do, and had reasonably entertaining music. It would be nice to get extra score if you manage to get a horizontal line of the same colour, which I managed to do in the hope of extra score, but maybe that's not what you were after?

Overall, a brilliant, complete game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing!

RoboCoup by Nyri0 2018-08-19T12:38:10Z

Fascinating game, brings up some interesting issues, especially considering advancements in robotics; perhaps we may have to deal with the problems proposed in this game in the not too distant future? The hand-drawn graphics were superb (must've taken a while!), the dialogue was interesting enough, but I'd agree with some of the previous commenters, in that perhaps (given more time) you could have the ability to make proper moral decisions, such as allowing, or even aiding, some humans to escape.

From a mechanical viewpoint, it was very cool how the apartments are hidden away until you actually step into them; it makes sense, but it's good to see it being implemented on a short timescale, and I think it definitely adds to the game experience. I also enjoyed using the lift far too much, with the little satisfying 'ding', but maybe that's just me (I'm biased towards any game that has a working lift).

I also couldn't use 1, 2, and 3 on Mozilla. 'a', 'b', and 'c' all worked fine, but it was awkward using them, as they are scattered in different locations on the keyboard, maybe using 'a', 's', and 'd' would've worked better, but I do appreciate what you were doing by providing an alternative to the number pad.

Overall however, a short, but fantastic entry!

cargOS by tigerj 2018-08-19T12:57:13Z

I really enjoyed this game, reminded me a bit of Tetris, in a certain way. The game matches the theme perfectly, a cargo company was IMO a fantastic take on the theme. I think you were a bit generous with the amount of health, I reckon this game would've worked just as well, if not better (if you consider more tension to be better) with instant failure. Still, I thought that the crane mechanism was fantastic, in that it actually took time to move things further away, so even if you weren't running out of space in the whole facility, you were still running out of space that is close enough to move objects to the teleporters quickly. Overall, a brilliant game, very deserving of high ratings!

PhoneBreaker by Daniel Rincon 2018-08-20T13:09:23Z

Great concept, fantastic execution, game works perfectly and is fun to play. Even has entertaining music too, which I found to be a bonus! It would've been a nice addition to the game if you'd implemented a score at the end, such as total messages deleted, or time survived, and perhaps some concept of progression; if your phone lasts till next year, maybe you get a new, better one, which extends the time until your eternal fate of a broken phone, allowing you to get a higher score? But considering the limited time frame, this is an excellent game which I thoroughly enjoyed!

Running out of Platformers by Aret24 2018-08-19T13:34:34Z

Fun platformer game with great physics and cute character art! I did see the closing walls once, on the first level because I *cough*fell off*cough*, but I didn't feel that it anything to the game. It could've been a brilliant implementation of the theme if, instead of falling to your death, you fell into a pit that would've taken time to get back out of, increasing the chance that the walls would close in on you. This way, the game would've appropriately punished you for your mistakes, making it more tense if you did mess up, instead of merely placing you back at the start to 'try again', without penalty. It would still be giving you a chance to complete the level, only it would be more difficult, as the walls would be much closer, plus it would've tied in with the theme, as you'd then have less room to work with. But that is just a suggestion on how to improve it. For your first Ludum Dare, you've created a fantastic platformer that's complete and fully functional, has brilliant level design with difficulty that progresses perfectly, and isn't short of levels, either. Overall, an admirable platformer!

Running out of S.P.A.C.E. by Frank Gevaerts 2018-08-20T13:48:35Z

An interesting text adventure game, quite difficult, but entertaining as hell once you figure out what you need to do. I'll admit, I did have to check the solution to find out I actually had to pick up the space, that was clever. The text was well written, and eventually finding the correct solution was very satisfying. I especially enjoyed "screw astronomer" --> "they might not like that", top marks on humour for that one! It definitely could've used a help command, that would've made the game a bit easier to play, but overall, I found it to be a very entertaining and well put together text adventure game!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Mission to Io by DeathBySnail 2018-12-09T18:29:55Z

Wow. That genuinely gave me chills. This is a fantastically executed text game; the interface is satisfying to use, the text appears at a readable speed, and the music complements it perfectly. The sounds matching the events added immensely to the atmosphere. Brilliant game! I managed to survive by the way, set the ship's course to Mars. Is that the best ending possible?

Gifts for Satan by patvanmackelberg 2018-12-20T02:13:12Z

Very cool game, I had a lot of fun with this one! It's so simple in terms of input, you merely have to press the spacebar, but it's all in the timing of the presses. The problem with many 'simple input' games is the balance, too often things either get too difficult too quickly, or they never become difficult, unless you're inept and can't press a button. You however, managed to get the balance just right, in my opinion. Sure, by the end of it, you're mashing the spacebar because the nearest kid might be a while away, but the balance comes with trying to train enough soldiers before the armies from hell pop out, and you got this balance just right!

The problem, as others have pointed out, was with the kids' AI, constantly getting stuck on buildings. This seemed to resolve itself eventually, as the armies of hell would do me a favour (or, I suppose, themselves a favour) by destroying the buildings that were in the way, so that I could continue sacrificing. In that sense, you managed to balance away the problem! The AI getting stuck is still an issue though, and should be resolved if you work on this further (which you absolutely should, it's great fun!!).

Overall, a fantastic game, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it through to the end! Watching my village grow, and then be almost completely destroyed by the end, it was a beautiful cycle! I was victorious, by the way, but only just; my last soldier managed to win the game for me :D .

The Final Seconds by mikethewayne 2018-12-09T21:01:54Z

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback!

No progress bars was purposeful. You're not meant to know how close your officers are to diffusing the bomb, plus it adds to the tension. If you can clearly see that an officer will diffuse the bomb before the time is up, you won't sacrifice them. The decision to sacrifice isn't supposed to be a logical, calculated decision, it's meant to be an on-the-spot decision. For example, it's 20 seconds till detonation, and you've got a slow officer working on a bomb. They may finish on time, they may not. You have to make the decision, whether to let them finish and potentially succeed, risking the lives of everyone at that location including the officer, or to sacrifice the officer, saving the civilians, but with certainty of sacrificing the officer.

As for the bomb codes, this was a decision I was torn on. It does seem to take away from the game, that you're forced to either memorise or write down letters, but it also adds a bit of realism, and adds purpose to the briefings. In reflection, it would've been better to add a little note in the corner of the screen with the code there, as needing to write down something doesn't add to a game, I appreciate that. For now, I'd recommend just writing the codes down in a text file, or on your phone. Not ideal, I know.

@bastilo I haven't experienced the bomb screen issue, perhaps you're attempting to diffuse a bomb you've already sent an officer to? I've done that on purpose, decision to send an officer to a bomb is a final decision once they reach the bomb. It means you have to think about which officer you're going to send, or even whether you want to send out an officer at all.

Thanks again!

The Final Seconds by mikethewayne 2018-12-17T21:55:38Z

Thank you all again for your excellent feedback! Yeah, the beep was a last-minute addition, I knew I couldn't go without sound for this game, but equally I didn't have time for music. These are fantastic ideas for how to use the beep to create tension, I will definitely take them on board if I end up making a post-LD!

@tanis the officers aren't you, they diffuse the bomb in their own time. You only diffuse the bombs you drive yourself to, perhaps I should've made that a bit clearer, maybe some indication that the other officers are diffusing...

Thanks everyone!

The Final Seconds by mikethewayne 2018-12-23T15:10:54Z

Thank you for your feedbacks, I'm very glad you enjoyed my game!

The game was supposed to be teeth-grindingly difficult, I wanted the bomb diffusal to be as realistic as possible, as in: you mess up, you're dead. Game over. I admit, it's a bit brutal, but it's so there's a big penalty to messing up.

I'm not surprised that the game hanged after day 6, I started to notice the game being a little unstable near the later stages of the game, however I didn't have enough time to fix... It certainly was meant to continue to day 7! I managed to play through to the end myself, but it did start to have trouble in the last couple of days. The beep was very last minute, so I completely agree with you, the use of TripleOscillator should've proven that!

I am extremely pleased I made it onto your favourites this time, thank you!

Garden of Frogs by jotson 2018-12-09T17:56:28Z

The art style is absolutely adorable, beautifully done. The gameplay is interesting in concept, needing to balance the number of frogs with the number of fruit on the tree, but does get a little repetitive when played on a computer. As many other commenters have pointed out, it would definitely work a lot better on mobile. The audio is very well put together too, a brilliant calm and relaxing backing track to your game. What I am most curious about however, is how you came up with the idea. Asexual frogs that need to grow balloons in order to gather fruit from trees? Marvelous idea, if a little bonkers! Fantastic job though!

ChosenProtector by Suchista 2018-12-16T21:52:06Z

Fantastic game! I really appreciated the irony in protecting these 'poor' sacrifices. The game itself was fun to play, the difficulty curves nicely, and the AI works fantastically. It almost had a tower defence vibe, I suppose in a way it was the other way around! What's even better is that you had a variety in difficulty levels (I went straight for hard, of course, and lost eventually), really good job on this game!

LD44 — Your life is currency

Heat of the Star by mikethewayne 2019-05-09T11:01:42Z

Thank you all for your kind feedback!

@jlv yeah I'll admit, I should've tutorialised a bit better. Maybe in a Post-LD version! And yep, the sextant works, just not quite as it would in real life, I didn't have quite enough time to simulate an actual sextant, so I decided to use it as a way of determining your latitude on the map. If you have a watch too (displays your longitude), the highest tier of sextant will accurately show your map location, whereas the lowest tier of sextant has little use. I'm very glad you enjoyed playing!

Heat of the Star by mikethewayne 2019-05-16T20:25:18Z

Thank you all again for your feedback!

I believe that the watch should work without the sextant, maybe something went wrong there...

I had far more plans for the traders out in the desert, such as being able to sell your own items for water, and also having a (much) more balanced system. I think at the moment, only 25% of traders will want less than 100% your starting water, so water barrels are a must! I tried to balance them by making them more expensive, and without camels, they give you a movement penalty (and you can only carry one), though the system can definitely be better.

I'm very impressed you played for so long, and even found the treasure! Cheers for putting so much time into my game, I hope you enjoyed it!

Lifarm by Naruvan 2019-05-05T20:10:15Z

A great take on the theme! Having to balance between planting, or rather 'investing' your health for later, and having a health bar was a tough, yet rewarding job. It was a choice between either having riskier early levels, or virtually impossible later levels! My only criticism would be with the fact that nothing's stopping you from accidentally planting too much of your health within the planting stage; on more than one occasion I ended up accidentally killing myself because of pressing space once too many times. But that is just a small criticism, overall I very much enjoyed playing your game!

Blood Mage: Human Sacrifice by tdg_ 2019-05-08T18:47:25Z

Fantastic take on the theme, you've created a very well balanced game! The controls are a bit of a pain to get used to, and I'd love a score at the end, but other than that, I have no complaints! I absolutely loved the music, especially the fact that you managed two, brilliant sounding (even if simple) music tracks. Excellent job!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Bob Ross Adventure by Goutye 2018-04-29T16:26:24Z

Disappointed by the lack of happy little trees, but an astounding entry nonetheless! Fun, funny, great music, and an excellent take on the theme makes this entry absolutely brilliant. Great job!

The Black Market of Fun by mikethewayne 2018-04-28T15:56:08Z

Thanks for your feedback! I'm not sure why it runs badly, if I get any more complaints on that I'll see if I can sort it out. I decided to keep time flowing during deals to keep the urgency, but I made sure that the police can't see you while making deals, otherwise it would be too difficult. Also, going to work was meant to be tedious :) and there's no penalty for not achieving your quota, though admittedly I didn't think to add a skip to end button, or to make it a little less tedious.

The Black Market of Fun by mikethewayne 2018-04-28T19:26:46Z

More feedback, thank you all very much! Funnily enough, the police are ramped up over time, but maybe I start off with too many? That's something I'll note down. As for the balancing, I tried to have it difficult at the start, but as you gained money, you could get into more profitable items. Again, I wanted the game to be brutal, but maybe I made it too brutal, something else to work on. I'll definitely need to look into this glitch, your work and apartment are in two different places, it shouldn't happen even if the last letter was E. I include a runnable .jar file, and as it's the only file in the folder, I would've thought people would just click on that? Maybe not, but I find that .exe files are generally treated with suspicion. Maybe next time, I'll also include an .exe file just to start the program, along with a runnable .jar.

The game that bad that it is actually good???!!! by Peta 2018-04-28T16:27:00Z

Never thought I'd ever get to hear the national anthem of the Soviet Union sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks, but here we have it! Controls were a bit dodgy to begin with, but I got the hang of them pretty quickly. I also didn't see how it fit in with the theme, but you've explained that already :). Seeing as you only made this in 5 hours, it's good fun for what it is. Nice job!

Flappy Word Worm Bird by andwhatnotetc 2018-04-28T22:51:15Z

Loved this entry, took me a while to get a hang of, but once I did, it was actually really fun, got a high score of 73 in the end! Goes with the theme perfectly, too. Sound would've made it better for sure, even some simplistic effects would've made a difference, but for what it is, it's a very fun game.

Fishing Fighters by Lucnatber 2018-05-12T12:55:57Z

This game genuinely made me laugh! Not only was it fun to play, with well-designed fishing mechanics and smooth fighting controls (though the hitboxes were a bit off), but it also incorporated a fantastic animation as the fight scenes began, when you discover that you're fighting a ridiculous fish/man creature. Overall, a fantastic entry that I enjoyed playing a lot!
