It was a little sad after my first round when I clicked the very first time on "End Turn" and got directly the "You Lost" message. And than I tried to beat the game several times, but did not read that I had to restart it :) Oh well, I am looking forward to your post Jam game, I see potential here and wish you all the best! Highest score from me to you, was "Mood" :)

falcondance 2021-10-04 22:01

I really like the little house designs you made!

jammygunns 2021-10-04 23:10

@bloham - Sorry about the bug. It was one of the two I just couldn't get fixed before the deadline (the other being after a win). Still working on trying to fix it between playing.

@falcondance - Cheers! I was surprised myself with how they came out.

The art style is beautiful, I love the concept of trying to get a more board gamey feel out of a computer game. It really succeeds in this with the wat you move over the board.

electricicebird 2021-10-05 05:03

The game is good but the ui is bit iffy it somewhat fun and I enjoy board games.

thegamerasd 2021-10-05 07:44

Great game, I like the style.

human-writes-code 2021-10-05 08:31

Interesting concept and I like that you interpreted the theme as "civil instability". The game idea was quite unique but I did find that I struggled to come up with a winning strategy. Some chill background music (or maybe not-so-chill seeing as it's about riots) would have been good. Overall, great job!

substain 2021-10-05 10:12

cool idea with a lot potential. Some indicators for where to put the units would have been nice

jammygunns 2021-10-05 21:23

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. It's helping heaps with where I can further improve on this project.

@substain - Indicators on the board would be a good idea. I'll be adding that to the like of post-jam updates.

@human-writes-code - Looking at the game again I need to adjust the rules page. I didn't explain parts of it which are important to know where to prioritise. The game is certainly missing some background audio.

@electricicebird - I enjoy boardgames too, so I had quiet a bit of fun working out how to get the feel of one. I didn't spend as much time on the UI as I would have liked, it is one for me to revisit.

@elveverx @thegamerasd - Cheers! I'm glad you liked the art and style.

anark0b3n 2021-10-06 06:15

Great idea, and I love the artwork ^^ however, I had issues understanding what was happening between turns, I was never really sure what I was doing

kopetan-ulitko 2021-10-06 07:02

You have chosen an interesting concept! I hope you will finalize this project. The only request... Please add feedback for the player. For a long time I did not understand the relationship between my actions and the result from them. P.S. Maybe I'm just wrong because I'm a casual gamer...

sceef 2021-10-06 07:15

Great job!

osh-studio 2021-10-06 07:37

Hey cool little simulation game, can imagine it turning into something super dope if there was simulated riots with little people and everything. I found it hard to find the end turn button at first, maybe make it more obvious for the user. GG

lukein 2021-10-06 12:26

I won my two games, but don't ask me how, I have no idea. First I thought rioters would flee police. Nope. Doesn't seem like it. Then, I was wondering if it was some Go logic, tried to 'atari' them. Didn't seem to work either. Then I went read the rules on the main menu, then proceed to try some stuff again, then stopped applying any logic.

So, random it was, random it went, random I won. Yaaay. Just put military when government is under assault and everything will be fine.

Nice game tho. The feel of how riots go is quite there. Irrational and all. Love it.

juanrod707 2021-10-06 16:06

I'm gonna give it a second chance because I really like the concept. I think that the main issue is that I can't see the movement of each piece after the turn ends, I think it'll help understand the mechanic. Otherwise, its a very interesting game!

fupi 2021-10-06 20:08

Nice! I don't think I understand *exactly* what I'm doing, but it seemed to work. I just placed police on the tiles around the protesters, and, if I had any left, on the same tile. Not sure what government buildings the instructions were talking about, since I didn't see any that were different. Even though I didn't fully grasp the mechanics, I have to say the aesthetic of this is gorgeous - sound design, camera angle and all, it does a great job of feeling like a board game!

jammygunns 2021-10-06 22:29

@anark0b3n @kopetan-ulitko @juanrod707 @fupi - Yet again I did my usual mistake of not having the game explain itself properly. While it makes sense to me it's because I programmed it, to the player though it would seem nonsensical. I need to have the game show how it works. I did want to have the pieces more visibly move between turns, to show where they are going but, I spent too long fixing the script for moving them I decided to keep it for the post jam. Reading these comments though I see I should have added it and will need more than just the planned animation in the post jam version.

@osh-studio - After bug fixing and having better feedback for the player, one of the things I want to implement is an option to change board tiles, tokens and the score board. Having small animated tokens is a good idea, I'll definitely be adding that to the options.

@lukein - It did unintentionally turn into more of a game of reacting than strategy. I had wanted to have some strategy involved but two issues I've noticed in my code kind of stopped it. While the riots shouldn't move into a location where police are and should try to move away from them if they can, I messed up the order the actions take place and the riot/civilian stacking. Trying to fix either so far have caused more issues so I will need to revisit them in more detail.

Again a big thank you to everyone for the feedback so far. It is really helping me plan how I can improve and also fix this game.

yoss-iii 2021-10-07 03:54

Yeah, really like the board game presentation. The flat art style definitely gives kind of a dystopian police state vibe. I do want to echo other players' feedback that it's hard to tell what's going on sometimes, but it sounds like you're already aware of the biggest issues. Good luck!

ghatazorg 2021-10-07 13:23

A lot of potential, great management game!

hiroboto 2021-10-08 03:30

well done bro! I know exactly how hard it was to create such a game in LD with one day erased due to some reasons so it shocked me how great your submission is!

pashaloban 2021-10-08 06:35

I like board games, cool game

baconinvader 2021-10-10 14:17

Interesting idea, unfortunately it was hard for me to figure out (maybe I'm just stupid). I think some movement animations between turns or some additional sound effects could have made things easier to understand. I like the board game aesthetic a lot at least.

barelyevengames 2021-10-19 05:33

Awesome job! I ran into similar issues of not really understanding how to play but that’s pretty standard with games that aren’t just a point and shoot type deal. Real cute graphics for the little players!

splitpainter 2021-10-20 16:55

I read the instructions from the very beginning (I like to read, so I never skip instructions ), but even then, only after 3 full sessions that I finally got it. Very cool take on the theme and nice work on implementing a turn based game. This is what I like to find in LD, these hidden gems that are very original.
