LD49 — Unstable

Death?Box by wafflesys 2021-10-16T19:15:10Z

Interesting main character sprite and congrats on finishing your first jam entry! Sounds like you're already aware of the main issue: it would be fun to figure out a way so that the difficulty increases as you go on instead of decreasing. Still an interesting concept, though.

Nuclear Guy by jessekaz 2021-10-14T04:22:13Z

Took a second for me to figure out the controls, but after I got going, I kinda liked the crazy jump physics! The first level was the only one that really felt like a proper level to me, but I'd be interested to see what the idea will look like when it's more fleshed out.

Dizzard Wizzard by ryjcio 2021-10-16T19:36:47Z

Cool game! I liked the funky spellcasting mechanics, though I did find it super hard to line things up so that you were facing an enemy. Might be better if the enemies had less health. Really enjoyed the presentation, though, with the sound and graphics!

Derpy the Unicorn by Vodzik 2021-10-07T02:22:30Z

lol, so THIS is what that Led Zeppelin song is about... Fun game! Definitely reminded me of an earlier era on the internet. Wanted to co-sign @unbansheee's point about the camera: it feels wildly oversensitive to me. But otherwise a very charming game.

CalmR - Rock Skipping Mindfulness by Eli Delventhal 2021-10-07T03:17:16Z

+1 to @ultrarat's comment: I also had trouble downloading, but that fixed it. Also, on my first attempt, I accidentally threw myself off the platform. Turns out the rocks let you rocket jump if you look down with them, lol. Bugs aside, it was a fun little experience with a nice atmosphere!

Radiopathic by Tsunscreen 2021-10-07T03:03:39Z

Ahaha, I saw "the car can be flipped" and with the driving took that as a challenge rather than a warning, lol. I really liked this vehicle (as it were) for storytelling. Steering is a little wonky for sure, but the atmosphere is great and I enjoyed it!

Meltdown by Roka Josh 2021-10-16T19:01:40Z

One of my favorites so far! Really likes the way it balances multiple tasks. Got stuck on the part with ??? but otherwise felt like it was very well balanced.

Cawtastrophe by crefossus 2021-10-07T01:53:38Z

lol, love the Cawtastic/Cawtastrophe sound effects. Music was great too. Overall, it was a lot of fun just seeing how the physics would work. Agreed with @laurenceogden that if you ever want to expand the concept it might be interesting to introduce some different types of objects.

Candy Quota: Halloween Harvest by travm 2021-10-07T01:47:14Z

Interesting idea! I loved the bounciness of the movement and the especially the ladder climbing animation. Overall, movement felt pretty tight in general. It would be fun if there was more to do, but I know you're kinda limited with the jam time constraints!

Unstable mage by Trizalio 2021-10-18T20:37:23Z

This is a really interesting idea! I like the way the different creatures interact with each other. Just wanted to echo @stanroy's comment that sometimes spell descriptions didn't pop up correctly. Otherwise, very enjoyable!

Yeetr by timon 2021-10-16T19:10:51Z

Fun game! Yeah, I can confirm that even even my fairly recent computer really struggles with the full spec version, but low spec is a noticeable improvement. I like the puzzles, though!

The ApprenDice by ChuChuGeralt 2021-10-14T03:58:58Z

Interesting game! The mechanics are a little opaque if you don't read the instructions on this page--might be cool to try to incorporate some sort of in-game tutorial if you ever expand on the idea. But very polished and fun once you get the hang of it!

Fourth Energy by Johnsensei 2021-10-06T01:06:53Z

Sound and music are great! Very dynamic for a text-based game. Definitely a lot of variety with the choices you can make. My biggest piece of feedback is that it's very easy when you're skipping through previously seen text to accidentally click on a choice you didn't mean to.

c0rrup73d by ArtoniX 2021-10-07T02:01:04Z

Really cool concept! That glitchy level transitions are one of my favorite interpretations of the theme so far. Even some simple background music would definitely add some atmosphere, though the other sound effects were appropriately blippy.

Sire Sleipnir by Klosterliv 2021-10-07T01:40:45Z

Ahaha, this is probably my favorite interpretation of "Unstable" so far! Nice writing (although it would help if the font wasn't, like, size 4, lol). Also, for me the game froze whenever I approached a large group of people. But overall a fun little game.

Dimensional Degradation by Ty Victorson 2021-10-14T04:06:00Z

Yeah, the other comments are right on the money. Definitely the start of something cool, but the lack of sound and the lack of feedback to tell whether an enemy has been hit or not make it difficult to play. The instability meter is a fun idea, though, and could have potential!

Cursed Cauldron of Calamity by Elias Manzaneda 2021-10-14T04:31:22Z

I really liked the hand-drawn art! I know you were on a time crunch, but it might've been cool to see that style used even more (for example if all the instructional notes were in handwriting). Would also be cool if the cauldron color changed to match the different potions. Still really enjoyed the overall style, though, and particularly the music.

Unstable Hunger by pedrocoden 2021-10-16T19:29:54Z

Cool and funny aesthetic, but the combat is definitely kinda wonky. At the very least, enemies should probably die in fewer hits. Congrats on finishing, though!

Rickety Ranch by GreenXenith 2021-10-07T01:13:34Z

Aha, this game rules! I agree that there's room to improve the hitboxes and that even some simple audio would really help the game pop. But the animations are hilarious and I love the overall style.

Glitches & Bridges by Conneli 2021-10-06T00:55:06Z

Great music! The central mechanic is deceptively deep. By level 3, there were so many enemies on the screen that it was really starting to lag for me. Also, sometimes it's hard to tell if you're lined up correctly to walk on a platform or if you'll go off the edge. Fun otherwise, though!

Civil Unrest! by JammyGunns 2021-10-07T03:54:46Z

Yeah, really like the board game presentation. The flat art style definitely gives kind of a dystopian police state vibe. I do want to echo other players' feedback that it's hard to tell what's going on sometimes, but it sounds like you're already aware of the biggest issues. Good luck!

Toilet paper ! by Slavi 2021-10-15T22:22:07Z

lol, this is awesome! very innovative idea. TBH, that roll of toilet paper gives a better performance than 90% of actors in FMV games.

SANCTITY Compliant Yggdrasil Worldship by alyd asmar 2021-10-07T01:26:44Z

This is amazing! Really creative concept and executed perfectly. The only thing I'd suggest is maybe updating the part on this page about requiring a printer to match what you wrote on the itch.io page: while a printer definitely makes the game easier, it's totally doable with a PDF reader and some Sanctity-Compliant markup, lol

(DE)BUGGER by PossiblyAxolotl 2021-10-14T04:40:31Z

I liked it! You took a simple concept and made some interesting levels with it. The reverse gravity zones were used in some pretty clever ways. Could be cool if the surrounding world had a little more personality to it, but I know you were on a time crunch with the jam. Overall, this one was fun!

New World Disorder by xpoho 2021-10-07T02:09:16Z

Interesting concept! For what it's worth, I actually had no problems downloading and made it to the end no problem. I kind of liked how it was disorienting and you had to guess how the controls worked. The pace of the story did feel a little rushed, but obviously that's because of the jam's time constraint!

Rise of the Emoji by LaurenceOgden 2021-10-07T02:33:02Z

Yes, just want to add to any players that it's definitely worth sticking with it to see the ending, lol. I actually really like the puzzle aspect and was able to understand all the sentences (though some with difficulty!) It might be interesting if you could do questions that relied less on pop culture/trivia knowledge so that the focus is really on how well a player can read the language. Some audiovisual bells and whistles could be fun too. Overall, though, a nicely crafted puzzler and I enjoyed it!

UKI by Shea Kelly 2021-10-14T04:12:40Z

I like the bold pixel style and particularly the music. Unfortunately, I did fall off the edge and get stuck twice against the first boss, lol. Seems like a cool concept once you figure out the glitches, though!

Hot Potato by Bobi505 2021-10-07T03:36:36Z

I enjoyed it! Definitely felt like the part where you have to click to stop it in the specific zone was harder than the other challenges, but overall, there was a fun variety. The music also really helped add some intensity. A fun idea!

Unstable Memories by potkirland 2021-10-07T03:42:51Z

Yeah, sorry, just wanted to add I also couldn't figure out the stabilization part. Cool graphics, though, and I liked the music.

High-Rise Havoc by Kyrell 2021-10-07T03:23:43Z

Simple little platformer with nice music. Had one or two issues where it felt like my press of the jump button wasn't being registered but otherwise fairly tight. Might be fun to add some visual flair to make it look more like an office building instead of just using generic bricks.

Home Tripper by Lemonthunder 2021-10-08T01:45:24Z

Hey! This is awesome! FWIW, I used Edge as a browser and the sound worked perfectly with no crashes or anything. Toaster was my first ending, although I definitely stuck around to find the others. I liked the little ads in the GUI and can see a feature like that being versatile enough to be used in a lot of other fun ways too.

Wobbly Cannonry by LucDeligne 2021-10-07T02:43:08Z

Love this central mechanic! Very fun and simple idea that fits the theme well. My only suggestion (other than adding audio) is that it might be cool if there was more of a "story" to it (not, like cutscenes or whatever, just some sort of theme that explains why cannons are falling from the sky, lol). Really cool idea, though!

Carrying A Microwave Down 3rd Ave by Yoss III 2021-10-07T16:24:20Z

Thanks everyone for the comments so far!

@yojammerjammer: oh hey, I didn't recognize your current username but I obviously remember playing your stuff from Lemmasoft too! Didn't realize you were in this jam! I'll have to check it out--I'm curious to see how other people did story-driven games in such a short time period

@yodog: I actually use a Mac too and sometimes the security settings flag downloads from itch.io. Usually if you right click (or CTRL + click) on the application file and open it that way, it'll work. Sometimes it also helps to move the whole unzipped folder from Downloads into Applications. Another possibility is the file got corrupted somehow, in which case you might be able to fix it by downloading a fresh copy. If none of that works, though, let me know!

@dalep: What you gather is completely correct, lol

@ollieoa: lol, if I could afford a VR headset, that'd be top priority!

@joel-davis: you're not wrong, lol. It's definitely more of a walking sim/idle game than a proper game-y game. Would love to see the speedrunning community take a crack at it though, ha ha

@xpoho: Я не говорю по-русски, так что это гугл в переводе, лол. Спасибо за игру! Возможно, вам понравится моя другая игра про холодильник, которая есть на моем сайте itch.io

Carrying A Microwave Down 3rd Ave by Yoss III 2021-10-07T20:03:18Z

@eli-delventhal: Thanks for that error report. Since you're the second person to report a problem, I created a new build specifically for Macs. Hopefully this solves it! If you happen to see this message, would you mind telling me which OS you're on (Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, etc.)?

Carrying A Microwave Down 3rd Ave by Yoss III 2021-10-10T20:46:57Z

Thanks so much to everyone who's had a chance to play and rate since the last time I commented!! To answer some specific questions:

@wedgiebee: Unfortunately, I think you must've gotten unlucky, lol: all the sound effects are randomly generated each time and are weighted the same. You're right, though--some are definitely mixed a little louder than others. I think if I'd had more time, I'd either turn down the loud ones a little or maybe weight the probability so that the loudest ones are less frequent.

@mrarc: I really wanted to do an HTML5 version too! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it to work so far. The problem is basically that the game involves a lot of fairly big image files shown fairly quickly, so they don't load right. When I tried making an HTML5 build, it turned the game into pixel art:Screen Shot 2021-10-10 at 4.31.45 PM.png There's also an issue where a video at the end of the game causes it to break. I'll tag you in a comment if I find a fix before the end, though! For the future, definitely going to try to keep these limitations in mind and make sure everything will work in HTML5.

Carrying A Microwave Down 3rd Ave by Yoss III 2021-10-14T16:38:25Z

@freeworld: Thanks so much for confirming that the Mac build works!! Glad to hear you were able to play it!

TumbleArchery by DragonSheep 2021-10-07T03:32:11Z

Interesting idea, but the difficulty of figuring out the arrow shooting mechanic made it kinda hard to figure out what was going on. Programmer art can be fun, but I might've added a little more color or even tried simplifying the Jeremy sprite so that it fit better with the minimalist look. I did find the music weirdly catchy, though, and will have that little riff in my head for a while!

Tip-See-Saw by MickyHC 2021-10-06T01:16:49Z

Nice work! I like the central seesaw mechanic. My biggest piece of feedback is that there isn't really much to do in the "endgame"--once you survive the initial part, it actually gets easier because of all the boxes (at least until too many boxes pile up on one side and you're auto-dead). A fun idea, though, and the music was fun too!

Tick Away by jackiex9527 2021-10-07T02:54:43Z

I accidentally clicked on the credits first and was like, wow, this is a short game, lol. In the itch.io browser, the game didn't quite fit into the window for me, even at full screen. Otherwise, though, an interesting idea. I like the bomb carrying part in particular and could definitely see that being slotted in as a little mini-game in a larger narrative-driven game. Nice atmosphere!

LD54 — Limited Space

Droplet Dungeon by aucguy 2023-10-17T04:20:18Z

some interesting ideas! It might be a good idea if the sound for defeating little fires was different from the sound when little fires collide with the player.

Kofferpacker by Satyre 2023-10-08T22:18:08Z

cool game and nice style! the floatiness of the controls was a little difficult

Spellfire by quadtree 2023-10-17T04:42:16Z

very cool spin on the "suitcase filling" concept! might be nice if the defensive spells showed up even when not possible (it took me a while to figure out that Shield cost 3 SP)

EDIT: Oh, also I really enjoyed seeing what happened when you choose not to cast anything in a turn

Chargez by bentglasstube 2023-10-16T05:15:10Z

are you supposed to die when you go outside the ring or just lose a heart? In the web version, my game always froze then.

Overall, though, a very cool and well made game!

Too Much Car by pkenney 2023-10-17T04:13:32Z

while the controls are a little unusual, I think they work great! As you already mention on the itch page, a scoring system or even just a timer on each level feels like the logical next step

IBrexout by radmars 2023-10-15T05:13:31Z

great game with a great aesthetic and exactly the right size for a jam! As @lereveur already mentioned, keeping the score on the final screen might be a good idea

Shoot'n Trade by PatBGames 2023-10-17T04:30:36Z

cool combination of game ideas! It gets kind of dull if your only cannon is destroyed, though -- might be cool if there was some sort of weaker default attack that you always have

Farmageddon by IllaBom 2023-10-17T03:57:20Z

nice graphics! the carrot projectiles move a little too fast, and limiting the number of projectiles seems unnecessary

High Leaf Celestial by dxk2294 2023-10-08T21:15:12Z

really impressive scale for a jam game and solid mechanics! I'd maybe speed up enemy turns, particularly since so much of it happens offscreen

One Step Further by justking144 2023-10-08T20:30:11Z

interesting idea and graphics!

*SPOILER*

might have been cool if there was more interactivity to trick the player into thinking they can win

MUSEUM RUSH by Kilirane 2023-10-08T21:32:57Z

looks cool and neat interpretation of the theme! seems like a missed opportunity that the scream button doesn't actually make a sound, though

Deckit by Rewzu 2023-10-17T04:06:30Z

probably one of the best ones I've played so far and very well balanced for a jam game. I though at first that points were being calculated whenever the arm swept all the cars off, but it looks like it's actually more like king of the hill where the points are constantly calculated. As others have said, might be cool if that was clearer, but everything else was very intuitive

CARGOMBULATOR by ecmjohnson 2023-10-08T21:05:08Z

cool concept and looks nice! would be great if the tutorial didn't cover the whole screen and if the timer only started after pressing start

Ghosts by gamebuilder 2023-10-17T04:23:42Z

misread the instructions and was avoiding ghosts at first, but it made a lot more sense once I got the hang of it. nice use of sound for atmosphere!

KosmoPod by Hakro 2023-10-08T21:40:41Z

nice puzzles and interpretation of the theme!

The Vaculizer by ThorPalsson 2023-10-08T21:48:27Z

Cool concept! Might be cool if the area to grab things was a little wider

This Bed Ain't Big Enough For the Both of Us by Japayne 2023-10-17T04:49:27Z

really great implementation of the theme! Even though the dream bubbles are all horizontal, I wonder if arrows/WASD might make a more natural PC control scheme (although it seems like this is better geared for mobile anyway).

Mecha Walker by Le Don 2023-10-15T05:04:41Z

cool concept and very well put together for a jam game! for me, it felt like the random encounters were weighted a little bit too much toward negative outcomes, although it's possible I just had the wrong stats.

Grandma's Garden by MiniBetrayal 2023-10-17T04:58:55Z

really interesting mash-up of tower defense/Pipe Dream. as others have mentioned, the start is a little slow, but it does build to an interesting variety.

Unlimited MACE by Yoss III 2023-10-12T16:19:02Z

thanks all for the comments so far!

@taeghen @vivid-hallucination @ayxs @rubydaprincess @1257th-or-nothing @hakro : seems like the controls are a common theme! Yeah, the current controls are a mix of not having enough time / testing so much over such a short period of time that something weird started to seem normal. a more polished version of this would probably have different vehicles to account for different people's preferences. A couple elements are intentionally a mess, but a lot of that is unintentional, as a compromise to finish on time.

@paulsams @a1stakesauce : yeah, a combo meter and better health balancing were on the list but cut for time. The goal was originally to have like a billion projectiles that were impossible to fully avoid but lots of ways to restore health. my imperfect solution for the jam was to make it so that you can't restore that much health and it's more about rationing how slowly you lose it.

@jacobingalls : The deep lore is that riding a bicycle makes me hate cars, and so this game asks "what if someone on a bicycle REALLY REALLY hated cars?"

Unlimited MACE by Yoss III 2023-10-16T04:57:54Z

thanks for playing, @someone and @deadjolly ! the sound effects are all musical (tom drum for hitting car, horn for level up, etc.), but it sounds like either they get buried in the mix or there's an issue with sound in the web build

Space Knight by darzu 2023-10-17T03:51:09Z

cool concept with interesting movement!

The game because we couldn't manage to find a title by Rezioz 2023-10-08T20:58:19Z

cool kind-of Atari style aesthetic! I like the idea of there being no health but they mess you up with their attacks

Dino Dash - Race from extinction! Well... Maybe just your friends... by PKB Games 2023-10-15T06:15:10Z

interesting little demo. If the issue is just the size, you could try messing around with a Camera Node (although zooming too far might cause issues on a low-resolution image). Not an expert at Godot by any means, but the general recommended organization is usually to try to keep scenes as self-contained as possible--if you haven't already, look up the concept of "call down, signal up." So, for example, maybe you have one big Scene where the board, the pieces, the dice, etc. are all children of a root parent node with a script attached to it. When a red piece finishes moving, it sends a Signal up to root node of the Scene, which lets that root node know to call down to the green piece and says it can move now. It gets more complicated than that, and you definitely don't have to follow the general recommendations exactly, but that's probably where I'd start.

Rodent Rolling Rampage by Kilominior 2023-10-08T22:05:23Z

cool game with great aesthetic! didn't entirely understand what the physics were doing

River City Transit by vivid-hallucination 2023-10-08T20:50:21Z

nice idea and fun version of the theme! for me, even the download version was running choppy when the bus got full. But otherwise very cool!
